FORT WORTH - A man stole a car with a sleeping toddler inside Thursday afternoon.

Fabiola Garcia said the thief jumped into her still-running car when she stopped at a garage sale at about 3:30 p.m. in South Henderson Street in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her son, 2-year-old Ricardo Calderon, was sleeping inside the car.

"They came across the street and told me the little boy was in the car, and I called the police back and told them it was a kidnapping," witness Bobby Duncan said.

More news from NBCDFW.com

Police say the car thief didn't go very far before stopping the car and letting little boy out about 15 minutes later.

Garcia said she thanks God that Ricardo was not harmed.

The stolen car was still missing late Thursday. Police were searching for the thief.

WHY did this incredibly stupid mother leave her car running and especially with her sleeping child inside ???!!!! I would feel embarrassed to have my face shown on the news after something that idiotic. At the very least, she should have taken the child out. Heck, we never even leave our dog unattended in the car.

I don't know John. From the majority of posts on this report, it sounds like the majority do leave their children in a vehicle. Guess it's the new American way as very few see any thing wrong with doing such.

Another fine example of everything wrong in this country. Why will this idiot get a trial?Free lawyer, food, drink and a place to sleep? Why?Until we get tough and implement zero tolerance for this crap it will only get worse. He should get a swift trial and once proven quilty he is taken out back and gased or shot.Eventually these fools will get the hint. These bums need to learn that you just don't steal someones car for any reason. It's strange that so many americans have no problem dropping bombs on women and children in countries deemed evil but in our own back yard we put up with this constant idiot mantality..Just call these scum collateral damage like the women and babies in Iraq. The mom is equally as stupid.Shame on her.

At least the thief was smart and dropped the child off in the middle of traffic where as we all know, is the safest place for a child.

She also needs to go to school and learn that carbon monoxide (the silent killer) could have taken her son also. If that happens - he's dead. The person that stole the car did her a favor. At least the kid is safe.

She's Very lucky she got the kid back.

Kids raising babies, That should be the next thing they outlaw. I'm sure this girl loves her baby as much as anyone else would love theirs but that doesn't mean she couldn't use some parenting classes on SAFETY.

People need to remember, Kids live with our mistakes right along with the parent and usually they get the shorter end of the stick. All it takes is One stupid mistake for you to have the Biggest regret of your life. She's lucky she's going to get a second chance.

OK, first rule. NEVER leave your car running without you in it. I worked with a woman who did this outside of a convenience store and her car was stolen and never recovered. She ended up having to spend over $3000 just to payoff the stolen car because it was a newer car, and the insurance covered less than what she owed on it.

Then she had to buy another car also. Total outlay was over $4000 for leaving the car running.

I always take the key out, and lock the doors. With remote locks, how difficult is it?

The car thief probably took that car straight to Mexico.

To bad he didn't take the whole family with him.

This could have ended so differently. Two years old! Suppose someone else picked him up or he stepped out into the street and got hit by a car! The mother was totally irresponsible too, leaving the child in a running vehicle, at the very least she should be inconvenienced with parenting classes and or a fine. I hope the law throws the book at the lazy bum who stole the car rather than work to own one himself.

This woman (and i put that lightly) is no kind of mother in any sense of the word. She's so upset her child was stolen...the child would not have been taken if she actually cared about him and DIDN'T leave him alone in a car..nevermind if the keys were left also, that's just plain stupid...but the child...hopefully this horrible woman will be locked away for a very long time for endangering the life of that child, neglect, etc...

Thank God. A VERY foolish woman, never learve a child in a car, running or not. Never!

You can see, she is a child herself. She will never make that mistake again, I'm sure.

Common sense is what is lacking. She needs to be ordered to take a parent class on how to be a good parent. Anyone who would do that in this day and age is really pretty stupid. Hopefully she is smart enough not to ever do that again.

Gusto, the problem with that is, little Ricardo (and he is an adorable little guy) is most likely an American citizen. She may be illegal, but I'd bet he isn't. I'd bet he was born in Fort Worth Hospital, and the hospital bill was paid with your taxdollars. I'd also bet she has a legal drivers licence in the state of Texas, and is getting a check each month to suppoert the child, even though she is here illegal. You just can't seperate a child from his Mom, just because she is an ignorant wetback.

                  Thats UNAMERICAN!!

send her back and make the kids voluntary.

She could leave them with legal family members or take them if she wants them.

She had 5 kids with her. How much has she already cost tax payers?

Let's hope she has no more children, i'm sure they are being cared for by the taxpayers anyway.

Why do these f'ckin' ppl keep leaving their kids in running cars or cars w/keys in them?!!!! My god! How many stories like this do we read every week?! One would think people would stop and think but I guess that's just too much to ask for. I never left my kids in the car alone running or not!!!! In my mind, this parent and any parent who does this should face a penalty of some sort. Maybe walk around wearing a sign that states the thoughtless and unbelievable danger she put her child in.Or perhaps lose her child for a period of time and be denied access to her child during this time. Something.... It just boggles my mind that people seem to think we live in a safe world where you can just assume no harm will come to them our they ones they love no matter what. Sure, go ahead, just leave your child unattended in a car.. Let your children walk un-escorted at young ages.. Let little girls walk around in slut attire at 6 yrs old. Only, if you are going to do sh1t like this, expect the worst to happen and it will be partially your fault when it does!!!

So this thief "let" the kid out of the car? I doubt this jerk was motivated by anything good. He kicked the kid out and left him on the street to fend for himself is more likely because he knew that if he kept the kid it would bring a whole world of pain down on him.

WOW!! I can't believe (actually, I can) all the people on here who want to berate this mother instead of the degenerate who stole her car! The child was sleeping and she stopped at a garage sale (outside, in broad daylight, car probably in full view). Far be it for her to trust other people enough to not think that some degenerate opportunist would steal her vehicle under those conditions. Granted, it obviously wasn't the wisest choice on her part, but you all are making her out to be a bigger criminal than the thief! Keep throwing those stones, though. One of them is bound to bounce back...

Any self respecting mother, (or father) would be outraged at a mother leaving a child in a running vehicle. Or, just leaving a two year old, unattended anywhere. Thats just ignorance, that should never be condoned. I have a 22 month old grandson, who live in my home, and I know how quick they can disappear, or get into something they shouldn't. We are not over-protective at all. But damn girl. a two year old should NEVER be out of sight!

                                          Sensible Woman,

One thing you and all these other people who are all about how the mother isn't the villain are missing is that none of us who think she is partially responsible and are outraged by her behavior are even remotely relieving the thief of his guilt in all this. The thief's guilt is a no-brainer for any reasonably intelligent individual so we see no reason to go over that part of the story. The fact that this parent and so many parents do this kind of irresponsible and dangerous thing sets us off and we will vent our outrage at the mother responsible for leaving her child in the car which was unlocked and running thus putting her child in grave danger. This is on her. The thief just saw an opportunity and took it. Yes, the thief needs to be caught and punished, but he didn't put her child in tha car and leave it running for some a$$hole to come around and steal it with a sleeping child in it.

Laughable. There should be a placard on your genitals that says "don't procreate unless you have the brains to care for your children.

If you are stupid enough to leave your child in a car with the keys in the ignition, your contributions to the gene pool won't be of much value anyway.
