By the way, a very high percentage of White Americans have subconcious racial bias against Black. There is a psychological test you can take...it's subconicous you can't hide it. And certain areas, like a subway station by yourself at night, you probably should be armed. Yes it is a racist comment. Not all young black men do these things. As a metter of fact, a very small percentage of young black men do these things. It's really more a matter of perception and the kind of news that gets reported. good acts don't necessarily sell news.

If this homeless guy had been white, no one would have brought any of this race bs up. Racism is when assumptions are made because of an individual's DNA. Whether that is a valid assumption or not, I do not know. But until someone can prove scientifically that it is the DNA and not the environment that causes bad behavior, I will assume that racisim is an invalid perspective.

The best lesson I ever got in my life was when I was very young, when prejudice and racism were pervasive. ("Amos and Andy" were still on television, even.) I was in a chess club and I got checkmated by a black chess player who was 2 or 3 years younger than I was. Then he won again, and then for a third time in a row.

It was important for me to learn this, especially at such a young age, because it gave me the insight to know that general population consensus is basically a mob mentality.

As far as criminal demographics goes, it is the result of a very complex function. But I will doubt very much that it's based in large part on DNA until someone proves otherwise, scientifically.

I also found it very peculiar that you brought up losing in chess to a black person, as if the color of your opponent's skin mattered or that losing a board game to a black person was relevant to the conversation because they had a different skin color than you did. I failed to see what point that had. What, did you think that dark skin = bad strategist? Because that is all I can seem to get from that, and it certainly would be a very racist view.

Prejudice isn't necessarily racism, because it could be prejudice against other things than just skin color. But prejudice against a certain skin color is the very definition of racism. And either way, prejudice is never a good thing. You missed my point. Based on your assumptions and by how you interpreted my post, you also revealed some of your own, subjective prejudice.

Let me explain it for you.

I learned at a very young age that racism is stupid. Why is that a bad thing?

We are all prejudiced in some way about some things and prejudice is not necessarily irrational. It is a survival mechanism. We use our experience to evaluate circumstances. This has nothing to do with race. I am prejudiced to think that what appears to be prosititute will either carry an STD or be an undercover police officer. I am prejudiced to think that a person with no teeth and damaged skin who is asking me for money is likely to be a meth addict.

"Looks like a thug" means exactly that and no more. For you to assume that I implied anything about skin color makes you prejudiced, doesn't it?

Not a bad recovery on the surface. But based on some other things in your post, I could only assume what the message as a whole meant and get what I got from that. It is one thing to say you aren't a racist, and another to actually talk like you aren't a racist. I could go into further detail, but I feel like I already went into enough before in my last comment. The point here, though, is that the general vibe from the words you wrote, whether or not you intended it to be that way, did imply this. And not because I am prejudice, but because I actually tried to find meaning behind what you said.

First of all, your argument to try and justify prejudice is not only ignorant but disturbing. There is a huge difference between allowing irrational bias to slant your views based merely off of prejudice, and evaluating objectively and rationally. And as much as you say you claim you learned your lesson and that you realize racism is stupid, many of the things you say hint otherwise. Now I don't know you. Maybe you have indeed learned your lesson very young and are no longer a racist. But I can only go off of what you said here. And the truth is that I don't see why you would feel the need to justify prejudice if you weren't holding on to a little bit of that racism, even if only subconsciously. And again, many of the people who perpetrate crimes don't exactly "look like thugs," like the Sandy Hook shooter. You act as if your "prejudice" will protect you from danger. It is important to be aware of your surroundings, but to simply rely on things looking a certain way is at the very least stereotypical and unrealistic. The prejudice that you claim is so valuable will actually mislead you more often than not. Given all that, I hope you can see why someone reading this might think that this alone might be a hint of a certain deeper bias. And honestly, I'm personally still not convinced you are over this based on what you have been saying. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin. It is all about an economic status and the psychological effect of the high concentration of people. It used to be that around 90% of people born into an economic category will stay within that level. In other words 90% of people who are born into Welfare will stay there, 90% of Middle Class will stay there, etc. 5 % are able to climb to the next level and unfortunately 5 % fell to the level below.

More recently, because of the mismanagement of the economy by both political parties, the rate of those falling downward has increased and the ratio of those leveling up has decreased. When you concentrate large groups of people with limited income, no hope of changing their lives for the better and sub-par "Free" education (a whole separate problem) they are going to act out of fear, lack of respect for themselves and others, and out of self interest, regardless of the color of the their skin.

It will be hard to deal with the concentration of people in a city, most people, again, stay near to where they are born or choose to move to a city because of the potential of economic benefit through a job or access to public services. The only solution is to have people move away. But then we have places like Detroit to see how that works out.

Finding a way to increase the Middle class (shrinking both the poor and the wealthy or super-wealthy as we have now), instead of destroying it would go a long way to rebuilding our country and the former social morality that prevailed. However the politicians, at all levels and from both political parties (despite what they say, what their news organization mouthpieces promote and what their blind, faithful followers parrot around the office cooler), are more interested in grabbing what they can while they are in office.

As the unchecked economic problems grow and the national debt increases the ranks of the poor will swell and the actions in this news article will become the norm in our society - not because of skin color or genetic makeup.

Its crazy that anyone would even bring up race in this case

A) its Philadelphia, 43% of the population is black so the odds of a crime being committed by a black person is probably about 50% when you factor in social economic issues that would affect someones status in the city... like being raised around ridiculous prejudices that would make someone assume that just because your skin is dark you're uneducated, poor, incompetent, untrustworthy etc. If you grow up aware that these are the perceptions of you (and black ppl are fully aware) it makes it hard to achieve your potential.

B) The man was mentally ill. It has nothing to do with skin color unless you're referring to the fact that in the black community mental illness goes largely untreated and undiagnosed because of stigma (both the stigma of being "crazy" and the stigma that "he's one drugs" or "he's just looking for drugs") and lack of resources.

If you stay ignorant about the problems and use the simplest cues to blame (hes black, he has a big jacket, his hair is in braids, hes a thug) then nothing will ever get fixed.

Why are you singling out African American males? The Sandy Hook shooter, as well as the Aurora Colorado Theater shooter, was white. The person who shot Gabby Giffords in the head in Tucson Arizona was white.

If you didn't know, 20 children died in the Sandy Hook massacre. They were shot point blank multiple times with an assault rifle.

12 people lost their lives in the Aurora shooting.

6 people died in the Tucson shooting.

Wow, plenty of things to address. First of all, the perp appears to be white. He's wearing a dark ski mask, but when he turns around, I believe that is white skin around his eyes. I may be wrong, however, and I really don't approve of cops deciding not to release racial details to locate some guy who almost killed a lady who had tried to help him. There are albino blacks, but they are still black. There are whites with deep tans, but they are still white. Skin color matters when discussing skin cancer, but not crime. Race, however, does matter when discussing crime.

Also, there is a huge difference between an assumption of zero versus an assumption of 100%. We don't have to assume that ALL blacks are criminals nor do we have to assume that NONE of them are. It is quite possible to assume, instead, that some blacks are criminals and some aren't, but that blacks are statistically several times more likely to commit crime than other races, and our assumptions would be completely factually correct. Even the Reverand Jesse Jackson admitted that when he was in a dark alley at night and turned around to find the footsteps behind him belonged to a white man, he was relieved. And I was relieved when he admitted this, because that's exactly how I feel!

Black versus white crime rates are comparable to male versus female crime rates. Blacks commit about 6 times as much crime as whites, and men commit about 6 times as much crime as women. If blacks want to cry discrimination, perhaps men should cry that as well. Obviously, this proves the cops are only arresting men, right? Of course, I can name several black street gangs, but I can't think of a single white one. Blacks are actually more violent in wealthy, liberal areas than in poor, conservative ones. Take a look at some of the most affluent black cities. For instance, Baldwin Hills, California ("the black Beverly Hills") has a median income of $157,033 as well as a violent crime rate 4 times the national average. The same is true for the surrounding affluent black areas, with much more wealth AND crime than most of the rest of Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the white poverty stricken areas of Mississippi, West Virgnia, Kentucky, and Arkansas, not to mention the Appalachian Hills and Amish country all have something in common - violent crime rates BELOW the national average! Would you expect the murder rate to be higher in a place where the monthly rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is $500 a month, as it is in Kentucky, or $1300 a month - the price in Oakland, California? If the reason for all of the gang activity in Oakland is because blacks are poor, perhaps they should pick up and move to a place like Kentucky, where they can afford the rent. If black teens had to get up with the sun and perform farm work, as many white kids across the country must (especially in the poorer areas of America), I suspect we'd see a drastic drop in crime by these, no longer idle, teens. And those farm kids can rarely afford to go to college, either. Many join the military, instead.

I'll hand you this - black crime has more than quadrupled since the Civil Rights movement, so the problem probably has more to do with lack of accountability than DNA. No matter how many whites go on killing sprees, blacks still murder whites at a rate of about 20 times the reverse in this country. At least we can take solace that the black versus white crime discrepancies in more liberal countries like Sweden dwarf ours.

Three times in just a few days we've seen someone pushed into the subway pits. I think this proves a theroy I've had on crime. The more a type of crime is published, the more likely it will be repeated. I think we have seen that with the school shootings. If you recall after the Colubine attack there were serveal copy cats attemps. We likewise had a few copycat attemps after Sandy Hook; but thankfully all were caught before they could carry out their plans. Has anyone else noticed this? BTW China had their share of school attacks too that I think was partly motivated by Media coverage. Google "China school attacks 2010" and reasd the Wilkipediea article and you'll see what I mean if you read all the article. The more media coverage, the worse it got.

Why do you think these things are happening now - because behavior like this is not only tolerated, but encouraged by the pansy-a** policies of our current administration. The belief that the government should provide the ultimate safety net, that big brother will provide, that entitlement reigns supreme, which are all huge points on the current agenda, lead to the ultimate rejection of personal responsibility. So yes, absolutely, we should ban subway trains since of course we cannot be trusted to use them in a safe and responsible manner. We should also ban hammers, rocks, kitchen knives, all sources of water such as bathtubs, swimming pools and lakes, and truckloads of fertilizer. Now, as for the people who cause problems for society to deal with, we should just give them money, because they are obviously "disenfranchised". We shouldn't deal with their mental illness or any of the other myriad issues that cause people to behave this way, because that would take time, and it would shift the focus of the agenda, which cannot be tolerated.

If I can't cross the street when I see a White woman walking in my direction, then I make sure that I get as far over to the side of the sidewalk that is away from her. you may have noticed women reacting when you walk by them, absolutely true. What you haven't noticed is that most women will react the same to any man, regardless of color, when they are alone. You may have attributed it to color, but it's really because of your gender and the way you're dressed. A white male in casual clothing is more threatening than a black man in a suit.
