Bitter cold, high winds and snow to hit Northeast as Midwest shivers

Across the nation weather is colder than normal, creating icy roads, arctic wind chills and sub-zero conditions. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

Updated at 11 p.m. ET: Be jealous, Midwesterners and Northeasterners: On Tuesday, Phoenix broke a record with highs of 81 degrees. Wednesday's forecast calls for 82 with a smattering of clouds.

Meanwhile, the Midwest continues to shiver under some of its coldest weather in years, and New England braced for temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees including the wind chill factor and up to a foot of snow.

An “Alberta Clipper” drawing arctic air southward from Canada has brought gusty winds and snow to a long line of states atop the country from North Dakota to northern Maine, creating treacherous driving conditions.

Temperatures plummeted below zero by double digits in the western Great Lakes region and northern Maine, and dozens of degrees below zero when the wind chill was taken into account, according to the National Weather Service.

More from The Weather Channel

Parts of North Dakota, Minnesota and Maine were expected to see wind chills approaching 50 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service.

Major Great Lakes cities such as Chicago and Detroit struggled just to hit the teens Tuesday, and lake-effect snows were likely to continue in areas south of all five major lakes, Weather.com reported.

Cities along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C. had high temperatures only in the 20s Tuesday.

In New York, the peak of the “cold wave” were expected to chill the tri-state area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, as low temperatures plunged into the low single digits throughout the area, NBCNewYork.com reported.

Forecasters said wind chills below zero were possible for Wednesday morning, so it could feel like negative 25 degrees outside, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The cold weather has already been blamed for at least one death as vehicles crashed in difficult conditions.

In Ohio alone, at least three interstate pileups injured dozens and left a 12-year-old girl dead.

Parts of Connecticut were hit with snow, as were areas north of New York City and along the coast, according to NBCNewYork.com.

NBCConnecticut.com said most of the state got a coating of snow.

NBC 10 Philadelphia

A multiple-vehicle accident tied up the Strawberry Mansion Bridge in Philadelphia.

As a low-pressure system off the New England coasts pulls the cold blast eastward, northern Massachusetts and parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine could see up to a foot of snow, a difficult Tuesday morning commute and uncomfortable wind chills, The Weather Channel reported.

In Pennsylvania, icy roads caused by the rush of bitter wind contributed to accident after accident, along with road closures and warnings to drivers to stay home or be extremely careful, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

Though much of the snow is forecast to move out to sea by Tuesday afternoon, the cold weather doesn’t appear to be ready to leave.

High temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast appear set to remain below freezing -- in most cases in the teens or below --until the weekend at least, the weather service predicts.

NBC News staff writer Isolde Raftery contributed reporting.

I hope people will check on their neighbors and their loved ones to make sure they are OK in this cold weather. Hopefully in a couple of months we will see spring coming in, with warmer days and nights. Can hardly wait. Hate this 25 degree weather at night and only in the 40's during the day.

If it gets hot - climate change. If it gets cold - climate change. If it rains - climate change. If it DOESN'T rain - climate change. If ice melts - climate change. If ice FREEZES - climate change.

Seems to me the climate has been changing for thousands of years.

BTW, when Al Gore said in 1999 "Snowfalls are now just a thing in the past" was he intentionally not telling the truth or just doesn't know?

SallyAnn - We'll take the low of 25 and high of 40's right about now in MN. It was -17 air temp, who knows what the wind chill was at dawn here.

Having said that, we haven't had it this cold for a couple of years so I'm not really whining. Car starts, good furnace, etc ~ I have a feeling we'll survive.

This is just normal cold and Gee it's snowing go figure. Oh wait, it's that whole climate change thing causing it, right? That must what makes this news worthy. pffffft.

Ah, the changeability of weather. Weekend before last, here in Denver, it struggled to get up to 10 degrees on the day of the playoff game and went down to -12 at night. But the cold air gradually pulled away and went to New England. Supposed to get to 64 today and 67 tomorrow.

Frank-3784028, Even the low information liberal voters now know that global warming is a hoax. You can't slip in your inane comments about mini ice ages caused by global warming. You think you're being sly, but it's really disingenuous. Even some of the leading global warming alarmists have now said that they've looked everywhere ( as if it were hiding somewhere)and they couldn't find any evidence of warming. Most reputable scientists believe that we're now experiencing global cooling. It's more likely that all weather patterns are cyclical and man cannot change this one way or another. Food for thought Frank, If there is global warming and the seas are rising, why has Algore bought a mansion on a beachfront in California?

Global warming activists are like the weatherman who always says that there is a 50% chance of precipitation. He is always right! The same is true with the "Global Warming" fanatics. No matter what happens with the weather they MUST be right because they say so!

Here's the reality , to the proponents of Global Warming , if it was a balmy 60 degrees in Minnesota today they would say it was because of GW , when it's a frigid -60 degrees they say it's because of Global Warming. No matter what temperature occurs they claim it is evidence of GW. This is not science since in their eyes under no scenario can it be disproved. If we had definitive evidence of daily air temperature for the past 5000 years rather than only the past 100 or so years , it would be clear we are just experiencing normal fluctuations of weather.

I don't understand why this is news. It IS wintertime and in the winter it gets cold and we have snow. The parts of the country that are "making the news" have these conditions every winter and those that live in these climates should have taken the proper steps to survive. It's like the flooding in the spring--it happens every year, not news.

Living in NJ my whole life, honestly, this winter is nowhere near as bad as we've had. I remember in the 90's getting 2+ feet of snow in one shot. This winter we've only had one true snowfall and it accumulated a whopping 1.5 inches. Newsflash, we live in the North East, in winter it gets COLD here and in summer it gets hot and humid, that's nothing new. Neither was Sandy, the difference with Sandy wasn't it's strength, but how and where it hit land here in NJ.

Call in the Government, Barack will be there soon to rescue you! Hate to say it but mother nature change is really slow even with Al Gores help and the internet. Just declare a state of emergency and all will be well until next winter.....

Your first name suits you well. This is a weather story and yet, some fools are so full of hatred that they spew rather then sticking to the topic.
