I know this will raise a whole @!$%#e storm, but there used to be a thing called natural selection. Those that do eat, those that do not starve to death. There used to be diseases that would contain population, but now we have a drug industry making sure that can't happen. I agree with most of what you state. And yes, to me life is precious, however, to me, unless you are a stand up citizen who works for the betterment of society instead of tearing it down, yours is not. And in reality, if you are not, it is statistically proven that neither will your children be.

The fact of the matter is that is the opposite direction we are heading. I agree with birth control. It should be free, birth control, abortions and sterilization. As it is now we are perpetuating the breeding of poor. And the fact of the matter is that the poor are the majority of the crime in society.

The average middle and upper class has 2.3 children. The lower classes have 5 or 6 with multiple partners that are not around to educate or pay for their progeny. Extrapolate that out ten generations. We have created a world where those that "do" pay for those "that refuse to" and get paid not to.

In order to have constructive goals there would have to be a consensus. First, that there is a problem, and secondly, a solution. As it is now, we just throw money at the problem so they don't break into our homes and rob and kill us in our sleep. We spent a trillion dollars last year on welfare and healthcare for welfare. That is $3,300 for every man, woman, and child in the US. Throwing more money at the problem will only make matters worse.

The key word is rate. That means number divided by something, presumably number of crimes per 100k people. That is because some smart people already realized the same problem you pointed out, that the size of the population matters. And corrected for it.

Hence if there are 12x more white people than asian people, you'd be as likely to find to find a criminal in a group of 48 asian people as you would in a group of 12 white people. Alternatively, in a population of 576 white people and 48 asian people, if there is one crime commited by an asian, there is likely 48 crimes commited by the white people.

Blacks commit violent crime 6 times more often than whites, and murder 10 times more often. Blacks also murder whites more than 20 times as often as whites murder blacks.

Chief Serpas, probably without intending to do so, explains in the last sentence of the story just why all the huffing and puffing in DC about guns is likely to achieve nothing positive. It's our culture that has decayed. Serpas says it's a shame young men don't heed the words of MLK. But why should they? The "adults" supposedly running the nation don't seem to heed MLK's words either. Do we judge a man by the color of his skin, or the content of his character?

And you can expand the question to cover all sorts of other situations--women, handicapped people, blue-collar workers, etc--and still find yourself wondering when we will begin to see people for what they are rather than for how they look. I remember going to high school in Chicago in the 80's when states were making MLK's birthday a holiday. I remember Illinois making it a holiday. I remember on this holiday my Black *ss was in school!!!! No my school wasn't a predominantly white school with a white principal. Quite the contrary!! It was an all Black school with a Black principal in the ghetto on the westside of Chicago. We would have an assembly to celebrate MLK, but our principal who marched with MLK would tell us that he thought Dr. King would rather us celebrate his birthday in school receiving an education, instead of a day off watching tv or getting into all kinds of mischief. I can't help but to wonder with a heavy heart, just how many of the youth today really know who MLK is and what he stood for? I wonder how many older people for that matter know. I live in DC. We have a MLK and a Malcolm X. They intesect in a section of town that was known for gangs and violence long before they named the streets, And BTW, contrary to what many believe, there are plenty of neighboorhoods in DC both predominately white and black which are safe. The intersection of malcom x amd mlk just is not one of them
