Freezing rain, snow spread to Northeast as South shivers

A winter storm brought snow and freezing rain into the Northeast on Wednesday, causing hazardous morning commutes and prompting school closings and delays.

The storm flooded some roadways in and around New York with heavy rains and dumped nearly a foot of snow in the Hudson Valley, NBCNewYork.com reported.

“Right now, we have light snow in New York, light snow in New Jersey, with heavier snow to the north in Worcester (Mass.), and snow coming down in Boston pretty heavy as well,” forecaster Tom Niziol said on the Weather Channel Wednesday. “Visibility is down to a quarter of a mile in Worcester and Boston right now.”

Up to six inches of snow fell from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts and Maine, while the New York City metropolitan area was glazed by sleet that turned into rain, leaving at least an inch of slush, according to AccuWeather.com.

The brief storm offered a taste of the frigid conditions in store later this week when an arctic air mass from Canada is expected to roll into New England, said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

The messy weather prompted hundreds of school closings and delayed openings in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, including 600 throughout Connecticut alone, NBCConnecticut.com reported.

It also delayed flights into and out of Boston, New York and Philadelphia, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

In Boston, flights at Logan Airport were delayed 30 to 45 minutes, according to the FAA flight delay information map. People traveling through New York’s La Guardia Airport were delayed an average of one hour and 35 minutes, and traffic destined for Philadelphia International Airport was delayed an average of 59 minutes.

The South, meantime, was being hit by an ice storm.

“Freezing rain will continue through Wednesday morning in parts of the South, mainly across the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys,” the National Weather Service said on its website.

That is what happens in January. Winter weather. Guess what...in April you get to write an article about stormy weather.

Snow in January in New England.

      Who'd have thought it possible?

What's crazy is that it didn't hit where I live first. We've been freezing cold, but only have a bit of leftover snow on the ground and clear streets.

And no snow in KS either-just cold. It looked like a great dead zone last summer. It was horrible to see the bleached white knee-high corn on either side of the highway, and big trees dropping their leaves mid-summer.

Unsettled weather is unsettling. Where I am were are having cold temps but much less snow than what was normal a few years ago. So, climate change would seem to be happening. Hey, Al Gore made a buck or two on his global warming thoughts, but it is weather change in most place globally, not necessary hot everywhere.

Freezing Rain??? Hasn't that been called Hail for a long long time? Must be a new Climate Change term....

                        Meteorology lesson:

freezing rain = it rains and freezes on contact to the ground, roads, cars, power lines

sleet = rain freezes in the air and hits the ground in little ice pellets

hail = water in a cloud (usually in summer thunderstorms) circulates within the cloud- up to freeze, down to collect more water, repeatedly. When it gets too heavy for the in-cloud winds to hold up, it falls to the ground

                          Good grief, Charlie Browneye!

Hail happens in warm weather as in way above freezing.

Freezing rain happens when, hello! it's freezing or below!

Freezing rain is more deadly then snow. Try driving on it. Plus it pulls down power lines real quick.

I'll take 2 feet of snow over half an inch of ice any day. Much easier to drive on, and if you do slip, there's plowed snow piled up on the side of the road to stop you!

The DOD uses science in every aspect. They are on board with climate change and have some of the best scientists. Personally I think it is a pity that they have to defend willfully ignorant people who only like science when its integrated into their vehicle, and physics when they take a curve on the highway.....After that is it all just voodoo? hmmm?

I'm not sure that stuff will stick to much after the first two set of circumstances - at least I hope it won't. My route to work is less than stellar on a sunny day.

Global warming discussions are truely a political agenda. The intent is to pin "Climate change" as a man caused event. After this becomes accepted. We then tax all the carbon producing Countries, Companies, and Individuals. Giving government more capital so they can be "here to help you".

There is much good scientific data to support both sides of the arguement. However, some times history is the best teacher. Climate on earth in best measured in milleniums. The largest impact to earth temps. is our Sun. BTW did you know that while earth temps were rising so were the temps on the other planets in our solar system ( must be to many SUV's out there).

The best history to look at is when has the earth been the hottest in the past? "The Little Climactic Optimum". A period of ~300 yrs. from approx. 1000AD to 1300 AD when temps averaged about 4*F higher then they are now. The ice caps in Greenland were totally gone (Vikings farmed Greenland then). People in N. Europe grew larger during this period (easier food access, less time trying not to freeze).

This warm time lasted 300 years. Even though there was only 10% of the current humans on earth. It must be obvious to all: They were all driving SUV's, Each had is own Oil refinery, and each voted Right Wing Wacko, every year.

YEA BABY!!! Bring it on. Here in NH we savor the summer warmth and tear up the highways on our two wheeled sleds. Ah but in winter we really get down to business and tear up the trails on our winter sleds. The snowier and colder the better. Once the lakes are good and frozen we have own society, camaraderie abounds that not even the nitwits in DC can destroy. It's a great place to hide from the everyday humdrum of the world. Don't get me wrong folks, before the snow melts in late winter, a week or two in the Keys, Gulf Coast or Caribbean is a definite must. For now though bring on the winter. Last but not least bring on the RAVENS, we ain't to proud to eat crow. GO PATRIOTS!!!
