Subscribe to RSSIn an emotional press conference, President Obama unveiled his "concrete steps" to keep kids safe, asking that Congress restore a ban on military-style assault weapons, make it easier for mental health professionals to report threats of violence and put a limit on ammunition. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
President Barack Obama has appealed to ordinary Americans to lobby members of Congress over gun control to counter the power of the pro-gun lobby.
In an opinion article written for the Connecticut Post, Obama urged people to ask their politicians “why getting an A-grade from the gun lobby is more important than giving parents some peace of mind when they drop their child off for first grade.”
On Wednesday, Obama laid out a plan to require criminal background checks on all gun sales, ban “military-style” assault weapons, limit magazines to 10 rounds, and strengthen penalties for gun trafficking.
The proposals have proved highly controversial with several sheriffs across the country vowing not to enforce restrictions that could be imposed by Congress or by executive order.
And, in Texas, a lawmaker has authored the Firearm Protection Act, which he says would “make any federal law banning semiautomatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable within the state's boundaries.”
In his Connecticut Post article, Obama admitted of his gun-control plans that “none of this will be easy.”
“Already we're seeing pundits, politicians, and special interest lobbyists warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty -- not because it's true, but because it gins up fear, or higher ratings, or more revenue for themselves,” the president wrote.
“The truth is, there's only one voice powerful enough to make this happen: yours. If you think we've suffered too much pain to allow this to continue, put down the paper, turn off the computer, and get your Members of Congress on record,” he wrote.
“Ask them if they support universal background checks or renewing a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. And if they say no, ask them why not,” he added.
On his proposed ban on assault weapons, Obama said that “weapons designed for theaters of war have no place in movie theaters.”
He insisited most Americans agreed with this and reached out to gun owners.
“This is the land of the free, and it always will be. As Americans, we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights that no man or government can take away from us. But we also recognize that along with those rights come responsibilities. Along with our freedom to live our lives as we will comes an obligation to allow others to do the same,” Obama said.
“Like most Americans, I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. There are millions of responsible, law-abiding gun owners in this country who cherish their right to bear arms for hunting, or sport; protection, or collection,” he added.
“But I also believe most gun owners agree that we can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible, law-breaking few from doing harm. I believe most of them agree that if America worked harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one in Connecticut. And that's what these commonsense reforms are designed to do.”

Something to think about... I am a 230lb male - In decent shape... how many of you could fend me off if I tried to rape you? President Obama STOP listening to the Uneducated Non Factual Emotive Opinions instead of Facts:
First, the .223 caliber (5.56mm) AR-15, as the .223 was original designed as a "Varmint" Cartridge fired from a bolt action rifle, and was adopted during the Vietnam War by the US Air Force (not Ground Combatants of the US Army nor USMC) for ease of training, and to wound not to kill to remove other combatants from Combat to evacuate the wounded (this was protested during the Vietnam War as against the Geneva Convention). As to why originally the US Law Enforcement that responded to Sandy Hook stated that the Bushmaster (copy of a Civilian AR-15) was found in his Mother's Car Trunk, the murderer using two handguns (pistols).
Second, prior to the adoption of the .223 caliber (5.56mm) the US Military and most Nations used the .308 caliber (7.62mm) as the standard cartridge (NATO standard) to KILL, not wound.
Third, AR is the BRAND NAME of Armalite, and does NOT mean Automatic Rifle, nor Assault Rifle.
Fourth, the AR-15 is the semi automatic Civilian version and NOT the Military M-16, M-4 selective Fire (including Full Automatic). Apparently you do NOT know the difference between Civilian Semi Automatic and Military Automatic (Selective Fire) and the current US Laws pertaining to the Possession or Ownership of Military Fully Automatic (Selective Fire) Firearms.

The 2nd Amendment does not grant or give you the "Right" to own a gun.
Here is the 2nd Amendment.
A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Does this sound like it is giving you a “Right”? Or is something else being clearly stated? To find out, let’s look at something else. Let’s look at a ruling of the US Supreme Court – specifically the matter of The Supreme Court of the United States, in U.S. v. Cruikshank 1876. I am not going to tell you what that case was about. I want you to read about yourself. But if you will read about this case, you will see how that this case reaches into the very bowels of today’s debate and debunks most of what you are hearing. It reaches deep into the idea that “Rights” belong to all men, without exception, and that neither states nor the federal government have the power to infringe upon certain “Rights”.
Here is the pertinent excerpt from The Supreme Court of the United States, in U.S. v. Cruikshank 1876.
“With regard to those acknowledged rights and privileges of the citizen, which form a part of his political inheritance derived from the mother country, and which were challenged and vindicated by centuries of stubborn resistance to arbitrary power, they belong to him as his birthright, and it is the duty of the particular state of which he is a citizen to protect and enforce them, and to do naught to deprive him of their full enjoyment. When any of these rights and privileges are secured in the constitution of the United States only by a declaration that the state or the United States shall not violate or abridge them, it is at once understood that they are not created or conferred by the constitution, but that the constitution only guaranties that they shall not be impaired by the state, or the United States, as the case may be. The fulfillment of this guaranty by the United States is the only duty with which that government is charged. Here is the key phrase.

Translation:
The Constitution, specifically the 2nd Amendment thereof, does not grant you the “Right” to own a
gun. That right predates the Republic itself. You would still have that “Right” even if there was no 2nd Amendment. What the 2nd Amendment does is to make it expressly illegal for the government of the United States of America to enact any law or take any action that infringes that “Right”.
Look at the word chosen to drive this point home, “infringe”. What does it mean? It means to encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another . Therefore, absolutely nothing can legally be
done that encroaches in any manner upon your “Right” to own the gun of your choice, the ammunition required to make that gun function, nor the magazine that holds that ammunition. The founding
fathers were wordsmiths. It is far too much of a stretch to say they meant anything other than the word chosen “infringe” and that word is about the strongest word they could have chosen.
I did not vote for President Obama either time. I disagree with too many of his policies and the direction of his leadership. I won't slam him here or anywhere else, because he is the President of the United States. He may be a great guy in person, I don't know. As a leader, I find him woefully lacking.
I am a Libertarian; a real one, not a Republican in rehab due to so many changes in the GOP. I find the constant insertion of religion into politics to be extremely distasteful and polarizing, although I do believe in God. I have voted Democrat in the past, because the Democratic party was not always as fiscally irresponsible as they have become now. The whole political theater with both parties has long since become stale for me; there are major issues in this country that must be addressed, but it's always a new crisis with this administration; something bright and shiny to distract the casual observer and "gin up" hysteria.
I am a law-abiding citizen, married, the mother of a now grown [and I will note, law-abiding] young man, and I contribute to society through my work as well as volunteer my personal time to causes that are important to me; chief among those is rape prevention and advocacy for victims of domestic violence. I am also pro-2nd Amendment and an owner of firearms, as is my husband. What they are doesn't matter here. They were all purchased legally and are stored carefully. Don't you dare criminalize me; I will speak up.
I see a disturbing thought process with the things this administration considers to be "mandates". Look at the illegal gun violence fueled by gang activity that flourishes in every large metropolitan area of our great nation as one huge example; these perpetrators aren't going to see the flow of rhetoric and and avoidance of the real causes of violence by politicians and suddenly straighten up and fly right. They'll continue to break the law, steal and kill, and as long as they remain "protected" by political correctness, they'll continue to wreak havoc on those law-abiding citizens whose civil liberties are being narrowed on an almost daily basis.
Sure, I'll be "lobbying", all right. Lobbying for the right to keep and bear arms, lobbying for education on what is and is not an "assault" weapon, what AR actually stands for [hint; it isn't "assault rifle"] educating others on what a semi-automatic weapon is and what it does versus an automatic, and whatever else I can do to educate the ignorant and hysterical gun-banner crowd. Oh, and printing out copies of the Bill of Rights for distribution. Seems too many people haven't read it.

The supreme court ruling I gave to you points out that you have the right to own a gun even without the 2nd amendment. I am sorry you got such a bad education, but that does not change anything. The 2nd amendment does not grant you the "Right" to own a gun and that is far better than if it did. If it did, that "Right" could be taken away by amending the constitution. They way the framers of the constitution protected your "Right" is far better that having the 2nd amendment give you that "Right" It states the government can not take that "Right" away, not even by conditional amendment. Justice Scalia, are you reading this? Your recent statements are totally incorrect in this area and you sit on the SCOTUS. Considering the only independant clause in the Second Amendment, "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (my emphasis), I'd say yes.
While you're doing that, look at a couple of Supreme Court decisions from this century: District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. Chicago (2010).

Wow, a lot of common sense ideas come out of the White House and the fringe start posting. A Gallup pole recently showed 80% of NRA members (which, in truth only has 4 million of the 300 million people in the US) showed they were FOR these types of steps. Just look at what a disaster our government has created with all its other wars. The wars on crime, drugs, poverty and illiteracy are all abject failures. So, instead of concentrating on those “wars” Barrack Hussein decides to launch another attempt at gun control.
It’s a shame he doesn’t realize that the gun problem, just like the crime, drugs and poverty problems are a result of our criminal education system, or more appropriately our lack of education system. You can try to control guns until you’re blue in the face, until you remove the cause the problems will persist.
If someone is hungry they will do whatever it takes to get food. If someone is addicted to drugs they will do whatever it takes to get their drug of choice. If someone is poor they will do whatever it takes to survive. If someone is mentally unstable they will often do irrational things, Sandy Hook and Aurora are examples.
Education is the foundation of fixing all these problems. The problem is, our education system is the main problem. Illiteracy drives people into poverty, drugs, crime and many mentally ill people are wandering our streets and neighborhoods.
Illiteracy, teen pregnancies and unemployment are the biggest drivers of our crime, drug and poverty issues. Mental illness is often missed or ignored. Violence is the biggest result of all these problems.
We can have all the data bases, research, laws and regulations but until Americans are educated and able to comprehend the dangers all these other problems cause we are kidding ourselves that more laws will fix anything. We have spent tens of trillions of dollars on all these wars and they continue to be embarrassing failures.
We graduate illiteracy from our primary and secondary school system and then we expect our children to be successful in college and subsequently in the global economy. Most Americans read at an 8th grade level, they can’t use—there, their or they’re—correctly in a sentence and they can’t calculate 60% of 770 in their head. 1. Background checks for all gun purchases.
2. Concealed carry classes and registry for anyone who wants to carry their firearm concealed outside their home, vehicle or place of business. This should not infringe on any state's laws (Colorado, for instance) regarding open carry.
3. A Federal law similar to Florida's 10-20-Life law. Make it a Federal crime to use a firearm in the commission of a felony: Mandatory 10 years in Federal prison for possessing a gun in the commission of a felony, 20 years for showing it, life for using it.

The Sandy Hook school shooting immediately reminded me of another shooting that occurred in Colorado Springs on December 9th 2007, where a gunman armed with an “assault rifle” and two handguns (sound familiar?) entered a church and began shooting those inside, killing two and wounding
three. In that case, the shooter was stopped by an armed volunteer security guard drew her licensed concealed handgun and returned fire, wounding the gunman. After being shot multiple times, the gunman took only one more life, his own.
While we will never know whether armed security could have “saved even one life” at Sandy Hook, I believe that there is no argument that the New Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs would have resulted in far more deaths had there not been someone there to stop the gunman.
You mock Mr. Wayne La Pierre of the NRA for advocating armed security in schools to keep our children safe, yet argue that “If there's even one life that can be saved, we've got to try.” Well, many lives were
saved by an armed guard in a church in Colorado, five years ago.

President Obama has the vast majority of the population and even the vast majority of gun owners on his side when it comes to universal background checks. A smaller but still significant majority of Americans favor banning military style assault weapons and large ammunition clips and belts.

Ten years ago, a Republican sponsored (Todd Tiahrt R-Kansas), NRA written bit of legislation was inserted into a funding bill. It gutted the ATF's ability to track firearms and enforce existing gun laws. It required that background check information be destroyed within 24 hours, restricts inspection of gun shops to once per year, cuts funding so that actual inspections only occur once every 17 years on average. It also removed any requirement for gun shops to take inventory or keep track of their products. Republicans have blocked Senate confirmation of a director of the ATF for the last 6 years. (this requirement was inserted into the Patriot act by John Sensenbrenner R-Wisconson. He won the NRA's defender of freedom award that year.) The total number of ATF agents has remained at 2500 for the last 35 years and they have 100,000 gun sellers to monitor, not to mention the alcohol and tobacco.
57% of guns used in crimes were traced back to only 1% of gun dealers. This information was obtained 20 years ago, but since then the ATF has been barred from collecting and using such a database. The NRA has little credibility after these attacks upon very reasonable gun legislation.

In the scheme of things the gun lobby represents a very small percentage of the population. Yet they wield such influence in Washington. Could it be that our politicians are for sale? Could it be that money buys support? Which if the case, maybe instead of asking the people to take on the gun lobby, Obama should be telling us how much it costs to buy politicians support.
As if any of these proposals are actually going to work. None of them are ground breaking, none new, and none have worked before. So the skepticism doesn't stem from anything other then the reality of what is being proposed. This is definitely a power grab by the federal government, and aimed solely at guns and in no way inclusive of the real problem. It is aimed at public perception and not reality.
Of course liberals are just going to point fingers at conservatives as being opposed. Even though garnering enough support among Democrats is not a foregone conclusion. Some of the biggest problems facing this nation is due in large part to selective enforcement of our existing laws. Immigration being the perfect example. How vigorously are existing gun laws really being enforced?
So with a laundry list of sure to fail proposals that only offers more power to the government while infringing upon law abiding citizens. Maybe a better deterrent would be a mandatory life sentence without parole for committing a crime using a gun. Juveniles included. I am a 42 year old female, weighing about 130, not completely out of shape but could be better, and I will defend my life until I cannot. However, I do own a gun. My husband is military and has taught simple ways to protect myself when I cannot get my gun. My first line of defense; is getting my gun and taking an intruder down who can and will hurt myself or my 14 year old daughter. About a year ago my daughter wanted to start shooting and is quite good. She has her own .22 (but for obvious reason cannot carry) and is locked up. She does know how to get it, load it, and shoot.
I will be getting my concealed permit in Feb, just wish I didn't wait so long!!

Lets have a violence tax on hollyweird movies. Lets say if they make a violent movie the first murder is a freebie.
After that a $100,000 fee is levied for each murder portrayed in the film where a gun is used.
$75,000 if a bomb is used.
$50,000 for all other acts of violent murder are portrayed.
On top of that lets have a gun shot fee impossed on them as well. For each time a gun is fired in a movie there should be a $10,000 tax.
Each time a gun is portrayed in a life threatening measure then they would have to pay a $5,000 tax.
So on and so forth. Of course we really are not going to call this a tax but instead we shall refer to

1) No such thing as a "high powered magazine." Magazines have no power other than to hold ammunition. I believe you meant "high capacity" magazine, which holds a large number of rounds.
2) There is no connection between the dead little girl in your hypothetical (presumably killed by someone using a semi-automatic rifle, given the tone of your post) and the semi-automatic rifle owned by someone that didn't do the killing. If the dead little girl had been run down by someone driving a Porsche, that doesn't mean Porsche owners as a whole bear any connection to that event. You also present a false choice between the right to own a gun and the life of a little girl. Since we've already established that there is zero connection between the two, your hypothetical is pure nonsense.

Arms=weapons, period. "Arms" isn't limited to "firearms" either, as that is simply a type of weapon. There is no arbitrary distinction between types of weapons within the 2nd Amendment. Your argument has zero credibility when you look at what weapons were owned and used by the "regular citizens" at the time of the founding and compare them to the "weapons of war" (to use your phrase) used in the Revolution. Guess what? They're the SAME WEAPONS.
Perhaps if you actually knew something about the 2nd Amendment, or about natural rights, then you'd see things differently.

The founders were quite clear on the matter that our rights are not "granted" or "given" by government, but come from the Creator. The Declaration of Independence refers to natural rights when it says "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." Governments are instituted "to secure these rights" and "derive their just powers from the consent of the governed..." The right to protect oneself, family, and property is one of the natural rights enjoyed by virtue of being human--this includes the ability to use force (and arms) if necessary. The 2nd Amendment does NOT, therefore, "grant" a previously non-existent right, it simply guarantees that a pre-existing right of the people could not be infringed upon by the government which they established.
Read some more on the history of the country, as well as the philosophies behind the events. Locke, Montesquieu, Paine, among others. The Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers are also quite illuminating.

I think we need new laws on the consumption of alcohol. There are far too many deaths caused by drunk driving in this country. First of all, no one needs anything stronger than 80 proof. We need to ban that immediately! Secondly, we need background checks and waiting periods for any type of hard liquor. And we need restrictions on packaging. A high capacity case of beer is highly dangerous, allowing the mass slaughter of individuals by vehicle. We should limit the sale of any alcohol to one 12 ounce container of anything with higher than 15% alcohol by volume to any one individual within a 24 hour period. Finally, anyone desiring to purchase alcohol needs to obtain a license and enter a training program for understanding on the proper use of the consumption of alcohol. This is a serious problem Mr. Obama, and I demand that you do something about it.
But we shouldn't stop there. A mandatory device should be installed on every vehicle of every person who drinks any type of alcohol. The person breathes into the device, and if there is even a trace of alcohol in their system, the vehicle doesn't start. Such a device already exists and this law should be implemented immediately for anyone who passes the above criteria and is granted the permission to legally consume alcohol.
There are an estimated 10,000+ deaths each year due to drunk driving accidents, far more than any mass murders. Why are you gun grabbers not concerned about this? Where is the outrage? It's because it doesn't fit your damned agenda, that's why!!
Mr President, and I use that term loosely, if you had any common sense at all you would look at all the areas where gun control laws are some of the strictess in this nation. They only cause your fellow law breakers to go into a feeding frenzy. They give people who want to break the law a self reliance that they can still violate the law. The example of stricter laws against drunk drivers is a good point, but also does not support the proposals of the president. A mandatory life sentence without parole for committing a crime using a gun would be a deterrent. Juveniles included. Anyone under age caught in possession of a weapon would face mandatory sentences in the juvenile system along with a hefty fine. Start a nationwide education program K-12 on gun violence and the consequences. Gun in hand, life in the can. They made the cost of driving drunk a deterrent to such behavior, and deterrents can work for guns as well.

Federal agents have watched people go into gun stores, buy thousands of dollars worth of guns, then walk out and sell them in the parking lot to anyone with money. They were curious as to where those guns went, so did it themselves. It turned out those guns went to smugglers and gangs. All perfectly legal.

Ten years ago, a Republican sponsored (Todd Tiahrt R-Kansas), NRA written bit of legislation was inserted into a funding bill. It gutted the ATF's ability to track firearms and enforce existing gun laws. It required that background check information be destroyed within 24 hours, restricts inspection of gun shops to once per year, cuts funding so that actual inspections only occur once every 17 years on average. It also removed any requirement for gun shops to take inventory or keep track of their products. Republicans have blocked Senate confirmation of a director of the ATF for the last 6 years. (this requirement was inserted into the Patriot act by John Sensenbrenner R-Wisconson. He won the NRA's defender of freedom award that year.) The total number of ATF agents has remained at 2500 for the last 35 years and they have 100,000 gun sellers to monitor, not to mention the alcohol and tobacco.
57% of guns used in crimes were traced back to only 1% of gun dealers. This information was obtained 20 years ago, but since then the ATF has been barred from collecting and using such a database. The NRA has little credibility after these attacks upon very reasonable gun legislation.

There are an estimated 60 million gun owners in the United states and about 234 million citizens of voting age. That means about 25% of the population owns guns.
Then when you figure some of that 234 million can't own a gun but support gun ownership (convicted felons, medically unable, etc.) AND figure some of those 234 don't own guns not because they don't want to but live in an area where doing so is very difficult (Chicago, New York, D.C., etc.) then you could easily get to 35% to 40%.
THEN you add those not interested in owning a gun BUT worried about a government trying to restrict our freedoms each and every day (new regulations, ObamaCare, higher taxes, etc.) so support gun ownership thus easily exceed 50%.
And Obama continues to fight against a group that is HALF the population and asks "ordinary Americans" to fight against HALF of their peers? Not smart. Not smart at all.

The reason our Administration is so concerned with an armed citizenry is because they know what is coming around the corner.

I was hoping that I did not have to go this deep. My two major concerns with those who are advocating for outlawing "Assault Weapons" is one, do you know what it actually is that they are trying to ban. Putting a pistol grip or collapsible stock on a rifle should not make it anymore of a "Military Style" or "Assault" weapon. That would be like saying if you slap a couple of fancy stickers and a spoiler on your Toyota Prius you automatically have a "NASCAR" ready rally car. Why am I bringing this up because under the previous band, having two or more of the characteristic listed above deemed a weapon an "Assault weapon" I implore anyone who is weighing in on this topic to know what an AR-15 or Bushmaster rifle is. These are not the big, "scary" guns that Rambo uses to mow down bad guys in bad guy land or that you see in action films. The sad but honest truth is Adam Lanza could have walked into that school with a golf club, a bat or a kitchen knife and achieved his goal(read the article about the man who killed 20 school age children in china with a cleaver the same day as sandy hook). This is not meant to be insulting, but how intimidating can something like scuba diving or even snorkeling be until you have actually have experience doing it. How scary is driving a car before you get comfortable doing it? You do not have to own guns or even use them routinely to have an opinion on this matter, but I strongly urge you to either talk to someone who is very familiar with guns or at the very least do some investigative research on what these guns are, how they differ from actual military weapons and what changes are being proposed, before demanding change. Part II to follow.
Part II: "Why do gun owners care? When will you ever need an "Assault Weapon" to hunt?" This is where you really have to put your thinking caps on and where I probably differ from most gun enthusiast. I am in the military (navy) and am a qualified small arms instructor. You are absolutely right. Outside of work, there are not a whole lot of practical uses for a ninety-round drum magazine. I hunt often and go to shooting ranges even more frequently and it is great not to have to change my magazine after ten rounds, but would it be a big deal if I had to? No. The reality is, that is not what this is debate is about. This is not about the number of deaths from these types of weapons. "Assault Weapons" are used in very, very few gun crimes. Why? Because they are big, bulky, hard to conceal and even for people who use them often, they are cumbersome to operate. It would have been much easier for them to use a handgun. Only a madman, a literal mad man, would use an assault rifle to commit these acts. If someone who is clearly not in their right mind can waltz into your establishment with an "Assault Weapon", your establishment has a security problem and more can and should be done to ensure only responsible people have guns. But none of that is what this is about. This is not about you. This is not about how much you dislike guns because they are "big", "ugly", "stinky" or "scary" and you have never had the need to use them. This is about a textbook issue. As in open any creditable textbook that talks about America's foundation and you will find irrefutable proof that our founding furthers, the framers of the constitution, desired its' citizen to have guns. Their desire was not just that people would have guns so they could hunt buffalo or for sportsmanship. Guns where a staple of the checks and balances this country was famously founded on. The president is not a supreme ruler because of the checks of congress. Congress is not all powerful because of their own divide as well as the supreme courts ability to provide checks and balances to laws. Government, foreign or domestic, cannot continuously and blatantly terrorize American citizens because we have the ability to defend ourselves. The founding fathers were not implying that if you do not agree with someone or your government that you should simply whip out your "Assault Weapon" and shoot them and neither am I. There knew peaceful means was the only way this government would work. Americans owning guns where a deterrent and a part of the checks and balance system. I guess There will have to be a part III.

Now is the time you will need to choose. Either our founding fathers, the framers of the constitution were "crazy, NRA like, anti-government, and conspiracy theorists" or they were the men of renown that we learned and taught our children about. Our founding fathers wanted us to work peaceably with the government on the notion of consent for the good of the nation. Yes, but the framers of the constitution were also very specific and adamant about ensuring that citizens had the right to bear arms. There were certain things that ensured us we were citizens instead of subjects, The right to vote, The right to own land and the right to bear arms. The musket excuse. In the time of our founding fathers they only had single shot weapons not "Assault Weapons" should Americans be allowed to have any type of weapon? There were also naval battleships during that time. The founding fathers did not include the right to bear battleships. It is clear that the founders wanted us to have the capability to protect our property and the resist the government should it become necessary. If every responsible Jew had a rifle before World War II would the holocaust have happened? Would they have been more equipped to defend themselves against such evil? I do not believe Barack Obama is anywhere close to Hitler, or that our government has become tyrannical, but you are only fooling yourself if you believe these things could not happen and history testifies against you. As I said before a lot of us have become self-centered and want new bands on guns because we don't like them, we don't use them and the band does not affect us. It is not about you, frankly, it is not about the lives we have lost to gun violence (there are other methods to prevent such), it is not about guns. It is a fundamental argument about what kind of nation this is. That's why?

Yes let's convince people that believing in myths (that criminals will follow the rules and laws, and that gun-free zones are safe) and relying on wishful thinking (can't happen to me, cops will be there in time to save me, etc) will protect them.
Vermont has a murder rate of 1+, with the least severe gun laws (don't need a permit to carry concealed), while Lousiana has a murder rate of 12+ with gun laws that are more severe then Vermont. Not to mention the District of Columbia with a murder rate of 20+. You have to pay attention to details, at each city, at each State, not only at our overall murder rate. Personally I think each State should continue deciding which gun laws work best for them.

What exactly are they considering to be military/assault rifles? If there was a clear-cut definition on this many people wouldn't be as concerned over a possible ban. The worry is that any rifle that appears to be ugly or menacing looking will be considered a assault rifle by those that know nothing about guns Many semi-automatics could fall into this class just because they are semi-automatic if the term isn't defined clearly. Some assault rifle characteristics are threaded barrels (for a silencer or suppressor), folding stocks, and most important selective fire. An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle since they can't switch to automatic fire. So just what rifles are they considering to be "military or assault" rifles?

While I agree with some of your contentions you are way off base here. We used automatic Colt M4s in Fallujah and could barely knock down half of the insurgents. I watched a Madhi Army scout get hit over 13 times and still stay on his feet. 223/556 rounds are horrible at destroying a human body most of our federal ammo simply passed through the torso. 3rd Marines actually had an easier time knocking down insurgents with handguns and shotguns.

Sorry, but I stand by my previous comment, Miklkit. There are plenty of laws and regulations on the books already. Adding more will not make it safer. Enforcing the ones in existance may (and that is a tenuous may) help a bit, but again - the people who are following the laws are not the ones we need to fear. It is the people who are using the guns to break the laws. Do you seriously think a criminal who wants a gun is going to think twice because there are new rules about background checks in place? They are going to continue getting their weapons illegally. The only people who will be penalized are those following the laws in the first place.
Mental health issues have played a large part in most heinous shooting sprees. Better mental health care, more facilities to house those who are not safe to be part of "normal" society, etc. would be a much greater service to the country than more gun laws.

People need to hold lawmakers accountable at the ballot box if they resist strengthening gun laws and closing up the loop holes. No one can make a legit argument to support bad guys getting guns, and doing nothing to close down their access to weapons and ammo. One of the ways we can make streets alot safer, is by contolling ammunition sales, and bullet making materials for self loaders. No criminals should be able to buy ammo for their illegal gun.
A gun license system, and a gun registry, are an obvious answer to closing up some major loopholes. Requiring a license to buy anything gun related, especially ammunition, should be at the top of the list of new laws. Renewing that license periodically, is how you retest gun owners every year or so. To make sure they are still not criminals. Lots of law abiding citizens become criminals after they have bought a gun. Theres no way for authorities to know about it, and confiscate their gun, unless they are caught in public with it, and the officer runs a check. A criminal needs to be disarmed as soon as possible. The only way to do that is with a gun registry. A gun license is just a convenient way to show other people that you are okay to buy gun related stuff.. It would be a good way for private sellers to check a buyer, no license, no sale. Currently, private sales get no check of any kind. That needs to change.
I personally dont think bans on so called assault weapons are necessary. But I do think that people who want to own an assault weapon, should have to go through a lot more of a process to get one. And they should have a bunch of rules attached to that ownership. With regular unannounced inspections to make sure they are complying with said rules. They should have to have a secure gun safe, thats bolted down and cant be stolen. They should have to have an alarm on it. They should have to store the ammo for that assault weapon in a separate safe with the same precautions. In a different room than the gun safe. If the assault rifle isnt in your immediate possession, it should have to be locked in the safe by law. And the ammo in its safe. Adam Lanza wouldnt have been able to steal his mothers guns if they were locked up in this manner. It should be illegal for anyone else to have access to those guns in any way. Including family members, especially any with mental health issues.

Actually, you are wrong. I am a Conservative Republican, and a Vietnam Vet. Our small unit received the first model of what is today called the Bushmaster. It was a short stock, short barrel version with a heavy mussel suppressor designed to keep the weapon manageable when fired holding just the pistol grip. The weapon was rarely used in automatic mode because of the rate of fire. As a semi-automatic weapon, we measured a rate of fire at 100 rounds per minute, even when reloading was required. The weapon was designed as an assault weapon from the start. Higher capacity magazines soon followed, and we were thankful to have the weapon during suicide attacks. I have owned many different weapons since Vietnam, and I have never gone hunting since 1968. I see guys with magazine extenders for their Glock's when I go to the firing range. What makes any weapon an assault weapon is the ability to deliver multiple shots without the need for reloading, and the weapon's ability to reliably fire hundreds of shots in a controlled manner. Gun manufacturers pushed these weapons into American Gun Shops and Walmart, knowing that the weapons were designed for military or police use only. If you have never served in combat, thank God for the blessing you received. When I think of holding the hand of friends who died in combat, or visiting the Memorial Wall, I can honestly say that assault weapons are nothing more than killing machines in the hands of a person seeking to kill their enemy in battle. I stand with the President of the United States and the parents, spouses, and loved ones of every person killed by a person who purchased high capacity assault weapons for use in their own private war. The battlefield cannot be a school, theater, or shopping mall. God Help America! We have lost our moral compass for this discussion. We need to protect our children, not with more guns or more guards in our schools, but with more rational thought and discussion.

When I took the oath of office to be an officer in the US Army, I did so knowing that I would be bound by my honor to protect the constitution for the rest of my life. There are many ways to protect the constitution, and if we are more successful in some, we reduce the possibility of violence and bloodshed in the name of protecting the constitution.
I am trying to raise the knowledge of what the constitution says, so that it will be more difficult for politicians, including the president, to intentionally distort facts in an effort to attack the constitution. This is why I am trying to set the record strait as to what is really stated and implied in the 2nd Amendment.
The second amendment does not grant you the right to own a gun because the government does
not have the power under the constitution to give nor take away rights. What the second amendment says is that your God given right to own a gun shall not be infringed by your government. That is entirely different than what most people state as the meaning behind the second amendment.
All of the rights in the bill of rights are much stronger than most realize, but especially so for the second amendment because it is the second amendment that guarantees all the others.
So again, the government can not give you the right to own a gun because a government that has the power to give you a right, also would have the power to take that right, and in fact all rights, away. Our founding fathers were far more intelligent than most people give them credit.
The beauty of the second amendment, other than being the most important, is that it very carefully states the not so obvious that giving or taking away your right to own a gun is not and never was within the scope of the power of this republic nor its elected representatives, including the president, the judicial branch of this government, and the members of congress.
So long as the republic and the rule of law exists, that will remain constant. When the rule of law no longer exists, then we prove the founding fathers were rightly afraid of government, and then by their fear of government and careful and deliberate design of the constitution, even from their graves they continue to fight for your freedom. So long as the rule of law exists, you will have the right to own a gun. When the rue of law no longer exists, then the 2nd amendment becomes even more important then ever.
Another really stupid argument from the left that needs to be put to rest is that the second amendment is somehow limited to allowing only the ownership of deer hinting rifles. What gibberish. Your right to bare arms shall not be infringed which means you can own whatever you want and that means there is also no test of purpose tied to that ownership. The second amendment exists, not to control the population of deer. It exists, so that if congress fails to protect the constitution, you have the ability to control the population of enemies of the constitution. Nothing more. Nothing less.
My intent is to educate loyal citizens to be better able to defend their rights through debate, so they can spot unconstitutional purpose in the statements of their elected leaders, so we might all avoid the real purpose of the 2nd amendment from having to occur. You are spouting the same scary bull $hit that is completely turning Americans off to guns and their advocates. The majority of Americans understand that we live in a representative democracy and they DO NOT FEAR their own government, they understand that contrary to gun nut rhetoric they have recourse through their vote and the law. We are a civilized society and we are determine to remain that way. Americans respect their government because they are the government, and when you start implying that you and other gun nuts are prepared to mount an armed insurrection over an exaggerated and unreasonable interpretation of the second amendment rather than work with sensible people to control mindless gun violence, you are not defending the Constitution, you are trampling its broader intent and essentially going to war with your fellow citizens. I think they still call that treason.

Please point to the support for your argumet in the constitution. Shouting louder does not make your vies more sound. All I have stated is supported by the constitution that is our rule of law. Please show me in the constitution where I have strayed from that.
The 2nd amendment was originally created to make it easier for southern states to control their slaves with state militias. It even says "states" instead of "United States".
Cars and guns should be well regulated the same ways.

Are you sure of your statements as factual? Where did you get this idea? The supreme court disagrees with you, but you may very well know better. I just would like to know the source of this thinking.

Mounting an armed insurrection over your right to bear arms and fight an armed insurrection IS NOT DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION. its a fools circle JERK. The second amendment is open to 1) broad interpretation, and 2) is but a tiny part of the whole document. We have a great deal of recourse to right wrongs, to address grievances long ahead of the need for any sort of rebellion. We have our vote and we have our laws, and they are by any measure superior to GUNS. The Revolution was fought over Ideas not guns, it was fought to repel oppression not embrace it. When you embrace a gun you are dancing with the devil and making that devil and its power available to friends as well as enemies.

Oh James. We are so different in our views. As to you calling me a JERK in upper case, all I have to say is this. Your having to resort to name calling only indicates the weakness of your arguments.
If and so long as the congress can be TRUSTED to protect the constitution, there will never be a need for the people to use the "Rights" guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to bring the government back to a constitutional government. But that is a big "if". Are you really willing to bet the future freedom of the world on that "if".. You see, the big difference between you and me is I will not take that bet.
No one is protecting the constitution now from the assaults that occur routinely, so why should I trust the congress to protect my rights in the future, if they are failing in the present to do so? President Obama has already violated his oath of office in many, many ways. I'll give you a clear example.
When he and his attorney general stood up and announced publicly they would no longer enforce certain laws, the president basically negated the work of the elected representatives of this country that passed those laws. He does not have the power to do that because the office he holds does not have the power to do that because the office he holds is not given that power by the constitution. This is exactly why someone has to take an oath of office in the first place. That oath is supposed to bind them on their honor to respect the limits of power of the office they are taking.
When the president uniterally sets aside constitutionally enacted law, he is giving to his office the rightful powers of the Supreme Court that can determine a law to be unconstitutional, or he is giving to himself the powers that belong to the legislative branch that has the power to write a new law and overturn the old law. But president Obama does not have the constitutional power to just set aside constitutional law, but this is what he did.
In doing so, he demonstrated to the world that he lacks sufficient honor to bind himself to the power of his office as is dictated by the constitution. In my mind, when he violated the constitution, he became a danger to the constitution itself. What will he do next? Will he have a citizen killed without due process? Oh. Wait. already did that too. And when that happened, congress should have followed through with impeachment preceedings, but congress did nothing.
In a few days, a member of the supreme court will most likely administer to the president elect yet another oath of office. I say, what is the point if it is now meaningless. The president elect has already proven that such an oath does not bind him to the powers of his office so let's just have the party and forget the swearing in.
What should occur is the supreme court should meet and decide obama is unfit for office and swear in vp elect Biden instead, but don't hold your breath. That will not happen despite the fact that they too took an oath to protect the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic and that would certainly be a way to protect the constitution from someone that has violated it many times in the past.
So let's just have a clean sweep. The executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch of government no longer have to protect the constitution. No one is bound to their oath of office to protect the constitution.
Now tell me again why the people do not need a 2nd Amendment?
I have many rights as a citizen of this country. I did not earn those rights nor did I secure those rights from others that would deprive me of them. I received my rights as my birthright. I am very grateful for the legacy of freedom I have as a citizen of this country and that is exactly why I am not willing to surrender any of my rights, nor allow you to surrender yours, no matter what the mob of today wants to do.
You either believe in the rule of law or you do not. Obviously, there are those high up in our government that do not. Nor do they believe that an oath of office means very much. Nor do they have honor. Because of this I say hurray for the 2nd amendment and the restrictions it places on government. Our founding fathers were simply brilliant !!!

I'd like to see an explanation of why the NRA and their spineless crony politicians find it necessary to allow criminals to acquire guns at gun shows (no background checks). Supporting the ability of criminals to acquire weapons, and illicit gun dealers to profit from the sale of weapons to criminals does not serve the purpose of the 2nd amendment, nor the interests of law abiding citizens. In my opinion, the NRA and the gun lobby created this gun culture and ease of access to weapons by criminals and the mentally ill, and are thus fully complicit in shootings such as at Sandy Hook.
Hey Spike, gun show dealers do background checks instantly by computer. I have no idea what a "gun culture" is. Maybe that is what started hundreds of years ago when people had to hunt for food. The NRA does not condone giving weapons to the mentally ill, or criminals. It is people like you that believe if you take guns from good guys, that somehow bad guys will magically stop hurting others. You are living in a dream world. We are the good guys! Thankfully our numbers have grown by 250,000 new NRA members in 18 days. The Nagr is now at 1.6 million.
One more time, for all of you that have no clue what you are talking about; An AR15 is a semi-automatic rifle, it is the same as any semi automatic hunting rifle, it just looks different. The M16 is an assault weapon, it can fire fully automatic and is intended to kill the enemy in war. The genral public cannot own an M16.

If that's the kind of rubbish you're reading, no wonder you have issues. I suggest you read the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers to get an understanding of the 2nd Amendment and why the Constitution was ratified. Those are actual, authoritative sources on the matter, unlike "Daily Kos."
The so-called "gun show loophole" is the same loophole that exists outside of gun shows--it is called "private sale." Gun dealers at gun shows still have to run a background check when they sell their inventory to customers. Two private citizens engaging in a transaction, at a gun show or anywhere else, do not.
In other words, the anti-gun lobby in the media is simply picking on gun shows, when it can happen anywhere.
