Cops: 'Party atmosphere' after strangulations, dismemberment attempt

View more videos at: http://nbcchicago.com.

Four young adults are being held in lieu of $10 million bail in connection with the strangulation deaths of two men in Joliet, Ill., authorities said.

Adam M. Landerman, 19; Alisa R. Massaro, 18; Bethany L. McKee, 18; and Joshua F. Miner, 24, were charged about 4 p.m. Friday with six counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Eric Glover, 22, and Terrence O. Rankins, 22, according to a press release from Joliet Police.

Police discovered the bodies of Glover and Rankins on Thursday afternoon at 1121 North Hickory after receiving a tip. Landerman, Massaro and Miner were also found in the residence.

The three were playing video games when police arrived, according to a Herald-News report. Police told the Herald-News they had attempted to dismember the bodies before continuing the "party atmosphere."

McKee was taken into custody a short time later, the Joliet Police Department press release stated.

Further investigation led to all four being charged.

I'll comment. These four will get a trial and we will hope the evidence is strong and clear enough that any or all of the "young adults" suspects will never have the opportunity to walk out of prison.

How horrible that they would strangle these two men and then attempt to desecrate their bodies with dismemberment and and them to be gruesome enough to walk around the house with the decay of these men's bodies for almost a week.

Prayers to the families of these two men I do hope justice falls upon their attackers swiftly.

I voted for Warren's "no comment."

It's kind of a speechless moment. Kind of a WTH thing. Sort of goes along with the guy who killed his bests friend two weeks ago in New York, tried to cut his head off, couldn't manage to get it all the way off, wrapped the body in a blanket and stuffed it in a closet, and lived with it there for over a week before police found it.

He was also a young man.

Something is WRONG, people. And it is NOT guns on the streets. It's one thing to be callous enough to kill and it's quite another to try to dismember the bodies, give up because it's "too hard to do" and sit down and play video games in the same room.

I'm telling you, somebody better be putting the freaking food supply in this country under a damn microscope, and reading the report that's sitting on the FDA web site not allowed to be published because the chemical lobby is holding it up.

Why are Obama and Biden and the rest of the Libs trying SO HARD to ban semiautos and ban magazines. It does NOT having anything to do with anything. It won't stop crime. Whether you use a gun, knife, auto, bomb. You are not going to stop crime by banning semi-autos. Crime is Crime. That is my point!!! In Chicago 446 Children were killed by handguns and whatever they could use last year. All Obama and the Libs are talking about his banning Assault weapons. WHY!!! There are too many violent young people in today's society. And they don't think twice about taking someone's dad, mom, brother sister or love away in the blink of an eye! Some even laugh or joke about this atrocity with buddies.

WHY? Yes, there's violence everywhere, yet mostly in the media/TV/Video Games. And you could say that these kids/young adults have been raised on and around violence and that the animated and or characters have become their role models.

However, I am curious why does violence have value over life and creativity. Cannot the media create entertainment without direct violence as the main theme. Cannot the video game developers come up with a game as entertaining without the violence, drugs or sex involved.

There is no true creativity in bang bang shot or beat him/her--be the first to kill the character actions.

And where are the morals and values teaching these young adults that they can do better, and rise above the violence to be a better person?

Just curious?

Hey flexmind, if the NRA and the other wimps that worship metal manhood weren't so paranoid there wouldn't be near as many ANY guns. But as long as the 'cons' are afraid of everything on the planet there will be more and more metal manhood. And the 'libs' will continue to try to drag the 'cons' into the 20th century. That would at least be a start to reality and normalcy, two things 'cons' are terrified of.

This kind of savage butchery is not a new phenomenon. Murders like this can be found in American news archives from the 1940s, 20s, 1890s, all the way back to the printing of crime stories. What's different is how much easier it is to read/hear about it thanks to electronic mass media. It just SEEMS to be more frequent.

How about this. If you will notice, these are by mistake, several times this many die by other treatments, allergies, infections, what not, that occur while under medical treatment.

medical mistakes now kill around 200,000 Americans every year. That would make them one of the leading causes of death in the United States

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/01/opinion/more-treatment-more-mistakes.html

Some where around ten times as many guns. So hey, why don't we outlaw the guns. Makes perfect sense, right? The more of us that use hospitals, the more die, another side-effect from obamacare.

To all of you lamenting about "kids these days": the US murder rate has declined substantially since a peak in the late 80's/early 90's - e.g. a whopping 40% drop between 1991 and 2011. So, thanks, but we're doing just fine (even with our video games) compared to the generation before us.

When will people learn that their subjective experience of the world through news and other media is not a reliable source of data?

Lizzie Borden took an ax

Gave her mother forty whacks

When she saw what she had done

Gave her father forty-one

Hate to say, but savagery and sociopathology existed long before videogames and violent movies. I doubt that exposing kids to unrelenting violence improves them, but it doesn't cause this. I think that the deep anger and division in our country can tip people who are mentally unstable over the edge, and maybe video games can get to them, too. But these kids aren't insane, they're just completely contemptuous of life. I'm willing to bet that they all were heavy drug users. I think that a lot of heavy drug use can alter brain chemistry and screw you up. These kids undoubtedly egged each other on, and they may have even told themselves that the other kid made them do it, but the reality is that they're just missing that empathy gene. They don't care about anyone or anything. Life is just a weird thrill ride without consequences.

They're going to find out different.

Those people on this vine bad mouthing "libs" and other clear thinking people about gun control should take a few minutes to ask themselves if they had a child or friend killed at Sandy Hook how would they feel about reasonable gun control then. There are many ways for our society to slow and control violence; selling automatic weapons isn't one of them........... BTW I'm a life long responsible gun owner and millions of other gun owners agree with me on this issue.

Anti Obama and other mean spirited right wing comments are usually prompted by ignorance and racism......... Of course those making hateful remarks will deny this because their blind to the fact that they have become fearful and angry people trying to make sense of an fast changing world.

The idiot libs are pissed that a semi-auto rifle wasn't used so they could use it as ammo to try cramming their dumb a$$ agenda down our throats!. The libs need to get a clue and realize that homicide is going to occure no matter what they do. Based on that FACT is one of the reasons I got the weapons I got. Unfortuantly it may take a homicidal madman to use sarin gas on a school as a means to kill high numbers to wake up the libs to reality, and unfortuantly it will inevitably happen.

4 people at $50k a year, that's $200k a year. Say they get 25 years.

That's $5 million.

Now let's add the taxpayer funded legal representation and appeals. I'll guess $2 million.

So we're at $7 million and counting.

BigAl Las Vegas ; "...and other clear thinking people about gun control should take a few minutes to ask themselves if they had a child or friend killed at Sandy Hook how would they feel about reasonable gun control then."

There's the oxymoron here, BigAl. Connecticut has all those "reasonable gun controls" and more that you "clear thinking people" want. It didn't prevent this tragedy. Because you JUST DON'T GET IT. Criminals don't obey posted signs and words written on a piece of paper.

You don't even use the examples of the areas in this country that have even stricter gun laws than CT, and the highest crime rates to go with them. Go ahead, bring your "common sense" discussion on out here to the table. We've been waiting for it, but all we see is what you want to do to the law abiding folks....you know, the ones that you all call names for excercising their LEGAL 2nd amendment right.

#1.36 - Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:23 AM EST

Oh, and BTW, BigAl, automatic weapons are already banned unless you have a very difficult to obtain Class III license. Educate yourself before making blanket statements about including other gun owners thoughts into your own.

Automatic weapons weren't used an any of these horrible crimes.

  • 5 votes
#1.37 - Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:47 AM EST

It doesn't matter the weapon... killers and potential killers will use whatever is available. A good family friend was beaten to death with a hammer. A neighbor was stabbed once in the heart with a screwdriver. There are more. I've grieved too many times for friends who were victims of murder by means other than guns. These were all reasonably "nice" neighborhoods, some of the crimes committed by allegedly sane people. One thing they had in common? Anger issues. Coupled with alcohol and drug use, it is a lethal mixture.

I think we need to read more ancient history. We will find out beheadings, disembowelment, dismemberment, etc. were all too common "way back when." People simply didn't hear about it so much.

NavyQMCS, #2.13: I have no idea why they've been charged with 6 counts of murder, per what I've read so far. I noticed that also. It isn't just here but other articles I've seen. Not sure if it's supposed to be 6 different charges, given that there were other crimes committed, or what.

The most information I've been able to find so far is that they aren't saying which ones in the group of four actually strangled these young men. Planning and participating in robbery is one of the things I've seen so far, which may or may not be the motive. Unfortunately the media throws these things out half-baked, rather like the article here. I guess there will be more later... or not. It's a mad world.

Hi: Tommyboy, Navyvet, Doug, michigan, WTF,

I think that it's kind of funny that the very people that started yelping about "Obama land"
(not much of a "dog whistle" there. We all heard and understood that one)
are now claiming that Civil rights activists will make a "race thing" out ofd this.

Um guys, YOU have already made a "race thing" out of this, but somehow you got the story backwards!
    I may be wrong but,
I seriously doubt that these kids come from "President-Obama-loving-Democratic-house-holds".

This is a horrible story, but after making total "RACITS" fools out of your selves, (sorry guys, but the shoe fits!)
you are complaining about something that is not going to happen.
The suspects have been arrested. So, why would civil rights activists need to protest to have them arrested?
You do know that that was what the protests were about don't you? If not that, then what?

Let me guess, you get your news from Fox!
    Pretty sad, but pretty funny!

Disgusting, and it's becoming a trend and instead of grappling over some of the bull crap everyone deems so damn important, then it better get fixed or were in for a horrible crime wave. Hold them accountable! To "continue with the party atmosphere" is something I can't even wrap my mind around. Not responsible and no consequences for their actions is why many are doing what they are doing. Guess what folks, time out isn't working. Counting to 3 or 5 isn't working. Come up with something else. Nobody wanted to "harm the poor children by spanking them". Now they are harming everyone else. Worked with a girl who absolutely would not raise her voice to her son or spank him. Stood there and smiled why he kicked me. He was 6. I told her she was messed up and left. Now guess who is having problems with their son..................

Let me see Obama had the extension for unemployment increased. has given away free phones and food stamps so they can sell them. yep your right he has nothing to do with this problem. From what he has shown since being reelected he is not responsible for much of nothing but vacationing

No reason to collapse this community. Truth hurts for the fool you voted for...

    Thanks Rocky.

Rocky's lying at the worst and parroting Rush or Fox at the best. I know you guys blame everything on Obama. Carry on, just don't blame your own low IQ and lack of education on him, that's your fault.

I managed to raise four kids without spanking them. They all got educated. They all have jobs. They aren't out in the world doing people harm. I doubt if any one of them has ever lifted a hand in anger, to anyone.

There is a difference between not spanking and not disciplining. Every kid needs to know that there are negative consequences for bad behavior. The trick is to figure out each kid and tailor those consequences to fit his/her definition of negative. The other trick is to follow through. I have seen so many parents threaten to do something to correct their children's behavior and then never do it. Get up off your butt and make them pay a price for their bad behavior. Don't just sit there yelling at them.

I took the kids swimming once. They had been really looking forward to swimming. I told them they had to behave themselves while we were there. When they began misbehaving and did not listen when I told them to stop, I pulled them out of the water, put them in the car and took them home and made them clean their rooms. The next time I took them swimming, they behaved perfectly. Works every time. It just takes the willingness to mean what you say.

One of the things I have seen while working in the schools is that some of these kids are second and third generations of drug addiction. I'm not talking about weed or something innocuous. I'm talking about meth, cocaine, pcp, and the like. The various chemically designed poison drugs that screw people up completely. When your mother and your grandmother were using stuff like this, what does it do to your brain? What kind of weird synapses are formed or fail to form? Then, on top of that, you have the fact that mom is a fu**ed up meth head. It's doubtful you get much of any parenting, much less good or bad parenting.

I really believe that addicts should be sterilized, at least while they are addicts. I suppose it could be reversible if they ever managed to straighten their lives out. And any children they do have should be removed from their custody at birth, placed in good homes and given a fighting chance.

Thank you, underemployed, for telling it like it is...with experience to back you up. I am a teacher who has never seen anything like the misbehaving, entitled, arrogant and truly disrespectful to everyone students that I have had for well over the last 8 years. I make a point of calling each parent of such students, but all I get is "I'll talk to him/her and it won't happen again." Yeah, right. The next day's behavior is even worse, with a sneer and increased anger in the class. Parents are the people least respected by their kids. WHY? These emotionally and morally vacant killers will never know what it is to be a positive member of society. Very sad that this is where we are as a nation.

I've seen the exact same thing, Geo. I think of the way I was raised (which I don't think was bad, but could've put my parents in jail by todays standards) how I was held accountable for my actions, taught to respect others, what it takes to build a good reputation and how quickly it can be lost by doing something foolish. I got my "spankings", my groundings, my loss of priviledges....surprisingly I don't feel like society owes me a dang thing other than my freedoms that all law abiding citizens deserve.

I see small kids today in my own family tree talking to parents like they were the children, but we have to let them act like this so they can "grow and find themselves, etc." B S! You teach kids that they can be disrepectful and say or do nearly anything they want, thats how their going to live their lives, and the rest of us get to deal with it.

What is a "young adult"? Isn't that kinda like being a little pregnant?

Wish NBC would stop using the term "cops" over and over... How about "The C word".... or just plain having their people type either police or law enforcement officials or whatever they may be.

Because I won't be sure what you're talking about (there's already a "C" word). How about we just drop the "new speak" and use the old words that you put in my mind when you use the new term.

Really? Are you trying to imply that all black people are criminals & all white people are as pure as the driven snow? Just come out of the closet & admit you're a racist.

This is a bit off topic but don't you know by now that no one in this country is allowed to protect themselves if they're about to get victimized. It's not the PC/civil thing to do & it's against the law!

The only thing you're allowed to do if you find yourself in a bad situation is to dial 911, if you have the time or chance to do so (because the police will protect you, LOL). Other than calling 911 you're supposed to curl up in a little ball & whimper like a pansy while you wait for your turn to die. If you're lucky the police will get there in time to write up a report & to take pictures of your corpse. LOL

I guarantee this will bring Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan, the CBC, MSNBC, and all the rest of the racist poverty pimps out in force to protest. When the black on black homicides are taking place as we speak you don't here a word from them. Chicago is Obama's home town. BTW.Earlier this month Chicago recorded its 500th homicide. No charge for that.

What those white kids did is wrong & deserve to be put away for life but lot's don't use the race card because it goes both ways too.

          Let's see...

          Blame Obama... CHECK

Call Reagan's free phone plan "Obama Phones"... CHECK

Excuse gratuitous white-on-black violence as "self defense"... CHECK

Discuss bad white kids as an isolated incidence of bad parenting but generalize all blacks as thugs... CHECK

Standard invocation of social justice leaders Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton as opportunistic race traders... CHECK

Random inclusion of anti-gun control rhetoric in a story that doesn't involve guns... CHECK

Backhanded slam at the obese white women while slamming black men who date them... CHECK

False concern for Chicago crime rate shown by questioning why blacks can't fix the problems themselves while simultaneously ignoring the fact the story is about white criminality which also doesn't seem to be getting much better by comparison, i.e misdirecting the focus onto the victims... CHECK

Invocation by wingbats of Obama as "Savior"... CHECK

Looks like what we got here on this thread is a standard case of knee-jerk American wingnut racism played by the numbers. MMM mmm mmm, how I love the smell of that pure, straight-from-the-tap American white racial fury unleashed. Smells like the ink on the Declaration of Indepence. If only we could bottle it; I could make a mint selling it at NASCAR and Tea Party rallies, Walmarts and Chic-Fil-A's in the South and Ted Nugent concerts/Gun Shows.

          Sorry StevePhoenix,

Your friends Dee, and John and well, YOU have already made this into a race thing. The article doesn't!
If the article had said "Four young white adults murder and try to dismember two young black adults,
after which they have a party in the room with decomposing bodies."

You guys would have been all over this. So MSNBC or who ever wrote this article did it your way.
          THEY NEVER MENTIONED RACE!
          Drum roll please,

          YOU DID!

Get back to us after you wipe the egg off of your faces. Sheesh!

          Bye the way,
The suspects have been arrested. So, why would civil rights activists need to protest to have them arrested?
You do know that that was what the protests were about in the Travon Martin case, don't you?
That's why there were no protests after the "loud music at a gas station shooting" ...
Un like George Zimmerman who was released, The police arrested the guy who did it,
          like they were supposed to.
No arrest = protest, Arrest and standard procedure = no protest. Got it?

Let me guess, you get your news from Fox!
          Pretty sad, but pretty funny!

Yes, because Pot heads are strung out. Such a tool. As a matter of fact I don't smoke pot. If these kids had been high on weed they may just not have given any of the black kids cheesy poofs in stead of trying to take their heads off.

Where the F are the parents? Maybe the Schools should teach them some F'n Morals...

Like Chris Rock said "What ever happend to Crazy?"

Drugs could be the cause. White trash seem to like Meth. I would believe that. But not weed. Come on.

Ha! No sir, I am not. I was pretty much the racist for jumping to conclusion for wanting to Ban "Black Hands" because it looked like they had a few black kids in custody. My bad, there's bad in every color.

And since the freaks at fault for this are white, the trash seem to follow Meth for some reason. In reality there probably isn't any drugs or alcohol involved.

How about just facing the fact that some people are wired wrong from birth & are just plain evil & have no empathy for others. Get someone like that who is an assertive/leader type & it isn't difficult for them to find a couple of lackey follower type friends to go along with their sick, evil, twisted ideas/plans.

There have been plenty of killers throughout history who have never played video games, used drugs, listened to gangster rap or heavy metal music & were never abused/beaten/belittled by their parents.

Why do people always have to try & blame it on something/someone else. Some people are just f**ked up, just accept it.

ok, first..the police said they went back to the party, young adults sitting around drinking kool aid and chips when one of them was arrested before with possession of a gun and weed.

second, what are the chances 4 people wired wrong hanging out together at the same time? very odd i think.

third, everyone wants to blame guns when guns are used, so why is silly to blame drugs and violent games.

a little something else...about a year ago, a boy in maryland locked himself in his room and played a modern warfare marathon when it was first released, for 3 days and nights he drank energy drinks and no sleep, ended up in the ER. the games are addictive and some kids dont or cant draw the line.

Yes, because the Manson Family only had one person wired wrong in their fleet. And people with the same thoughts and morals never hang together. Its always opposite people hanging out. Like "One" said,

                just crazy, sick, basterds.

Thank God there wasn't any guns involved or Holly Christ, Illinois would have to ban them some more. This crime is much more horrific because there aren't any guns. These sick F's did it with their bare hands!

                @Against

It is just as ridiculous to blame guns. Guns don't cause people to do things. Guns are inanimate objects.

Yes, could someone be strung out on powerful drugs which would cause them to do something crazy because they aren't thinking clearly. Sure it happens but it certainly wouldn't be caused by something like pot. Like I said there are plenty of killers who have never used any drugs.

I don't buy the idea about video games, music, & movies being the cause. People all over the world play the same games, listen to the same music, & watch the same movies yet they don't have the high rate of murders we have in the U.S. Besides, why did these types of crimes happen hundreds & thousands of years ago long before video games or gangster rap or violent movies etc?

If someone was truly influenced by a video game/music/movie etc...to do something crazy/evil then that means they are wired wrong & have mental problems.

Our society no longer teaches values/morals/ethics either. That is part of the problem for some who do bad things.

However, there are simply people who are not wired right (i.e. mental issues). There have always been people like that since humans first appeared on this planet & there always will be.

Blame needs to be put where it belongs & that is on the shoulders of the people who do these type of things. People need to quite blaming everything under the sun as the cause.

People have free will to make choices in life including choices to commit crime & to do evil things. It is easy for some of them to try & place blame or to deflect attention away from themselves, when they get caught, by saying the music/drugs/guns/movies/video games made them do it.

As for the kid playing a game for 3 days, that is called bad or no parenting.

BTW, if you haven't then you need to watch some programs on couples/groups that kill. It is very interesting. There are people who by themselves have never committed a crime yet when they get together with other people who share similar twisted thoughts/ideas they all of a sudden start to commit crimes together. Usually each crime these couples/groups commit becomes progressively more violent/heinous than the last.

If these people would have never met the odds were that they never would have committed the crimes at all. Part of the group crime issue is the whole pack mentality that happens, just like during riots. People who on their own would feel inhibited to commit a crime loose that inhibition in the anonymity of a group (not saying that is the case in this story).
