Arctic air sends temperatures plummeting across much of US

In several areas of the country temperatures hovered around zero, but the coldest place being International Falls, Minn., where the temperature was -20 degrees. The conditions were especially difficult for those who work outside. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

A full two-thirds of the country was in the grips of a blast of cold Arctic air Wednesday with temperatures falling to some of the lowest marks in years and wind chills plummeting to dangerously low levels.

The nation’s capital is experiencing what could be its coldest stretch in almost 10 years, according to NBC Washington’s Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer, and brutally cold weather and snow continued to hit much of the Northeast and Great Lakes area.

In the D.C. area Wednesday morning, temperatures were between 16 and 21 degrees with single-digit wind chills, according to the National Weather Service.

Elsewhere in the Northeast and New England, the coldest air in two years has blanketed the area with subzero wind chills moving in, a stark contrast from the mild weather residents had been experiencing this winter.

In Maine, the arctic air mass settling over the state caused temperatures to drop nearly 75 degrees in one week – following record highs on Monday -- the Bangor Daily News reported.

Meanwhile the National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings Wednesday for as far south as Florida.

And in the Midwest Wednesday, very cold highs ranging from 10 degrees below zero to five degrees above were forecast from North Dakota to northern Wisconsin.

Temperatures are expected to linger in the mid-20s for the rest of the week, and a moderation of temperatures wouldn’t come until early next week.

The bitter weather has also brought with it some “impressive” snowfalls, according to Weather.com.

The airport in Erie, Pa., saw 16.3 inches of snow fall at the airport on Monday – the snowiest day there since Nov. 29, 1979, and making it snowiest January day on record. Other parts of the city saw up to 24 inches.

In New York state, Oswego County got up to 18 inches of snow Sunday through Monday morning, while 19 inches fell in Pulaski in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. Tuesday and Ripley got 24.8 inches over the two days to Tuesday morning.

And parts of Michigan saw 10 inches of snow in the 48 hours ending Tuesday morning. Conditions were milder in other parts of the U.S. with temperatures expected to hit the 30s and 40s from western Nebraska to southern Kansas, and record highs are predicted in the Western U.S.

Cold wave has much the nation shivering. NBC's Chric Clackum reports.

I wasn't debating that the NE is cold and my weather is normal...I was making a joke based off of comparison. I don't understand your comment...unless you are saying I should label my weather "normal?" Perhaps you were making a funny as well.

It's January and it's cold, the old ones called it "winter".......

But the leftwingnuts want a carbon tax, that will keep it from getting so cold in the dead of winter.

You can't argue climate change with idiots. Sure its a cold snap but still, we are seeing the warmest weather year after year. The oceans are warming, the ice is melting. Climate isn't a one week snapshot at a little piece of the globe. I am not a climate scientist but am in a scientific field. The number of scientists who believe in man made climate change as at least a significant portion of the problem is overwhelming. Not all scientists accepted that HIV caused AIDS, especially true 20 years ago and some still hold onto that (crazy religion trumps their science?) . You guys are idiots.

If global warming can cause extreme temperatures in both directions, perhaps then, as well, global cooling could do the same thing. It is most probable then, according to my computer models of the past 120 years out of the past 4 billion, that what we are experiencing is actually a new ice age that is causing a few years of extreme heating of the planet. In other words, the earth has a case of hypothermia, and if we don't soon start warming it up, it is going to get so hot that the glaciers will start advancing for sure into our crop and food producing zones. I am forming a new Global Hypothermia fighting organization and soon will be hoping to be flying to a city near you in my private jet to tell you about it and raise money.

Like the debate over Intelligent Design,
the controversy over global warming is being fought over in the
        popular media
even though the consensus of the scientists who are actually
researching climate change is that humans are having a greater impact on global
warming than natural sources. As a measure of the certainty of this, major
insurance companies are now revising their business projections to take
the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change into account.
(Insurance companies know very well how to make money on projections of real
future events and they are not going to be swayed by any so-called "propaganda
from tree-hugging environmentalists"—if the science conclusions are good enough
for the insurance companies, then you may want to think twice, three times, many
times, before discounting the IPCC conclusions.)

good for the first time since last february there weren't any left-wing bicycle-fanatics around blocking half of the lanne in the backroads. I don't care whether it's because of the colder weather or lance armstrong doing dope but either way I hope that both continue so i don't have to do any more hit and runs on these eco-goons who are so ignorant that they don't realize how much of a nuissance they are to people who actually live in the 22nd century.

there are studies that show riding a bike puts out more carbon than driving your car (assuming it's running well)

I want, just once, to nail one of the spandex-wearing morons. just enough to get their attention and get them out of my lane.

I've done it before so I can tell you from experience that it feels really reallly good to do but obviously only if you get away with it so it depends on how recognizable your car is and you also don't want to hit them directly because it'll leave too many marks if they like roll over the hood of your car and the bike gets crushed underneathe your fender. what you want to do is clip them with your mirror so that it doesn't slow you down and then you can just buff out and mark that it makes when you get home. it sends them flying if you're going anything over 25 miles an hour and get a decent connection and i promise that you'll never see them blocking any of your lane with their two-wheel frustration-macchines any more.

            #30.2 - Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:35 AM EST

Most bike riders get in their vehicle and travel a few hundred miles to a pristine valley where they unload their bikes and then ride in the road holding up all of the locals as they try to get to work and pay their bills. Seattle-Francisco people are the most notorious for this, and take their smug and smog with them to the Methow Valley, killing hundreds of deer and animals on the highway in their ignorant selfishness to "be one with nature".

More people have been killed by trying to have sexual intercourse with a horse than from your global warming terrorist-threat so why don't you just quiet the hell down and buy a coat with the money you save by not paying your global-warming cuhurch dues and buying all of those hippy bumper stickers and crap? you people are the worst of the worrst and i hope that when you finally do wake up you apologize for disrupting the public-peace for so long.

Christ on a crutch, it's January, which means winter here, and in the Southern Hemsphire, it's summer. We normally have cold weather in winter, and we have warm weather in summer. Big F ing deal. If you like winter, enjoy it, if you don't, in several months summer will be here.

Just be glad you are alive and able to enjoy each day, regardless of weather, cold, rain, snow, ice, or whatever. Enjoy life.

Don't tell people who are suffering from things like hypothermia and frostbite to just "wait until a few months when summer will be here" because that does absolutely nothing for them since they don't have access to time machines or the same medical-drug drugs that you obviosuly have to be pumping into your body on a hourly basis to say insesnsitive crap like that. respect those who are going through a scary time and if not then don't come on here and tell them how to deal with their pains, people like you are unbelievably uncivizilzed its rediculouss.

Global warming is alright with me. Yes I use solar power with 2 EV's. But not because I try to avoid global warming which is a good thing if you live up north or in the mountains.

Rather it's because eventually we have to find alternate energy to avoid running out and bankrupting our children's future when there is no more oil and gas left to exploit.

Mankind needs to stop looking at things in terms of the next pay check and begin thinking long term (tens of thousands of years) and build a future for our descendants.

There is simply too many people on this planet with a 'me me me' attitude starting with Obama who takes from programs he has no business doing in order to pay for things to make himself look good at the expense of future generations.

We know this simply isn't true. There is no way for it to be cold and snowy. It goes completely against what they have been telling us for years. The Arctic is melting, it is too warm for snow and ice. Since there is no cold in the Arctic there is no way for cold air to come down from the Arctic.

Meanwhile Russia has seen -50, China is having its coldest winter in over 30 years, etc.

Looks like somebody doesn't know how to spell "Arctic." In a headline, no less.
