Florida man run over, killed after dog pushes vehicle's accelerator

A Florida man has died after a dog jumped into a van and pushed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to strike the man as he opened a gate outside of his home, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that 68-year-old James Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The strange incident began as Campbell and Iris Fortner, 68, returned to their home in Cantonment, Fla., on the Florida Panhandle on Monday.

According to an FHP report, while Fortner, who was driving, backed a 1995 Chevy van into their property, Campbell got out of the passenger's side of the vehicle to open a metal gate outside their home.

As Fortner opened the driver's side door to see where Campbell was standing, her large boxer came running toward the van and jumped in, pressing the accelerator, the report said.

Before Fortner could stop the vehicle, it struck and ran over Campbell, trapping him under it, according to the report. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Campbell's death is under investigation. Fortner has not been charged.

I think the wife did it and blamed it on the dog. It sounds far fetched to me. The wife wanted to run away from an abusive relationship with the husband, now everyone is happy- dog and wife!

I actually had a similar experience with my dogs a few years ago. I had three dogs at the time, who were all in the car with me, and stopped the car to put a letter in the mail box. I put the car in park, and literally took two steps away from it to stick the letter in the box when the car started to move. One of the dogs had knocked the gear shift into "Drive"! I was able to jump back into the car and put my foot on the brake, but if I had been in front of the car, I would have been a goner. This is a tragic accident but is in no way the dog's fault. Word to pet owners who drive with the dogs: always turn the car off when you leave the drivers seat.

NOBODY needs to own more than one dog! And if they have one it should be only a very small dog. No large dogs that are known for their assaulting people.

Well, stupid is always stupid. What the hell are you doing driving around with 3 dogs in the car anyway. Do you text while driving also?

This story is F'n stupid. I have never gotten out of my vehicle with it still in gear. If the man did this I am surprised he made it to 68 years old. Now let's say he did take it out of gear and place it in park. Are they trying to say the dog shifted it into drive or first gear then depressed the accelerator. Wow! Talented dog.

It is just amazing how low the reading comprehension levle is on this vine. THE MAN WAS THE PASSENGER. NOWHERE DOES IT SAY THE WOMAN WAS THE "WIFE." The woman, (GIRLFRIEND?), remained in the driver's seat.

On an unrelated side note - one hour earlier, Campbell revealed to Fortner that he had her named as sole beneficiary on a really good life insurance policy.

What kind of insurance policy does he have on him?.....Why would you open a door to see somebody in front of the van?.......If she was getting out...why was the van running and in gear?........Was anybody angry?...Facts don't fit the fluke dog story sensibly......How did the dog get in if she was getting out? Can a big dog get past the steering wheel and on to the gas peddle?

If the driver wsa getting out the van should have been in park then if the dog stepped on the accelerator it would rev the engine but not drive it foreward.....hmm.. Sounds like a far fetched story to me. I think the wife killed him and blamed the dog lol
