This bitch deserves to rot in prison, but I think that the first degree murder charge is a bit of a reach on the part of the prosecutor. The prosecutor is going to have be able to prove intent to make a murder conviction stick and unless there were previous statements made by this bitch that she wanted the kid dead I think that intent will be hard to prove. What she did was without a doubt abusive in feeding a toddler chili powder, but I doubt that she thought it would kill the kid, she does not seem smart enough to even know that it could kill the kid. The prosecutor better include lesser offenses like manslaughter as acceptable verdicts. If the prosecutor goes all or nothing for first degree murder they may wind up losing. It is going to be very hard to prove intent and get anything more than a manslaughter conviction out of this judging from the information in article and video.

To judge this young woman, as many posters here have done, I think is unfair. Accidents do happen, and this might have been an accident out of ignorance.

The story is still a bit sketchy. I would have like to hear what the woman's response was to the charges. Unless I missed something, the story just seems a bit incomplete to me.

I don't consider chilli powder to be spicy hot, if we are talking about the actually spice that reads Chili Powder, on the label. There has to be more to this then someone sprinkling some powder on a tiny child's tongue. Unless she actually poured tablespoons of this powder down the little girls throat, I can't imagine how she died from it.

If I put more then 7-8 large drops of ghost pepper sauce on a meal, it does burn my tongue a lot. But when it hits my stomach, it can feel like your insides are burning through. But the worst I get is the runs, so I have to make some long visits in the bathroom. Chili powder would do nothing. I can see that kid getting sick, but kill her? This women must have suffocated this child by trying to hold her mouth closed, or asphyxiated her with large amounts of powder.

BP: A child's tolerance is much less than an adult's. There are many different kinds of chiles which can be made into powder. If she got the habanero, which is the hottest chile in N. America, that could kill an adult.

Chili powder is often confused with cayenne pepper.IMO I think that cayenne pepper powder may be what was used in this case.I could be wrong but chili powder is a combination of several spices like oregano,cumin,paprika,garlic,salt AND cayenne pepper.It is USUALLY a mild tasting spice.Though at age 2 parents and caregivers are most likely unaware of what a child may be allergic to.I never had children but when I have people over for dinner I DO ask about food allergies..but a 2 year old can't answer that.

When the autopsy is complete we will know how much of what powder was given to this little girl/angel.

Doesn't anyone remember last year when the 'big thing' to dare someone to do was swallow a mouthful of cinnamon powder and people were ending up in the ER because of it? Because when they choked on it trying to swallow they ended up inhaling the powder and it caused inflammation in their lungs, in some cases causing seizures - which is what the article says this 2 year old suffered? How much worse would a seizure from chili powder be in a 2 year old compared to a seizure in a adult (minimally of college age) from cinnamon powder? Think about it! I can not believe the number of cruel heartless people posting here. #1 the story does not say she force feed her chilli powder. for all we know the child could have ingested it on her own while this girl was cooking. Also the child abuse charge was probably a backup charge because they know they are unlikely to get a murder charge.

Chilli powder in my opinion would be more dangerous due to it being a powder than anything else. My grandchildren love hot stuff and the youngest one had to be watched closely because he would drink hot sauce and also would use a whole bottle to eat a hotdog the way most kids do ketcup. And hotwings well lets just say he likes them hotter than his daddy and grandpa do.

This girl may have done nothing wrong. Kids will get into things no matter how closely you watch them turn your back 1 minute and something like this can happen. Unless she said she forced her to eat the chilli powder in large amounts I would say she might be innocent of wrong doing and should certainly be considered innocent until they prove her guilty unless she confesses.

If this were an accident & the girl did nothing wrong...she wouldn't be in jail charged with child abuse & murder. The authorities have a lot more information than is listed in the article. If it were an accident she wouldn't be in jail!

I disagree Nigel lots of people have been charged and then later found not guilty when new evidence arises. She may very well be guilty of something but I highly doubt that she ment to seriously harm the child. I have heard of this kind of punishment for children and I had no idea that death was possible from chilli powder. Dying from inhalation issues or an alergic reaction yes but a 21 yr old probally would have never even thought of those.

Yeah I noticed that too. Seemed quite strange to me as well. had she been 1.5 months maybe. But she wasn't she was 1.5 years and now she is 2 so somewhere between 6 - 12 months and he considers that he had raised her and is now her father. He is looking for sympathy. This could have been an accident. Kids get into things all the time no matter how careful the parents are, sometimes they have tragic results and other times the parents catch it in time and learn to be ever more vigilant where their kids are concerned. Until we have police investigation results we should not be so fast to condemn the woman. As for the child abuse charge that could be prosecution covering their ass because they know there is no grounds for murder but that murder charges would get the case tried in the media and they had a better chance of getting that abuse conviction because of it.

Personally I want to hear the womans side of the story. Yes it is tragic that the child died. But it could have been because she did not watch her every second instead of it being a direct cause of her action. Unless she force fed it to the child she may not be guilty of anything. Also if the kid had a history of seizures she may not be guilty of anything.

I have to admit that I pictured her holding a spoon of chili powder in one hand, forcing the baby's mouth open with the other hand and pouring it in. I figured the baby inhaled the chili powder and choked to death. Not that I'm a doctor, that's just what I imagined. And I guess she could have thought she was treating some condition. I doubt they will be able to prove premeditated murder, however you're correct in stating that a lot of the story is missing.

Yes, at the age of 2 a lot of things can kill that as an adult would simply be uncomfortable, or only mildly dangerous.  Chili powder is a major irritant and can cause convulsions, causing a toddler to be unable to breath, especially given that a toddler's lungs are so small.  Ingesting Capsicum, the thing that makes Chili peppers hot, can lead to dangerously high blood pressure as well, which would kill a child that young.

Yeah, but a spoonful of wasabi, although extremely uncomfortable, wouldn't kill me. I wouldn't expect cumin or chili powder to usually be lethal even in a two year old. I have heard of this another time about 10 years ago there was a man who fed his 3 year old chili powder as a punishment for biting at pre-school.. In that case the toddler aspirated the powder and died.
