Thief steals car, sleeping toddler after mom stops at garage sale

FORT WORTH - A man stole a car with a sleeping toddler inside Thursday afternoon.

Fabiola Garcia said the thief jumped into her still-running car when she stopped at a garage sale at about 3:30 p.m. in South Henderson Street in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her son, 2-year-old Ricardo Calderon, was sleeping inside the car.

"They came across the street and told me the little boy was in the car, and I called the police back and told them it was a kidnapping," witness Bobby Duncan said.

More news from NBCDFW.com

Police say the car thief didn't go very far before stopping the car and letting little boy out about 15 minutes later.

Garcia said she thanks God that Ricardo was not harmed.

The stolen car was still missing late Thursday. Police were searching for the thief.

Oh wow man. I would be shaking so much that I probably wouldn't be able to dial the phone to call police.

What a cute little kid. This could have turned out "much" worse. Take my car, house and everything I own man. Just don't hurt my family.

I'll be happy to start all over again as long as I have my two baby's and lovely wife. Amen.

Still, it might never have happened if the STUPID mother did not leave the keys in the car. It is illegal to leave your car running in many jurisdictions for a good reason.

The mother should be answering some tough questions regarding her responsibility of the child's safety.

Aside from potential car theft and endangerment to the child, the toddler should not have been left alone in the car anyway, especially with the engine running.

Arguably, the car thieves cared more for the safety of the child than did the mother.

There is no more excuse for leaving your car open and running with your child in it, NONE. Don't care what you are doing, it's not as important as a child. Really, a garage sale?

If you can't understand that then you are not ready for a child. The state should take the child away for awhile until she can't get some sense.

Christ the internet never fails to disappoint. I've left my kids in the car while I run back into the house who knows how many times, often to grab my wallet or cellphone or something. I have to think every parent does that at least once a month, if not weekly. I can distinctly remember my mother seeing some random garage sale and stopping when I was younger, and me and my sibs rarely got out unless it was big enough to take longer than 15 minutes to browse. Tho my mother would have turned the car off, but if she thought she saw something she wanted and expected to grab it and be back in a minute or two, but wound up wasting more time? That probably happened.

I don't know, I have to wonder if any of you have kids or live real lives. I've done things with my sons that, in retrospect, weren't the best ideas. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I can't bag on someone else's bad luck lest it become mine the next time.

@Sarah

I don't want to be overly critical of the mother but, Really she broke at least 2 laws. 1) you can't leave a child unattended under the age of 13 and 2) you can not leave a vehicle running and unattended. I think what bothers me the most is that it was for something as unimportant as a garage sale. You really want to put your child at risk so that you can buy somebody elses junk? As we all know it only takes a second for something to happen. Never, Never leave your child unattended at any cost.

And I agree with Sarah Angeline. Usually when you are at a garage sale - your car is right there. Was it hot or cold on that day? Did she leave it running so her child would be kept at a comfortable temperature? Why blame the Mom for a criminal's action. You people ... all so perfect, aren't you?

I don't know about anywhere else but in Texas it is against the law to leave a child in a car, and it's also against the law to leave your vehicle running, hell it's even illegal to leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. When are stupid parents going to learn, after they go to prison, and their child is dead.

It was a garage sell, the car is in eyesight. She probably thought she could keep an eye on it to take a quick look, not like she walked into walmart with the kid in the car, now that I am against completely. The only time I have left the kids in the car was when I had to run back into the house. People like to think that a thief would never be so STUPID as to steal a car let alone one with a kid in it and people around. The only one STUPID that I have read about is the actual car thief..."Oh he was a good guy and cared more about the kid to let him out" Really?? That makes it ok? And that is racist Obama Biden, your no better

It appears that the mom had a momentary lapse of judgement. Perhaps her toddler was sleeping and she did not want to wake him up as toddlers tend to get cranky when woken from a nap. She saw something at the garage sale and likely figured she would take a quick look. But, it was possibly hot or cold (not sure of temperatures) there so she left the a/c or heat on for her son. I don't think the typical parent thinks that someone is going to steal the car. Although if it were me, I would either take the toddler even though he may wake up or just skip the garage sale and go another time. I don't even leave my dog in a running car. Fortunately, this mom hopefully learned a lesson without harm to her son. Very lucky. No need for commentators to be nasty about it. I am sure she is getting enough flack from the boy's dad.

As for the thief, it sounds like he/she saw an opportunity to take a car without too much effort. Likely, the toddler woke up or the thief saw him in the rear view. The thief made the right decision in dropping off the toddler unharmed. Very lucky for them as well. Now, the thief may face charges for auto theft without kidnapping charges. At least it appears had some sense and did not panic and do something stupid or unforgiveable.

The question Capt Tripps...

Is did you leave your keys in the car with the car running while you ran back into the house? I think every parent on rare occasion has to run back into the house real quick becaue they forgot the backpack with wipes etc., but they usually take the keys with them.

Now, take that a step further. Would you leave your kids in the car with the car running while you go into a grocery store or some other place, even if it's "real quick"?

The only time the car is running with the kids in it and I am not is if my wife is in the car with them. End of story.

It's not about being "perfect". Its about not being lazy enough to shirk 2 minutes of effort that increase risk to your kid/s. Yeah, sometimes that 2 minutes of effort is hard to come up with when you're sleep deprived, stressed, and otherwise not your usual 100%. But you make the effort anyway, because they can't do it for themselves. That's part of being a parent.

While I agree this was a VERY stupid thing to do by the mother, I also understand that we all have lapses in judgement. Those condemning her so harshly are either not parents, or are pretending that they haven't done something stupid and had a close call with their child.

as for Clownswillkillyou - I think you also ate some stupid sandwiches - your comment, while funny, used the wrong "do". It is hard to take comments that criticize seriously when you don't know which word to use. That wasn't a typo - that was a lack of knowledge in grammar and vocabulary.

    mb,

You are correct, everyone has lapses in judgement. What I get upset with are judgements made nearly 100% out of being too lazy when it comes to some "parents" taking care of their children (or not taking care of them in some cases).

When I volunteer for afterschool activities it is VERY easy to tell which kids wanted to be there for the activity, and which kids were tossed off by their "parents" for free day care.

When their kids are bored to tears and turn towards disrupting others repeatedly to the point that I have to boot them, it is those same "parents" that try to get in my face and tell me that I'm wrong or how its someone else's fault that their kids are disrupting the activities. They don't like to hear about it because it threatens their free day care services. Never mind the point that the other kids that actually want to be there are having their enjoyment compromised...

Not that these same "parents" would take the time to (at the very least) work with their kids to find an activity they actually want to pursue...that would take "gasp" TIME and EFFORT...

Can't have that now can we?

*this is me, rolling my eyes*

Capt Tripps- Voted you up.. <3 the post, thanks for the common sense..

You notice half these perfect do gooders posting haven't said a damn thing about the scum that stole the car.. I blame the person that stole the car, because as far as I knew stealing a car was against the law- and having a momentary laps of judgement wasn't as long as you didn't cause major harm..

Granted mom made a stupid mistake but I bet any of you parents posting have made a stupid mistake or two, it's part of learning to be a parent..

Hell kiddo is sleeping and you have to go outside to do something, but you don't think about if that kid wakes up and gets in to something, or grabs a knife from a draw, or gets your unlocked gun and kills themselves in that 20 seconds you left the house.. But hey it was an honest mistake, right- especially when it comes to any of you sitting on here being arm chair criticizers.. Or are you helicopter parents that still breastfeed at 17 and carry them in baby backpacks at 15 because you are afraid of what they might or might not do.

Parenting is not easy, if this was the 2-3-4 time this has happened to this woman, we can chalk it up to her stupidity.. But I didn't read this has happened before to her, so I will cut her some slack, we aren't born parents, it's a learned thing and sometimes some of us need to learn more than others..

No Denver i have more common sense to blame someone else for his actions of stealing a car. So when do we not hold thieves accountable anymore.. I guess Denver where you are from it's okay to be a thief and a law breaker- it's okay to steal rather than to have the right to leave your car running with or without a kid in it..

I guess in your state if you dress provocative you deserve to be raped because rape shouldn't be against the law because you deserved it for dressing that way.. Oh how about this one, you left your child unattended outside and a molester rapes him, hey but that is your fault for leaving your kid outside to play.. Never the criminals fault, right???
It's sad you would rather not blame or hold the criminal responsible for his actions.. If the criminal hadn't stole the car, this wouldn't be in the news, don't ya think..

Yes i said "breeder" for a purpose, a "mother" wouldn't be in that position in the first place. My youngest is 9 and I still insist on holding her hand crossing the street even if there isn't a car in sight! Man, this story could have ended up being really horrific! No worries, lady - plenty more 2-year-olds where that one came from - no need to take any special care with the ones you already have.

I liked comment above that said the thief evidently had more regard for the child than the "mom". Or perhaps he/she just did not want to care for the wee one, or get caught with him in the car.

You guys are awfully harsh and judgmental. While she did use the poor judgment, she didn't intentionally put the child in harm's way. I know I've done things that after the fact seemed stupid. And once I even had child protective services called on me!

When my daughter was 5 (and up until then) I had hired a nanny to take care of her at our home. Needless to say, she had been well screened, had good references, and so on. One afternoon after arriving home from work (1 1/2 hour commute), there were two policemen outside my home, as well as my nanny. My daughter was in the arms of a next-door neighbor. Talk about a grand panic! Apparently the nanny had left my daughter sleeping so she could run to the store to pick up something. My daughter woke up, and when she couldn't find the nanny, she went to the window, and eventually the neighbor drove up. The neighbor saw her, and realized something was wrong since my car wasn't there. She stood at the window and chatted with my daughter for a minute, then ran to get her phone and called the police. She kept my daughter in sight the whole time, and returned to "chat" with her until the police came.

The police rang the doorbell, and my daughter answered the door. They asked who was home with her, and she replied no one, but she was fine, she was just playing in her room. About this time the nanny came home, utterly panicked that the police were there. By the time I got home an hour later, Child Protective Services had been called, and they arrived shortly after I did.

Good grief, I felt like I had entered an alternate universe! My friends and my former husband all thought I was a great mom, and I certainly did my best to be the super mom the we all try to be, but of course none of us can be! No one in my family had ever had any dealings with the police nor with CPS. Needless to say, the nanny was out the next morning and on a plane home. I had FOUR follow-up visits by CPS, to ensure the safety of my daughter. I am SO GRATEFUL to that neighbor and to the police. Even though I felt somewhat harassed by CPS, I was grateful to them, too, that they really did seem to care about my child.

What this story says to me that even if you are a good parent, things can happen that put your child in danger. So don't be so hard on this mother, and please, cut the racist comments, too. What she needs is some compassion and support, not all this hatred.

What an experience THAT was. Did I do anything wrong? I don't think so. Still, there were consequences of my being a parent beyond anything I had ever imagined.

The mother made a very serious mistake, but the car thief deliberately commited a serious crime and then compounded it by deliberately commiting the very same serious crime which the mother had committed carelessly but unintentionally. He put the two-year old into serious danger by abandoning him. Yet, so many of you land hard on the mother, but do not even mention the thief or let him off lightly. What he should have done is not stolen the car in the first place, but having stolen the car and found the boy, he should have turned around and taken him back, hoping his responsibility would have earned a certain amount of credit for him in the Court's eyes. Again, the mother is not without fault, but the serious consequences suggested by some of the posters are rediculous. A stiff fine, plus probation for six months--a year would be sufficient. NO ONE on this thread can tell me---at least, not truthfully--- that at some point in their lives they have not made a mistake which could have resulted in the death of themselves or some one else or both.

@cowtowntrucker - in this area, there are many, many people with Hispanic names who are American born citizens. A good number of them are from families that lived in Texas while it was still in Mexico, or while it was a country on its' own. The illegals are a minority among the Hispanics, and many illegals are just passing through to other states. They wouldn't visit garage sales.

@justme - cars with after-market remote starts do not need keys in ignition for the motor to run.

The idea is to warm up the car with doors and gearshift/steering locked - guess it could work in hot climates as a way to cool off the cabin before driving, or even while parked at a garage sale. If shopper-mom had one, her car and child would have been more secure. It could have still been illegal to leave the child unattended.

My gosh, people, I just can't believe how racist some of these comments are! Mexican, mother is a "breeder", probably illegal and therefore living on our money, and many other such unproven statements.

Now let's imagine that the family is Asian. Situation any different? Okay, let's imagine that they are a Black family. Any differences? And how about if they are a Caucasian family? What do you think--would the store have been different? Oh, no, none of these probably would have made a news story, would they?

Empathy, folks, where is your sense of empathy? And what about kindness? I think we ALL need more of that!

Sorry but I think you have that wrong, just because you leave your front door unlocked does not mean that I can walk into your house and take what I want, it is the same with the car, maybe it wasn't smart but no one has the right to just take what doesn't belong to them. The dumb idiot is the one who stole the car.

You are correct the thief is the idiot but no right thinking mother 1) leaves a child in a car alone and 2) leaves the car running. Even if there are no car thieves around the kid could wake up and inadvertently put the car in gear, the kid could wake up and get out of the car and get hit by traffic, someone could kidnap the kid and leave the car. You just DO NOT leave your kids alone in a car, not even if they are sleeping. If it is inconvenient to wake them up and take them with you then DO NOT STOP regardless of how inviting the garage sale.

          Agreed, SIESTASIS.

There is a difference between committing a crime and negligence in allowing a crime to be easier to commit.

          Thieves = crime

          Mother = negligent

My ex-wife once left the kids in the car with the engine running to go into a supermarket for a quick purchase. She also had our 2 year old son in the passenger front seat without a car seat. She came out of the store just in time to see our son bat the gearshift into drive and the car started moving. She was able to jump into the drivers seat while the car was moving to stop it.

The kids told me about it when I got home from work, but she placed all of the blame on our son.

No car seat. No seat belt. No parking brake. No brains. Our three other kids were in the car at the time. Maybe if she had been arrested she wouldn't have received custody of the kids in the divorce.

So sorry Rich that your ex wife got custody of the kids. When you came home that day and the kids told yo what happened, you should of called the police right then and gotten a police report, just to have an official record of it. You might of been sleeping on the couch for awhile, but oh well, you care about your kids! +9Then later on when you were divorcing, your attorney could of whipped out that official police report and by the Grace of God you could of gotten full custody. I can't believe she blamed the baby for knocking the gear shift to make the car go. No seat belt, no car seat...Go figure!

In my experience, most right thinking mothers leave their kids in the car for short periods of time. Literally, I have to imagine every parent has done it at some point in time. Everyone does stupid @!$%#, most of us are lucky enough to get away with it. Some of us are smart and honest enough not to go making fun of others when theirs runs out tho.

            Beverly and Luke,

Generally, except for domestic abuse or direct knowledge of a heinous crime, spouses filing a complaint with police is sort of frowned upon. Even in court as a witness spouses are not usually expected to testify. In some states it may be against the rules to even call the spouse to testify against the accused.

Since no damage was done the police may not have taken it very seriously at the time--but it would have been documented for use later!

He was five, the car was OFF, keys with me, doors locked, and the weather was nice.

Stop the racist ranting and cut the Mom some slack. She used poor judgment, and I'm sure she will never do it again. She is not the first mother to jump out for a second, she won't be the last. I agree she should not have done this, but you people are being pretty harsh. I'll bet most of you have never had to run errands with a two year old, dragging them in and out of the car seat all day. Or spent all afternoon trying to get a two year old to sleep, only to have them fall asleep right when you need to get out of the car. She made a mistake, but she is not the criminal here--back off a bit.

You're right it isn't a race issue. I've seen Moms and Dads of all races leave their little ones in an idling car, while they went into a store. Granted, most weren't in the store more than a couple of minutes, but it's not worth the risk. My friend's four year old son decided to learn how to drive in reverse down the driveway while his Mom went back for her wallet. Thank goodness she came outside before her car took out the neighbors mailbox.

I'm glad that this woman's cute little boy didn't get hurt and maybe she'll learn to never leave her child alone in a car .

Cars get stolen every day that are locked and not running. Cars are also taken as a result of 'car jacking". So you really have no way of knowing what this car thief is capable of doing or what he would have done to get that car.

This so-called Mother should face charges of negligence. She left her child in an unlocked and running car to stop for a garage sale? This is exactly the kind of self-centered behavior that results in children being left in cars during hot weather and dying! How important is it to her to patronize someone's sale to rid themselves of junk they don't want? I don't feel the least bit sorry for her. She's unfit to be a Mother. Her need for instant gratification has obviously overridden any good sense she has.
How pathetic that all she had to do was either skip the sale or just turn off the car, pick up her child and lock the car, then she could buy all the useless junk she wanted without incident.

Why do people do this stuff.. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR KIDS.. I live around Pittsburgh and we just had a case where a mother left her two 3 year old twins home alone to find her 15 year old daughter who stole her pot.. The kids caught the house on fire and died.. These people should be charged with child endangerment.. I tell my kids that if I cannot reach out and grab you when we are out in public you are too far away from me.. I am so glad this little boy is ok and the thief had some morals or this could be a completely different story.

What kind of mother would leave her child in a running car for a garage sale. How stupid is that? She was just asking for something to happen. What if the child got loose and put the car into drive? What if fumes from the exhaust were going into the cabin of the car? Keys left in car running, especially with no driver would be a thief's dream come true. I really hope the mother learned from all of this, because next time she could not be so lucky.

The idiot is definitely the thief. While it may seem the mother used poor judgement, I personally don't know the entire situation. I am sure we are all grateful the thief had enough sense to let the child go free.

On another note, I see people do this all the time. In front of hotels, or in front of their house to unload groceries, or at the gas station. In fact, leaving keys in the car (on or off) and children is so commonplace in our society.

I find it interesting when a person of color who doesn't speak English and is casually dressed we automatically shout "ignorance" and suggest the person return to their country of origin. That is ignorance.
