Obama: National Day of Service 'is really what America is about'

Americans join in with President Barack Obama to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by volunteering on the National Day of Service. NBC News' Ron Mott reports.

During the whirlwind weekend to mark the end of the his first term and the start of his second, President Obama, joined by first lady Michelle Obama, began Saturday's National Day of Service participating in an elementary school makeover project in Washington, D.C., along with approximately 500 volunteers.

Obama said the turnout across the country for the day's events, leading up to a national holiday to honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., indicated a "huge hunger on the part of young people to get involved and to get engaged."

“This is really what America is about, this is what we celebrate," Obama said while speaking at Burrville Elementary. "This inauguration, it’s a symbol of how our democracy works and how we peacefully transfer power, but it should also be an affirmation that we’re all in this together, and we’ve got to look out for each other, and we’ve got to work hard on behalf of each other.”

Michelle Obama said the National Day of Service should be a symbol of the kind of work that needs to be done for the next four years and beyond.

“For all the young people and we’ve got a lot of young people…we’re passing the baton onto you all, so the goal is that as you make your way through life, who are you pulling up behind you? And as long as you’re pulling somebody up behind you you’re doing the right thing.”

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, were also on hand to serve.

“Those who serve our men and women in uniform, our wounded warriors, our veterans and our first responders – they give so much of themselves – and for us, it’s our obligation to give back,” Jill Biden said Saturday in a tent on the National Mall. “I hope this is just the first of many of the days that you all volunteer this year and serve your community and our country is something we can do every day all the time for the rest of our lives.”

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama paint a bookshelf at Burrville Elementary School in Washington, D.C., on the National Day of Service on Saturday, January 19 2013.

Also participating in the day's events were celebrities, musicians and television personalities, including Ben Folds, Star Jones, Chelsea Clinton and Eva Longoria.

Obama started the day of service in 2009 and said he hopes his initiative will become a tradition for future presidents.

“America’s never been about what can be done for us; it’s about what can be done by us together,” Obama said on Jan. 4, in a White House press release.

“Inaugurations are about more than just celebrating, they’re about coming together to make our country a better place,” Obama said in a video message encouraging people to sign up to serve their communities on Saturday.

Thousands of volunteers in all 50 states are slated to participate this year.

  • In Washington, D.C., volunteers will prepare more than 10,000 care packages for soldiers, veterans and first responders.
  • In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and city agencies will be engaging in service projects in communities affected by Superstorm Sandy.
  • Volunteers who signed up in California will give food and winter coats to the homeless.
  • In Chicago, service members will gather at Navy Pier to write letters and put together care packages for service members overseas.
  • Sixty-two AmeriCorps members in Oklahoma will travel to a neighborhood once segregated by Jim Crow laws to repair homes for low-income families.

Steve Kerrigan, president and CEO of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, said the day of service makes the inauguration “truly a national celebration.”

The president will officially be sworn in for his second term at noon on Sunday in a private ceremony at the White House, shortly after Biden. He’ll take the oath of office again on Monday before hundreds of thousands of onlookers on the National Mall, followed by a parade and formal balls in Washington.

President Obama encourages everyone to sign up and serve as part of the National Day of Service on Jan. 19, 2013.

Say all you want, but this is a very cool, down to Earth President and First Lady we will probably ever have in American history...

JFK came close, but some say he was a little arrogant, Jackie Kennedy was genuine

How can you say this is a PR stunt when this guy used to be a community organizer?

Community organizers never seek the limelight; they are genuine unlike the Bushes and the Romney's with silver spoons in their mouths...

Enjoy while it lasts haters...

PHOTO OPP!!!!!

I see that this story also includes a video link where you can watch CELEBRITIES doing some charity work as well. Good for them...but I do not believe that very many of us are naive enough to believe that they are doing this for nothing more than out of the goodness in their heart and out of a strong desire to help those less fortunate. Call me a cynic, but if you are being honest with yourself you KNOW what I am saying is true. Let's lay our cards on the table...their agents called them to tell them that he/she has a tremendous photo opportunity for them which will help their public image. How can you tell which celebrities are doing charity work FOR NO OTHER REASON than from a desire to help those less fortunate, from those who are looking for a photo opp? Ironically (and rightly so), by definition, you can only tell which ones are looking for a photo opp because they are the ones who will be in the photos and videos that you see on-line, on TV, in newspapers and in magazines. The others you will not know about, and that is just the way they want it. I APPLAUD THEM!!!

Not to mention the patriot act. Bush Jr still takes the cake.

I wonder how many of those being supported by entitlements (i.e. hardworking American citizens taxes) are participating in this "day of service". It does, after all, require fat a$$es to move off the sofa and exert some type of physical energy. MUCH easier to just let the others do it. Or better yet, collect entitlements AND be a recipient of a day of service project. Yeah....that's the ticket.

divided, and the expenditures for the first family out of tax payers' hands is still less than half that of the bush administration. And the tax payers are suffering because the business owners in this country became greedy and abandoned the "business is a family" mentality and stopped reinvesting in the economy which made them great. You wouldn't be suffering at all had all parties involved simply remembered the idea of patriotism.

Who cares how cool a president is when real unemployment is over 14%, our national debt is over $16T and there is a potential second recession coming. A photo-op with President Obama and Michelle impersonating a couple who claims to care about children is only food for Low Information voters.

"America’s never been about what can be done for us; it’s about what can be done by us together,” Obama said on Jan. 4, in a White House press release."

Ahhh yes......a statement Obama made while in Hawaii, from his NEW HOME (shhhh its a secret) while on their Multi-Million dollar Vacation paid for by Homeless taxpayers. Yep Barack you put it so well...."America’s never been about what can be done for us" spoken like a true Coward from his Hawaiian Home to his Low Information Voters.

Michelle nearly topped that statement: "“For all the young people and we’ve got a lot of young people…we’re passing the baton onto you all, so the goal is that as you make your way through life, who are you pulling up behind you? And as long as you’re pulling somebody up behind you you’re doing the right thing.”

What is Michelle passing to our youth? She is passing $6 Trillion in new debt today and she is on a trajectory to pass $12 Trillion total in 8 years, more than doubling the debt of every President combined before Barack. Low Information Voters fall for it, but not the rest of us who hold a job.

I guess I did not read the right papers or watch the right news programs or listen to the right radio stations. This is the 1st that I had heard about this and certainly would have tried to put something together or get involved in an already-organized event. Oh well, next year :-) I would like to leave the politics and other criticism out donating our time to help others.

It's sad to see how the commentary on a story about the National Day of Service brings out the absolute worst in so many people.

"Oh well, next year", ... seriously?

How about today? How about tomorrow? How about every day? Do you (do we) really need an engraved invitation to some already-organized event? Isn't there someone in your own neighborhood who could use a helping hand?

If we think the point of this it to do something for our fellow Americans, for our country, for our fellow citizens of the world ...on just this one, specific, designated day of the year and then go back to thinking of only ourselves the rest of the year, ...then we have completely missed the point of "National Day of Service."

"Why always with this bigotry crap? Tell me what he has done to improve this country. It has never been so divided as it is now.If he was a CEO the stockholders would have fired him a long time ago."

    .

Your supposition fails the logic test, and your blame is misdirected. If your complaint is that we are "divided," take an introspective look in the mirror at your own reflection.

If you want to end the divisiveness, stop personally contributing to and fueling the division with your own choice of words.

We are "divided" because millions of Americans consciously choose, with each new day, to question and seek to rhetorically invalidate the election of this President of the United States; a person who was elected twice by more than a 51% "majority" of the voters; the first time that has happened in two generations, 56 years ago in the 1956 reelection of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

We are "divided" because millions of Americans consciously choose, with each new day, to divide us with their immoderate and uncivil rhetoric.

We are "divided" because millions of Americans consciously choose, with each new day, to refuse to look past their own hyper-partisanship even long enough to embrace the message of a "National Day of Service" without using it as just another vehicle for vitriol, condemnation, derision and insults directed at the President and First Lady of the United States. Read this thread, as example.

If your complaint is that we are "divided," then stop dividing us. Start here. Start now. "Civility, pass it on."

Obama's Soviet Comrades would be proud! Contrary to what Obama and the libs would have you believe, this country has been the greatest on Earth, not because of service to others, but because of the opportunity to not be in need of being serviced by others. Yes, the US has been the most generous nation on Earth. But, it isn't because of government demanding it, but because government has gotten out of the way so that people will have enough to voluntarily be generous. Obama and the libs seem to miss the fine technicalities of the facts. Of course, it is there missing that fine technicality that is the difference between struggling like Cuba and Russia and prosperity like the US. And yes, this is a simple fact that is easy to prove. Who goes to Russia, Cuba or any socialist country seeking "opportunity?" When you become socialist, the only generosity of the people is forced on them at the end of the barrel of a gun. It is funny though, in order for a lib to win election, they have to lie. How many libs would get elected if they came out and campaigned saying: If you have money, I'm going to take it from you and give it to those who don't have money. If you don't work, you will be taken care of. If you do work, remember, the money you make isn't yours. You only get to keep what I say you can keep."

And the difference between that and "you didn't build that" is?

Would you like to explain why a socialist would wish to bail out the large corporations with the TARP program, stimulate the CAPITALIST economy and save the automobile industry? You are unbelievably gullible to fall for the right-wing media message.

The "you didn't build that" remark was an out of context remark from a statement Mr. Obama made about the infrastructure of the United States. It's easy to get people like you to believe what they want you to believe because you are a willing dupe ...... a rube ....... a water-carrier for the anti-Obama cause. I do my National Day of Service 365 days a year!

I've taken care of my elderly parents, my spouse's parents, providing for them, giving money to our family who are in need, I make others happy, visit the terminally ill and go to funerals, sick people at home, I take care of my own family, my spouse working his "a----------" off just to keep his job, and pay the mortgage on time.

Give to others, while others should give back. That's my Motto. It's a 2 way street.

What we need is a government and politicians that want to do the job they were hired for every day of the year. There should be no "out of session" anything. It should be that the government (elected officials) are on the job every day. We need a whole new government.

Without open honest freedom, is it really freedom or just stifling a country into submission?

@united we stand, I live in MN, generally one of the more educated states in American, education has nothing to do with racism, that would be like saying because you are wealthy you are a successful person?

I hope you are not saying people with an education are better people than non-educated people. Just my personal opinion on this one, some of the dumbest and most raciast people I've met have been highly educated people, it doesn't matter your class or financial stature.

Racism is a monster that will never die just like class warfare as long as the world is based on money, you are going to have people at the top and people at the bottom, generally the people at the top do not like the people at the top and vice-versa. Like I said just because you don't hear about it that much anymore, like just our freedom's most of these causes are generally unspoken anymore. The happy, happy PC world would like you to believe that racism doesn't exsist wouldn't it? Hmm..... maybe there is something to that.

Wow King Fish (more like jester but why split hairs), how arrogant and blatantly stupid of you. My husband and I both hold degrees in social service/psychology and spend the majority of our time helping and giving back all while raising six children who also help and give back and would it surprise you to know that what we do does not pay us enough to not live paycheck to paycheck? We rent a house that is falling apart, have one car (2003 Ford Focus, not a BMW), only my husband has health insurance which is not even good insurance, we cannot afford vacations, and we were both seriously injured in October when a young man ran a stop sign and totaled our other car (2004 Mustang) that we still owe money for. I have $14, 206 dollars in medical bills, $4000 of which is my responsibility and yet I have received no actual treatment for any of the problems such as the TBI, crushed knee, 2 Herniated discs, and part of my cerebellum that is hanging down into my spinal canal. And we get $255.00 a month in food stamps. Does that make us welfare trash as you insinuated by your ignorant comments? Do you really believe that everyone that receives any government assistance is useless or lazy? Frankly "king", you need to step down off your throne and stop being self-righteous and blind to the real world. I am not going to jump up and down with pride simply because our President and Vice-President get off their bums and pretend to care about what real citizens are dealing with every day. A National Day of Service is nothing more than lip service. People need help every day, not one day. We have dedicated our lives to serving others and still do not earn a decent living wage not unlike many of our fellow Americans. If you are so well off that you do not need any help good for you, but how dare you criticize other people, like Dale, for expecting their government to actually do something productive every day, rather than simply posing for some cameras in yet another futile attempt to make honest, hard-working people believe that they really give a crap about the real problems plaguing our country. The only thing you are king of sir, is your narrow-minded, small world that so obviously consists of petty, one-sided, and disingenuous thinking that it serves to do nothing more than redefine the word "pretentious" in such a manner that one could only hope that you find yourself in need one day and the only help you will receive will be the ridiculous ramblings of a flippant and consciously ignorant fool such as yourself. But, in all reality, you are probably not even intelligent enough to understand a thing about what I have just said, so that hope will be as wasted on you as it is on our government ever truly serving the needs of real people.

Unlike you I don't hold degrees in social service/psychology, all that is, to most people an over educated social worker who can't make a living working in the real world but has to work for the government to look down their nose at others less educated or with social problems and hand them the food stamps, phones and welfare. In my business I give back every day. So I do have a right to say what I did, because the people I help can't get what 47% of you get handed to you every day, the only work they ever did was put their hand out when they want more, now we have a special for it. Combine this with all the new ideas from business leaders on making people work into older age. Time America uses some logic on the retirement transition, we have been only experimenting with retirement in modern times for what 50 years? Before then, old folks relied only on their savings and properties to survive, maybe their family too if their kids could afford helping them. So in 50 years what have we learned? Least logical thing I see is that employers don't have systems to make the workforce supply of right folks transition smoother. Older workers which in blue collar jobs is around 50 from hard labor tasks, should be given choice to cut hours back and focus on training young workers to master their jobs. With their increased free hours, the older workers could do more volunteer work like tutoring students, coaching, parks maintenance, museum guides, etc. My late father even said to me that he could have easily worked part-time up to 70 after he retired at 62 from full-time job (was professonal/white collar and not much physical challenge in career other than headaches or stress). Systems that give old timers part-time work at their current jobs will also open up many jobs for young folks who need it more than them to get started in career and feeding families.

Great ideal.... Lets take more jobs from the young struggling families and we can even save the companies billions on insurance costs....Old part timers don't qualify for company paid insurance...Oh yes the top 1% of the rich in this country would love that.... Why the companies could actually afford to hire more of these old people and lay off more of the workers that they have now...

Why, it will only be about 20 years until more jobs start to become available as the old people die off.

                #6.1 - Sat Jan 19, 2013 1:07 PM EST

No, talking about starting a system of early SEMI-Retirement incentives which may get people working into older age if they like working say 20 hours/week until they hit 70 if not too physically demanding, even if they started that schedule at 55. All those business folks and commentators want cold turkey changes for hosing the next generation of retirees. I say phase those benefit's age threshold increases in slowly at the same time giving more older workers the chance to lower working hours gradually which probably will prolong their workable ages because you did not bust their butts working full time until they hit the wall and fall over the day they traditionally retired at. Basically they work about the same amount of total time in their lives they just start cutting back hours say in their late 50's and can ramp them up in times the company needs short term increase output, etc. Just not right to have kids who are ready to work especially after paying tens of thousands in college just sitting for a while unemployed waiting for slots from the old folks retiring. Of course that means we are expecting businesses to keep their factories and workplaces going here and not moving out of country....

I blame a government for not enforcing our immigration laws, I blame a government for not only not doing everything it can to deter illegal immigration but instead gives these freeloaders government subsidies in the form of housing, food, utility money, the additional cost to our primary education system to hire bilingual teachers and now for giving these criminals instate tuition at colleges and universities.

Now as far as Obama and his National day of service, This is just another chance to get his face in the media, many of us do service to our communities on a daily and weekly basis, We do not ask to be singled out for media attention but we do it because we care about our neighbors and the sick and elderly, Unlike these media wh0re pretenders that just do it because they think it makes them look good.

The 545 elected officials that run this country of 300 million are to blame. It is their fault alone as to why the country is in the state it is in. Too many special interests, too much partisanship, no desire to do what their constituents want them to do. What we really need to do is vote out all incumbents next election and start over.

Oh but I do..........before I retired, I did everything possible to insure the people I hired for my company were legally eligible. But at the same time, the illegals would not be here if the border was secure thereby temping and causing businesses to exploit them and screw the legal Americans.

Sow, that is a pretty broad statement and really should read "no desire to do what I want them to do". If a man or woman get reelected, then you have to assume that the majority of his or her constituents strongly feel the man or woman is doing the job to which they were first elected.

Obama admin. deported a little over 400,000 illegals in 4 years compaired to about 150,000 in 8 years under Bush II.

The Obama administration manipulated the numbers to make it look like they were deporting more, Obama has included those turned back at the border as being deported, That was something that has never been done before, The actual numbers of deportees is less under Obama when you subtract the numbers of those turned back at the border.

Some of it has to do with Mexico and some other Central American countries not improving their standards for their poorest over the past few decades and providing enough jobs for them there, pretty sure they would rather live in their own country if they could have survived there. We have been putting a bandaid over the wound that is not healing in fact probably getting worse if more poor come accross because they can't survive decently in Mexico. There are probably some businesses in America that want it to stay that way so they can get real cheap labor from illegals forever, and in the business world some owners/managers can use anything as an excuse to lower their labor costs supposedly due to competition and maybe some greed.

Royal...since the Obama Admin has changed the definition of "deportation" to include anyone turned away at the border, of course Obama's deportation numbers are higher.

The problem is, that with his out of control spending and taxing, there are few people left with time enough or resources enough to help like they used to help. They work till they drop just to make their own ends meet. I have crossed the bridge; I am now solidy in the mindset that anything...anything, he is for, I am against. I have given him the benefit of the doubt for 4 years; I have set the bar very low for him and he has still failed miserably. The only time I will cheer for him is when he is gone!

So the President will be sworn in twice which means he will not have to be sworn in again for 8 more years.

"The president will officially be sworn in for his second term on Sunday in a private ceremony at the White House. He’ll take the oath of office again on Monday before hundreds of thousands of onlookers on the National Mall, followed by a parade and formal balls in Washington."

Like the first one, his "private" ceremony will probably NOT use the Bible, just as in the first time. The Bible was used only in the first ceremony, which was "goofed up" and had to be "redone" privately - with NO Bible.

Only the Democrats could come up with this idea. Most americans already do service for the local communities and support charities where they live.

We the people don't need government telling us that we must do service to others when it is government who should be doing the service at a responsible price and the government must become more responsible with other people's money no matter how they get it.

You may not see it, and definitely don't understand it, but working with others towards a common goal can unite people in other ways. But Bushes vacations cost the tax payers only 1/4 of what the Royal Family spends.

Bushes vacations were at his ranch in Crawford, TX he owned and payed for BEFORE becoming president, and refurbished it to use it as an administration work site, Why does not Obama go to his home in Chicago for vacation?

Why would he go home to Chicago - they have a murder problem.....it throws in his face the fact that tighter gun control doesn't work. Not to mention he doesn't want all the hood rats at his door asking where their free stuff is - it is a vacation after all.

To Elvis-362920 How many times do you hear people say, "You know it's just to warm and sunny around here in Hawaii, I have an idea, let's go to Chicago, I hear it's really cold and rainy. It will be a great time ".

Charitable giving, and community service are soon to be a thing of the past.

Not sure about Martin Luther King Jr. I know one thing, he should not have been murdered. I didn't care for him that much but there are a lot of people I don't care for, I just accept them. Maybe they don't like me. BUT, and it's a BIG ONE, I don't like OLE TRACTOR JAW Michelle or her husband, the MUSLIM PUNK and LIAR, Barry Soetoro Hussein. They are both RACISTS. Not doubt about it. I am an AMERICAN and hispanic, second. I wouldn't think of voting for a PUNK like Osama Obama, the EVIL ONE. SCREW him and his oh so, UGLY wife. Talk about lipstick on a PIG. WOW. My name is, LARRY VELASCO, AMERICAN.

People who celebrate MLK don`t really know who he was. Martin Luther King Jr. WAS a communist. He was documented at several meetings with groups whose stated goals were communism and the undermining of the U.S. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Communist! Martin Luther King was affiliated with 60 Communist Fronts. King led a bizarre sex life which included acts of shocking perversion. On Jan. 31, 1977 Coretta Scott King obtained a federal court order sealing for 50 years, 845 pages of FBI records about her husband, "because its release would destroy his reputation!"

The U. S. Congressional Record of March 30, 1965 quotes Karl Prussian, an FBI counterspy inside the Communist Party as swearing: "At all of these (Communist Party) meetings Rev. Martin Luther King was always set forth as the individual to whom Communists should rally around... King has either been a member of, or willingly accepted support from over 60 Communist fronts... King accepted support from communist fronts , individuals and organizations which espouse communist causes."
