None of the injuries was considered life-threatening, officials said.
The incident took place at the intersection of LaSalle Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, police said.
Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas, who was among those who responded to the scene, told NBC station WDSU that six teenage boys or young men were outside a small grocery when a late-model white sedan drove past, with shots fired from inside the car.
The car then sped off.
A New Orleans Police Department official told the station that a surveillance camera captured the incident and that video recordings were being reviewed.
The violence happened shortly after New Orleans' annual parade honoring slain civil rights activist and nonviolence standard-bearer Martin Luther King Jr. passed through the neighborhood.
The irony was not lost on police or residents.
"It's ridiculous this violence happened on this day," one witness told WDSU.
"It's the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr.," Serpas told the Times-Picayune, which also reported that the shooting did not appear to be linked to the parade.

Sad irony.
Sounds like an old 1920's movie where a black sedan would pull up and machine gun some mobsters on a sidewalk. The 5 victims that were shot probably crossed some people. They must learn civility. Blacks decided during and after the "we-shall-overcome" days that they were going to "get whitey" for all the injustices perpetrated on them. Never mind that non-violence sh*t. Now 50 years later with most of those who suffered now dead, the vengeance is directed at ANYBODY including their own.
So do we get a 6 day holiday now?
The guns are no more to blame in drive by shootings than the cars.
The problem is that politicians spend billions of dollars on wasteful legislation that would accomplish nothing instead of spending those billions of dollars putting tens of thousands of extra police officers on the streets. That money could also be used to keep criminals in prison instead of letting them out after a few years to keep causing violence.
It's not a gun problem, it's a human behavior problem and a lack of accountability problem.

Happens a thousand times a year in different cities across the country, what makes this one newsworthy. Just because this one was on MLK drive on MLK Day...if it was James Earl Ray day they would still be gangbanging, they don't know or care what day it is! It was probably over the color of their jackets or the shoes they were wearing or drugs. These kind of low lifes aren't even part of our society. They are outside the realm of civility and part of an underground society that most of us know nothing about. They are know as criminals and will get theirs one way or the other. They'll die on the street or rot in jail.

This is not to be meant in the least bit racist, but it's the truth. Everyone knows that Martin Luther King Blvd. in any city in America is always crime-ridden. I have no idea why this is, but it's true. Even when I lived in Portland, Oregon - one of the safest cities in the country - even MLK Blvd. there was scary.

There are those out there who call themselves or are called activists or community leaders. Have they no influence on these hapless kids? Why not, oh actitvist or community leader, have these kids rid themselves of drugs and guns and take advantage of the huge amounts thrown at them by the state?

We all know Martin Luther King Boulevard is a hangout for white rednecks. Just like the DC Sniper and the Atlanta Strangler, stopped and released multiple times because the cops and city officials were determined to catch a disgruntled white guy.
