I would imagine that the union contracts do not state that people get their pensions even if there are allegations of crimes or even convictions. If you want to make convicted criminals ineligible for their pensions I would think we would need to add language to contracts, not strip language out of the contract.

The way they actually handle it is a win-win-win: The school district wins because he's no longer employed there; the union wins because they can say that they protected the guy up until he retired, after which they have no further obligation; the teacher wins because he's getting a pension regardless of the outcome. In fact, the only losers are the taxpayers who have to fund this nonsense ..... and, of course, the kids and their families.

LAUSD is a typical example of our criminal government public education system. Only 52% of high school students graduate, of those that don't only 7% will eventually get a diploma. Only 33% are at grade level for English and 13% for Math. Only 29% of students pass A-G courses with a C grade or better.

There are more grim statistics for these poor children. This is the future of our great Republic, assuming of course they're not molested by their teachers first.

This is why only 39% of Americans are optimistic about our future according to a recent Gallup poll.

As for the subject in this story, if he is indeed guilty then there is no punishment too harsh for him but remember the man's family. It would be unjust to punish the spouse because of the actions of the other. Pension benefits are based on wages deferred which means that some of the money he earned while working was deferred into a pension plan. That's why a worker has what's called vested retirement rights after a few years. He has vested money into the retirement plan so it's his money to take out when he retires. Since the spouse is married to him she has the right to the money also. Don't believe me, just try to get a divorce and see if your spouse's lawyer doesn't attacks your future pension.

Actually Boeing for the first time asked it's subcontractors to create their own blueprints for the parts they built and THAT is a far more likely source of the problems. It already raised costs because the parts weren't fitting together correctly! They must have thought they ironed out the kinks but were wrong. The new models ALWAYS have problems to fix but it's worse than usual. Nobody can argue with that but you can't simply blame whatever suits your fancy (unions.) While it's true that Boeing outsourced more than ever and some people have criticized that the fact that they weren't given blueprints for the parts they manufactured is the more likely problem, not the outsourcing and certainly not the Boeing union.

You need to look into the diversion of funds by the executives of Hostess before you go blaming that union. The employees took a 30% paycut (this is before the one they most recently refused) that didn't prevent the bancruptcy and then the CEO's pay tripled and other executives' pay rose up to 80% RIGHT before bankruptcy, which has creditors asking questions. This isn't counting the pension money that was diverted to other areas without ever being repaid or the bonuses they're awarded as part of the bancruptcy process. The blame for their inability to sell junk food to Americans has been deftly shifted to the unions, whose members never get more than what executives agree to in their contracts. Don't forget that! Union members can't suddenly and arbitrarily triple their pay! At the very least don't you see the diversion of funds at that level as a theft against the shareholders? You don't have to be union-loving to have a problem with this but I doubt you did much research before forming an opinion.

How awful that another person, placed in a position of trust, has abused it and harmed more children. Of course, it will be where children are clustered. Where else can those who haven devious,sexual natures going to find large groups of children in which to find those groups of children most likely to be susceptible to being abused.

Those who seek to abuse a child in these large groups, don't just want ANY child. They target children who fit a type of personality which is less aggressive, less prone to complain or show resistance after a more timid advance is first tried.

Therefore, the predator can go through a group and select the ones more reserved and quiet, less apt to complain and cause an alarm to be raised. Which is why parents are told to teach their children to yell and kick, make noises, when someone touches them in a wrong way. To draw attention immediately to what is going on.

In the case of this teacher, of course he retires, thinking he will keep his pension after 39 years teaching. Getting fired would have voided it.But it is forfeited anyway. I wonder if he ever bothered to look up and educate himself on what happens to those who molest little children, in prison.

There is also something else I personally believe in. A scripture, Matthew 18:6 "But who so shall offend one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better that a millstone be hung about his neck and he be drown in the depths of the sea." I also believe, there will await such predators, justice beyond this life. What we do here, does echo into eternity.

Don't forget the home is the #1 place of danger for children. Most molestation (or other abuse) is committed by family members and family friends.

We need to educate our children very early about abuse so that they know when an adult is doing something that isn't appropriate, and they know we will believe them if they tell us about it. Children who resist molestation often manage to get out of the situation, but the poor things can't resist if they don't really know what is happening. Those who prey on children often groom them first, so the children trust them and like them or at least feel pressure to obey them. Molesters often pick kids who seem "alone" emotionally. If we begin talking to our kids about these things when they are very young (beginning with age-appropriate language) and keep talking as they get older and understand even more, they have more of a chance of being successful at resisting. Most molesters want scared, compliant victims.

People are reluctant to tell kids about the possibility abuse because it's unpleasant to feel you're stripping away their innocence, but think of it as giving kids important survival skills. My kids loved to watch animal documentaries, and we talked about "human predators" in that context when they were small. What is appropriate for an adult to ask or do--and what isn't? If they develop a sense of that voice inside that lets them know something strange is happening, they can begin to trust themselves, even when the adult in question is someone respected.

There would have been many fewer kids abused by priests in past years if their parents hadn't had such reverence for the priest. Kids need to know that ANYONE who sets off their inner alarm bells about something being inappropriate is doing something wrong to them--even if it's a favorite coach, teacher, priest, grandfather or grandmother, whatever. And they need to know that we will listen to them and believe them if they tell us about it--even if they tell us it's our own parent or uncle. Kids stay quiet because they are afraid, and they think they have done something wrong. The abuser emphasizes this.

My heart goes out to all these kids, and I hope they get the help they need to heal and recognize how strong they are.

Teach your children well. teach them of the dangers, teach them to tell you when something is not right. teach them that if their first reaction tells them something is wrong, it probably is. one thing you can do about the dangers out there, is have real conversations with your kids, collectively and individually. if you child feels comfortable talking to you, the chance they get abused is reduced.

I have worked in many situations where someone suddenly "decided to retire" and although there were rumors running around, the true facts for the departure were not known.

This guy wanted to keep things quiet for as long as he could. Perhaps when the union rep called his to find out what happened, he told the rep that he just decided to retire and there was nothing for the rep to do. That's at least as feasible as your scenario.

What there is that passes for the legal system is a great amount of corruption, extortion, racqueteering, legalized prostitution, in the terms of the courtrooms, lawyers/district attorneys, as well as good old-fashioned normal prostitution, payola schemes, bias, elitism, monopolization, autocracy, egos, graft, bribery, illegal gambling, illegally gaming the system, and some good-old fashioned good old boy/girl network with an intricate "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" philosophy. Even by watching an episode of "Law and Order," it will tell you as much being true in the courtroom! You need to take these words to heart because I took and passed my Criminal Justice classes in high school with TWO A+ grades, which, might I add, were the highest grades in BOTH of the classes, so I know a thing or two about legal procedure. Sadly, due to my cynicism, or more accurately, my Aspberger's Syndrome, my inability to compromose the truth for anything, and my zero tolerance for any kind of male cow manure, I am not a part of the legal profession, though I could have easily been a good lawyer and had tons of money by now. However, with that being said, I just do not believe in screwing with people for the biases of other people. I do know that in a courtroom and in the entire legal profession, the only choices that the average citizen has is which prostitute do they want to give them a service and which pimp or john do they wish to have their way with them if they are put into the position of one or more forms of prostitution themselves.

flintlock- I thought this was a good point, given that there's been a lot of discussion lately about arming teachers. If this guy had a gun, imagine how much more scared the kids would be to tell. I am in favor of the NRA's idea of armed guards at schools, but they should be police officers, not teachers.

I, for one, Lee-1515484, am NOT in favor of armed guards at public schools and I am this way for numerous reasons. The first reason is that WE are supposed to be the militia and the government, let alone corporations, are NOT supposed to be OUR militia. Now, granted, this might seem like a slap in the face to our economic recovery and I might seem like that I am denying people a new chance to have a job, but the reality is that this is simply NOT the way to give people our jobs. There ARE better ways to bring back jobs to this country but I will discuss them at some other later time. The second reason that I oppose armed guards at schools is that the government will utilize the security guards of the megacorporations, law enforcement agencies, or the military police units and/or soldiers to make the very police state that we are trying to avoid and once that happens, well, the government and the megacorporations, unions, the New World Order, and the like that are lining its coffers can use that plan of attack as a run-around to take out Second Amendment rights. Trust me, the government is VERY sneaky with doing things like that to people. The third reason is that ALL children that are physically able to do so should be taught martial arts or some form of self-defense as well as to properly settle their differences through more peaceful and constructive means first and troubled children, especially bullies, need to be yanked from the classrooms as quickly as possible and to be taught in more specialized locations and the same thing goes for people who are disabled that absolutely can not, will not, or simply choose not to coexist within the school body. Furthermore, we need to, gasp, REPEAL anti-firearm laws all throughout ALL school systems (that means public, private, parochial, charter, and alternative school systems) so that in case something DOES go wrong and peaceful conversations do not work (as what will happen with demonically possessed people, mentally insane people, drug using pscyhopaths, or some combination of the three or all of the above), then the children do not need to be sitting ducks while waiting for the teachers, armed guards, law enforcement officers, or the military to take down the psychopath. The fourth reason is when we kicked Yahweh out of the classrooms, we also sealed our fate as a nation and we are simply paying the price for rebelling against the Creator. Now I know that there are people that would be saying that it would be violating a seperation of church and state, yet these same hypocrites have absolutely no qualms whatsoever when it comes to their various psuedo-scientific theorems and the promotion of Communist/Socialist/Fascist value systems, let alone anti-religions. I will say these words to those kinds of people in return to their little smarty pants (read dumber than a rock) remarks. What I am going to say to you is what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. What I mean is that if you are going to kick out all forms of religion, then by all means people who think like you are equally as guilty of promoting the religions of anti-religion and you are trying to turn your forms of psuedo-science and psuedo-history into the agenda of worshipping a one-world, anti-environmentalism that poses as environmentalism, religion that is posing as an anti-religion and, as such, YOU should also be forced out of the public school system if your anti-religion is being forced on to people that do not, can not, will not, nor are able to due to their ethical, legal, and moral structures in their lives. The bottom line is this, people. Schools are there to, gasp, TEACH our children to learn things. Parents are there to teach us about right from wrong and the schools only serve to reinforce that role and to NOT teach children about it outright. However, schools are NOT there to be a prison (and that last part is for all of you people that are thinking the worst in children like that Lamar Bone guy). Schools are not meant to have chain link or concrete fences or barriers. The schools are not meant to have barbwire and concertina wire. The schools are not meant to have armed guards or dogs and the principal is not meant to become a warden to people that they have already deemed as misfits before they had a chance to prove that they can be truly right in this world (shades of Battle Royale, anyone). The schools are not meant to become prisons, concentration camps, re-education centers, gulags, or FEMA centers. Schools are meant to TEACH people to make something out of their lives, to learn to make friends, and children are there to learn things that can not really be quantified in books. Perhaps it would be nice to teach them classes about how the real world works as well, but the sad thing is that even that is in the eye of the beholder. However, I do believe that schools do indeed need to reflect the real world and how it operates rather than going towards a form of bias from the left, right, middle, or fringe. Children are so ill-prepared for the harsh realities of the world and schools need to simply step up their game in teaching them things like filling out a resume, how to pay bills, and to give them better tools and advice on how to have a career or, better yet, to start their own business.

There have been many stories in the media lately of female teachers arrested and convicted of molesting students. I've actually been appalled at how many female predators there are in education.

This is so true. A few years back, in a small PA town, there was a pedophile softball coach molesting his young team. The town initially closed ranks to protect him, as he was a pillar of the community. Even his wife stood behind him (with their own girls, which I shudder to think about that.). Eventually so many children came forward, that the community had no choice but react. Guess what, he was prosecuted and received a slap on the wrist with a few days in jail and a forced resignation-that's it. His idiot wife is still with him, but the daughters moved out.

he probably started as a teachers aid in the day time and going to classes at night. if you want to be a teacher you have to do so much time as an aid.
