College student accused of sexually abusing, kidnapping wife

West Goshen Township Police

Lirim Rufati, 24, was arrested after police said he physically and sexually abused his wife over a year and then kidnapped her in an attempt to force her to leave the country.

A Pennsylvania college student was arrested after police said he physically and sexually abused his wife for a year and then kidnapped her in an attempt to force her to leave the country.

Police said the investigation began after the victim’s friend called 911 and claimed Lirim Rufati, 24, of West Chester, had kidnapped his wife and taken her to JFK airport in New York.

The caller claimed the woman was being forced to leave the country against her will by her husband and father-in-law.

Police said she was found by a Port Authority police officer as she was about to be placed on a flight to the Republic of Macedonia.

Investigators said the woman is a Macedonian citizen who married Rufati, an American, through an arranged marriage in Macedonia.

The woman told Port Authority police in customs she did not want to leave the United States.

She also told West Goshen detectives that Rufati took her from her apartment in West Goshen, drove her to New York and ordered her to board the plane to Macedonia as "punishment."

Police said that the woman accused Rufati of physically and sexually abusing her over a period of roughly one year while the two lived together in West Goshen.

Rufati was arrested and charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, rape, simple assault and other offenses.

He was arraigned with bail set at $250,000 cash. He was transported to Chester County Prison after failing to post bail.

Police also said Rufati is a student at West Chester University.

Arranged marriages in todays society are for A-Holes that nobody in their right mind would marry. I hope she finds somebody here that treats her with respect. Lock this guy up with some real prison men and he will learn "manners" on his knees........

If you 'hook up' with a Muslim or a middle easterner expect this kind of treatment. Women have less value to them than livestock.

Wake up ladies, this isn't the first case of this kind of nonsense taking place.

It's a shame how some women get brainwashed to continue being loyal to an abusive husband.

You know, like the ones that are physically abused, beaten and raped yet, they seem to come back after the husband "promises" to never do it again. Probably because the husband brings home the check. I dunno...

I'll bet my paycheck that the Father in-law also sexually abused her and maybe this is why he also wanted her out of the country.

They have the husband but after they question her further, we'll be reading about the husbands father also going to jail. They're both a POS man...

On another note:

Yeah, I caught onto that one. LOL

It's a shame how some women get brainwashed to continue being loyal to an abusive husband.

I asked a very intelligent, charming lady friend of mine the same question once - she had had no reason to stay with an abusive husband, and yet she did. She just said "There's no explanation. It made no sense, but I did."

I would guess that it might because women tend to be givers and they are willing to take pain and abuse for themselves if it still means a secure home for their children. I don't really know, though.

Byron and Creek - my guess?

believing it's better than being alone

believing that the next man you find will be just as awful or maybe worse

    believing that you deserve it

or you're just as rotten and abusive and horrible as your husband

and then, I think there are those who delusionally believe this abusive awful man just needs a woman to fix him, and they'll die trying.

I have a friend who married her husband because every boyfriend she had kept getting progressively worse, and she figured she would marry this one because the next would be worse. As you can imagine their marriage isnt just awful for them, it's awful for all their friends...but what can we do? I have not witnessed any physical abuse, but mental - absolutely. he's a spoiled little brat in a grown mans body, who throws temper tantrums at weddings and work parties, and flips out on her friends for no reason, and sometimes is a pretty fun guy - bipolar indeed! and she's slowly disappearing from us...not physically, but emotionally. it's terrifyiing to watch, but none of us want to chase her away by telling her that her husband is slowly killing the woman we always loved, from the inside out.

Someone has to say something before one of them ends of dead. Years ago a temporary employee confide in me that her husband beat her. She said he would come in from work and punch and hit her until he got tired and usually fall asleep afterwards. He was always sorry and of course promise not to do it again. She said she felt like killing him in his sleep, but was so afraid he would wake and beat her worst. She said his mother abused his father so she couldn't tell them and she did not have any family. I encouraged her to leave and go to a shelters but she didn't want to put her children in a shelter. I said if you do not do something the cycle will continue to repeat itself and she may kill her husband or he may kill her and her children will end up in a shelter anyway. I advised her to leave for own her safety and that of her children. She did not return to work the next day and I never saw anything on the news so I do not know what happened, but I hope she made the right choice.

TraceyS - "tired-of-it" didn't say Macedonia was muslim. The woman was from there, and they married there.

They implied Lirim Rufati was muslim even though he is listed as American. People, please read with comprehension before you try to bust someone's balls.

You need to read the article again and comprehend, before you act a fool and name call. I believe your own personal bias is not comprehension or even understanding of this article. Many religions and societies still have arranged marriages. Either way, who cares what his religion is if he was abusing his wife. If you are trying to imply he is Muslim and that is why he abused his wife, get over yourself. Many a Christian cop, business man, etc.... has abused his wife or women. If you are going to call Tracy out for challenging stupidity, be accurate not ignorant!

If men (and women) were either all bad or all good, our choices would be easy. Some people tend to look at the good qualities and ignore the bad. In the specific case of this article, I wonder if she stayed out of fear and threats. Thank goodness for her friend!

His wife is not his property, unlike Macedonia

Perhaps you might want to learn a little about other countries before spouting ignorance. Wives are not viewed as "property" in Macedonia. Yes, there are some women's rights issues (but there are in the US too!).

In fact, according to the Social Institutes and Gender rankings, Macedonia was fifth out of 86 countries in women's rights and had taken huge leap forward since the rankings started in 2009.

Macedonia’s Family Law explicitly provides for equality between men and women within marriage and family relations.[8] The Family Code states that parental authority and the custody of children are to be shared by the mother and father, who have the same rights and responsibilities.[9] In practice, women remain primarily responsible for running the home and raising children.[10] Women in Macedonia, FYR, have the same rights as men to pass Macedonian citizenship onto their children.

                http://genderindex.org/ranking

That doesn't make the guy any less a jerk, but let's not put down other countries just because of ignorance.

This is a GUY thing fueled by religion. It doesn't matter if it's christian, muslim or whatever women are viewed as PROPERTY and are supposed to bow down to men and do whatever they want.

Deuteronomy 21:10-13 describes how a soldier can force a woman captive to marry him without regard for her wishes.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 requires that a virgin woman who has been raped must marry her attacker, no matter what her feelings are towards the rapist. (Now you know where Akin and Mourdock got their belief about rape.)

Deuteronomy 24:1 describes the procedure for obtaining a divorce. This can only be initiated by the husband, not by the wife

Deuteronomy 25:5-10: states that if a woman is widowed, she would be required to marry her former brother-in-law.

Exodus 21:2-4: A slaveowner was permitted to give a woman to his male slave as a wife. There is no indication that women were consulted during this type of transaction. After serving six years, he would leave, but his wife and children would remain slaves of the slaveowner. Again, there is no indication that the woman was consulted on this arrangement.

Exodus 21:7: A father could sell his daughter as a slave. Even though a male slave is automatically given his freedom after 6 years, a female slave remained a slave forever.

Men have throughout time viewed women as PROPERTY without any rights. I just posted a few verses from the Bible but the Koran is just as bad.

Remember it wasn't until August 26, 1920 that MEN decided that women had the intelligence and right to VOTE. That was only 93 years ago and it is still a hard slog for women to be treated as equals anywhere in the world especially the US.

There are thousands of domestic abusers who are intelligent, accomplished and respected in their works lives (until the truth comes out). He's not "stupid", he just grew up learning a different (and incredibly screwed up) set of rules for managing his relationships. The propensity for violence has nothing to do with intelligence.

I'm not at all sure what his status as a college student has to do with this story at all.

It's nowhere near the Middle East...at least insofar as it's on the wrong side of both the Black and the Caspian seas.

Capt and Tracey, you two are the ones that need to repeat middle school. Macedonia borders Greece on the north. The Mediterranean Sea creates the southern border of Greece. The Mediterranean Sea creates the northwest border of the Middle East. Reno is right, Macedonia is close to the Middle East. As thepunisher said, Google maps helps, check it out. (Hopefully he was talking to you two and not reno because if he was he would need a remedial map reading class.)

Just looking at Google maps again and Capt. I must ask do you know where the Caspian Sea is? If you're going from Macedonia to the Mid East you shouldn't even come close to the Caspian Sea.

Macedonia is not a middle eastern country, nor does it border it. The discussion of whether it is 'near' the middle east is irrelevant. 'Near' is a subjective term, so arguing about it does not matter. Just because a country is 'near' another country does not make it 'like' it's neighbor. Early to mid 1950's France and Germany come to mind. It's primary religion is Orthodox Christianity. Reno, I would guess that you have no actual experience with knowing the mindset of people in that region. This man in the article is a cruel and controlling man, and he is a violent abuser. They come in all shapes and sizes, nationalities and religions. Your gross generalization is both ignorant and sad at the same time.

I am sad for the woman. I am not that knowledgeable about arranged marriages. However, the little I do know is that the woman has little or no say so about who she is "given" to. I don't believe that this is a marriage of convenience for her. Just for him. And it is most likely that she was raised in an atmosphere of being seen but not heard out of fear. This may explain how they were able to get her to the airport and through security.

If she has only been here a short while and is either not yet naturalized or a newly naturalized citizen, it would be easy for him to convince her she could not stay here without his permission.

And if she has been living with his abuse for a year it is likely she has no means of support other than him. It is difficult for independent American women to understand how even other dependent American women with low self esteem can continue in an abusive relationship rather than leave it, let alone a young woman raised in a culture where submissiveness to a male is the norm.

Although arranged marriages are technically legal in The United States, they should not be. In the broadest of terms they violate the 13th Ammendment to the Constitution, whereas human beings are considered currency in settling certain debts.

That aside, marriage, (arranged or otherwise) is an existance surrounding the philosophy of love, honor & respect. Too many people fail to understand that. This guy was doing it wrong. When a marriage falls apart, the spouses are not meant to be "punished". That is what divorce is for.

marriage is NOT the servitude of one spouse to the other. It's the mutual support of each other above all else. The woman's father is just as much to blame in this. the Muslim concept of marriage is warped, if not perverted.

                                            What would Mohammed do??

                                            Oh wait... never mind.

Many cultures have had arranged marriages for thousands of years. My father was from a christian family. He and his siblings all had arranged marriages both the boys and the girls, his older brother and sister were married to their arranged partner but when it came time for him, he simply told his parents no and married the women of his choosing. He broke the cycle for his first generation American family and community. No one in his family had a pre-arranged marriage after my father took his stand. He was raised in a large community of first and second generation Lebanese, his stand was actually an opening for all of the community of young people to break this cycle and marry whom ever they wanted.

The Republic of Macedonia, north of Greece, on the list to become a member state of the EU and part of NATO. Historic leader, King Phillip II (I believe, the second) of Macedon was father of Alexander the Great. They are traditionally members of the Orthodox Christian religion, not Islam. Not Middle East, not Arab, not MUSLIM. What is the deal here?

Women were basically owned by their fathers and then their husbands.

Let's start the story with a semi-apologetic suggestion that somehow the alleged crime isn't so great because the perpetrator was a college student. Nice job MS LSD. Keep up the good work.

Pick up a demographic study, or just look around you, Muslims are in every country. I have no idea what religion this person claims but just because the wife is from Macedonia does not mean the husband isn't a Muslim. According to the CIA World Factbook about 1/3 of Macedonians are Muslims. I believe Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world so anyone anywhere could be Muslim. That doesn't mean he is Muslim but ethnicity is no longer linked to religion and hasn't been for quite a while. China has more Christians than any other nation, from what I've heard. The US Muslim population is larger than some of the smaller countries in the Middle East. Again, I have no idea what religion he claims, or even if he claims a religion but just because the wife isn't Arabic doesn't mean she, or he, isn't Muslim.

The discussion of this man and his wife's religion has no bearing on what he did to her.Men all around the world commit these types of crimes on their wives and girlfriends and have done so for centuries. It absolutely disgusts me.

Why are these things called a arranged marriages? seriously...arranged slavery is what it really is. Quit with the P.C. crap and the fear of stepping on some Mideastern cult they call religion toes. They don't like it the really need to exercise their freedom of movement option and just LEAVE.

Sure, if by mideastern you mean European and by cult you mean Christianity.
