A 47-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a murder-for-hire investigation.
Cynthia Mills of Annapolis, Md., has been charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, solicitation of murder, and attempted first-degree murder. Investigators allege that Mills was having an affair with Wendell Mansel, who was arrested in August by police in Leesburg, Va., after he attempted to solicit an undercover officer to kill his wife.
Mansel, who is also from Annapolis, arrived at the meeting with the undercover officer with a gun and valuables, which he allegedly intended to use as partial payment for the hit. He is charged with attempted capital murder, murder-for-hire, and soliciting murder-for-hire. Mansel is being held without bond.
Investigators from Anne Arundel County and Virginia interviewed Mills during the subsequent investigation and say that she helped Mansel plan the killing and even provided some of the funds to pay the undercover investigator who posed as a hit man. Like Mansel, Mills is being held without bond.

Getting a divorce is always better and jail free
I guess the guy was trying to avoid having to give up a large chunk of the marital assets and pay alimony. Instead, the soon to be ex-wife is likely to get everything (since MD is not a community property state) and he and his mistress are likely to spend the rest of their lives, or at a minimum the next 25 years, in prison. I would imagine that at this point he as well as his mistress are wishing that he had just done the property split paid the alimony. In addition to avoiding the prison sentence, it would probably have been cheaper than what the legal bills will be for defense against the criminal charges.
When ever I read a story like this I wonder why thet tried to hire a cop. Can't they tell the difference between a cop and a crank dealer.
Where I come from, it's cheaper to keep her.
Mary,
Really?! If that's not sarc then you need to watch more cop shows. You really think an undercover cop still looks like a cop while under cover?!
Not even police chiefs can do that consistently.
Divorce should be sacrament. As soon as I finish this post I'm going to call the Pope and get him moving on it.
Well maybe. Maybe not.
GM Mary,Bill, Creekdog,
Around here they are often one and the same.
GM Tramp I'll just say it's not hard to find a person to do the deed. But it's hard to tell the one that won't sell you out down the line on a plee deal. That's the hard part. You don't want to know.
Not necessarily, kinda depends on how psycho your soon to be ex is.
Morning Creek Dog, Scooter, & Denver Bill
He should have married a woman like I got. She said I could have all the wives/girlfriends I could afford.
That pretty much limited me to just her. LOL
Going for coffee now.
For a similar, and much funnier, case Google: The Ballad of Mike and Dalia Dippolito.
Lock em both away for life. Conspiracy to commit murder can bring a life sentence in most states.
GM Okee,
Got the same model here at "our" house.
Mary apparently believes that movie and television images really reflect actuality. I guess she doesn't know that good guys do not all wear white hats and bad guys can dress sharply. You cannot tell just from appearances what someone has on their mind. The bad guy doesn't have to be a guy....
I just can't see why anyone would want a mistress.... I couldn't take more than one person nagging me at a time : )
Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it.
2 rules to follow if you are the breadwinner:
1) GET A PRE-NUP!
2) But if it's already too late for that then get an offshore bank account and start saving NOW. Your spouse cannot take what they cannot find in your joint accounts.
OR
There is always the alternative to not get married in the first place. Don't do it if you are not willing to part with your cash somewhere down the road. That is the problem with these idiots. They are falsely entitled and have zero forethought. They wait until they can't keep it in their pants anymore to think of a way to get out AND protect their hard earned cash, but by that point the spouse already has claim on 50%. And since they are too proud to let their husband/wife "win" in this war of the roses, they think risking their own freedom just to avoid parting with their money is the only option. Apparently they don't watch enough Dateline or 48 hours....... The cheating spouse ALWAYS takes the rap!!!
Perhaps Mansel was trying to avoid having to pay alimony--he probably succeeded.
Yeah,,but by the time he gets out of Prison, if ever, he won't have a dime.
What an idiot

!!!!!!!! i never would do such a thing but i've herd of it before.
This would never have happened if his wife had been a member of Weight Watchers.

I guess dumb asses can be found all over, even in Maryland.
Just now figuring that out ?
Maryland is full of them, look at their elected officials
I must not kill my wife. I must not kill my wife. I must not kill my wife. I must not kill my wife.
The guy was trying to avoid losing any assets to the wife and her lawyer. Can't blame him, the family courts in this country are notoriously and unabashedly anti-men. If you're a man, you're guilty until proven innocent. It's madness. I'm not saying his actions are justified, but what I am saying is that we live in a society that essentially cajoles people into resorting to savage measures like this.
It's like this: If someone has a gun to your head, there are a few ways of successfully resolving that situation that doesn't involve killing the other person.
For a Man in this country to sign the marriage contract is more or less akin to giving your wife a gun that she can point to your head at any time.
The gross bias and injustice against men is largely the brainchild of intellectually bankrupt feminists who have infected the public consciousnesses with their bigotry and hatred for masculinity. This pandemic of misandry manifests itself in many ways, but where it hurts men the most is when judges and lawyers reach into a man's pocket and take what he has earned from blood, sweat, and tears, then give it to the woman under the false pretense of "fairness." Consequently, a lot of men are now abolishing the concept of marriage all together.
So now Bald..he's not only lost all his assets, but he's lost his freedom too.
Good decision.
I wonder what the law is regarding this. Can he now blow all his assets on Lawyers fees, and basically do what he'd initially set out to do? Or does the wife, his potential victim, have some say in it?
Any lawyers with thoughts on this?
In this case, that apparently would have been correct.
Yoyu sound like a woman beater. After 30 years of divorce practice I can state with certainty that both sides get screwed, but men are the biggest crybabies in history. So embarrassed by my gender, as evidenced by little cretins such as yourself.
Issues much?
Janine, apparently you missed the part where I said his actions weren't justified....are you dyslexic?
skibum609: So after 30 years of practicing as a lawyer, you've brought your immense deductive reasoning powers down on me to conclude that I'm probably a woman beater all because I made a post demanding fairness for men in a family court system where women get child custody in 85 to 90% of cases, and men are forced to pay alimony in 96% of the cases even though thirty-three percent of higher-earning spouses are women. With mangina lawyers like these, who needs feminists?
Bald, did I say anything against you? I was just responding to your comment.
Wow...I can never understand people who have to resort to insults when they can't add anything intelligent to the conversation or justify their views.
Skibum...I wouldn't categorize you as a man at all, based on your remarks. So don't worry, you don't have to be embarassed for men, you really aren't one. If you are offended by Bald's comments (the truth), then you are a feminist as well. Nothing in his post would suggest he is a wife beater. You sound like the typical coward, liberal that throws words around without any thought process.
Sorry Janine, I thought you were being sarcastic in the reply you directed to me because you thought I supported the measures he took, after I CLEARLY stated that I did not think his actions were justified. We do get some dyslexic people on here sometimes...
Baldman, it goes both ways...what about when the wives make more money or having more asset than the husband? Divorce is not good for any gender, both can and will play dirty, only one that profit is the lawyers
No it doesn't go both ways cc1993:
I pointed out earlier that men pay 96% of alimony whereas women represent 33% of higher earning spouses and receive child custody in 90% of the cases. These are the facts, and you simply don't get to minimize the level of misandry that is polluting our society by telling me "it goes both ways." It doesn't. One sex is clearly getting the shorter end of the stick.
How refreshing, no homosexuality involved.
Well the story is not over, and prison is coming.
Well, on the bright side, they like to seek out criminals. Where they're going, crooks will be easily found.
I personally don't see how hiring a hit man is a smart thing to do. You've got a guy who will kill for money, and you've got the money. What could possibly go wrong?
Why do people get married again? Family values? Civility?
Ummmm....yeah.
State sanctioned insanity.
Insanity is hereditary.
You get it from your children.
Funny, but you pretty much have to be insane to have children in the first place.
I think it's a fair statement to say that a kid costs $1,000 per month. That's poverty level for a single person in the USA and you don't want to raise a kid in poverty, right?
So, 18 years of raising a kid at $1,000 per month is 216 months at $1,000 per month (probably more, kids stay home after 18 all the time) and you're talking about nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
Insanity? Yeah. You spent a quarter of a million dollars on something you're not even allowed to keep.
Mary,
most cops are crooks
We have the strictest gun laws in NJ in the country. No high capacity magazines, no assault rifles, no carry or concelaed weapons. I dare any of you libtards to go into Camden, Newark, Vineland and tell me how it works out for you.
And what does NJ gun laws have to do with this story? I go to Newark for work 5-6 times a month, and the gun laws work fine, thanks for asking.
NJ gun laws have nothing to do with the story but Robert was just itching to say "libtards."
So, now do I double dare you Robert?
And libtards is sooo lame. Try to invent a new word
that's some cold sh*t!!
all just animals living among this earth.. with somewhat of a conscience..
Wonder if his wife is still partying and laughing her ass off.
What a scumbag.. This'll sure make a good episode of "Unfaithful".
99.9% of hitmen on Craigslist are undercover cops.
criagslist has a hitman section?
Yeah IA....you didn't see the update as of the 1st of the year? ;P
Just for the laughs......
For some reason, wives tend to like this joke........
I'm not married nor have a significant other....but I found that funny lol
Thanks for the laugh!
Somebody is really looking out for this guys wife. I would say she was very lucky. How many times, can you crack a conspiracy like this before the actual crime is done? All the news we read about are all after the fact.
You haven't been paying attention. There are many stories of spouses plotting to kill their significant other only to be caught by undercover police. One of the most amusing was from Florida (surprise) just a couple of years ago. The young woman wanted her husband murdered, so the cops set up an elaborate ruse. They responded to a "reported" shooting at her house, video recorded her as she arrived, told her the husband was deceased and took her to the police station. She put on a bravura performance of grief and tears, until she saw her husband at the police station. Priceless...
And now he becomes somebodies wife;-} I hope they don't want to put out a hit on him. Takers will be easy to find where hes going to be.
another example of classy, empowered women.
and men get the blame again.
nice, well-bred, American woman. the National Organization of Women stands and applauds you for your temperament, your style, your other-worldy grace.
so much with the love affair with women.
They're SICK as men - don't tell me they ain't.
All I'm reading from your post is "blah blah blah *angst and anger against women* blah blah blah".
The report stated the man planned to murder his wife and the mistress, who was in connection with the plan, was helping fund a portion of the money to have the deed done. Believe it or not, but both men and women do this. It's not just women who come up with this stuff and fuel it by convincing the man to kill his wife. It happens in the reverse roles too. In this case, the man came up with the idea and, with help from his mistress, tried to pay an undercover cop to shoot the guy's wife.
@STATE; I agree with you 100%!!!!
Oh brother...
Glad it was the undercover cop they ended up contacting and not someone who was a hitman for hire. The wife got lucky in that aspect. Hopefully she'll be pushing to get a divorce from this guy asap.
It's really sad that people choose to be greedy in their thinking. Whether it was to kill her to escape paying alimony and divorce fees or to collect on any insurance policies, the husband will now get to pay for his greed. The mistress will also get to pay as well for her grievances. I just don't understand how anyone would think that this is the best option to take when it is just easier to go through the process of divorce.
Cheaper to keep her ole' boy!!! Now you got nothing but a prison sentence to look forward to. ENJOY!!!!
Could afford a HITMAN but not a divorce? What the hell?!
Let's say they succeeded in murdering his wife. Shouldn't they be looking over their respective shoulders in case either one wanted to dump the other in the same fashion they got rid of the wife? That could be a life sentence of another kind!
