Florida man run over, killed after dog pushes vehicle's accelerator

A Florida man has died after a dog jumped into a van and pushed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to strike the man as he opened a gate outside of his home, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that 68-year-old James Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The strange incident began as Campbell and Iris Fortner, 68, returned to their home in Cantonment, Fla., on the Florida Panhandle on Monday.

According to an FHP report, while Fortner, who was driving, backed a 1995 Chevy van into their property, Campbell got out of the passenger's side of the vehicle to open a metal gate outside their home.

As Fortner opened the driver's side door to see where Campbell was standing, her large boxer came running toward the van and jumped in, pressing the accelerator, the report said.

Before Fortner could stop the vehicle, it struck and ran over Campbell, trapping him under it, according to the report. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Campbell's death is under investigation. Fortner has not been charged.

Uh ya, that's the ticket! Uh, officer, it wasn't me the uh, dog did it.

My high school principal's wife supposedly exited the car on the driver's side (although she was not the driver) and "accidentally" hit the accelerator drove the man through the garage door and out the back of the garage. He survived only to be chased by an elephant. The elephant got loose from a circus set up across the street from his house--the elephant was eating his shrubs, so he went to chase it away and got chased himself! Absolutely true, poor guy did not have good luck.

Ahhh yea...1st of all I think a Boxer is kind of big to get under the wheel and reach all the way to the pedals and push that down!! I'm thinking there is something else going on here and she is blaming the DOG!!

This don't jive. If the driver was sitting in the seat at the wheel, his foot had to be on the brake if he did not put it in park. If the dog hit the go pedal - how did the van run the guy over? They said it was a large dog - how did he get between the drivers legs and the go pedal? Something stinks.

She should have had her foot on the brake peddle and had been able to quickly put the vehicle in park when the dog jumped in and got close to the accelerator peddle. Just as we have a min. age requirement for driving a motor vehicle we need to have a max. age limit as well as reaction and cordination deteriate with age.

I'm showing this article to my Schnauzer! I'm always telling him that he'll be the death of me! No more joy rides for him! He's no longer alowed to run or jump or fetch the ball outside unless the car is in the garage!

When is this insanity going to end? When are the politicians going to do something about all the deaths caused by cars. We need to ban cars so this never happens again. Common sense measures would have prevented this from happening.

Okay. There, at the end of the article, was the truth: The woman killed the man, presumably by some combination of carelessness and brainlessness. Also presumably, she will be counseled, not punished.

Another reason to own cats, indoor types. Neutered and spayed of course. And don't forget trap, neuter(spay), release for the feral cats you can catch.

              Reply#44 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:13 AM EST

Trap and shoot is much more effective, and much more humane to the feral cats that would otherwise be hit by vehicles or killed by other animals, or starve.

Just make sure you only put down seven at a time or you will be branded a criminal for having a firearm that holds eight rounds.

Wait a minute, she was driving so when the dog jumped into the car, they jump onto the lap they don't go for the floor of the car because the driver's legs are in the way so a dog the size of a boxer cannot get in. Maybe she blamed the dog because it startled her as it jumped on her lap and she stepped onto the accelerator.

Doesn't sound possible. Even if the van was in reverse and she had her foot on the brake, and the dog jumped in and hit the accelerator pedal, the car still wouldn't move - if her foot was on the brake. I'll be interested to see how it ends.

This was bad safety practice on the part of the driver. The driver made 2 big mistakes. When a passenger is getting out; the vehicle should NOT be in gear. Additionally, the driver should have had her foot on the service brake. Even if a dog hits the accelerator, the service brake is designed to hold the car still even with the engine revving while in gear.

The car was probably in gear just not the one the passenger need it to be in for the dog to make the car go forward.

Another senseless death as the result of private animal ownership. How many people must die before we outlaw all private ownership of animals. Especially large "Assault" animals?

If your whacko right wing idiots that belong to the Kennel Club must own dogs, they should be limited to nothing larger than a "teacup" poodle.

ONE MORE LAW IS ALL WE NEED TO STOP THE VIOLENCE AND DEATH FROM ANIMALS!
