Seven students sickened after Mace sprayed at Chicago school

Seven Chicago Public Schools students were taken to the hospital early Wednesday after someone reportedly sprayed Mace in the school cafeteria.

Ambulances were sent to Beasley Magnet Academic Center on the 5200 block of South State Street around 9:20 a.m. local time.

Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Marielle Sainvilus said the students were sprayed with "an unidentified liquid by a fellow student" and transported as a precautionary measure.

Sainvilus said parents of the affected students were notified and a letter and robocalls went out to all parents. She said it's not clear what was contained in the liquid, but reports at the school said it was believed to be Mace.

"We thank the principal and the Beasley elementary school staff for taking quick and appropriate action to contain this incident and to get the school operating back to normal," Sainvilus said.

I demand that the government immediately ban this product or use the remainder on Joe Biden. Preferably the latter.

I miss Chicago. Just stay away from the bad spots. If you've lived there, it's pretty easy to tell which streets you should never turn down. But the city is fantastic! Clean, beautiful, plenty to do, wonderful art all around.

Isn't it sad that that is a good thing? It used to be this would be a big thing, now it is barely a blip. I miss the days when a food fight was the talk of the town.

    Kim,

I don't know if we have clashed before in our comments but I would give you 100 additional votes if I could.

When I posted my little comment up there, I left the thread and went back trying to recall it because I felt it might be too flippant for the feelings of others but I couldn't get it back, so there it is... and you are so right. It's sad beyond measure that it's a good thing.

Peace, and may you always walk in harmony with your Spirit.

screminmimi, no we have never clashed before which I think is a good thing. No doubt some on here will indeed think your comment too flippant but hopefully they will stop and think themselves before typing an emotion filled response.

    Peace to you also.

The mayor will be calling a news conference and discussing his plan to band mace in public and requiring all residents, who own mace, to register it with the city for annual cost of 25.00 per year. It is not about the money it is public safety.

Why don't you think about 20 1st graders riddled with semi-automatic bullets and see if you feel good about your gun position. Ban automatic weapons and large capacity magazines.

would it be better 20 1st graders and a bomb. like we listen to on the news all the time. it very well might have been if somebody wanted to. just think if they can't do it any other way then why cant they make their own bomb. bomb materials are highly restricted but they sill do it somehow.

Well it certainly couldn't come down to 7 thugs getting PEPPER SPRAYED, by one person who felt threatened now could it? that story after all wouldn't live up to the lib medias induced hysteria agenda now would it.

Most Mace is pepper spray these days, but there is a formulation which contains the original tear gas/hydrocarbon solvent base plus capsicum and a dye which is brilliantly florescent under ultraviolet light.

Those are sold as "Triple Action" models, and they're best sellers- especially with police departments.

If used in a confined area, defense sprays can cause breathing problems in addition to simple irritation.

If you have asthma or you're already congested for some other reason, they can kill you- so it's no joke.

Still...nobody died, and no one suffered permanent disabilities.

This story has sparse information regarding how this transpired; it could have been a case of legitimate self defense, it could have been an assault motivated by nothing more than malice, or it could have been simple stupidity.

The contrast between this incident and one involving a firearm remains inescapably obvious.

In Chicago but at least it was not a gun. Just a school prank that could have been bad but it was not.

if you can use it on the street to protect yourself the you should be anywhere you are threatened with bodily harm. good use it in the schools on bully's and molesters. better than guns. Mace should put them in their place and by not knowing if they will get hit with mace when they pull their crap. it wears of and it doesn't hurt anybody. shooting them will.
