Updated at 7:09 p.m. ET: LOS ANGELES -- Three men and two women were in custody Monday in connection with a hostage takeover at Nordstrom Rack in the Westchester area of the Southern California city last week, police said.

Troy Marsay Hammock, 29; Everett Oneal Allen, 24; and Raymond Sherman, Jr., 34, were arrested on suspicion of robbery. Rochelle Monique Sherman, 33, and Paula Roneshia Bradley, 29, were arrested on suspicion of accessory after the fact.

"There is some criminality as far as these individuals are concerned. They have records," Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said.

Four of the suspects are currently in custody in LA. Sherman is being held in Phoenix without bail. All five suspects are residents of Los Angeles, according to police.

On Jan. 10 at about 11 p.m. local time, the three male suspects allegedly barged into the clothing store at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center and took 13 women and one man hostage. At least one person was stabbed in the neck and another was sexually assaulted, according to police.

None of the men have been connected to the sexual assault, Beck said.

"We can't classify them in that category yet ," Beck said.

A hostage was able to call a relative, who then alerted police. A four-hour police standoff ensued.

When officers finally took the store, the suspects were gone.

"It was later learned that they left the location in a white sport utility vehicle as patrol units were arriving," police wrote in a statement.

By Saturday night, detectives had arrested the alleged robbers, and "two additional persons were arrested for their actions after the robbery," according to police.

The Nordstrom Rack reopened at 10 a.m. local time Monday.

"We're offering counselors on site today at the store and they will remain available as long as our employees need them," said Tara Darrow, Nordstrom's director of public relations.

My uncle was a police detective and always believed that a person with a right to carry who had passed the requirements to get the permit was the best deterrent against crime. He said that the criminals knew exactly where the police were prior to the crime, but the police only find out about it after it happens. He stated that the police were there to see that justice happened afterward, but they couldn't be expected to provide any defense of the crime itself.

Yes, we know you are trying to make guns the hot topic of this crime even though no shots were fired. What most of us are wondering is how the criminals managed to get out of the building when law enforcement had it surrounded and they were on the second floor.

We'd also like them to stop dragging out the description of the criminals.

screminmimi, I can give you a description. Black males, between the ages of 18-30 with criminal records. It's always a black guy that commits crimes on the news.

screminmimi: What most of us are wondering is how the criminals managed to get out of the building when law enforcement had it surrounded and they were on the second floor.

From what I gathered from the above article, the gunmen apparently took control sometime after the store closed at 10 p.m. (local time) or there abouts. The call to the police came in about an hour later (11 p.m.) giving them plenty of time to do quite a bit... including the assaults and their escape. I'm guessing the police response at 2 a.m. was local time since an instantaneous response at the time of the call would have been physically impossible.

As to how the gunmen got away... they apparently had 3 hours to figure it out. The real question is, why did they have three hours.

This reminds me of the home invasion that took place last year in which a family of four (mom, dad and their two daughters) were killed. The police department was notified, and yet even after they showed up to the house to investigate, they sat outside forever while the mother and one daughter were actually raped and killed, the house was ransacked, the father and the other daughter were killed and the house was sat on fire. The criminals walked out of the house and apparently were surprised the police were out there wiating for them.

Good thing that out of 13 hostages, no one had a concealed weapon, otherwise they might have had to take out the perps. Certainly don't want anyone doing anything like self-defence in California - we want everyone to just zombie along, wait for the nice gubmint to think and do for you.

Don't say that! That's too much logic. Don't you know that one person with a weapon stops any crime from happening 100% of the time?! Had one person had a gun in Aurora 0 people would have been shot, not 58. Every citizen in the US should have a gun. Zero crime would ever happen again! Shame on Nordstrom for not issuing firearms to their employees. I hold them personally responsible for this situation.

It's obvious we need MORE shootouts. If every one of those hostages had been armed as God intended, then for sure those perps would be dead, everybody rescued and all returned to peace and tranquility. These stinking liberals will not be happy until all our weapons have been confiscated and America has been taken over by a United Nations led One World Sharia Law Socialist Fascist Communist Government.

Bluelake, does your family give each other guns for Christmas? Get some help.Speaking -as a liberal- I do not want to see all guns confiscated. Assault rifles are for the military and police and only they should have them. They are rapid repeaters for killing and nothing but- and need not be in the average citizens collection. Your UN comment and the socialist blah blah blah is utterly ridiculous. I suppose you salute, what, a corporation that sees you as nothing but a customer? Our government is half crippled by congressmen who are in hock to big money. Democrats won. We like education, we like the EPA, we believe in SCIENCE, etc. Democrats are great people. This is of far more interest for you- It is the corporations who allign them selves with the evangelicals because the evangelicals are told who to vote for by their pastors. Pastors like money. It is the great tragic comedy of modern day. Churchgoers get their rewards in heaven, CEO's get their rewards on earth. Works great, for the CEO's. It's a little generalized, but you get the idea.

Off spot sarcasm to be sure, but you'are entitled to your view... and no, having someone in the crowd with a firearm does not mean all will be well 100% of the time. But it can sure put a damper on the plans of those intent on doing harm to others. It may even stop them.

Over the past weeks since the school shooting in Connecticut, we've seen plenty of articles calling for the removal of guns, decrying statistical and historical evidence to the contrary, while pointing to such events and the many shootings that have occurred since by criminals and crazies.

Little attention at all was paid to the recent incident in which a gunman shot his wife and then chased fleeing witnesses into a movie theater. Before getting off another shot, he was dropped by an armed patron who just came to watch the movie. That same week, a 12 year old girl in Oklahoma defended herself during a home burglarly. But we don't hear much about these incidents.

I understand the pain everyone feels about the loss of life in Connecticut and the gang violence in our cities. But disarming the nation is not the answer. Better parenting, better education, better morals, and even better methods of taking care of those mentally incapable of taking care of themselves would prove immensely better courses of action, but these require time and effort too few are willing to provide, including our own elected officials.

Let us not forget that the policeman on the street is only a deterrent, and only when visible, and that people don't always steal, rob, murder, and rape because they are crazy. Most of the time they do it because they want to. There truly are evil people in the world intent on doing evil things. And no police force in the world is going to stop them 100% of the time.

The only thing that happens 100% of the time is that every crime will have a victim, and every victim will get one chance not to become a statistic. Unfortuately, they are usually never prepared or equipped to do so 100% of the time.

Yeah, me neither, but we were supposed to have all this money freed up from defense spending and do all sorts of wonderful things with it. Last I heard there was more money in the 'fiscal cliff' bill for stuff that the Pentagon doesn't even want. Sigh.

Only difference, hands actually have a purpose other than killing. These comparisons are so stupid and flawed. "But you have to ban knives or bats or cars or blah blah blah". Guns were invented for one purpose. To kill things. You can obviously use ANYTHING to kill someone if you want. But a gun was solely designed to kill. And they're very efficient at doing so. Criminals are using guns for their intended purpose. To kill.

And no, I don't think all guns should be banned. But seriously, stop these stupid comparisons and the whole "people kill people" argument. It's stupid.

But how is the "people kill people" argument stupid? Every bit of it is true. The tools don't do the job, the people using the tools are the ones doing the jobs, no matter what the intended purpose of the tool is. It's as simple as that!

Zorloc, skeet shooting and target practice kill nothing, but the same tool is used. Knives, bats, screwdrivers, hammers, gasoline, and even Drano all have their purposes as well. But people have used all of them to kill other people. I'm in the midst of my second deployment of my third conflict. I carry a pistol every day, and a rifle every time I travel. I have yet to even aim either at another human being much less take a life. Thus far, my tools of the trade are simple ones of deterrence, and God willing they will remain so. But each day is a new one. Whether here or at home, people are going to find themselves facing down those who would kill them for nothing more than what is in their pockets, and do so with no more thought than throwing out the trash. Should that time come for me tomorrow, I believe I am ready and prepared for it. I would never deny anyone else the same opportunity, and obviously you would not either. But there are many who would. Because in their world, safe and secure from the reality the rest of us live, evil does not exist and the police stop crimes before they happen.

Wow CEW I didn't know that the primary designed purpose of guns is skeet shooting and target practice. Yeah these are really practical uses. When I can drive a gun to work or cut my steak with a gun then it will have a real purpose.

cgtrav: I didn't know knives were meant for killing either. I always thought they were for just cutting stuff... like food, rope, sticks for roasting weenies, and your steak. But knives killed more people this year than ALL rifles combined. Oddly enough, more people were beaten and kicked to death this year in the U.S. than were killed by rifles, but no one is suggesting mass amputations, despite the fact it would save more lives and end the gun debates.

Ought to come up with a new category of crime called "career criminal", being found guilty of which should be a mandatory death sentence.

Execute a few hundred thousand violent felons, and violent crime would go down. Simple math. Would save on warehousing the parasites.
