Former President George H.W. Bush released from hospital

Former President George H.W. Bush is now back at home after being treated for bronchitis and a persistent cough. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Former President George H.W. Bush was released Monday from a Houston hospital after seven weeks of treatment for bronchitis, a bacterial infection and a persistent cough, the Bush family spokesman said.

Hospital officials said that Bush, 88, was discharged to his Houston home and would continue treatment.

"Mr. Bush has improved to the point that he will not need any special medication when he goes home, but he will continue physical therapy," said Dr. Amy Mynderse, the physician in charge of the former president's care.

Bush was admitted to the Methodist Hospital on Nov. 29, suffering from severe bronchitis.

After initial expectations that he would be hospitalized for just a few days turned out to be wrong, his office disclosed that he was in intensive care in December because physicians were having difficulty controlling a fever that developed after the cough was mostly resolved and were concerned about balancing his medication.

Last week, sources close to the former president indicated that his condition had improved. Visitors to Bush said he was in a good mood and joking with family members and hospital staff and that he was “looking forward to heading home.”

"I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist who took such good care of me," the former President said. "Let me add just how touched we were by the many get-well messages we received from our friends and fellow Americans. Your prayers and good wishes helped more than you know, and as I head home my only concern is that I will not be able to thank each of you for your kind words."

Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine. On Jan. 6, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. They are the longest-married presidential couple, and Bush is the nation's oldest living president.

Bronchitis is a common condition in which the bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed and produce mucus, which creates the need to cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can turn serious in people with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly. Symptoms such as chest pain, weakness and coughing typically last two weeks, but can linger for as long as two months.

Bush was elected president of the United States in 1988, the capstone of a long career of public service.

He was a Texas Republican member of the House of Representatives in the 1960s and 1970s and head of the CIA in 1976-1977. The organization’s headquarters in Langley, Va., was later renamed the “George Bush Center for Intelligence.”

Bush lost his first bid for the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency in 1980, at which time Ronald Reagan chose him to be his running mate. He went on to serve two terms as Reagan’s vice president before winning the presidency. He was defeated for re-election in 1992 by Bill Clinton.

In late 2004, Bush teamed up with Clinton to raise money for the victims of the Asian tsunami. That effort was so successful, the two former presidents did the same for Katrina victims in 2005.

Best of luck and 'Get Well Soon' to former Pres. GHW Bush.

Perspective is everything, funny how GHW Bush seems reasonable, likeable and competent compared to his son and the current crop of Republicans.

ozzieyo1-7277359 - only in your demented mind. George W. Bush is and will always be the WORST President of modern time. Even the Republican party pretty much acknowledges this and refuses to utter his name.

Seeking, Time will tell a different tale.

How much time you need ? The more time passes, the more you find the truth of all the corruption in his court. Only problem is, no one in the government has the balls to prosecute him and his band of merry men. That's the true disgrace to the U.S. and the reason it has lost all respect and credibility, and became a laughing stock around the world.

First, let me say that no matter the circumstances, ALL Presidents are basically good patriotic men (or women). George HW Bush was highly patriotic and loves America as much as anyone. Bush 43 is also a patriotic; his problem was Cheney and his ties to Halliburton. My guess is that Cheney made untold millions from the Iraqi war which "W" wad buffooned into. Concerning Bush 41, I disagreed with most of his policies even though i was a republican at the time, but I never then nor would I now, question his patriotism as some would do. The biggest mistakes were "read my lips, no new taxes" and inviting Limbaugh to the White Houst for a "strategy" session.

"George HW and W best two presidents since Reagan"

You folks who participated in the absurd exercise of collapsing this comment should be ashamed of yourselves. There is absolutely nothing in this comment which is inflammatory or of no value.

'ozzieyo1' expressed a simple, strait-forward personal opinion. If you disagree with that opinion, fine. But trying to silence the opinions of others with which you disagree - especially those presented in a civil and non-offensive manner such as this comment - is just childish, boorish behavior ... and frankly it's un-American.

You should be defending other's right to speak freely, even when you disagree; not attempting to silence them. Come on folks, let's grow up. Please, let's demonstrate a little civility and maturity, and show that we aren't fearful of mere words and opinions.

Liberals only like Republicans when they are really, really old or dead. Then they go on and on about how they miss "that kind" of Republican. That keeps them from being held responsible for the sh*##y things they said about them when they were in office.

Counter statement:

With all due respect, neither of these statements are true, and they speak ONLY to personal hyper-partisan mindsets and perspectives, and extreme generalizations.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. If you don't approve of or support the divisiveness and polarized political rhetoric, ...stop fueling it.

Food for thought.

Unfortunately for your argument is that it doesn't work that way. Republicans do not wish that Obama were more of a "Carter kind of Democrat" Nor are they positing that LBJ wouldn't be welcome in today's Democrat party. The strange new respect is always given to Republicans who are either out of long power, dead or in some way criticize a Republican position.

Yikes! B.S. alert -First Cheney was completely divested from Haliburton before he became VP. In fact he let a huge stock option expire that would have been very lucrative to him personally but would have caused P.R. problems (He donated his entire first stock option to charity. the dude was never about the money once he was financially secure). His only payment after leaving Haliburton was a severance package that was in place when he took the position and was due regardless of the companies profitability. Second - if you read both of their memoirs you would understand that W was in complete control of the White House and the decisions made were his own - including Iraq. Cheney actually was not pleased that Bush went against his council several times. Makes me think you are lying about having been a Republican at the time. You are to wedded to the liberal narrative.

I do not question that you honestly believe that. My argument is: That is your own personal, partisan mindset, perspective and generalization.

But you don't speak for the personal opinions of all other "conservatives" and "Republicans". I personally know many conservatives and Republicans who would flatly disagree with you.

And I don't speak for the personal opinions of all other moderates and Independents. I personally know many moderates and Independents who would flatly disagree with me.

Making sweeping generalizations about all those with whom we disagree, and labelling them (often derisively and pejoratively), merely contributes to the divisiveness and polarized political rhetoric in America.

So, if you don't like that, and you don't want that, ...then stop contributing to it.

Here, read about your hero GHW Bush. Bush and his father Prescott, were evil to the core.

It appears he has tried to atone for his earlier sins, but if this link is all true, he has lots more to do. Bush 43 left the worst legacy of the 3, but I believe he was used by more powerful men (the neocons) to achieve their goals, because he is dumber than a doughnut. The other reason his legacy is worse, is the internet hadn't come about to reveal the horrible actions committed by his father and grandfather at the time.

                Uh, Mr. Alan & Mr.Fartcrackcheesemutt;

Can you sit there and tell me that you feel better paying (his welfare check) for my (I disowned him 15 yrs ago) 462lb, never had a job in his life (not even a paper route), 31 yr old father of 2, that drives around in a 10 yr old Honda plastered with Obama stickers lazy P.O.S. Nephew?

Excuse me it's not really a "welfare" check, it's a S.S.D.I. because when he was 16 he dropped out of school and went to live for the summer in one of those "Hippie Communes" in Pennsyvania, where during the course of the summer he blew his brains out with drugs and booze and then"they" shipped him home to my brother on a Greyhound Bus. He now has his own apt. with utilities paid for by "US" along with a FREE phone that he calls "His Obama phone". His little honey lays around because she dosen't feel like even so much as changing the diapers, because she is "disabled" too. So my Brother and Niece "babysit" so the kids don't get taken away from our family.

Now here is the biggest kicker, tho' he has never paid a dime in taxes in his life, he makes $34 more a month than I will when I turn 67 in a few years according to my last S.S. yearly statement. And you want to deny a man that served his country (And NO I am not fond of Him and I did not vote for him) what he has cost us versus the 462lb piece of wasted space that has never contributed ANYTHING to our society? Sir, I leave you to your favorite flavor of what ever Kool-Aid you are drinking.

Two months in the hospital is a luxury? Wow, in what reality is that? My brother did that repeatedly when he was alive (cancer) - he had worked all his adult life and had very good insurance. Bet he didn't once think how lucky he was to be spending so much of his life in the hospital.

I had a severe stroke. I was given 6 days in the hospital, and then shipped off to a third-rate rehab center for two weeks. I was released after two weeks with no motor skills other than my left hand. I signed up for out patient rehab and after four months was told that Medicare and my supplimentary insurance would no longer pay. So now I am home alone, trying to teach myself to walk and survive. Where is all my help from MEDICARE.

Opto, you get shipped off to rehab when you medically don't need the hospital anymore.

My mother spent 2mos in Intensive care once. You want to talk about EXPENSIVE. Thankfully her insurance covered most of it.

Opto, sorry for your plight but your story is a good lesson for everyone.......DO NOT count on geovernment programs to give you good care or service. Not going to happen, period!

Medicare paid for rehab for my in laws, no problem. The issue occurs when someone says you are not going to improve.

You might want to consider asking Congress to rethink their vote because Presidents can't take us to war without them.

His deserves respect just because he was a president? As LastRebel says--respect is earned. You can respect the office, not necessarily the inhabitant--or in this case--the former inhabitant.

There was never a Declaration of War by Congess. Congress and the Senate are just corporate fascists representatives. There has been no declaration of war for the drone attacks either. The US government is a fraud, an enemy to the nations of the world and an enemy to it's people. Iraq has NEVER been a aggressor against the US. Iraq was given permission to invade Kuwait by US Ambassador April Glaspie because the Kuwaitis were slant drilling into Iraqi oil fields. Iraq was also planning on dropping the US dollar as payment for it's oil, accepting only gold for payments. Iraq, like Libya did not have a Rothschild owned bank controlling it's monetary system. Sure they had "Weapons of Mass Destruction," and the US government knew that because they had the receipt from selling it to them. Saddam was still a better man than either of the Bushes.

I am not a Republican nor a Democrat, both parties are sold out and contolled by the same Communists/Fascists interests. To Hell with the snake with one Red and one Green eye. Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr, and Obama are all frontmen for the international organized crime syndicate that has hijacked the "Republic" that the nation was founded to be in the first place. The system is corrupt from the top, down. 9-11 was an inside job. If you do not think so, go watch the collapse of WTC-7, straight down into it's foundation, despite having less damage than buildings adjacent to WTC 1&2 that were not a part of the WTC Complex. The adjacent buildings were also not covered by the $3.5 Billion insurance policy taken out by lease-owner Larry Silverstein only months before. Bin Laden was treated in US hosptial in Dubai in July 2001. Bin Laden was surrounded in Tora Bora in December 2001. A helocopter flew in and flew out, and the troops were then ordered to abort the mission. He was given medical care until he died in November 2007, not on May 1, 2011; the raid was fake, and those involved were killed by the CIA.

Those people have been fighting each other for thousands of years, so boohoo about the Kurds.

I did not vote any of them. I always vote for a Write-In.

The Bush and the Bin Laden families are the two top shareholders in the military weapons manufacturing business. Eisenhower was right in his warning in his farewell address. The Military Industrial Complex is undermining the Constitution and setting up a de-facto Communist/Fascist dictatorship in the US.

Wow!! My worldview does not conform to the spoon-fed propaganda that the mainstream media has given you, and you call me "delusional." If I did not believe "Pravda" in the Soviet Union, then the State would call me "delusional" there too. Actually, Pravda(a Russian word meaning "Truth") is telling much more truth than the US mainstream media. Even Satan can quote scripture and cast himself as an angel of light. I guess if I do not believe Satan in his purest form, I am delusional then too, huh? I get my worldview from personal research and deduction, not from parrotting the bs which is present by MSNBC or other outlets. Generally, if you assume the exact opposite of what you are presented in the news, you are closer to the truth. You make a good "Soviet" or good "Nazi" Ozzie!! But if you think you feel froggy, I advise you to jump, but first ask me "how high?"

The US Government runs Al-Qaeda in Egypt, Syria, and Libya; the US Government is Al-Qaeda!! Both political parties are bought off, and used as a divide and conquer mechanism over the American people. I believe in a UNITED "We The People" States of America, so I must be "delusional." So be it...

Saddam is better than the Bushes? Too many nuts here tonight. So some of you do not mind the genocide brought by Saddam or the invasion of Kuwait. Wow!

You really need to do a little research. GHW Bush, set Saddam up for the invasion of Kuwait to give the U.S. reason to invade Iraq. You guys believe everything you're told. America WILL fall because people like you are the majority who vote with such ignorance to the facts.

Sorry, Lulu, but I agree with Last Rebel. I have always believed that the First Gulf War was unnecessary. Saddam, after asking, was told that the U.S. was not interested in his "border disputes." Do you really believe Saddam would have invaded Kuwait if he knew we would get involved? He was not the brightest star in the firmament, but I think he would have cancelled his plans, as it were, if he thought a Western coalition would move against him. I am serious when I write that I want to hear evidence that would make me have a different opinion. I respected President Bush 41 until that time.

Still no problem with genocide. Sorry for your lack of humanity. And siding with this idiot who claims to live in Brasil is really pathetic. He probably lives off his relatives stateside.

My folks are dead A__hole. My father served in the Air Force in Puerto Rico where I was born at Ramey Air Force Base. His wing commander was Col. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., pilot of the ENOLA GAY, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima I served in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army and was stationed in Ft. Campbell, Ky. Served in Vietnam in 72-73 and I left the U.S. and now have permanent residence in Brasil. Happy to live in a country that doesn't believe war is the solution to our worlds problems.

But you are hateful and stupid. I do not think war is a solution but when they come for you like 9-11, you have to respond. I bet you will say 9-11 was planned by the Bushes. So dumb!

So in that time after time, election after election, I can plainly observe that the only "Change" that there has been is that the "We The People" are continually SHORT-CHANGED, and the fact that I am not too happy about that, means to you that I have "so much hatred" for those guilty of effectively TREASON against "We The People?" Am I to you supposed to applaud their DIS-Service to our country? I am asking, because I want to know if you are ignorant or just plain on the other side. The fact is all US presidents in the 20th Century with the exception of perhaps one are guilty of TREASON in having sold this nation out to foreign interests.

Why don't you take the time to look at the article. Are you scared of the truth ? The trials were based on EVIDENCE AND TESTIMONY in a New York Federal Court. What is it about that, that you can't understand. It's easy enough to verify through Freedom of Information Act. So, how am I lying ? If you have a Masters, surely you understand how to do research ??? It's not a conspiracy theory, it's all based on fact and they came to a verdict of GUILTY on all charges.

Lulu must be a resident of La-La Land, because in comparing the amount of iraqi dead in their own wars they have had in the area for 1000's of years, verses the amount of the Iraqi casualties of the Bush 41-43 wars against them. Saddam Hussein is responsible for far less murders than Bush. Soldiers are aquitted that die in war, but a pair of leaders who would participate in the ritual slaughter, abject treason in sending two generations of American young men and women off to fight no-win so they could get rich off the conflict is not a just war, it is murder against both peoples. So you are damn right, none of the leaders of this "two-horned/"two-partied professional dialectic acting a hysteria will have mercy from me upon them!! That includes that low-life that is in Office now!! Obama is 666!!
