'Compassionate priest' indicted in crystal meth case

A priest is among five people indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, the U.S. Attorney's office said Wednesday.

Monsignor Kevin Wallin, who resigned as pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Bridgeport, Conn., in June 2011, was arrested Jan. 3. He was charged with six counts of possession with intent to distribute crystal meth.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office, Wallin is accused of receiving shipments of crystal meth from a California distributor and selling it to an undercover officer six times between September 2012 and January 2013.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million.

According to the Diocese of Bridgeport, Wallin, 61, resigned from his post after nine years, telling parishioners "that he was struggling with a number of health and personal issues" and he was granted a sabbatical.

"During his sabbatical, the diocese became concerned about Msgr. Wallin's wellbeing and have continued to reach out to him," the diocese said in a statement. "To date, he has not spoken directly with diocesan officials."

More news from NBCConnecticut.com

The statement described Wallin as "a gifted, accomplished and compassionate priest," adding that his arrest comes with "a sense of shock and concern."

Kenneth Devries, a 52-year-old from Waterbury, Conn.; Michael Neslon, 40, from Manchester, Conn.; Chad McCluskey, 43, from San Clemente, Calif.; and Kristen Laschober, 47, from Laguna Niguel, Calif., were also arrested in connection to the alleged drug ring.

^ My son, god is "in all of us" so he controls us to do everything we do. But we are also responsible for our actions and going to hell for them all anyways, so I guess he figured he might as well... I mean the Lord supposedly causes us to do these things, but it's our fault not his. That and I heard Jesus is into that crystal meth stuff now...

@ Creek Dog

I was thinking the very same thing!! There seems to be to much inconsistency in our judicial system! Much of it stems from liberal judges that abuse discretion and prosecutors who want a notch in the win column even if it means cutting a deal for a lessor crime!!

You are absolutely right CreekDog a kid getting busted with 5 x pills can get more time than that professor who murdered his wife. This country cares more about controlling your mind than if you kill someone. That professor beat his wife's head in and he gets five years but yet our prisons are overflowing with non violent drug offenders often doing more time than most murderers just plain sick. Our Government is treasonous and a traitor to us all!

Creek Dog - perhaps the fact that we have FOR PROFIT PRISONS and the owners of these prisons spend lots of their money lobbying our judicial system to set the terms for crimes.

It's not secret they've pushed long and hard to get drug sentences uped so they make more money.

Ultimately we the tax payers are paying to warehouse these "criminals"...we're just too stupid to wake up and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE (so to speak) to ensure the the worst of the worst sit in the prisons for the longest, and the other ones - the non-violent crimes, like selling drugs (or buying and consuming) dont end up taking up all the spaces in our warehouses, er i mean prisons.

So, if you operated a prison for profit - which would you rather have filling your shelves, i mean cells - KILLERS, RAPISTS, CHILD MOLESTORS...or Drug Dealers and Users?

Think about which one you can profit off of even after the "criminals" are incarcerated, since we know drugs still get pushed in prison.

Creek Dog,

While I understand your sentiment, it's also important to remember that laws vary from state to state. A 2nd Degree Murder conviction in Maryland can very easily carry a different penalty from a 2nd Degree Murder conviction in Tennessee. Sad to say, but it's true.

The puppet masters have propagandized a very successful "freedom and justice for all" myth to the American public.

Freedom to those who harm others (O.J., Wall Street, BP, etc.) to the elite and those who can afford top notch counsel; incarceration to those who harm themselves (drugs, prostitution, etc.)

If true, it means he also created it.

Creating man's capacity for love, kindness and compassion is loving and good.

Creating free will with the possibility to do evil is sadistic.

And then in come the lawyers. Ka-ching! And then the "victims" get their money and blow it on crystal meth. Nice cycle.

And yes, as a survivor (I will not call myself a victim) of priest abuse, I know that it works this way for most cases. I did not take the money offered - I told them what I wanted was a personal apology from the bishop (the priest refused to apologize to any of us) and a public acknowledgement of wrong doing. I got both, and more - Pope Benedict defrocked my abuser in 2005 (the state could not prosecute due to statutes of limitation). He can no longer function as a Catholic priest.

I saw a couple of others hurt by my abuser. One ended up dead on the streets overdosed, and another took his money into a failed business and is now drinking what's left away. Are they at peace? So much for the money.

"Survivor" is the accurate term for who you are. I'm so sorry that you and others had your innocence taken. I think there can be no greater sin against humanity and you have figured out a way to go on and speak your truth. I am no longer a practicing Catholic because of things that happened to you and others. I refuse to give money or blind loyalty to anyone and honor the gift of the conscience God gave me. I'm glad you did the same. If everyone did, the world would be a better, safer place for all.

What you and these others lived through is very sad. Just please don't confuse what these priests teach as Biblical Christianity and please understand that Jesus wept over such things. If God knows all then He also knew your pain just the same as you did. So some will want to say in response to this, at this point, then where was your God when all this happened? Keep in mind - God intervenes always through His Spirit to call people to repentance and to Himself - but they mean why didn't He stop it? Well because on the day God uses force - it will be Judgment Day and He is slow in bringing this about not wanting any to be damned but that all would come to repentance- ... If He were to tear open the sky (so to speak) and bring justice today- all those who will not repent until tomorrow are doomed. So God delays - but He will not delay forever.

So, again, what you went through is so very sad; but Jesus truly knows your pain and offers healing. Find a real Church - one that teaches the Bible, is Spirit led, focuses on Jesus and is full of love. Avoid the counterfeits that the Lord and the Bible told us would be out there - and look for Jesus Himself, himself.

Thomas, that is a totally ridiculous statement. The Catholic Church DOES teach the Bible. In fact, if I attend Mass every day, I will hear the whole Bible read in three years. And yes, I am sure that Jesus is upset that so many of His followers were led astray during the reformation. The Holy Spirit does NOT want God's people to be confused and certainly does NOT inspire almost 40,000 different Christian sects with different teachings. The Catholic Church IS guided by the Holy Spirit and thank God, has over a billion people world-wide that follows His Church. Out of curiousity, Thomas, how many people follow your sect? Who are the counterfeits?

To Tom and Linda, if this were 2000 years ago, I'd be a Gnostic. They had it right. You can communicate with God directly, and don't need a pirest or bishop to intervene. That sect was slaughtered by the Church immediately, can't have dissenters. The Council of Nicea finished off any other free thinking allowed. Have a nice day, and say 'Hey' to the flying spaghetti monster for me. BTW, I WAS a Catholic, so I do know of what I speak.

          Come on Eileen.

            #2.9 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:58 PM EST

Linda - I attended masses for years - the Bible would be read and the priest would go on and talk about things that had nothing to do with the quick little snippet that was read - and when he did interpret it it never was what the passage meant. And there is a great deal of division in the Roman Catholic sect for that matter - it is just a repeated doctrine that there is not. Finally the Church invisible is united - may I suggest reading the Gospel of John, Luke and Acts followed by the Book of Romans and Galatians -if you read those books reflectively you will begin to see that the RC tradition has nothing to do with the theology taught in Scripture. It is Roman mystery religion with Christian themes.

Eileen - you may know something of the RC because your indictments are of the Imperial Church- but gnosticism is not the answer - their source texts are hundreds of years after the events and false - long before the Imperial Christianity's Council of Nicea. The Apostle John wrote against this often in his writings for one.

But enough of back n forth - what is truly amazing is that there is a mountain of evidence for Jesus and the resurrection and therefore a mountain of evidence for the God of the Bible being real. He is 'not far' from those who earnestly seek Him for 'in Him we live and move and have our being.'

              #2.10 - Tue Jan 22, 2013 12:57 PM EST

Thomas, you’re contradicting yourself. Per the bible, we should hold on to our tradition. What is God's church? “I will be with my church till the end of time.” If you are an ex-Catholic, you know the answer to this. Catholic simply means universal. The teachings of Christ by the disciples we all one and the same, they were not different nor did they contradict each other. Hence the Catholic name. After our Lord ascended into heaven, his church the Catholic Church was the only Christian faith. Either you were Jewish, Pagan, agnostic or Catholic (Christian). There were no Baptist, Lutherans, and Mormons etc.... not until their protestant figures emerged to start such secs, and mind you they were created because they did not agree with the Catholic Church. Even Jesus warned of this, "There are many sheep that are not of my fold." The wolves in sheep’s clothing are other people’s beliefs that direct you away from God by convincing you those certain aspects of this or that are better than the truth. Martin Luther the first protestant said he hated God, married a man to two wives and even married a nun. This was an ex-priest, whom the church even tried to listen to, to make sure he wasn't correct. Of course he wasn't nor was he stopped and was able to spread his lies, thanks to the printing press. He took out seven books of the bible because they contradicted his teachings and his biggest contradiction was confession. However, again he was incorrect.

Jesus, God-Man listened and forgave sins. He instructed the disciples to forgive sins. Yes, I would like very much to kneel down and to tell my sins to only God but that is not what Jesus did nor asked, in John; "As the father has sent me, I send you and whose sins you shall hear you shall forgive, whose sins are retained will be retained." He didn't say kneel down and confess? Jesus takes this even further with Peter. Peter was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven and again with the instructions to forgive sins, Peter was given the power to set the laws that would be bound both for earth and for heaven. "What you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven and what you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Peter was given this power and no one else. "Feed my sheep."

I have read the bible and it tells me also there are things that are not in the bible we need. Baptism, you can read about it but you can't get it from the bible only the teaching. Confession, communion... The teachings of the church should not contradict the teachings of the bible they must align in harmony. Protestant, protest this and do contradict what they teach to what is written. I'm not saying Protestants will go to hell, in fact I can't say who will and who won’t. I won’t even say where I’m going. All I can say with certainty is that God is merciful. The Catholic Church is currently split between modernist and Traditionalist. The evils of the church have been brought on by the modernist movement. Yes, there are priest who have abused their power but far more in the short span of the modernist movement than the entire tradition of Catholicism. I personally feel that in today’s society some Protestants are more catholic than the Vatican II or modernist catholic. The traditionalists are the only ones holding on to Catholicism.

Um, can you point out anything in the article that suggests the perp priest was gay? Further, where do any of the 10 Commandments mention anything about homosexuality?

It says in the Bible you can have all of gods plants and fruit.

You really should read more = look up the ingredients for manufacturing meth. I'm pretty certain caustic cleaners, etc., are not grown on a farm somewhere.

The issue of whether or not this priest should be held more accountable through church discipline is moot; getting him and the drugs off the street is the bigger issue.

What is YOUR source? You must have a real hate for Catholics.

How about people frm CT? They seem to be having a lot of problems lately. You form CT?

Speaking of the Bible, seems you need to check out the part about "bearing false witness".

Hey, Kaddidlecrapper - opps, sorry, "hopper" - you quote the Bible, blah blah blah, call the Catholic Church "strange" for "ignoring it", and then proceed in comment after comment to gleefully and self righteously judge and bash an entire group based on the actions of a few. Pomposity and a lack of charity are also mentioned in the Bible. Dope. (And no, I'm not a Catholic.)

Ellie from Logansport - The percentage of priests who are pedophiles is less than half of 1%.

The problem isn't that some priests rape kids, the problem is that the Catholic hierarchy conspired to cover up those horrible crimes and enable those priests to rape even more kids.......and then they've fought lawsuits from the victims every step of the way.

Nothing worse than a hate filled man with opinions, who makes assumptions about other people, who defends dopes just like him, and who can't spell. Wasn't his salary and perks adequate? If he was committed to such a life, why did he need more funds, and why did he need drugs? Seems he may not have been truly committed, but wanted a life of ease with a steady income and perks. Various studies have confirmed that addictions such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco are in reality a substitute for an ample and satisfying sex life. How could this clown have given counsel to those in need when he was so misguided? Did the mon-junior step in and replace him? When does he get promoted to monsignor?

Let me use the same method used by MSNBC to "prove" leftist points about the South, Midwest, and other "bsckward" regions, only in reverse: It's the logical outcome in states governed by whacked-out leftwing liberal Democrats and others who believe that "anything goes".

Is that a really stupid statement? Sure it is, but no more so that suggesting that James Byrd, Jr. was dragged to death by a racist idiot in Texas because GWB was governor at the time.

This priest was doing this not because of the place he lived but because deep down he was a really bad guy who had to have been motivated by greed and the knowledge that his position put him largely above suspicion by many. I have no idea whether or not he was a pedophile, but the priests who were such were also bad guys. The church needs to stop defending such. I am certain that they say that they disapprove not of the man but rather his actions. Since we are defined as human beings by our actions, this seems pretty shallow to me. The logical extreme of this viewpoint would suggest that we should "love" Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin, but just hate their actions. Well, sorry, but my opinion of them is based on their actions. Same with this guy. They should quit covering for him and other miscreants, and let them face the same consequences as other criminals. Letting crooks hide behind their "ministry" is heinous!

Yes, there is no proof, but the man probably was an addict, and sought out drug dealers to supply him for resale. He thought his job cover was perfect, but it failed!

Check it out! Most dealers and sellers use the stuff themselves. That is one way you get into the business. Just show me ONE dealer or seller who does NOT use the stuff!

                                #10.4 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 7:54 AM EST

The point is that if someone can sell ice to an Eskimo (who would have zero need to buy ice) then he's a really great salesman (only the best salesperson could get somebody to buy something they don't have need for). glen was just saying that if somebody talked a priest into selling drugs for them, they must have made quite the sales pitch. We don't really know how he got into this from the article-maybe someone approached him, maybe he started using and then got into dealing himself, maybe he never used, but saw an opportunity to make money and pushed his way in.

It's so sickening to read the Comments on here from people who know nothing about the Catholic Church as far as it's teachings or history or the huge amount of work they do in the world. What has this one man got to do with the Church? Do you not know there are alcoholic and drug addicted people in every part of society? It said he left his Parish because he had problems; way before any of this drug selling stuff came out. We don't know what his motivation was AT ALL. Get off your fricking high horses! What a bunch of hypocrites....like you know something the rest of us don't.

Yes, when the Church helps them cover up their crimes and reassigns them to new places as it did with the pedophiles, that does reflect on the Church greatly, as it says that avoiding the appearance of evil is far more important that addressing and arresting it is.

We have bad teachers in society. Do you therefor avoid learning new things? We have bad politicians in society. Do you therefor not vote? We have bad cops in society. Do you therefor disregard all laws? We have bad parents in society. Do you therefor dislike all children? Hypocrites or people with weaknesses and shortcomings can be found in all places, but judging an entire group based on their existence is silly beyond belief. The goal is to TRY - but sometimes people fail. Doesn't mean the context is bad.

I don't attend the Catholic Church or any church anymore for the same reason. However, I remain actively spiritual through prayer, theological discussion groups, and reading the Bible and other inspirational materials. Tending to your spirituality does not have to involve putting your money in the collection basket of a corrupt institution and following along blindly without critical questioning. It's time for humans to evolve and take personal responsibility for their spiritual lives first and foremost.

Definitely! I would never have thought someone that old would have ended up involved in something like this. Many priests, from loneliness and lack of support, have had drinking problems over the years, but drugs like this always seemed to be an issue with the young. It's too bad because it seems like he had a lot going for him, and I'm sure that everyone in his parish is really disappointed.

the petition is to have the federal government to enforce its own bans on marijuana and illegal immigration.

please go there and sign it.

True Bob, that was a bit harsh, but he deserves no less than the hate he spews forth.

The world would be just that much nicer without him. I retract my previous last sentence.

tj --- "at least one so far...selling drugs." ~~~~~~~~~~ Although I think it probable that this priest was not the ONLY priest in history to sell drugs, YOU have hit on an interesting idea. I don't know how many Catholic Priests there are in the world, but I know it is many many thousands. If there are only ONE (or maybe, a FEW more) among many thousands, then the record is pretty small. Sure, it should be zero, but one or even a few is not bad (except for the few, themselves). The MANY innocent priests should not be painted with the same brush. Same thing for pediophile priests!

Addiction to meth is a horrible form of addiction. It accounts for many cases of HIV infections due to it's inhibiting of the decision making center of the brain.

Put some more money on that plate, your local pedophile needs a new meth pipe.

Why not put a little extra so he can get a new Cadillac too.

If this man is a pedophile as well the kids are in for some big trouble when he gets high.

Like I've said many times, when it comes to drugs in this country, it's the upper crust, or those in high places, who are as active in the drug trade as much, if not more, than the street dealer in Chicago. Yet it's the lower crust, who get 90% of the prosecutions. I think drug use should be viewed as an illness, instead of a crime. Prison is just where they're sending sick people, who really need mental help and sent to a rehab center. If they are sentenced, make them do 4-5 years of community service, not jail.

Priests are in real trouble. They can no longer mess with Little Boys, so they turn to Meth. What do you expect, Whats a Priest to do.

This was only one priest out of thousands! I can't judge all priests on the misdeeds of one. And not all priests were involved in the sex scandal. And no, I am not Catholic.

What is surprising is that he was a priest and also age 61.
