Two slain teens among nine shot since Friday in Chicago, authorities say

CHICAGO -- Three people have been killed and six others wounded in Chicago gun violence since Friday afternoon, authorities said. Several of the shooting victims, including two of the people killed, were teenagers.

The most recent fatality happened about 12:50 a.m. (1:50 a.m. ET) Sunday, when a man was shot and killed in the Lawndale neighborhood.

Damian Barnes, 22, was sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle when a gunman got in and shot him in the back, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Earlier in the weekend, Rey Dorantes, 14, was shot multiple times in the chest while standing on the porch of his home in the West Town neighborhood about 11:50 p.m. Friday, according to police. He would have turned 15 on Tuesday, according to a source.

Another teen was killed in a fatal shooting that happened about 6:40 p.m. Friday in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood. Victor Vega, 15, and another male were walking when an unknown male approached and fired shots, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The attack was gang-related, a source said.

More stories from NBC Chicago

The two slain teens were the youngest of at least eight people shot in Chicago since Friday afternoon.

A 17-year-old was in an alley in South Normal Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when he was shot in the shoulder, according to police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

A male walked into Rush University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the hip about 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. He was shot in the Lawndale neighborhood, police said.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were wounded in a shooting in the Chatham neighborhood just after 4 p.m. Friday, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

Vice President Joe Biden will present his task force's gun policy recommendations Thursday – among them, most likely, to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

The younger boy was shot in the thigh was transported to hospital in critical condition. The 17-year-old suffered a graze wound to the chest.

In an apparently unrelated shooting in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, a 17-year-old was shot in the torso and arm in a gang-related attack about 2 p.m.

And in the Uptown neighborhood, a 19-year-old man was shot in the buttocks about 12:50 p.m. near North Clarendon and West Buena avenues, police said. Ald. James Cappleman said in a Tweet that the shooting might have stemmed from a drug deal gone wrong.

9 dead in Chicago? I am sorry to hear of the deaths/killings but how is that gun ban doing for you Rahm Emanuel?

I am not making fun of him, Chicago or the deaths in your city. What I am trying to bring attention to is that Chacigo has the strictest gun control laws in the Nation and they have the highest deaths. Not one of these shootings was done by a semiautomatic rifle and I didn't hear any mention of a "high capacity" magazine. You have a problem in your city and it isn't guns. Its the reason behind the people in your city are killing each other. Yes guns are being used but they are only the instrument they employ to carry out their violent reaction to life and the society. Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to ban all guns nation wide and blame the problems of his city on them. Well Mayor Rahm Emanuel you have a problem in Chicago with the people in Chicago dealing with issues in Chicago. Your ban isn't working and you just want to blame the issue on Guns. If you were correct the more you ban guns the more crime would go down. Look at the Chicago police reports...the REAL PROOF FROM YOUR OWN POLICE FORCE AND ALSO THE FBI WEB SITE) Over the last years as gun laws became stricter in Chicago gun violence INCREASED! Clearly stricter gun control did nothing yet you call for more. Why don't you do your job and fix the root cause of the problems in the city you run and stay out of the national gun debate. Clearly your "fix" in Chicago didn't work, why don't you come back and contact the media when you can show something that you actually accomplished that did work and cut down the deaths.

I'm reminded of Rooster Cogburn when I read your comment.

The lawyer: Come now.......how many people have you shot?

Cogburn:......Shot or killed?

It says 9 shot......only two died. Still in all though, not a lot to be proud of in that.

Over the last 9 months alone. the DHS has purchased 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. That's over five bullets for every man, woman and child in the US. Does anyone else find that troubling?

No , Arms and ammo manufactures need to make a gross profit and with Americas shift back to McCarthyism it a growth Industry , Some on the right are concerned with the commies taking over when it looks like most commie nations are more capitalistic than we are .

Our government is working hard to ensure that government minions are very well armed, and that citizens are unarmed. That fact alone should be troubling.

you guys are right on target, this has slowly been creeping up,NDAA(unconstitutional)"homeland security"(unconstitutional). i have to wonder why this illegal entity was even created, was our military unable to provide security for this nation? i don't think so. it has been the road we are on since 911 in this country, and dhs has also bought bullet proof checkpoints this past year, why? it is really troubling when you look at the whole picture. and liberals don't get it and we are all crazy? i think not,i have not just awakened from sleep, and i look at the whole picture not just what the media has to say.

2 things come to mind , (1) why are republicans so opposed to abortion when odds are the parents of gang banger are the one most likely to abort , (2) if major companies like Mobile/Exxon are running nationwide ads stating we rank 25th in education , what does it say about Americas true feeling towards education .

Maybe its to be expected when our defence budget is larger the the next 12 countries combined . We appear more concerned with policing the world than educating our kids

The biggest problem is the same folks around the would who scream the US shouldn't be the world police man call the US every time they need a cop. Or a meal ticket. Or some one to clean up the mess. Then when we do show up and give them what they wanted, they hate us. Usually because we didn't respond as fast as they wanted or didn't give them enough free stuff.

On the abortion issue, I would have to keep it legal because while i disagree with it, I also understand that mistakes get made and things go wrong.

On the issue of guns, ban what ever you like. It will solve nothing and make people who would follow the law other wise into criminals. As well as enrich the gangs and embolden the thugs. The question I have is what will the anti- gun folks blame when guns or rifles are no longer available to the law abiding citizens?

another question i would have is what is going to protect the first amendment without the second? do they realize the second is the ONLY reason we still have the first? and although i disagree with abortion i will not demand my beliefs onto others(i am republican) not ALL repubs are BAD just like not ALL dems are,but you can't convince them of that.

I am not familiar with Chicago's crime stats, but I'd guess that this represents "business as usual" for Chicago; that it is not actually news; and that the appearance of this article here is purely politically motivated.

Well folks ya'll best to get used to this, not only in Chicago, but coming to a neighborhood near you!!! With all these liberal programs that dump money into programs that don't really work, soon and very soon the entire country is going to be like Chicago, one big freaking ghetto!!! This is what happens when people don't take responsibility for their actions, don't have to work for a living, are given everything by taking from others, are not encouraged to get an education, and on and on and on. And in spite of this, children are told how great they are, how intelligent they are, and how they can do no wrong!!!! The answer is rather simple: don't reward negative behavior, punish it in the strictest manner possible, and force people to be responsible by not making it easy for them to be irresponsible.

Chicago and Illinois are being run by liberal democrats that STILL think its ok to pass unconstitutional gun laws.

They have been ordered to legalize conceal and carry, but are now hatching more illegal laws in springfield.

THe city is a good example of how the welfare failed policies only breed more criminals. How proud all these democrats must be be of their wildly successful policies.

Where is the outrage over gang killings that happen EVERY weekend, more than 500 in chicago last year.

I would be willing to bet most of these people shot are on government assistnace in some form or another.

If the purpose of gun laws were to prevent crime, they obviously don't work at all. If the purpose of gun laws is to increase the relative power of an armed government over the people, they are working quite well.

The bad guys will always find a way to get guns (if they dont already have them) so your just taking guns from the innocent. How about instead of making the country handle the situation parents actaully step up and raise their children properly so that kids dont get into gangs and commit crimes. Thats how it used to be... and we didnt have gun violence the way we do now.

Chicago is implementing the "self cleaning oven policy" that is in use here in New Orleans. Thugs killing thugs with the occaisional innocent bystander (usually a child) thrown in. A lot of us are packing heat though and can speed up the oven cleaning if need be (like if you or your kid is the bystander). Only good guys with guns can control bad guys with guns. Remember the cowboys? They weren't cops.

Slow week in Chicago. Can't hit the 600 mark with this low of a production rate. Notice the areas that seem to reappear in every article. Rahm does not live there. He won't be visiting soon.

As for Barry his home town is in Hawaii. He lived in Illinois so he could get elected. Do you actually think he will be back when his reign is over. Not likely.

Just goes to show that if you spare the rod you spoil the child. These people have grown up in the ghettos. They are 4th and 5th generation welfare children who have no respect for themselves or any one else since they have never seen any respect in their own "homes". Women who have children from numerous males who have not stayed around after getting them pregnet. Families who rely on welfare for their only support and then they sell their food stamps so they can buy drugs. Is it any wonder why these people want to stike out and hurt whoever they can? The only authority figure these children have are the gang leaders who start training them at a young age. Welfare doesn't work! Socialism doesn't work! This is what the democratic leaders want. This is their voter base. They want the rest of us to live like this also and they won't quit until we are enslaved or dead. Of course, they want to take our weapons away first since as long as we are armed we can revolt and put them in the graveyard where they belong. Do not be deceived by the smooth talking politicians currently "leading" this country. They open their mouths and Satan speaks. Open your eyes and look, really look at what is happening in this country.

So what’s the difference between a Liberal, a Conservative and a Southern Conservative?

You’re walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small chil...dren. Suddenly, an Islamic terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises his knife, and charges you and your family.
FYI: You’re carrying a concealed 9mm and your wife’s carrying her 38 Special. You’re both expert shots. You have only seconds before he reaches you and your family. So, what would you do?

A Liberal’s answer: “I don’t have enough information to answer that question!” For example:
Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack us? Could we run away? What is my wife thinking? What psychic impact will this have on my kids? Could I possibly swing my gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Do our pistols have appropriate safety features? Why am I carrying a loaded concealed weapon anyway? What kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be satisfied just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he stabs me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? Is this our fault? We shouldn’t have come this way! We need to raise taxes and clean up this neighborhood! We need to make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage terrorist behavior! I need time to discuss this with some friends and try to come to a consensus of opinions! I’m confused!

        A Conservative’s answer: BANG!

A Southern Conservative's answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

So, were any of these shooting done by citizens with legally owned guns? Was there anything about these crimes that woudl have been prevented by gun control laws? 100 times more people died to falling last year than to guns, does this mean we need to pass gravity control laws? How do these statistic compare to stabbings and other forms of killing? More people in the US died from being hit with blunt objects last year then with guns, maybe we should pass laws against anything someone can hold in their hand? Tell those promoting gun control to first get rid of the guns that they use for protection before they start cramming their hipocrisy down everyone else's throats.
