Subscribe to RSSPolice say a 70-year-old man was driving drunk when he caused 15 car crashes near Atlanta -- one of them fatal -- before smashing his pickup truck into a restaurant.
Michael Owen Snider was charged with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, following too closely and reckless driving, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported on its website, citing jail records.
The Post reported that authorities said Snider was driving a 2006 Ford Super Duty pickup on Wednesday evening when he caused five hit-and-run accidents in DeKalb County and about 10 more in Gwinnett County.
Authorities said he caused a five-vehicle chain-reaction pileup that killed 69-year-old Mintiwab Woldeyhans of Loganville.
Minutes later, authorities told the Post, he went off the road and smashed into Johnboy's Home Cooking restaurant along U.S. 78 in Snellville, northeast of Atlanta. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and was being held without bond.

Raising taxes on gasoline to $1,000 a gallon, to reduce drunk driving.
And banning seatbelts, to reduce traffic deaths.
They'll also be banning all black cars, for no particular reason.
And banning vehicles that have one of the following"evil features":
Door handles
Detachable gas caps
Threads on any of the nuts, bolts, or studs on the vehicle
Seats that adjust forwards and backwards to adjust for larger or smaller operators
Mufflers
Exhaust heat shielding
Gas tanks that hold more than 10 ounces of gas
Automatic or semi-automatic transmissions
Engines with more than 15 horsepower
Headlights that can be switched off of high beam
Liberal mentality ; ban all automoblies that will fix the problem

My 11th year in AA and Al-anon we just celebrated. While the scientific understanding of alcohol abuse (and addictive behaviors in general) is increasing all the time, there's still lots to learn. Just as there are many types of cancer and CVD, alcoholism is hardly a single "disease" entity. In fact, I'm not sure it even reaches the status of disease, although calling it such has helped many accept treatment, exchanging one type of denial for another. There's a spectrum in terms of severity, etiology and effective treatments for the syndrome. Without knowing more about this particular drunk in the story, he's probably on the severe end of things, in need of ball breaking "love", old time big book AA after long term inpatient detox and "rehab" and the big house, "90 and 90", and Attila the Hun for a sponsor. ( read, a really swell "bottom") No more booze for him, nor driving for decades. And in almost all cases like this, there are other underlying health issues that need assessment and effective fixing, if it's all ever going to work. On the other end of things are problem drinkers (hate the term), who, if exposed to the hard line are often sent packing, then often progressing to full syndrome status. Most of us are in the middle, like much else in life. Fortunately, along with medicine and psychology beginning to get a better handle on this, judges, jails and prosecutors are as well. Lots more to report on this, but this ought to stir things up enough for now. Aa.

He caused 15 crashes?! I've been drunk before. I've even driven drunk before. But I never caused one crash. You can't blame causing 15 crashes on being drunk. That's 15 attempted homicides and one successful one. Please throw him in jail forever.

Mr. G, you need to go back and study our founding fathers. Devout Christian's like George Mason and Patrick Henry used the bible as a guide when drafting the bill of rights. The bill of God given rights. Read Thomas Jefferson's declaration of indepencence where it states "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".
Man is not man's original creator. You can't say man and woman concieved the first man because who conceived the parents? Belief in God is about faith. No one can prove the existence of God just like no one can prove the Big Bang happened or that we got here through evolution. I don't see monkeys still evolving today so I can assume that evolution was a myth. I haven't seen a video or picture of two particles colliding and creating this world we now live in.
You say the burden of proof falls on those making the claim. Well you're claiming God doesn't exists, and I'm the one questioning your claim, so where's your proof?

Hey at least you have a legal tolerance that is allowed for alcohol before you get charged with dui. My son found out the hard way that when he was blood tested after a traffic stop that there was no legal level for illegal pills or pot. (And he was one of those kids that kept saying--dad you don't know anything, I know how the system works.) Next month I may actually find out if/when the system will let him out of jail/prison. I just hope the 261 days he has already spent in the county jail is teaching him that it IS better to have nothing to do with pot, or any other illegal drugs.
I kept telling him, it may be legal in California (now several other states) BUT YOU ARE IN TEXAS!!!!
Mike I'm not sure what your kid actually did, or told you, but a standard traffic stop doesn't typically require a blood test unless he was pulled over completely whacked out his mind in which case he probably deserved the DUI. The fact the kid is serving close to a year in jail either means he must have really must be a complete @!$%# up and you most likely failed as a father... What Truthbeknow was referring to is the fact that smoking a little pot doesn't make people do super stupid stuff like alcohol will. I do both all I can say is that the only trouble I've got in has been purely alcohol related.

Actually I have been thinking about replacing my full size van with something like a Ford Superduty. Mainly for protection. After all living in Texas you need big vehicles to protect you from all the drunk Mexicans that the Feds refuse to keep out of the country. It just like the 2 weapons I keep at home, need them due to the extreme danger from the Mexican Drug runners that have been armed by the Federal governments stupid activity.
By the way, I have NEVER drove drunk. In fact my Van, which I purchased new, is 13 years old, has about a quarter million miles on it. I have only had accident damage to it 3 times. Twice drunked Mexican rear ended it, once when it was parked accross the street form a police station, on once when a "sober" Mexican backed into it, again in a parking lot at a courthouse while I was serving jury duty.
Apparently a 2 ton high sitting van is hard for them to see. P.S. every time those clowns would pretend they only spoke spanish - - - until the police arrived, then they all knew english also. Found out later that one had been deported 5 times before. Seems he had learned to give a fake name and volunteer to be sent back quickly, so that the system would not flag him as a repeat offender until he was safely back south.

This story is about a tragedy that shouldn't have happened. Drunk driving is serious and this old fool killed somebody and caused a lot of damage. This may be an alcohol issue (probably) or an elderly driver issue (maybe), but it is NOT a gun rights issue (for sure).

You are quite right - but the killing of 20 children in Newtown, the killings in the Colorado theater, are not gun rights issues either, but there are some politicians that have tried to made them into one. the real issue here - as with gun violence - is identifying and treating the problem, not trying to blame the means.
It's because the gun nuts have no "real" argument for what they want so they take every issue and try to make is sound like government is stealing your basic rights when the article is about a guy that simply should have know not to get behind the wheel
I for one consider attacks on the Constitution of the Unites States of America, and particularity the Second Amendment, as a "real" argument worthy of open and honest discussion.
The next thing you know the Democrats are going to want to ban Ford Super Duty pickups! If there were less Ford pickups there would be less drunken driving deaths! I know - they should limit the tank size to 10 gallons. That way they would have to stop more often to fill up, and wouldn't be able to run over as many people!
