Federal investigators will look into a plane crash south of Paris, Texas on Saturday morning that killed three men from Utah.
The Texas Department of Public Safety told NBCDFW.com that the victims were the pilot 49-year-old Rob Thompson and passengers 50-year-old Michael Endo and 44-year-old Michael Dale Bradley. All three men were from the Salt Lake City area.
FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said the single engine turbo prop Piper PA-46 crashed shortly before 9:00 a.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).
The FAA radar lost contact with the plane 10-miles south of Paris. Lamar County Sheriff's Deputies found the wreckage a short time later.

The bodies of three people were found on board the aircraft, which had been completely destroyed by fire.
The deceased were taken to the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office.
According the FAA registry, the plane was registered to a company in Salt Lake City, Utah. The aircraft's owner is Celtic Bank, Incorporated.
Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are headed to the scene to determine what caused the crash.
Paris, Texas is about 105 miles or a two-hour drive northeast from Dallas.

Rats ! I was going to say that..
KIDS KIDS KIDS I am tired of hearing about kids--Do not take my guns---I have money and do not care a rats a--s about kids--I do not have any and could care less--I have my guns to love--God bless the Reck Necks of Florida
Ok, this dude is either extremely stupid or a fake profile made by a troll. Either way it's pretty funny.
It's from Florida, your first guess was right.
No, we just need to ban assault airplanes. No one said anything about taking away all of your airplanes. We just want some reasonable airplane controls. If it saves even 1 life it is worth it.
Nobody NEEDS to fly at 5,000, 10,000, and definitely not 15,000 feet in the air. Also, do we really need the ability to fly at 200 knots? If we passes laws requiring that planes not fly over about 8' in altitude and at 20 mph or less, it would save a lot of lives.
Oneslackr,
"No, we just need to ban assault airplanes."
Assault airplanes are for military use and have no place in the hands of civilians.
@ Mickey
That's true but civilians are already banned from having true assault airplanes. LOL
I bet most of these airplane grabbers don't know the difference between a military grade assault airplane & a civilian airplane that just looks like the military version.
Oneslackr,
"I bet most of these airplane grabbers don't know the difference between a military grade assault airplane & a civilian airplane that just looks like the military version."
True... True...
then they will come out and say........wait for it......if it has a prop, then its a military assault airplane and therfore is banned from civilian use.
Your right, we need to ban all P-51,P-47 's and all ex military aircraft as those plains could remember all the people they killed in WWII and start killing all over again. We need to ban Cammy's too. People could start to think they are the military and start killing innocent people.
To OneSlacker and everybody above, Thank You for the light hearted jab at life today, I know I am 24 hrs off from your posts but if you come back and review this, just know that your posting here was appreciated and enjoyed.
Thanks, Harley Mike. That's exactly what it was intended to be, a light hearted jab at life today. You put it very well, I think.
It was just a Texan testing out his new heat seaking, shoulder fired rocket the NRA and manufacturers are selling now.
ID10T
That ID-10-T form you can get from the government to get a refund on your taxes.
airplanes don't kill people...people kill people...cars don't make people drive drunk...pencils don't mis-spell(?) words...
OK Ban assault weapons.
Once is ignorance (starbuck49). Twice is stupidity (you)
So you fell for it the first time? How does it feel to be ignorant?
ban japanese leftist who like to post"ban assault weapons" like takenada
to my understanding this aircraft is considered an extreamly reliable aircraft...
It is. Turboprops in general are far more reliable than piston engines. The weakest link is usually the humans behind the yoke, whether it be because they didn't carry enough fuel, flew into weather, or in come cases had a medical event.
There are several sayings from flying I like - "The 3 most useless things in flying are the gas left in the truck, the altitude above, and the runway behind." The other is "It's always better to be on the ground flying, than flying wishing you were on the ground."
Or the twin engine, "if one quits, the other will take you straight to the crash site."
Sympathies to the families.
You're doing it wrong.
Wind, weather, engine malfunction, control surface, birds. It's to bad people live there life and die in airtravel. May the souls rest in peace.
I must also ask.. was this a repo...? says bank owned.. banks do not have the commonsense to take care of anything like they are supposed to.. the plane may have been registered to someone but was it reposessed...? And if it was registered to a company in UTAH .. Banks seem to have this ego issue that anything they lend money for.. they use the terminology that they "own it" .. Banks need a lesson in lending terminology .. they lend the money their costumer's own ... the borrower borrows the banks customer's money to buy their own products.. the bank never owns anything, just what they take away from people... then they don't take care of it. thus this may be the end result.. I think the bank is in trouble on this one.. Do I think much of bankers attitudes...no .. I work with some bankers on a regular basis .. they make some of the most ridiculous decisions everyday.. if it was their own personal money the decisions would be totally different. But it's not, it's the clients money and lately it has been the taxpayers money...
Excellent point. Banks always seem to have the upper hand when it comes to handling customers' hard earned cash. Bank executives flaunt, boast and brag about themselves as if they are all-mighty gods. If only people would be more thrifty and save their money under a mattress rather then put it in a bank.
You handle completely explains your problem.
Banks are run by people who act like they are the consience of the world, lecturing potential customers about how they should stick all their candy in the bank, etc. I was turned down for a car loan by a bank VP one time, 5 decades ago, with a stern lecture about financial responsibility, saving (in his bank, of course), and living in a little lower "lifestyle", so I could put more money in the bank. A couple of years later, this same bank VP ended up doing 2-10 in the state prison for falsifying loan applications and keeping the candy for himself. He was turning down loans to customers, but turning in the loan applications, getting the money appropriated, then cashing the checks that were supposed to go to the customers. He was then intercepting the billing, so the customers would not get payment notices. He apparently screwed up and had some customers raise hell about getting "past due" notices for the loans he had refused to approve for them.
no big loss just bankers on board !!!
banks will not loan money unless the outcome is win win, for them, in other words no matter what happens they wll come out on top, in this case insurance will pay them. unless they were stupid enough to take the plane into the air with no coverage.
jerryb - Please, please, please tell me you visited him in the pokey in order to
gloatremind him about financial responsibility.Yes! Bankers definitely have an intelligence issue. And moral issues. And integrity issues. And honesty issues.
So do politicians, even more so, like Obama for instance.
It never ceases to amaze me how Americans chose to use and abuse their first amendment rights by showing their ignorance and their insensitive, callous nature. These men were someone's fathers, brothers, sons, and uncles. To make light of their misfortune is deplorable. Do you think their families are not reading these posts. The moderator should remove them as a courtesy to the families in my opinion.
As for the assault weapon jokes, I would not blame the family members for taking a simple household hammer to the skulls of these individuals who post like this. They are comments that incite rage from the family members and loved ones. I feel that I would have to give them a temporary insanity pass and a few months of psych evaluation should they decide to hunt these people down.
As for the crash, it is more a myth that light planes burst in to flames when they impact. They do on occasion. But more often than not, they just come apart. This plane was most likely on fire before it impacted. The inclement weather was surely a factor. This is probably why the FAA lost both verbal and transponder communication with the aircraft. These are the first things to go in a cockpit fire. Having personally been caught in similar situations, my thoughts and prayers go out to them. They were young men living the dream. May they rest in peace. I'll say a prayer for the insensitive callous ones as well in hopes that they learn how to behave in the future.
And yes, Pipers in general, are typically very good aircraft. But as machinery goes, the aircraft is only as good as the maintenance performed. I urge the families to have the FAA recover and inspect the flight and maintenance logs of this aircraft.
killerwhale,,, you just go on ahead and set these idiots straight,,,most of the posts do not even relate to the story..
"...simple household hammer to the skulls..." said killerwhale on his rant about unbalanced people all the while divining the cause of a crash without one detail.
killerwhale - It's wonderful to have an expert in all things such as yourself around to set everybody else straight. And nobody gives a $hit about whether you would approve of the family members committing mayhem upon anybody who makes a comment you don't agree with.
Too many unskilled pilots flying around
Piper PA46s are one of the safest single-engined aircraft in their livery.
However, the age is unknown...date of manufacture.
Maintenance records would offer anything as to the last time of maintenance/annual performed.
With the NTSB and FAA enroute to the scene, they will be able to deternine, somewhat the nature of the accident...be it mechanical or not.
It is highly unlikely there is a 'black box' in that aircraft, as it was privately owned and maintained.
Being the aircraft was a turbo, the fuel was not high octane fuel (100 low lead or 115/145 aviation gasoline), it would be a kerosene veritative...
The autopsies of the three people may well determine whether or not a medical emergency precipated the initial cause of the accident...unless the remains are too damaged...
So...those who posted nonsense/non-contributable gibberish are doing more harm than good...
Looks like it may have been poor weather at altitudes ice becomes a killer. The cold front yesterday was damp/dew point wet. They did have a tail boost may have caused false airspeed indicators to freeze up and over speed caused ice.
Any how It is sad to lose three souls. I pray for their families and bless their sadness to hope something good is as a result.
Likewise Lee-999986, no one gives 2 cents for you either. Well...with the exception of me. If you had been the one in the plane, my comment would have been the same.
First, go get a clue
Second, attempt a pilot license
Third, experience the change from common athiest to a God fearing Christian when you lose all instumentation and are headed back to mother earth in the dead of night. Yep! I even pray for the common people such as yourself.
BTW, for those less experienced, there were some significant pieces of data within not on this article but others from other sources on which to base an educated opinion. Put some hours in the left seat and maybe you might find that silence is golden and you should assume the position and learn something. But I've often found that liberals are incapable of such a task.
Cheers and good day.
Paris, Texas is the name of a movie.
joe,
So is Fargo (North Dakota). Does anyone else have any more movies they would like to add?
Judging from the type of airplane involved, I'm guessing it was some rich guy who was clueless as a pilot showing off his expensive toy to his rich friends and then - Oops!
Being rich and able to buy an expensive plane doesn't make you a competent pilot. Sad but true.
They aren't necessarily rich ...
UgaALLTheWAY,
You have to be fairly rich to afford a plane like that and generally speaking, rich guys think they're much better pilots than they usually are.
I've been in general aviation for over 50 years & I've seen it more times than I can count. Normally if they're rich, you can just go ahead and assume that they suck as pilots - only very rarely will you be surprised.
I don't know why they're like that, but they are.
Watch out folks --
Aside from the air-to-ground drone missle strike in an Indianapolis neighborhood, we may also see an increase in DEA drug interdictions via air-to-air drone missle strikes ... without due process, as per the recent trend ...
Sad, RIP.
Every keyboard pilot on here needs to shut up about things you have NO clue about. I am not rich. I am a common American living in Atlanta. I, however, am a private pilot. Every 2-3 weeks, I sit myself in a Piper (that is probably owned by a bank) and climb a few thousand feet in the air to enjoy a personal hobby. Now I also have the option to grab a different binder that has different keys. These keys happen to start a plane worth half a million dollars. This would only cost me $250/hr to fly. Now granted I don't have the justification for such an expenditure, doesn't mean the same for others.
Everyone who says flying is for rich people needs to SHUT UP! Everyone could do it if they wanted to. It is not cheap and puts a dent into one's finances, but it is not out of reach of most Americans. I would be PISSED if I had an accident and my family and friends had to read these comments about me.
ban the human race, the world would be better off.
Ditto what UgaAllTheWay said. I work in aviation and came on here to see if there were any comments from people knowing why the crash happened and all I see is stupid comments from people arguing the 2nd amendment which has NOTHING to do with this article in the first place.
Does anyone have any information why this aircraft crashed? I mean real information. Not stupid unrelated gun comments, rich comments or anything else that doesnt pertain to this article.
You won't find anything useful in the comments. You can ask all the legitimate questions you want - Were they enroute? Landing? Taking off? What do the airframe/engine/propeller logs say? Did they call a Mayday? A Panpan? Radio transcripts? - nobody will have those answers yet. The NTSB might, after a year or so, when the final report comes out.
Three men died and no-matter their status ( which we don't know and shouldn't matter ) it is still a major void in the people who love them. I can pretty much guarentee they were born in the same fashon as you and I. Their lives ended tragically in an accident. As for the cause.. 1) icing - could be this time of year even over Texas 2) mechanical issues .. I know a person who owned this same kind of plane and a mechanic started the Turbo engine in a wrong sequence and schorched the pistons... - could be mechanical you absolutly need the knowlege to work on these type of planes. 3) maintanence. first comes to mind "bank owned" if this is a repossessed plane the bank will not spend a dime to maintain it in any fashion, or cut every corner in the book to get it to look good. (first hand knowlege on that comment) 4) at this juncture of the flight they were just flying strait - not landing or doing any type manuvers... and yes pilot error could have cause mechanical problems.. example starting the plane in a wrong sequence...?? Anyway my hat rests on the "bank owned" portion of this article. That seems to be where most problems are caused..
Yep, three out of around 160,000 that died worldwide that day.
Also, to comment on your vast store of knowledge & hear-say "experiences" regarding aircraft - a turboprop engine doesn't have pistons.
Additionally, it is the responsibility of the pilot to determine if the aircraft is airworthy before flight. That would include determining that all required maintenance and inspections were up to date, and to plan the flight to avoid weather and flight conditions that he or she and/or the aircraft is not capable of, or certified for, operating in.
Might be better if you stuck to commenting on subjects that you actually know something about.
