Convicted murderer who asked for death electrocuted in Virginia

Updated at 9:45 p.m. ET: PORTSMOUTH, Va. - An inmate who pleaded guilty to two prison murders and threatened to continue killing until he received the death penalty was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m. on Wednesday, marking the first execution of the year in the U.S. and the first time Virginia used its electric chair in nearly three years.

Robert Charles Gleason Jr., 42, chose electrocution over lethal injection, the more commonly used method for executions in the United States. Gleason was serving life in prison for a 2007 murder when he killed his cellmate in 2009. He strangled another inmate in 2010.

The oak armchair in which Gleason was secured with leather straps on Wednesday is the same chair Virginia used for its first electrocution, which was carried out at the old Virginia State Penitentiary in 1908. The way the chair delivers the electric shocks was updated in 1991.

Gleason told AP in phone interviews that he deserved to die for what he did.

"The death part don't bother me. This has been a long time coming," he said in one of the many interviews from death row. "It's called karma."

Gleason said he requested death in order to keep a promise to a loved one that he wouldn't kill again. He said doing so would allow him to teach his children, including two young sons, what could happen if they followed in his footsteps.

"I wasn't there as a father and I'm hoping that I can do one last good thing," he said previously. "Hopefully, this is a good thing."

Gleason waived appeals and volunteered to be executed over the objections of his former court-appointed attorneys, who argued that his time spent in solitary confinement while on death row left him unable to make rational decisions.

State and federal courts rejected efforts by his attorneys to halt the execution and have Gleason ruled mentally incompetent. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said last week he would not intervene.

"Gleason has expressed no remorse for these horrific murders," McDonnell said in a statement on Friday. "He has been found competent by the appropriate courts to make all of these decisions."

Gleason was serving life in prison without parole for a 2007 murder when he admitted to using strips from bed sheets to bind and strangle fellow inmate Harvey Watson, 63, at Virginia's Wallens Ridge State Prison in May 2009.

He said he was able to tie Watson's hands without a struggle by saying it was part of an escape plan. He taunted Watson before he strangled him by pressing a urine-soaked sponge onto his face and a sock into his mouth, court records said.

Gleason told authorities he timed that murder for the second anniversary of his earlier homicide, according to court records.

Another strangulation
A year later, while awaiting sentencing, Gleason attacked another inmate in July 2010 at the super maximum-security Red Onion State Prison, court records said.

Gleason said he asked Aaron A. Cooper, 26, to try on a "religious necklace," which Gleason threaded through wire fencing that separated their individual cages in a recreation yard.

Gleason testified that he choked Cooper through the fence "till he turned purple," waited for his color to come back and then proceeded to choke Cooper to death.

As officers tried to resuscitate Cooper -- video surveillance shows had been choked on and off for nearly an hour -- Gleason told them "you're going to have to pump a lot harder than that."

The second strangulation prompted a federal wrongful death lawsuit by Cooper's mother, who accuses corrections employees of giving Gleason the chance to murder her son after Gleason told guards he would kill again.

no, the difference is that unborn children are not murdered, that doesn't make any sense (you can't kill a 'person' if they haven't been born). perhaps you meant fetuses that are aborted, which is completely different.

I am so sick of you idiots who say that "libs" will want to save him. I am liberal, but I don't want killers around! What is wrong with you people? There may be some people who think some in jail are innocent and fight for them, but that is on individuals. Stop putting all liberals in a ridiculous and inappropriate category. Liberals hate criminals as much as anybody else.

Just because many of us "liberals" care about good people in general does not mean that we are all against the death penalty for killers and vicious people. I am so sick and tired of reading these posts stating how "libs" will want to save psychos!

Do you all not comprehend the extremes? The Conservative extreme is "kill 'em all, with or without a fair trial", and the Liberal extreme is "No death penalty". Quit putting all people in one category. Most of us, Liberal and Conservative are more in the middle - not extreme either way.

Josh @ #1.1: "no, the difference is that unborn children are not murdered, that doesn't make any sense (you can't kill a 'person' if they haven't been born). Perhaps you meant fetuses that are aborted, which is completely different."

First of all, I've never been one to beat a drum about abortion pro or con. So this is not my entry into some online Right to Life rally but ...

Actually, Josh, the question of what constitutes a 'person' as far as fetuses are concerned is not really even much of a grey area. There have been "viable fetuses" born at less than 26 weeks - that's just 6 months. And there is one instance in Great Britain that I know of where a girl was born at just five months' gestation. She is now a healthy, happy mother with children of her own.

Once upon a time, a fetus at that stage was not considered a "real" human being. I'm guessing there are lots of people alive in this world today that would argue against that erroneous assumption. Even Dr. Seuss had an argument against that contention. "A person's a person, no matter how small."

The ignorance inherent in the egotistical and presumptious attitude that, just because the human being is not physically visible to you means they are not humanely viable is ... well, egotistical and presumptious. and I guess that's human nature. But that doesn't make it right. We learn more and more everyday about everything around us. And one thing I have learned is ... never deal in absolutes. as science has so often shown us, if you do that, someone somewhere down the road will prove you wrong.

I bet every conversation that is started, you manage to bring up your agenda.

The difference?

That would be that this is an article about a convicted killer choosing execution over continued killing and not about abortions.

Now scamper off to continue to troll your agenda in articles not even related to it.

You do know there is a reason people put their heads down or turn the other way when you enter a room.

Not enough manpower(Corrections staff) for one.

The ones on here chronically whining" lib this and lib that" use the term to mean anyone that doesn't agree 100% with their line of thinking. Liberals are the one that are in the majority for the death penalty, death penalty opponents are not. They are two entirely different groups.

Finally, an inmate that is advocating for something that should be done anyway. Why is our tax money setting violent criminals up for a nice 3 meal a day with rec time life when they will never be a productive member of society. Not only do they take from the community with their crimes but they continue to take with a nice comfy prison sentence that we fund.

If a prisioner that will never be allowed into the world again would rather choose death, why not?

Some people are better off dead, and the society they take glee in victimizing are better off not having to support and protect and nourish them for a lifetime after they kill. Please, I mean PLEASE, look up the Kitty Genovese case on Wiki. That man is still alive. If you think Kitty deserved that outcome, you have some serious balls to start looking for.

I am the first to agree that personal agendas should not be thrown into a discussion that is not on that topic. However; if you are going to bring abortion into this, then you need to make valid points. The majority of people who are in favor of abortion do not believe that it should be performed after pain can be perceived; and most states do not allow 2nd trimester abortions unless there is a danger to the mother or there is genetic testing or ultrasound visualization of the fetus showing malformation unless the mother's life is at stake. The suction/curettage method of emptying the uterus of the developing embryo is done before the nervous system is developed enough to register pain. I worked with another nurse who was in her fourth month of gestation and discovered to have a malignant melanoma in her eye. She had to have an enuculation of the eye followed by radiation and chemotherapy. The fetus was aborted; do you know what chemo and radiation can do to a developing fetus. Should the woman have been allowed to die to try and save the life of the fetus?

If you need source sites to verify what I have said regarding embryonic development, just google it; just don't go to any Right to Life site; they do not give accurate information on scientific facts.

I believe this person should not have been allowed to be put to death as he desreves to rot in prison and prison should be a total hell hole on earth. It is not that I think of the death penalty as being too harsh, it should only be used for people who get a life sentence for all crimes other than murder and used without delay. If you kill someone, You should kept alive to suffer in a complete hell hole. Our way of serving punishment is so screwed up.

MILLIONS of unborn children to be murdered

Yes, but the unborn children that are aborted are usually the product whoring. So, it will probably be a a good thing to abort them. Look at their parents activities, running around spreading diseases. Apples don't fall to far from the tree. Best to abort those apples falling from poison trees.

Steve didn't need to criticize liberals for their stance on the death penalty, but he did make a legitimate point about abortion. Everyone, including those who think abortion is wrong, have a right to their opinion. It is disappointing to see these comments collapsed because this means those with opposing viewpoints are intolerant of opposing opinions.

He wants to die, he promises to go on killing until he is executed, where is the logic in keeping him alive? I have to wonder about the lengths some lawyers will go to keep on bilking the system.

Look up the Kitty Genovese case and tell me that guy deserves to still be living life. Some people are better off dead, and the society whom they victimized are better off without having to pay for a lifetime of protection, food, education and legal representation. Prison life is an upgrade for many; death would be a deterrrant if judges and juries had the huevos to implement it.

I wonder how many times someone opposed to the death penalty has claimed that being in prison for life deters the criminal from further crimes? I've been told this at least a half dozen times in the past few years by people who I think are otherwise intelligent. I hope they read this story. Once dead the murderer can murder no more.

ps--For those with a poilitical angle...California is, sadly, about as liberal as a state can be, and yet in November we voted in favor of retaining the death penalty. It IS true that nearly all opposed to the death penalty are on the liberal side of things, and nearly all who support the death penalty are more conservative, but enough liberals also agreed to keep the death penalty "alive".

                        #2.11 - Wed Jan 16, 2013 11:48 PM EST

Rich here are some statistics on California and it's death penalty:

                        • 57 inmates have died from natural causes
                        • 6 inmates have died from other causes
                        • 20 inmates have committed suicide
                        • 13 have been executed in California
                        • 1 inmate (Kelvin Shelby Malone) was executed in Missouri

When over four times as many inmates of death row die of natural causes and 50% more commit suicide then are executed, something is wrong. The lawyer fees and court costs for the endless appeals are the same no matter how the inmate dies. I am all for the death penalty NORMALLY but the way the state of California does it it is more like a jobs program for appeals lawyers.
The one thing that Governor Brown could do that would have an IMMEDIATE impact on his prison budget would be to commute ALL death sentences to life without parole. That would stop all the expensive appeals.

This is a stone sociopath who has no control of his impulses. Give him what he is asking for. Who needs to feed and support "this thing" while we have so many innocent children going hungry? Take the money that would have been spent on supporting this useless individual and give it to families who are out of work and losing their homes... This is not a "liberal" or "conservative" issue. It is a "trash collection" issue...What's the debate?

Yes, that's exactly what will remedy the obsession with violence in our society. Bringing back public executions. Brilliant. How about we hang, draw, and quarter them while we're at it?

Dart, waa waa waaa, little soft panty waists like yourself is what makes criminals as bold as they are, cause they know that bleeding hearts will protect them. Maybe if our punishment of these violent crimes were responded to with extreme executions in public, some of them at least just might think twice before jumping. As the Bible says...eye for an eye...tooth for a tooth... I say Do unto them as they did to their victim!!! And there should be a time limit on all this appeal blcrp too!! Five years at max...then off with their heads.

Dart I know you were being sarcastic, but maybe we should! The punishment should be just as bad as your crime. If we punished more harshly it might just make people think twice. And if they are crazy and don't care, then get rid of the trash. This society has gotten way to soft!

The vet puts down a mad/vicious dog. It's a simple process of a lethal injection. It does not torture, it simply ends the animal's life. At the very least, this should be our process. I do agree, however, that it should not be a "hidden" act. We have lost respect for the value of life. Folks need to know what death is. It's a permanent solution, no instant reincarnations come with the push of a button.

Think a moment about how many underprivileged children could be given a college education with the dollars wasted on maintaining sociopaths like Gleason in prison and in court costs incurred in defending appeals brought by self seeking lawyers out to enhance their reputations.

I'm still thinking about a killer in a yard choking a guy for an hour before the guards notice. Maybe they were too busy dealing contraband to be able to watch the yard. No all people have the genetic make up to allow morality or a sense of right and wrong to enter their heads. As a kid some torture little animals to watch the fear, pain and suffering. No thoughts of empathy ever occur to them. IT's not like they have empathy but ignore it, they don't have it. So they torture and kill. IT is possible these people are like animals more than they are like humans. Executing them is a moral solution. As this guy proved, letting them live in prison means they just kill a prisoner for no reason other than they can. IT is not justice to give them 15 years of appeals before executing them. Such executions should come less than 2 years after conviction. One or two appeals in that time should be all there is.

I think we should bring back capital punishment when cases are 100% on the guilt. This I think will help bring down the crime stats. Too many say they can to the crime because they can do the time. There are no consequences to their actions. In prison they have no bills to pay they get more education on how to be even meaner when they get out. Execute the guilty and may God have mercy on their souls.

Phil, that's exactly the point. criminals aren't too bright and they don't reason very well.. they don't consider the consequences of their actions and hence the death penalty has no effect on them.

The death penalty might not have any effect on the condemned, but it sure as hell is the best way to be assured they won't (and can't) kill again. Furthermore, it will have one hell of an effect on what would most likely be their future victims, if they are allowed to live.

Her murdering husband got sentenced to 2 murders... his wife and his 'unborn' fetus. Murder of a life, is murder. Period. Regardless of if can 'survive on it's own', as you put it. What about folks living their lives on an iron lung machine? Because they can't 'survive on their own' and someone kills them, it's not murder either?

Fitzme, You know what amazes me?? You Tea party types are the most lop-sided- contradictive type people on the face of the planet. Let me explain how.

First off, if there murders in Chicago, you blame Obama, do all that kool-aid,ignorant gang, welfair racist talking BS and are in full swing with dogging a man, instead of focusing on a solution. ( Thats why Romney lost)

When there mass killing is hmm lets say places like Denver. Here come the excuses lol umm he was just sick in the head bla bla bla and we here crickets.

lol and what about this Obama\hitler Avatar??? I'm confused, wasn't hitler a racist evil man that focused on seperation and only cared about his blood and his kind?? Isn't that more like the neo-nazi kkk, or those moonshine drinking rednecks that will never vote for a man simply because of his color, or a woman simply because of her gender?? Doesn't that sound more like the tea party?? ( Another reason Romney lost)

See (Fitzme) The reason why your types will always have problems, is because your upbringing, peers, and people your surrounded by would have no problem is things went back to the 1950's. ( Most Tea-party Morons)

When you brainwashed people wake up and realize its One country One People, instead of promoting all this seperation and hate, then you might truley understand why your party is crumbling and you are in a no win situation. Its 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Either roll with the program or get rolled over, good day lmao hahahahahahah

Capital punishment is not a deterrent. If you look at states with it you see no less violent crime. Point in case, Phoenix Az. has Americas toughest sheriff and has the 4th highest crime rate for large metro areas. This creep wanted to be put down so he wouldn't have to sit in prison. He is certainly deserving, and got his wish, but is it really more punishment than sitting for the rest of his days? If they want capital punishment to be effective, then it should be carried out in the minutes after conviction, not years or decades.

In a system set up so justice is supposed to guarantee to be given to victims and society is assured those found guilty will be punished, at least in this case, the guilty can be guaranteed to pay for their crimes.

There have been many questions DNA has brought to those waiting on death row. While those opposed to the use of the death penalty continue to argue against its use. Yet in this case at least,I believe, this convicted murder of multiple deaths, while even those who were killed might be deemed worthy of death by some, has the right to choose for himself his fate.

If we strip individuals from having that choice, because we don't like what they have chosen, and force upon them our views and belief systems, when they are of sound mind, I believe we would be guilty of a worse offense. For we would be stripping them of freedoms and rights, which came at the cost of countless precious good lives.

Criminals do not expect to get caught, so they don't worry about the consequences of their actions. They don't expect that there will be any consequences. So there is no penalty, life or death, that will ever deter crime. That is a fallacy. Deterrents work only on those who wouldn't have been especially likely to commit a crime in the first place. Deterrents work best on those people who are, by nature or nurture, not really criminal. A man chooses not to kill his wife, but divorces her instead. He thinks about all of the ramifications of murder and decides he really doesn't want to deal with those ramifications. But he is essentially sane. He is capable of thinking in terms of the future. He doesn't want to go to jail. He doesn't want to be tried for murder. You prevent the people from murdering by having consequences only if they are the kind of people who are capable of rational thought. A typical criminal isn't really rational. If he were rational, he would not be a criminal.

Comparing the death of this sociopath to the death of a dog is disrespectful to the noble C. Familiaris. Without the love and companionship of my Doberman, I would not have survived a long and painful illness. When she developed lymphoma at the age of thirteen, I returned the favor and took her for chemo for an entire summer. When she died at fourteen, it was in my arms. I still feel her absence seven years later.....My girl was an asset to her species and made this world a better place....The miscreant who wants to be executed is a disgrace to my species...There is no comparison...

they leave us far to soon

I worked death row for two years and got to know the men housed there. To a man there was two things that were constant: #1 They never believed that they would get caught. #2 they never believed that they would receive the death sentence. Several of the men had insisted on the death penalty because they didn't want to remain in prison into their dottage. Others tired over the routine of death row life and committed suicide by either waiving all of their appeals or by killing themselves.

Say what you will about it being deterent there is one fact that stands out: Those executed will never kill again.

IF he really wants to die, then give him what he wants. He has a history of suicide attempts, alcohol/drug abuse, mental illness, and now several murders. He's miserable and is making others miserable by continuing to murder. Even those with mental illness can't stand dealing with it on a daily basis. If he were living in the free world, perhaps he would off himself?

Putting him out of his misery...is the best option here.

If the State is going to kill someone they should allow him/her to pick the method of execution. Hanging, lethal injection, pulling the pin on a hand grenade, firing squad, so forth. Also why not allow the oral ingestion of a lethal fast acting poison?

At least the two posters above you managed to express their thoughts without sliding into denigrating anyone, nor did they have to use expletives to express themselves. Guess that puts you in the EPIC FAIL category.

I don't think it is the wrong time, in fact its the perfect time. Tell me when is the right time to discuss murderers if not in a article about murder??? Guns didn't murder, people did! In fact, holy heck! This guy managed to kill without using a gun.... crazy!!! Guns must have told him to do it!

Um.. Hey Buck. Do you know what a hypocrite is? Someone who bashes on someone for "denigrating" someone immediately after um.. denigrating someone? lol BTW- Cool is also a temperature. Look at a dictionary. Maybe I'm an HVAC kind of person.

Know what rhymes with Buck, Buck? Duck. Anyway, mooooooving on.

And Shaneal (lovely pic btw).. both of you. Gather round. Let's talk. See, this article isn't about guns. I know, I know... you people (yeah, I said you people) take away the credibility of your argument when you post stupid posts regarding gun control on an article about a man who, as Shaneal pointed out, killed without a gun. So, no Shaneal not all articles about murderers give way for your tired posts about gun control.

Now, before you all go calling me a liberal or anything weird like that. Let me point out to you that I am a collector of weapons, and have some guns. I also support the death penalty. I also think that people need to be somewhat responsible for their lot in life and not work the system for handouts as a career option. But, I also am fine with women having the ability to govern their own bodies and don't give a crap if gay people get married and miserable like straight people. I'm kinda moderate, and open minded, and I listen to ideas. 'Cept they just don't fit in to the context about a guy who wants his death penalty already.

So, keep looking like a bunch of single minded lunatics, I don't care. But I'm going to tell you about yourself.

So in closing, I'd like to say.

@!$%# & @!$%#, Dammity Hell Boob. Who'da thunk that a tough motorcycle dude would get all vaginal about "expletives".

Shaneal, you get a thumbs up. I like a woman who can think independently and not follow the crowd. You have a certain Je ne sais quoi.

Sometime when you have the time google Plato's "Allegory of the Cave." It is a classic commentary on the human condition showing how true reality is not always what it seems to be on the surface. It is about open-mindedness and the power of possibility.

I think you will relate, and undoubtedly see some parallel's that apply to many of the viner's.

You know I collect guns to. And from what I have read it doesn't seem like a bad idea to tighten the laws a bit. Where I live I am surrounded by peopel waiving their guns around screaming about their rights. To me it just seems like people want something to fight about. I think some tighter laws are a good thing and if you are to lazy to jump through those hoops to be a responsible gun owner then you don't need guns.

And thank you for the compliment on my picture ;)

Why is it that so many people want to assume the role of God and consign people to hell? Okay, this guy was one of the bad guys. But since you don't know his life story, the reasons he turned out to be what he was, you don't get to make the judgment about his afterlife. That decision belongs only to God.

I happen to believe that we have a system of laws that we apply as fairly as we possibly can. That is the only authority we have. The condition of a man's soul is on God. Since God created that soul, he will see to it's disposition.

I suspect that a lot of people are going to be very surprised by what happens to their souls after death. Some of the most holy of holy rollers are also some of the most corrupt. They may not necessarily win the rewards they expect.

I think the modifications were to convert the activation system for the chair to use a two key system, with a random number generator attached to it so that the two guards who turn the keys never know who actually caused it to activate. Similar to the one blank bullet in a firing squad.

                                                        Enjoy hell, you sick f*ck.

His wish should be their command. If he wasn't mentally ill when he went in solitary confinement will make it so.I am a death penalty advocate but I do not believe that people should be put in tiny cells.A lot of prisoners lose their minds by being locked up 23 hours a day in a small cell and when they are let back out in society commit more crimes which usually end in murdering another person.Long periods of incarceration is not the solution to reducing crimes such as car thefts, robbery's,burglaries, rapes, child molestation's,kidnapping and murder. Those crimes should all warrant the death penalty. That solution would put a dent in crime.

That was the comment that was "collapsed by the community"? Uncle I don't always agree with you, but THAT is the comment they collapse? I don't know where this community is, but I hope there is a big warning sign so the rest of us can avoid it.

Uncle's comment "Obama leg humpers" was figurative, not literal, I hope everyone knows. Otherwise the president wouldn't get anything else done. Come on people, collapse your big puffed up egos and come up with coherent points to counter arguments. Unc used no profanity, used no threat, used no religious or ethnic insult. He merely painted a picture of the level of drooling blind adherence and obedience the average Obama supporter displays. Come on, community, come play with the grownups and stop lashing out if you can't think of anything intelligent to say.
