93-year-old man allegedly stabs wife, 95, to death

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A 93-year-old man accused of killing his wife thought he had also stabbed himself to death and asked paramedics en route to the hospital "why I am I still awake?" authorities said.

Harry Irwin is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 95-year-old wife, Grace, in south Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Wednesday.

A daughter of the couple found Grace Irwin bleeding on a bed and Harry Irwin laying still in a recliner with knife in his hand, according to a probable cause statement filed by detectives in the case.

Harry Irwin had apparently slit his wrists and plunged a knife into his chest, detectives said in the statement. Grace Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene.

On the way to the hospital, police said Irwin stated: "Yes, I killed her then killed myself. Why am I awake?"Irwin said he tried to stab himself in the heart but he must have aimed too low and hit a rib, according to the probable cause statement.

He also said his wife was arguing and screaming at him all night and that he couldn't take it anymore, the statement said.

"Given the facts, a murder charge was warranted," Baker said. "No victim deserves someone else deciding when they will die."

Harry Irwin remained in the hospital on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Q: Why do most husbands die before their wives?

A: Because they want to.

That is only the case because people care more about how "hot" their partner is than any morals or character traits. People chose the looks over how well they connect..... And this is what you end up with either divorce or sad old people.

I was hoping that this was going to be a mutal decision between the 2 long loved relationships, but then i read this:

He also said his wife was arguing and screaming at him all night and that he couldn't take it anymore, the statement said.

Harry goes to Hell.

Sam,

"That is only the case because people care more about how "hot" their partner is than any morals or character traits. People chose the looks over how well they connect....."

No one is good looking at 95. I used to be a reasonably good looking young man, but now I am 63, and it's like I keep getting uglier and uglier every day. I hate to look at myself in the mirror anymore and shudder to think what I will look like if I survive to 95.

Somebody needs to contact Senator Diane Feinstein and have her add that brand and size of knife to her gun ban bill. This is a tragedy that could have been prevented. Where is that cop armed with an AR-15 when you need him?

I bet they give him life for this tragic criminal act.

Oh, I forgot, the man married the woman....proposed, etc. Then he turned into the beer drinking gut buddy on the couch and sat around watching football and picking his nose and scratching his butt kind of Superman!

Yes, please blame the lady, because all those years she put up with living with his BS. But, since she is now deceased, you can only hear his side of the marriage. Oh, I forgot, he is a man, perfect in every way---well, according to 97% of the man gender.

I say patch him up and let him go.

Anyone that's been married until they're in their 90's has already done a life sentence.....

Isaca, (below me)

Love it. A lot of us have been saying that for years but you still have the people out there that believe banning all weapons is the answer. Just like banning drugs was the answer and that worked right?! LOL.

Ban anything in this entire world and if someone wants enough, they'll obtain it one way or another....

Take care....

People that kill with knives are just as crazy as those dumb asses who use guns for stupid mass murders.

The only reason he didn't kill her with a gun is probably cuz he didn't have one! Otherwise I'm sure that's exactly what he would have used.

Point Being: It's not the gun that's the problem!!! It's the sick psychotic loons who use the guns or the knives or the baseball bats or anything of the nature they can get their hands on. People need to start pulling their heads outta their back sides and realize that a gun doesn't just grow legs and start pulling it's own trigger!

Creek Dog,

"I say patch him up and let him go."

I agree. He's already done his time, as you said, and, besides, what are they going to do with him? Give him the death penalty? That would be a waste of drugs and money. He's almost dead already. Sentence him to life in prison? What would that be, 2 or 3 years?

Really? Patch him up and let him go? I hope that was an attempt at a joke. Just because they were in their 90s doesn't mean he had the right to kill her. Who knows, she may have lived past 100 if she had been allowed to. Now we'll never know. As for the killer, lock him up and throw away the key for whatever time he has left.

A murderer is a murderer no matter how old they are.

People that are going to commit murder are going to commit murder. I have an arsenal, myself, but have never pointed a single weapon at a human being. Most of the murders you are yapping about are done by criminals and gang bangers.

No legal and self-respecting gun owner even pulls a gun unless there is an emergency or at the firing range, and it will be used in either case. They are either locked up or concealed the rest of the time and you never know they are there.

That old fart could have just as easily overdosed her on sleeping or pain medication along with himself and they would both probably have gone to sleep and died painlessly.

I really don't understand using a knife or a gun for suicide. The odds of surviving wounded and forever in severe pain are too high in this day of medical miracles.

Anyway, use your 2nd Amendment if you desire and can, unless Senator Feinstein takes that away. I am sure all of the armed felons are just biting at the bits waiting to turn in their guns, themselves. This packing gal will quietly be around safe and sound, no matter what. Have a nice day!

"He also said his wife was arguing and screaming at him all night and that he couldn't take it anymore, the statement said."

This exactly why I refuse to get married. A life sentence for this man might actually be 30 days or less. Men die before their wives not because they don't take care of themselves. It's an escape. So many women love to argue and purposely start arguments as one ex told me to get a rise out of him. They are childish and want to see the guy's passion, then wonder why they got slapped "upside the head". I've come to the conclusion that all men are stupid and all women are insane. Men are stupid because they keep returning to their psychopaths and women are insane because they want to be treated like crap. They find a nice guy and treat him like crap, then meet a scumbag and love him. If that is not insanity then there is no insanity.

Hey Mickey, I kinda agree with Realistic...from Fre's comments doesn't sound like he's much of a catch...way too cynical and sounds like a pretty hateful, bitter attitude I think for most women's taste.

But your choice of "examples" weren't too well chosen. Catholic priests..child molesters... Monks & nuns...of some orders...self conflagerations....

You are right tho...it's a choice and not for everyone just as having children is not for everyone.

Maybe the wife in this story, had given over to dementia and her hubby simply couldn't stand the end results...why I don't like these stories...never enough information & background.

"Mickey- don't invoke catholic priests on justifying not being married... just not good with the stereotypes."

Huh? I don't follow you. Celibacy is always a choice for anyone, and so is marriage. What does it have to do with stereotypes? If you mean that all Catholic priests are pedophiles, that is the stereotype. Out of the tens of thousands of priests, only a relatively small number have been accused of such a thing.

Believe it or not, priests and nuns don't get married, but that doesn't mean they don't have sex. I'm friends with a former nun, who's told me stories about "Club Med" for priests/nuns, where everyone registers under false names and "mate like bunnies" for the week. That makes the other 51 weeks almost bearable.....

Nope, not part of any lemming crowds and this has nothing to do with politics, or guns, since there was no gun in this story. It's posters like yourselves that make moderate people, who are fine with gun ownership and such, run away from even listening to you because you don't have a rational, grown up or logical bone in your body. And, to top it off, instead of having a decent argument to refute my claim, you insist I am a Democrat and that I need a midol (women bashing? so surprising to hear from people with the idiotic postings).

This country be a "free" country, but this privately owned and maintained blog is not required to abide by your idea of what the definition of the first amendment is. And still, you won't get it. So have at it, keep being the lunatics that the "Democrats" or moderate people think that you are. So clever. So brave. So righteous. Yet, so ignorant. Funny.

Instead we choose to make fun of this meaningful longevity, ending in such tragic end .

No one cares ...why didn't they have someone to help them with mediation and clear the way for them (incompetents of right judgement ) sad sad sad .....If they didn't have anyone shame shame shame to the social services .Us system should learn from ASIA country how to respect an elder .

The new health care system will do him in, 12 hours waiting in the ER, put on a list, analysed by a team of doctors who decide whether you should be treated...whether you are worth treating or you are to be ignored until you die....go to Canada and find out - the Canucks praise their system because they think these things are normal. Everyone says 'OH!!!! we Americans have an expensive health care system!!!!!! Yes!!!!!! because we get quick service, timely service, and that is expensive and important if you have a serious illness. I know both systems and know what i'm talking "about".......oops...I mean......"aboooot"

                or

it was an AR15 "Slice-a-lot Ultra Magnum Chromium Triple Blade Knife" with the black color handle option that forced him to do it - I mean after all, how can you resist murder when the handle is black, and it is a triple blade....c'mon, how can anyone resist?. Now if they did a redesign and changed the color of the handle to let's say pink, and reduced it to a two blade option, according to the new government specifications....he would have remained same, not killed anyone, but would have experienced a 35 day bout of dancing around in leotards while watching "American Idol". This would have created brain damage.. - to any man - ..but no murder...safe as can be - so there you go liberals, argue with that logic!!!!!!

They have to. Otherwise it would set a dangerous precedent: After a certain age, you are too old to prosecute even for murder.

Funny you bring that up Isaca.

I find it strange when the anti death penalty people all scream and yell that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Yet any time a person on death row comes up for execution, they always try to make up any possible reason as to why we cannot or should not execute them. "I am too fat so the executioner won't be able to find my veins."

I would like to ask all anti death penalty folks one question. If the death penalty is not a deterrent then why are hardcore criminals on death row always begging for their lives?

Well, JohnLaz, as someone who is not opposed to the death penalty, I would say that, since the death penalty did not prevent the cretin from committing the crime in the first place, it was not a deterrent - which brings up the fact that if one's death is not a deterrent, then nothing could have prevented this cretin from killing, and so s/he deserves the death penalty, doesn't s/he?

Of course they beg for their selfish lives after doing it.

What bothers me is the discrimination, against men of color, and against men in general, since few women get sentenced to death despite committing heinous crimes. I believe in being held accountable as an individual, whether one is male or female.

                      Amused,

I think you are correct. Many of our violent criminals should be punished by the death penalty. And that is an interesting point you bring up about it not being applied fairly. There was an article the other day about a woman in Philly who beat someone to death with a hammer in early 80s. She got 4 years for what our ridiculous government called a 3rd degree murder. Once she got out she started kidnapping people on social security, keeping them locked up in her "dungeon" and stealing the funds. I would say this woman would make a fine candidate for the death penalty....but she probably won't even face 10 years in our disgusting and broken system.

Nomore*** - very funny! Look, this guy put up with the torture delivered by that B*%$# for way too many years. Have you seen the movie Lincoln? The President is trying to resolve the slavery issue and the Civil War (kinda big dynamic stuff) and his wife is still torturing him. You can look down on me all thst you want when I say this struggle for power between women and men will never end. I solved it though for me - I am happy, healthy and torture free (single). You know we don't have to waterboard anyone - just find the biggest B*%$#s that there are (should not be a problem) and put them in the same cell as the bad guys. Wallah - no geneva Convention violations and plenty of useful information.

and there was no mention of the psychosis Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln was diagnosed with? How many children do you watch die before your outlook on life becomes a bit tilted? Especially when it is your own child.

Women back then had no say, no power, no birth control, no place in a man's world. "oh, just show up, but please, shut up!"

Some men never realize that they can not blame the woman 24/7. Next thing you know, we will be charged with populating the world. Oh, the horror of it all?

Well, you do fully control the abortion issue, even though women are only 1/2 the equation in creating life. Why shouldn't you get all the blame, you wanted all the control so all the blame comes with that. Give a man some decision making in whether you kill a child or not and then you can share blame, until then, STFU.

Either choice is correct. I grew up saying "carving turkey" rather than "slicing it". It's a matter of dialect. It all depends on where you grew up. Why do some people call soft drinks "soda" and others call them "pop" and yet others combine the two and call it "soda pop"? Dialect. There are many different dialects of English spoken in the United States.

It probably wasn't the first time she nagged him, but certainly will be the last (at least in this life.)

Be serious. We should not ban all knives. Only semi automatic ones, or ones that allow you to carry 3 or more blades.

idk....banning knives altogether may be better than having a background check ran on you before being served your steak.

Especially the Swiss Army knife, multi blade instrument of death. That is if you can figure out how to open it.

There is no reason the average citizen should own a knife long enough for stabbing.

It doesn't take a "long blade" I speak from experience. I was stabbed in 1998 with a common pocket knife that had a 3 1/2" blade and trust me....one of the wounds I endured went in just below my sternum, and behind it and up,,,I wound up with an air pocket against my heart....along with 10 other wounds...Some of which could have also been fatal.

                                              Time for knife control!

We can't allow people to have sharp knives - there isn't even a Constitutional right to own a knife. Who needs more than a butter knife? Time to register those people with steak knives and those other knives that can cut things are so dangerous! The reason we don't have knife control is that the Republicans and Tea Partiers are beholden to the National Knife Association.

We must act now! For the Children! Any delay that results in one death from a knife is far too many.

(Please ignore that the weapon of death of Islamic Militants are knives so they need to be allowed to keep theirs so they can practice their beheading religion - instead, seize the Baptists' sterling silver butter knives so they can't cut anything anymore or slather real butter on their cornbread).

Hummm. Lets see. Knife= 1 person dead.. Gun= 10s or 100s dead.. Yep, your whole idea makes great sense. Although, you did get something wrong. Since knives are weapons, they indeed are covered under the 2A.

Register all knives? Ban all knives? Well, maybe, but at least they serve a functional peaceful use. Guns are designed to kill and accomplish nothing of use when they are not being used to kill.

oh yes, totally the guns fault and if we didnt have any our children would be so safe.....

22 kids slashed by knife wielding man

3 kids killed and 13 injured by axe wielding man

need i go on? .....you are one of the ignorant blind sheeple

                                              Revis,

Don't mind the dimwits; they neither understand sarcasm nor condone independent thinking. The math is impressive too (1 gun = hundreds dead? when was this, exactly? - do the guns you know of shoot sharks with laser beams coming out of their eyes or are they nuclear? Also are you sure Jack the Ripper used a different knife each time, or is it possible to kill more than one person with a knife?)

Lastly, I would count securing my house and family a "peaceful use", not that I am required to be peaceful

I could do more with none lethal weapons then a lethal one. Then again, that takes actually being trained. I doubt vary much so that most people that carry guns for " protection " are up to the task of being trained to use specialized weapons.

So, yeah, your gun sitting in your house is doing nothing while it is not in use and it has no other use unlike some of my defensive weapons. You never knew guns could kill hundreds? wow man, you need to both get out more and do some research.

Guns kill. That is what they do, that is all they do that is useful. It is the reason you feel like you have to carry one for protection and the biggest reason that both you and your family are at a higher risk of death from someone or a member of your family taking those guns from you and shooting you with them.

Me on the other hand. a purp steps through my front door or even my windows and they get hit with blinding strobes. The only thing they can do is close their eyes. If they attempt to keep them open, they will vomit and still be useless on the floor and tied up waiting to be hauled away.

I carry a mobile version of that as well. You are absolutely no good pointing a gun at someone with strong counter measures and the training to use them.

so, yeah, I have to say that if your gun is sitting in your house not doing anything, it is useless and against someone trained to deal with it, it is even more so.

Wow! I've had a gun for 20 years and it never killed anyone! Just sayin

                                                  QE137,

The 2nd Amendment says nothing about weapons. It says "arms" which means guns.

So, one death is ok and many are not? The knife death is dandy with you then?
