'Incredible chaos': Punches thrown, furniture smashed as baby shower turns into brawl

Three men and a 14-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with a chaotic brawl at a Massachusetts baby shower on Saturday.

Punches were thrown and furniture was smashed during the violent clash at Club Luis De Camoes, a Portuguese social venue in Stoughton, south of Boston, police said.

"It was quite a scene," Stoughton Police Department Executive Officer Robert Devine told NBC News. "It was just incredible chaos."

Police have arrested three men -- Patrick Lopez, 24; Paulo Depina, 24; Aderito Deandrade, 24 -- and an unidentified 14-year-old boy in connection with the incident. They are each charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and other offenses.

Four police officers who responded to the scene sustained minor injuries, Devine said. They did not require hospital treatment, he added.

Police said they believe the brawl began when one of the suspects standing near the bar punched a man in the back of the head and flung a bottle in the air, nearly striking the bartender. Others then joined in the fight.

At that point, a Stoughton police officer working detail at the event called for backup, anticipating more attacks. When the first wave of five backup cops arrived at the scene, the melee was in full tilt at the club, which was filled with over 200 people, FOX 25 in Boston reported.

"Oh my God. It was just nonstop. There would be a skirmish in this corner, we’d go over to address it, and then another one would start up somewhere else," Sgt. Daniel McGowan told The Enterprise newspaper.

One of the suspects allegedly crushed a chair and hurled bottles in the air, police said. As the brawl got more heated, at least 15 additional officers rushed to the baby shower.

All the while, police worried that one of the many children at the scene would get injured.

"Our primary concern as police officers was to try to safeguard children in the room," Devine said.

At the height of the chaos, one of the police officers stood on top of a table and pleaded with parents to evacuate with their children, Devine said.

It took police almost 45 minutes to subdue the crowd, according to police.

Men do not belong at a Baby Shower. This is a time for the women to get together.

Men + alcohol+ Baby Shower = Chaos.

Yeah...the women probably promised them that a soccer game would be on and they could drink for free. Probably got there and the soccer game was PPV and the drinks were not free.

That would tick any Eurotrash man off. I'm with Don....why would a man go to a baby shower anyway...let alone a bunch of drunk men.....wtf?

Why can't you have men at baby showers?? Aren't they just overgrown babies --- with guns --- and no brains?

What struck me as the interesting thing here is the line about the officer "working detail at the event." So these people not only threw a baby shower at a bar, but they knew to hire a cop (or the bar did) to work security at it? I mean, the story specifically says "working at the event," not "who just happened to be the bouncer at the bar" or anything like that. So what kind of baby shower needs to have hired security working at it? Obviously they knew a bunch of thugs was going to be there. WTH?

OMG - What a civilized country we live in! People fighting at a baby shower, a women set ON FIRE because she wanted her boyfriend to carry the laundry, or the grandson who killed his grandmother over what to watch on TV! Oh yeah, civilized country all right. Keep the blinders on folks! Keep spewing your "logic" that it's the "other" people who aren't civilized. Yeah right!

These people were Cape Verdeans (African Americans), NOT Portuguese. They have Portuguese names and the shower was held at a local Portuguese club. Cape Verde, located off the coast of Africa, was once a Portuguese colony.

AtomAnt,

You've lost your perspective on this. Out of 360 MILLION people this occurred- once! Much other violence would never have made it past the local news level if it weren't for the internet. There seems to be so much violence that would endanger everybody simply because every violent act in a population of 360 million people (and spread across a continent!) gets compressed so that it appears to be local news. And why? To get people like you all upset and drawing the wrong conclusions, which leads to doing things like making faulty assessments which leads to making faulty solutions for the perceived "problem". I find it amazing that so many people who think that they're so smart never tweak onto the fact that they're being manipulated in this manner. Why are you focusing in on the few people who engaged in this fight at the baby shower instead of the 359,999,995 Americans who had nothing to do with it? And the same for every other violent crime!? Yes, we have our share of people here who act barbarously, but the vast overwhelming majority DO conduct themselves in a civilized manner.

Sorry to rain on your "SH/T ON AMERICA" parade, but you need a dose of reality. Why haven't you fled to those lands you consider to be "civilized"? You had best remember that those people will kill you too- they'll just give a different reason for doing so. Life here could easily be much, much worse.

@AtomAnt... Go live somewhere else if you don't like it. There are crazy people in all countries that will commit sick and heinous crimes. Yeah, it's messed up, but the percentage of those screwed up people in society as a whole is low compared to the rest of us normal people. This is nothing new, its only the instant in your face media and twitter and facebook etc reality of the day that makes everyone scared that it will happen in their own town any day now. Distorted reality. News media hype and even the government is scaring the public into giving away more personal rights then we already have in the last 11+ years. The government keeps chipping away at those rights, mainly because sheep like you keep stuffing your ears with your own wool.

Merlin/Lord Pyrinc -

Actually my post was a response to other posts on other articles (gun control) where people want to use the reason that we are a civilized society and shouldn't need guns. But your point(s) that this is a very, very small percentage falls right in with my beliefs about guns, gun control, and violence. An even smaller percentage of the guns in this country are used illegally but the vast majority of gun owners are law biding citizens. So thanks for making my case about how the minority smears the majority.

I agree with both of you on giving up our rights. We are being brilliantly manipulated into giving up our rights and the sheep ( of which I am not one, Lord Pyrinc) just can't what to give up any of them to feel "Safe". Keep up the fight Gentlemen!

In all seriousness, I'm not sure why people are making a big deal about where they had the party. Has no one here ever rented out a hall, like a Knights of Columbus etc? I think this "Portuguese Hall" is the same thing. Just a rented out hall.

It appears the men were not actually 'at' the baby shower, but drinking at the bar (what about the 14 year old kid?) and their fight just interfered with the baby shower, which just happened to be happening in the same social hall. This is happens when you allow booze. I would have kicked their sorry as*** out as soon as they started drinking. It's sad and unnecessary that people think they can't enjoy themselves without getting drunk. They should grow up before they do any more damage and definitely before they "settle down" and breed. Women have an obligation to pick more responsible mates, if not for themselves, then certainly for the children. If they think this is normal behavior, they may be right, but it isn't healthy.

It's not the booze, it's the people involved. Most know how to drink responsibly, and know their own limits. I went to many family get-togethers as a kid that included alcohol (Irish-Catholic family), and we never had anyone even yell in anger. The only times I really remember anyone being drunk was when the three sisters (mom/grandmas to each family) would get sloshed and start singing old songs.

If we had made funding available for more counseling, perhaps these fellows would been better able to deal with their disagreements. Certainly a Republican issue in any case...

The question shouldnt be "why were men at a baby shower." The baby shower was held at a public bar and the men were at the bar and not affiliated with the baby shower.

The question therefore should be, "Who throws a baby shower at a bar??"

You people do not know what you are talking about. This article is skimpy on details. The men were at the baby shower. The shower was for the younger sister of one of the guys that got arrested. They had invited a 150 ppl and expected people to crash so they hired a police detail. It is a private club, not a bar. Please obtain more information before spouting off non-truths.

And the guys were from a place in a crappy suburb of Boston called Brockton where the drugs, prostitution, violence, etc. run rabid.

My first thought.... Was a camera crew there filming a reality television show?

I know many people including myself that have had baby showers at bar/restaurants. They were in the middle of the afternoon and not open to the general public during the shower. And having worked in the industry it is a large venue that is free for use to friends and former workers of the owners. Some have been co-ed and some just women.

This one was held from 8pm - 1 am at a private club. Not the middle of the afternoon. It's typical Brockton people (the town they are from).

men at baby shower, that's what you get..... pent up anger from having been forced to go there in the first place, being emasculated by the feminist nazi that is your wife.... oh yeah they'll say you don't have to go if you dont want to, but just wait for your punishment at home later...... why anyone get married and have babies when women are like that is beyond me.....

I only laughed a little at your comment. The part about the men being forced to go is true. The last baby shower that I attended with men, the dad-to-be was so disgruntled. He kept asking, "Why do I have to be here?!" And the answer was because his wife, my dear friend and mom-to-be said, "So". LOL

WRONG! They are Cape Verdeans (African Americans), NOT Europeans. Cape Verde is a former Portuguese colony off the coast of Africa. Their language is Portuguese and Creole.

My father-in-law was third generation Portuguese from Massachusetts. There are a lot of people of Portuguese descent in Massachusetts. Many of them were fishermen originally. They were a tough bunch. Today, many of them have moved on to other locations and send their kids to college. The Portuguese are like every other immigrant group. They are European, not that it matters, and some are good and some are not.

When you have thousands if not millions of people around like these imbeciles. No control of gun or weapons laws is going to help. Everyone needs to wake up. It's the people NOT the guns. Some folks are just NOT responsible human beings. The lack of knowing or caring the differences between right and wrong is the problem.

Alan, You're right, these people are imbeciles. And under our present gun laws, they would be able to purchase weapons. Think about how much more fun that brawl would have been if half a dozen of those in attendence had pulled guns and started blasting away. There is a reason we want better background checks and mental health screening.
