A winter storm will spread both snow and rain across the South and into the Mid-Atlantic Thursday into Thursday night.
A strong area of low-pressure will move through the Deep South Thursday and head into the Atlantic Ocean by early Friday.
Ahead of this system, heavy rain and flooding will be a concern in parts of the Appalachians and Southeast.
Rain is expected to change to snow and sleet Thursday morning through Thursday evening in areas from parts of Mississippi, northern Alabama, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee to the Southern Appalachians, northern North Carolina and Virginia.

The heaviest accumulations of snow -- 6 inches or more – were expected in the higher elevations of the Southern Appalachians.
Parts of Mississippi, northern Alabama and northern Georgia could see anything from a dusting to a few inches.
To the east of the Appalachians, 1 to 4 inches of snow with locally higher amounts possible could hit from northern North Carolina to parts of central/eastern Virginia and southern Maryland.
Some accumulating snow is possible as far north as the Washington, D.C. and Dover, Del. metro areas, which could affect the afternoon and evening commute.
This is roughly the northern fringe of potential accumulations in this region and exact amounts will be dependent on how much moisture reaches this far north.
The southern fringe of possible snow accumulations may reach as far south as Raleigh, N.C. and Greensboro, N.C.
If D.C. can officially record more than two inches of snow, it would exceed the entire total from all of last season. So far this season, only two tenths of an inch of snow has been measured.
Though snowfall with this system will be of short duration, it could also be heavy at times. Given that temperatures have been mild recently, the best chance for accumulations in the lower elevations outside the Appalachians will be on grassy and elevated surfaces. That said, heavier snowfall rates could lead to accumulations on road surfaces as well.
As the storm shifts out to sea on Thursday night, it may move close enough to the Northeast coast to bring some snow to parts of the southern New Jersey coast, eastern Long Island and far southeastern New England.

I wonder the storm will interfere with The Inauguration? After all, over a million will be attending. But, of course, only about fourteen will be missing work to do so! Know what I mean?
That number changes to about 900,000 if you (1) count government workers, and (2) assume they all work.

The Inaguration is Monday. The storm will be out to sea Friday. The forcast for Monday is sunny and cold.

It will not snow here in the south. It has been raining 4 days straight. Not that cold. IT will be just more rain. Thanks for the disappointment.

You never know Jack..it was in the 60's in Boston for 2 days, then I woke up yesterday to snow on the ground.

It is amazing that the Republican Fringe could care less about civility and fairness and yes, facts, but that they are proud that they have crossed the line of sanity and have entered the realm of downright paranoid delusion and denial of reality. They do not realize that they have been led (for great profits) down the path to Crazyville. The Far Right Fringe proves that we need easy access to mental health treatment in the USA on a large scale. The fact that they have given themselves to the Republican Talking Heads, proves their gullibility and their inability to reason in a sane manner; they cannot think for themselves in a rational manner. They have no grasp of society or the era in which the rest of us live. The 21st Century frightens them and that alone makes them easy to manipulate.
Historically, those who put party above country and those whose goal is to tear the government down are nothing more than traitors. The excuses willl abound if they ever realize the crooked path on which they have been led, but at this point, they had rather be Far Right Fringe than sane or free.

You are very mistaken, I live in the "Deep South"! New Orleans to be exact. And we won't be getting any SNOW! Stop calling North Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia deep south because that is the sun/corn belt of this once great nation. Try coming down to the "Deep South" for Mardi Gras. And you will indeed see the deep south. Maybe you need to take a course of Geography with your weather classes because you are so misinformed its' pitiful!!!!! Other than that, I wish we would get some snow. Just saying you haven't been to the Real Deep South that's all.
Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, SouthCarolina, Louisiana, and Texas are indeed the Deep South - they are all in deep caca, as usual!

Monday will be a beautiful day regardless of the weather. This nation will again have a President who will try to work with the rich and the GOP to find solutions that don't but the entire burden on the middle class and the poor. I am willing to think that Mr. Romney is a very nice man, but his values as President would have scared me. And can you imagine the money corporate America would have spent for his inauguration? They would have had to ask their CEOs to take a reduction in their multi-million dollar salaries for one year.
On the issue of more gun control, it is as controversial as abortion rights. I know no one who sits on the fence on this issue -- either they are for more restrictions or they are opposed. Neither position is any more right than the other.
