A 12-year-old girl was killed in an 87-car pile-up on an Ohio highway on Sunday after a burst of snow hit the area. The accident shut down the highway, I-275 near Cincinnati, for seven hours, WCPO.com reported.
The icy roads, brought on so immediately, were likely to blame, sending 60 cars and 16 tractor-trailers spinning and slamming into each other on the highway just after 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, Reuters reported.
"Eighteen years on patrol, and I've never seen anything like it," Hamilton County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Knapp told Reuters.
Twenty others from other cars were also sent to hospitals.
Raw footage from the accident shows a line of cars along the highway, all stopped and facing in random directions. Crews used hydraulic rescue tools – better known as “jaws of life” – to free drivers and passengers from three cars. They found several cars trapped under semi-trucks.
The Cincinnati Enquirer described the scene as vehicles crunched “like an accordion.” The Enquirer put the number of cars in the wreck at 87; other sources were more conservative. Reuters counted 76 cars in the crash.
At issue were the icy roads and limited visibility. Scott Hickman, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, told the Enquirer that warm roads may have caused snow to melt and, as temperatures dropped, dangerously freeze again.
Bad weather caused other pile-ups over the holiday weekend. Twenty-four hours after the major crash, at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, 50 cars collided on Interstate 75, although there were no fatalities. Minor injuries were reported in a 13-car pile-up near Mansfield, Ohio.
I can't believe this happened in a state where people know how to drive on winter roads. If this happened in the Southeast, all the graduates from the Politically Correct public school system would be posting how they know how to drive but no one else does.
Then you slow down or pull over. If I can't see I pull over not continue tailgaiting at 60 miles per hour. I see how recklessly people drive. I always keep a safe distance during a blizzard but many times someone is tailgaiting me by just a few inches.
Sounds like you never drove in a white-out. They hit very very fast. It's perfectly clear then you can't see anything. Like someone just tossed white paint on your windshield. How are you going to pull over when you can't see the road or you can't see that the guy in front of you has stopped? You can't even see the cars beside you.
Blizzards are a different animal all together. You know it's snowing hard from the beginning.
I've been in both and I'd rather drive a blizzard than a white-out anytime.
Since you idiots weren't there, picture driving down the highway and then having someone putting a hand on your face. The snow squall is a phenomon that happens quickly and without notice and is over just as quickly. Not to mention the ground temperature being so perfect that it instantly turned to ice. Then, just as the quickly as the squall passed the sun melted the ice off the road. This is known as a perfect storm! A child died here folks this has nothing to do with "Blue States" texting or tailgating. I defy you to experience the same thing my freind did yesterday!!!!! Why some people feel the need to spew crap that they have no knowledge of is beyond me. Find something better to do with your life!!!!
This girl was killed after she got out of the car and stood beside a wire fence in the medium. Another car hit the fence and snapped the wire. The wire recoiled back after breaking and hit the child. The lesson here is to stay in the car until the situation settles down, unless, of course, the car catches fire.
White out + Black Ice a very dangerous condition that can happen very quickly. Especially the black ice, having encountered it numerous times over the years. Black ice seems to occur almost instantaneously. One moment you are driving along, the next you are hanging on for deal life.
How stupid are people? Slow down idiots.
Tailgating kills.
A girl is dead because people are impatient.
Are all drivers this stupid in blue states?
Yep!
I wonder how many of those 87 drivers were texting or talking on cell phones.....

It didn't. Unless you qualify your statement with "some" or "most."
It was cause by fast moving snow squalls that cause white-out conditions catching drivers off guard.
