'Big jolt' as two planes clip wings at Miami airport

Two planes clipped at Miami International Airport Thursday, but there were no injuries from the incident, a MIA spokeswoman said.

An inbound Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340 arriving from Buenos Aires clipped an outbound Air France Boeing 777 that was parked at the gate, said Maria Elena Levrant of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Air France Flight 695 was preparing to depart with 350 passengers for Paris.

"It was just like a big jolt, and then shaking, and then it stopped," passenger Bente Densen said.

Looking out their windows, the passengers saw part of their plane's wing destroyed. Emergency crews flooded the scene.

The Aerolineas Argentinas aircraft was taxiing to a gate when the collision occured in the ramp area near Gate H-10 at 5 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

The flight to France was cancelled.

"They didn't send nobody to tell us something. We're just standing here and waiting and waiting and waiting," Valentino Hutu said.

Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 1304 had 240 passengers on board.

Levrant said the planes did not touch each other at a high speed. Passengers said they heard and felt quite an impact, however.

"Boom. We knew something happened," Teva Benshlomo said.

The Air France passengers were going to be put on a different flight going to France, Levrant said.

Some people played games to pass the time, while employees rushed to try and figure out how to get the hundreds of passengers where they wanted to go.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, Levrant said.

The airport set a record for the most passenger and cargo traffic last year, with 39.5 million passengers and 2.1 million tons of cargo.

Just last month, a Spirit Airlines aircraft clipped a parked US Airways jet at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

That is one expensive fender bender.

Even low cost cars today can park themselves. It seems like that same technology could save some serious coin at airports.

Just sayin...

Collide?? It just was clipping wings. I love how the news uses such BIG words. Maybe its the exagerated media thats part of this countries problem.

Collide was maybe a bit much, but they were damaged enough that they weren't able to fly.

Eventually these dumb dicks will discover the twenty dollar wing tip camera. Start with the A380 before the next hit.

Scare Bus was upset that Boeing made more aircraft than they did during 12012...

With composite wings and other components, a MINOR incident is BIG BUCKS. The MAJOR problem is the undetectable damage done to the visibly undamaged adjacent parts and major structures...

Ask any Vette owner...

That is why you are required to have wing walkers. Where were they?

  • 4 votes
Reply#2 - Fri Jan 18, 2013 9:52 AM EST

Wing walkers are not required at big airports as you suggest. As a pilot, I'd guess the A340 probably strayed from the center line on the taxiway while moving and got too close to the parked 777's tail. This has happened on several occasions in the last few years.

So the headline says "Two jets collide at Miami airport"

You read the article to find out that one plane clipped wings with another parked airplane at low speed.

I think that's called sensationalizing to get you to read the article.

No kidding! The headlines are getting a little out of hand when it comes to grabbing your attention. Yesterday I read one that said, "Major breakthrough in search for cancer cure" only to find that statistically, cancer deaths are on the decline; no actual new discovery or anything of the sort. Misleading is hardly the word.

Yeah, it could have said they "touched", but that would have probably set the SNL Church Lady off.

54Buick--MSN is notorious for sucking you into an article by titilating headlines. They'll say "All star MLB player dies" (and I'm a decades long baseball fan) and when you click on, you don't even recognize the name. Ditto 'TV stars', 'movie stars' etc.

Where were the Airport Police, at the time of this "collision"?

Shouldn't his license be suspended, until after the investigation

determines "fault"? No wonder the "checked baggage fees"

have been put in place? We are paying for their stupidity,

and for mechanics who can't even anchor the new seats properly.

Why doesn't the FAA FINE these carriers for emotional distress

and delaying the passengers and the inconvenience they suffer?

Time for a Class Action lawsuit. When Pilots have to pay, out of

their own pockets, they will use more care, when they taxi along

the runway. No excuse, for inattention, when 350 souls on board

put their lives in your hands!

You are wrong, relaxed people do post in bold when they want to emphasize a point. Doesn't mean one is angry just because one emphasizes.

I wonder if there was any fuel spilled as isn't the fuel tanks located in the wings on all of these planes?

This applies to both of the planes, it could have been one horrible accident if a tank were ruptured during all this with 490 people between the two planes.

Sure glad no one was hurt and at least this is a break from the news on the Boeing 787 dream-liner since its been grounded.

There used to be a bar down Red Road from the airport called the 95th Aero Squadron that had a timer on the wall for the pilots so they could pound down drinks right to the legal time limit - is it still there? And were either of these pilots there?
