A 17-year-old wrote in a confession released Thursday that the horror movie remake of "Halloween" gave him the idea to kill his mother and sister.
Jake Evans is on trial for the Oct. 3 slayings of his 15-year-old sister, Mallory, and mother Jami in their upscale Aledo home. The confession was introduced as evidence.
In a four-page written confession to police hours after his arrest, Evans said he had watched the remake of "Halloween" three times earlier that week.
The 2007 Rob Zombie film is about a 10-year-old boy who murders several people and kills a number of others 15 years later.
While watching it, I was amazed at how at ease the boy was during the murders and how little remorse he had," Evans wrote. "Afterward, I was thinking to myself it would be the same for me when I kill someone."
Later, as his mother and sister watched the presidential debate that night, he said he "just sat in the living room thinking about how I was going to kill my family."
He wrote that he got a knife.
"I went back upstairs and kept pacing back and forth imagining killing Mallory," he said. "Thoughts of causing her pain kept entering my mind and were really bothering me. But then I'd think about the times she hurt my feelings."
He later knocked on her bedroom door and asked her to watch the comedy movie "Water Boy."
Then he changed his plans.
"After a while, I thought to myself that if I were to kill my mom and Mallory, I wouldn't want them to feel anything, so I decided to kill them both with the .22 revolver I stole from my Grandpa," he wrote.
He said he thought about it some more.
"I then spent probably over an hour walking nervously around the house thinking how life will never be the same and how I would never see them again," he wrote.
He said he knocked on sister's door again and told her their mother needed her.
"She came out and out of the corner of her eye she saw me pointing the gun at her," he said. "She thought I was joking and told me that I was freaking her out. I shot her in the back and then the head."
'Dreadful and terrifying'
He then went to the study and shot his mother three times.
"In shock, I ran to my room and was screaming at the top of my lungs that I am really messed up and that I killed my mom and sister," he wrote.
"As I emptied the shells on my bed, I heard noizes (sic) and realized that Mallory was still alive," he said. "While I loaded the gun back up, I was shouting that I was sorry and then ran as fast as I could to kill her. I made sure my mom was dead and shot her again in the head."
He said he placed the gun on the counter and called 911.
Sheriff's deputies found the bodies of his mother and sister and arrested him.
In the last lines of his confession, he wrote: "I know now though that I'm done with killing. It's the most dreadful and terrifying thing I will ever experience. And what happened last night will haunt me forever."

What "pain" could have his sister caused him? What called him an idiot or stupid or some other dumb thing that brothers and sisters call each other? Premeditated with no thought for those he killed except how it would affect him. What a selfish monster. What is going on in our society that kids think less about the sanctity of life than they do about the things they own? What their parents can give them more than what they can do for their parents?
I could have sworn that yesterday it was all the fault of video game violence corrupting the innocent minds of youth? Maybe he was not allowed to play with trucks as a tot? It has to be someone elses fault of course. What kind of mind even considers murder for the person who brought you into the world? Millions of children watch horrific movies and go to bed scared of the dark, this kid went to lay in the dark imagining being the monster. In the world before movie ratings this would be used as a horrible lesson not used as an excuse to call the monster a victim. What excuse did lizzie Borden have? Poor Jack the Ripper, if he had just had a more understanding and tolerant society to grow up in.
Wow. So the Conservative view is that the rightful ownership of guns is a good thing, but when they get stolen from their rightful owner, it's the Liberal's fault, and any crime done with those stolen guns is also a Liberal thing, because Conservatives would never misuse guns.
We may have the same first name, but we sure do differ on our opinions.
Yes, this seems to be a troubled youth. I just have to wonder what would have happened if this kid had NOT been able to steal his grandfathers gun. Not a suggestion that grandfather not OWN a gun, just that Gramps lock the thing up so that it doesn't get stolen. Would the kid have done something then? Did the gun make it too easy? I wish I could yell YES at the top of my lungs, but we simply do not know. We can not know. But we DO know that Grampa's gun was stolen by the kid, and the kid shot people, multiple times using it. I am for the least expensive, simplist solution. Secure your hardware!
a public hanging would work
Nope. Just a simple removal of a threat to the rest of society. Not ceremony any more than the removal of a rabid dog.
Oh, and to the parents of American children. Learn how to say no to little johnny. And it's O.K to tell your daughters to keep their legs tightly crossed on those first dates, or at least until they get to know the guy. And does johnny need a mercedes to drive to high school? If you answered yes to this question then you are one sick parent who has no values anymore and needs mental health. So, in closing, act like adults, treat your children not like adults, but like the children they are. Let them earn their keep. Dont take their talking back to you and their threats (out the door with them if they threaten you) We learned respect and discipline as kids, make then do it.....Get a spine people!
Wait a minute! I thought Hollywood and the VP said guns kill people?
Yeah, after all he slit their throats with the sharp edge of a DVD.
All states should have the death penalty and it should be quick trial and not waste our money in the courts with a person like this. Too bad he didn't point the gun at himself and pull the trigger.
Always about wasting your money, eh?
After killing his sister and mother, he did call 911 - this is what he said:
"It just kind of happened," Evans told the 911 operator in an eerily calm voice. "I've been kind of, uh, planning on killing for a while now."
When asked if he meant the two of them or just anybody, Evans responded: "Pretty much anybody."
A short time later, Parker County sheriff's deputies arrived at the Evans' family home in Annetta, a town of about 1,700 west of Fort Worth, and took him into custody without incident.
"I guess this is really selfish to say but, to me, I felt like they were just suffocating me in a way. I don't know," Evans said during the 911 call.
"Obviously, I am pretty, I guess, evil," he said.
Evans is charged with capital murder. A judge denied him bond.
"Just to let you know, I hate the feeling of killing someone, you know," Evans said in the 911 call. "I'm going to be messed up."

I can't even touch this story, I feel like a back-seat driver who doesn't know how to drive...I feel that there is A LOT of information that we are missing and I cannot read this young man's mind.
All I can say with certainty is that it is a tragedy for his family and his victims.
I'm going to reiterate this again to the parents of our misguided youth!

We as parents are at fault. I work in houses everyday and watch children curse their parents in front of me, lying around the house, not working, playing video games, drinking at home, smoking pot out back, stealing and so forth. What the hell people? Again! Act like parents instead of spineless jellyfish. Or take what you get....killed in your sleep, raising your daughters baby while she's out whoring, paying to support kids in their twenties and so forth.
And if my little speech stings you....you need help from a mental health expert.

spineless jellyfish beget spineless jellyfish
chickens come home to roost...sometimes they come armed
wow, have to say i agree with you on something cul. amazing,no?
I know... I agreed with you on something earlier and I nearly fainted. I couldn't even resist voting your post up. It made me feel...traitorous. :)
For those of you who don't think TV, Video Games, Movies, and the media in general do not influence behavior leading up to and including great violence ask yourself this question.
"If the media does not influence behavior then why does the American Advertising Machine spend billions and over time even trillions of dollars to gain access to it for promotion of what they want to sell?"
Unfortunately we can be sold a bag of crap if it is marketed well enough and that bar is very low for some!
Right around 314,999,999 citizens watched a horror movie at some point and did not murder someone to see how it would feel. I wonder what the problem is? Maybe nothing should EVER be viewed but older Walt Disney films and feel good politicians beaming "feel good, the government is your friend, think happy" on screens along the buildings/on the walls at workplaces/on a 24 hour a day screen in homes that can not be turned off? That would fix everything.
I cant disagree more. I have played video games since their inception, i absofreekinlutly LOVE all hacker slasher movies, zombies, apocalyptic end of days type stuff, but yet i have not done anything remotely like this. This is just a broken kid, nothing more and nothing less.
We don't know anything about the parent, so i am not playing that blame the parent game here. This kid was just not right. My daughter loves all the same movies i do, plays the same games, and yet is on honor role, volunteers at the humane society, absolutely loves helping out at the homeless shelter. So you tell me, if she watches the same movies as this nutjob, likes the same violent games, watches the same TV, then why isnt she or 99.9 percent of the children today homicidal maniacs? Your argument holds no weight. This kid was broken from the go.
A better example ........ why is it more rational to blame violence in movies and think a ban is more rational than blame societies problems on a bare breast in a movieand think a ban is the answer? BOTH are irrational.
Dennis-387683
Agreed.
The kid is a sociopath...they are probably born and not constructed. Could be genetic mutation or life in the womb hormonal disturbances. Either way we need to find a way to identify it early and treat it for what it is...a precursor to politicians or CEOs.
Ohh please, this kid was messed up and is looking to blame anyone and anything he thinks will lessen his sentence. He planned this, executed them without remorse, and then blames a movie?!? Why cant our justice system do the world a favor, put a bullet in him and lets be done with it. He killed two people, end of story. A quick trial, a blindfold, one bullet to the brain-pan and you save the American public nearly a million dollars. No mental evaluation, no 3 hot meals a day, nothing. One click, one boom, and I am a happy camper.
Interestingly after reading his confession, he thought his sister & mom were racist because of the way they treated black people. Wow! A lot going on in that boy's mind. We are losing our kids at alarming rates. Here in NYC, just take a subway ride ONE stop and listen to the high-schoolers as they talk to one another. It is a serious cause for alarm but everyone is "scared" to say or do something and these kids continue because they "get away" with such behavior and they keep taking it to the extreme until violence happens. These children (yes, CHILDREN) are from all socio-economic backgrounds and as a NYer who has straphanged for 30 years, I have seen and heard it all from prep school kids to the kids in the projects. Was on the G train several years ago with a bunch of high scholers when a man was robbed at gunpoint for his briefcase. As the only adult on the car, I had to maintain my cool and deal with the shock of it all while 10-15 frightened kids were huddled on 1 side of the train. Here's the crazy part: When the gunmen left the train, the kids starting laughing and hooping hollering and acting like it was a "movie" or something. I couldnt take it anymore and promptly gave a lecture to the 2 "boldest" loudmouths who dared not say a word back to me as I my biceps spoke for themselves if either of themeven dare tried 2 "showboat" on me. I wept when I got off that train because the view that I had of our teenage children was one of hopelessness. Some of our children are powder kegs and these sort of murders and other extreme violence will only get worse in years to come. May God have mercy on us all, individually and collectively.
Well put...
Get worse? as violent crime is down according to the FBI. More in number yes (because we have a much larger population that ever before). More per capita the data say no. IS it tragic--yes, but let's not let the media bombardment make us thing this is any more than it truly is---a bad seed that went way wrong.
Can we say Lord of the Flies latchkey kids, class?
Seriously, if we are going to be consistent and look to PREVENTION....then we need to ban knives, horror movies and .22 cal weapons.
He was going to use a knife....but didn't want to cause pain. He was going to use a knife. Ban knives.
A horror movie inspired him. Ban horror movies.
He used a .22 cal weapon. Ban them.
Let's go, media. Let's go.
i agree, but the move to prevent is more political than saving lives.
Alarmists...
The move it to ban high capacity assault rifles and mags. Because they are too efficient. So essentially the public is saying, some carnage is a price they are willing to pay, but they want it limited. The weapons and mags in questions allow for over that limit.
Numerous times these shootings have stopped when the killer was reloading. So the more often they must stop and reload, they more lives will be saved. Reloading time, is also a chance to run.
There is no push to ban all guns.
the kid at Sandy Hook reloaded several times.
yeah vic-as he used handguns, they're easier to conceal too. you think NYs' ban on sodas' above 16 ounce is because people are getting fat? those 20 oz. cups hold them "gang bangers" guns pretty good(can't put them in their pants now can they?) and they can "toss" 'em pretty fast too.

Herron,Say What, Yhbua, and any other anti-gun nutt-sack that refuses to believe movies, video games and music are to blame for young kids and young adults killing and want to blame guns and guns only, just one question for you...where you at now?
bet you wont show up for commenting here, but if was a gun story, you freaks would be all over it.
They dont just blame guns. They blame guns in the hands of murderers. When you can come up with a way to keep guns out of the hands of murderers, anti-gun people will stop talking about banning guns. We cant ban people, so you figure it out.
if a person with killing on the mind cant get a hold of a gun, then they will use something else. again..people are being blind as to why and what is making these young people kill. get your mind off the tool used to kill and put your mind on why and what is influencing.
No one said they couldnt grab something else. The point is, a gun is called a lethal weapon for a reason. Its far more deadly and dangerous than a stick, or a knife. Its also a ranged weapon. The closest thing next to it, is a Bow. The "tool" gives them too much power to take life. People want it as hard as possible.
So you better damn well believe we are going after any tools that make killing mass numbers of people too easy. Deal with it.
more
i see your one of those anti-gun nutt sacks who fails to look at ANYTHING that is causing these killings.
you firmly believe banning these guns and mags that the killings that our youth are committing will end.
We know the cause. They are mentally psychotic. Psychosis hits one in every so many "######" (dont know the number)
Psychotic people cant tell the difference between fantasy and reality. So anything on TV will mess with them. And people are naturally paranoid, and the fight or flight mechanism takes over. Combined with impaired judgement, its a recipe for murder and mayhem.
Banning assault weapons is about banning specific guns deemed to be "to good at killing".
And creating a size limit is about " making people reload more often" on purpose. The ONLY person that will hurt, is someone going to war against others. We dont support people going to war against others. You can move to Africa if you like war, they have lots.
go after what you like morejustice, poll i read this morning says 79% of people don't want a ban of ANY kind, better luck next time. seems there's more people who know the gun isn't the problem.
ahhhh...but who is mentally psychotic?
Polls depending where they are taken, and who all were polled, can be subjective at best. A poll at a right wing blog, is obviously going to get majority support for right wing causes.
What I would call fair polls, using a good cross section of people, have seen support for some gun control. That said, this isnt being put to a vote by the public.
@Against, this is why gun control advocates what mental health screening for gun buyers, to find out. The good news for you, people who already have guns, and havent shot anyone yet, they arent the one we need to find. Its new buyers, nuts and looking to kill, those are the ones who should be screened.
You owners need to be made to lock them up, so thefts become a thing of the past. Unlocked guns should be a felony.
MoreJustice...
Deal with this. I have a fairly large number of firearms. I've also worn the uniform to protect our rights from those who would like to usurp them. One of the rights I did and still do protect is the right of misinformed people like yourself to post and say inane drivel. Who will you go to when you're told you can't use that computer, only this government provided terminal to "chat" with others. What will YOUR response be when someone one day says they find what you say disturbing and stop you from saying it?
Freedoms and rights come with responsibilities.
I'm a RESPONSIBLE firearms owner. WHY must I pay the price for the actions of a CRIMINAL?
First they need to convince a majority XD, this is still a democracy. And if they can prove my computer is a real danger to peoples lives, then I would support ways to keep murders from occuring. I put life of the many ahead of my life. If you wore a uniform, you should know that.
Those weapons are too efficient at killing, and too dangerous isn the wrong hands. And any attempts to put in place means to make sure they dont end up in the worng hands, you NRA types fight tooth an nail. Gun bans are your own fault, for NOT embracing reasonable controls.
All anyone wants is ALL bad guys kept from having a gun. By whatever mean necessary. Deal with that.
Then just have the authorities do sweeps in, oh say Detroit, Chicago, New York City, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, and several other large cities and see how many thousands of ILLEGALLY possessed firearms are found.
Then follow through and imprison those individuals.
Lets hold the PERPETRATORS of crime responsible for a change. It's NOT the firearm, which is nothing but a tool, it's NOT societies fault for "failing" the person, it is the fault and responsibility of the INDIVIDUAL FAILING SOCIETY.
Here's the insanity:
A recent Gallup Poll showed that a huge majority of Americans (Dems and Repubs alike) favor all of the gun control legislative proposals put forth by the Obama administration.
Ban high capacity magazines : 54%
Assault weapon ban : 60%
Ban armor-piercing bullets : 67%
School emergency response plans : 70%
More police officers : 75%
Stiffer Penalties for Straw Purchases : 79%
Greater funding for Mental Health Programs : 82%
Universal background checks for all sales of guns (including gun shows) : 91%
However an insane effect is noted by a Washington Post poll which broke these results down by party affiliation:
When Republican were asked if they supported the Obama administrations proposals in general the results were
Favor : 21%
Opposed : 72%
even though by party they had given such items as banning high capacity magazines a 59% rating and universal background checks a rating of 89%...the only rating f all those categories listed above that fell below 50% was the rating given for the assault weapon ban which itself came in at 45%.
But when these proposals were identified as coming from the Obama administration, the general overall came out as mentioned earlier,
Favorable 21% and Opposed as 72%.
In other words, Republicans were highly in favor of almost all of the proposals until they found out they were from Obama, then they opposed them. That's patently insane and demonstrates the problem conservatives are generating in the country in terms of our ability to problem solve as a nation.
more- it was from this "left wing" source we are on now.
Thats it, leave it to beaver, 12/7/365 all channels. Andy Griffith the other 12.
I think its all the violence shown on the news too. Shows people what others are doing.
That is such a load of BS! No movie makes you wanna kill someone! I have watched horror practically my whole life from the time I was 7 & even still to this day & not once has it ever given me the idea that killing someone IRL is ok! PPL have been killing each other from the time Cain killed Abel & they didn't need TV or movies to give them the idea. I guarantee this kid was thinking about doing this long before he saw this movie. He's just using it as an excuse!
I grew up in a rural area where everybody had guns and none were secured. Things like this didn't happen back then - and there were no movies with the rampant violence & killings back then and there were no video games where the object was killing back then and there were virtually no books with rampant and needless killing back then etc. etc. etc.
There have always been guns available in this country, the only thing that has changed is what kids are exposed to when they're growing up.
Seems pretty simple to me.
OH MY GOD NO now these %*$($&%&#@@ do-gooders in Congress will be wanting to ban our movies.
By God this is something to fight over, this is against the Constitution.
This is a death penalty case if I've ever seen one....
If you read this young man's confession, taking his age into account, etc... he cannot even spell the word "lunch." He talks about teenagers being cruel and his sister being a racist. He had an appointment with an "alergist" that day - which makes me wonder how many doctors could he have had?
What he did was terrible and tragic, I don't think we have all the information that we need. He remembers his day in detail, which implies he was calm in writing his confession, was he on medication that gave him an eery calm?
Medical journals have decided that the "teen brain," is not fully developed until around 25 years old. It is the frontal lobes that are underdeveloped until that age...they are in charge of impulse control, reasoning, emotional control ..... pretty much everything a person needs for reasonable judgement of a situation... given that his confession looks and reads like a 4th grade essay, we may never understand what this young man did - it is a tragedy for everyone. In an earlier post, I agreed with a poster who said that he was a sociopath, I'm going to back off of that label / statement because I am not a psychiatrist, but I agree something was wrong in this young man's mind....I'll leave that to the professionals and offer condolences to the family (he had at least 2 other sisters who were away that day - but whom he did plan to kill, along with his grandparents).
Why didn't he kill them with the knife?
How could he get his hands on Grandpa's gun?
Grandpa, any regrets?
they will not move to ban violent movies and music, as we all know by now, hollywood rides the back of the democratic party and vice vera and obama will not point to them. obama has also had very very big names in the music industry at the white house parties, ban the music, do you think they would show next time obama says "party at my house"
Well if we are to believe this nut then the dog of David Berkowitz's neighbor really is an ancient demon--holy crap we gotta find that dog!!!! OR is it really just a nut rationalizing?
Sure let's blame films and video games for desensitizing people---so what was the tile of the one that desensitized Jack the Ripper, do you suppose? Despite all this hooey and what the media tries to portray violent crime has been on a downward trend since the 80's (just check the FBI website) even as these movies and games abound. So the correlation is false, these people are just crazy and could be set off by Big Bird just as easily as Halloween--just ask the Berkowitz.
If you seriously believe a movie caused this, I have a bridge to I'd like to sell you...
Just listen to or read the transcript of the 911 call.
Where is dad in all of this?
whether you know it or not, we are influenced everyday when we watch tv or listen to the radio. if you have a favorite show on tv you cant miss, then you have been influenced, same with music.
think of tebow'ing, just how did that start?
Well if looking at violent material is bad, we need to ban everything violent. Not just movies. We should start with actual killing implements. Obviously these killers fantasize over them. Knives, guns, swords, bows. etc etc. all need to go. We can get to the make believe stuff after.
now your thinking, more of a pro-active approach.
if you my friend are serious about saving lives, then act like it...everything can kill and does kill.
drunk drivers kill just and many people this year as guns....but i dont see you asking for a ban on alcohol.
Its not an all or nothing deal.
ahh, but it should be, you cant view the problem and think to solve it with just one action.
if you truly want to prevent and save lives then you tackle the problem from all sides.
because when you dont and all you do is ban a guns and a mag, what would be to blame when a kid kills his family next year and uses some other means?
Statistically cars kill MORE people than guns each year according to CDC statistics.
MoreJustice, Against is right, it should be. If you are going to try and eliminate senseless killing why would you only take away one tool out of many? If right now you were to list as many items as you can that can kill a person I can list a non-lethal, legitimate use for each one. That includes firearms. That includes assault rifles. Selective reasoning can not be applied here to suit ANYONES personal feelings or any politicians agenda.
