Cop jumps from patrol car to tackle moving motorcyclist in San Diego

An officer pursuing a potentially stolen motorcycle in Mission Valley, San Diego, was dragged down a street after attempting to stop the motorist, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The pursuit began late Thursday at about 10 p.m. near Mission Center Road and Hazard Center Drive, police said.

The officer was responding to a report of a stolen motorcycle when he saw the motorcycle and began following it.

The motorcyclist fled up the hill to Murray Ridge Road.

In an attempt to stop the motorcyclist, the officer jumped from his patrol car and grabbed the motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist continued to flee with the officer still holding on. The officer was dragged for an unknown distance until the motorcyclist lost control and crashed, police said.

Authorities took the motorcyclist into custody.

The officer was not injured, however there were three incidents earlier this week in which officers were injured on the job.

On Monday, an officer was punched during a scuffle with a suspect outside a convenience store at Florida and El Cajon Boulevard in University Heights.

Then, later the same day, a woman was arrested for battery on a peace officer after she punched the officer at the downtown trolley station at American Plaza and India Street.

The next day, an officer was attacked by a man along the side of the road in Mission Bay. Authorities on the scene said a father trying to drive his 21-year-old son to a mental health facility crashed the car after the son became violent.

What the article failed to note what what happened to the out-of-control police car after the cop jumped out while pretending to be a stunt double in an action flick, it ran time three cars injuring one innocent bystander. Cops should not be allowed to watch the show COPS, nor should they be allowed to watch action movies depicting cops being "rogue". If movies and video games are the cause of all the mass murders we have then the same can be said for the affect it has on our gungho police force. They watch these very unrealkistic movies of cops shooting the town up to catch one shoplifter and they think they are all Bruce Willis. Cops are human and the same things that affect civilians affect cops, perhaps even more so because they have a badge and a gun that give them power over the rest of us, the information they recieve on and off the job should be monitor closely to assure it is not adversly affecting their ability to "protect and serve".

OK , so the cop jumps out of his squad car and nuthuggs a stealer of a motorcycle until the crash occurred...

WTF is controlling the squad car ??!? So, WHAT did the squad car shmash into??

Maybe the cop had something to prove. Maybe the cop wanted to, I dunno, show the public that he isn't Trigger Happy. (??) The crazy cop COULDA pulled out his cervix revolver and shot the motorcycle stealer. BUT NO. The Gung Ho Cop did NOT shot the stealer. The crazy cop jumped outta his own squad car, and became the motorcycle stealer's instant biker mamma, until the motorcycle crashed.

This is NOT an act of bravery. It is PURE STUPIDITY. Michael Moore outta do a documentary on crazy cops.

Only goes to show law enforcement's main motivation is not in the best interest of the victim, but in their ability to "get their man" and damned be any innocents caught in the crossfire.

Their priorities are upside down and why so many in the public have lost respect for them.

Based on the report I would think that the officer got a bit carried away (pun intended). But seriously this was not a fleeing murderer, kidnapper, rapist, terrorist, etc. so to risk his life and that of innocent bystanders and even the thief in such a foolhardy way shows poor judgment. We trust police to make these decisions about the correct amount of force to use when apprehending a criminal, this is an example of what NOT to do.

I don't waste my time remembering the character names in violent hollyweird movies as I have better things to do with my time. You should do the same as it is the hollywierd types that want to ban your firearms and your ability to protect you and your family while they have armed body guards.

That's not so far from the truth. The statistics say that your risk of being injured or killed by a firearm increase 22xs if you own a gun. That includes accidental discharges, deliberate discharges, and your kid getting hold of the thing and shooting you. If you have a gun in the house, be very, very nice to your wife and kids.

According to the obituary's i looked up.......

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense ,who has
been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since
his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be
remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

          - Knowing when to come in out of  the rain;
          - Why the early bird gets the worm;
          - Life  isn't always fair;
          - And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable
strategies (adults, not children, are in
          charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged
with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
           suspended from school
for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an
unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in
           disciplining their unruly
          children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not
inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have
           an abortion..

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and
criminals received better treatment than their victims.

          Common Sense took
a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

The article sounds like his car was coming to a stop and was rolling because the bike had slowed down which would explain the tackle not dumping the bike . A fast maneuver but no Rambo alright . Whoever told the story or reported it are maybe a little misleading and shouldn't be writing police stories or reports .

THIS was this officers crowning achievement? Not only did he DRIVE his car to catch up to the suspect. But, no mention of what happened to the rolling 2,000 pounds of steel he jumped from, (his car). How much danger did he place the public in with this stunt. Back when I was working a beat, (in the 80's), I regularly ran suspects down on foot, (while wearing about 50 pounds of gear). I chased suspects for as long and far as it took without the use of a car. I did backflips off 2 story buildings landing on nothing but wood pallets pursuing suspects. I ran THROUGH wooden fences, (breaking quite a few in the process). I chased down fleeing suspects who were driving cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and skateboards. All on foot. Most cops I see today are fat and lazy. When testifying in court one day against a former high school track star I had arrested I was asked by the Prosecuting attorney, " What do you do for a physical workout when you are not at work"? I replied, "Three days a week I run 10 kilometers each day. On my off days I swim 1 mile each day" . The look I got from the jury was one of amazement. I was just doing my job at its core. Without the benefit of a "car".

Bike was probably worth under $3,000 and the damages including lifetime disability payments in excess of $100,000.

Like a bulldogger at a rodeo! Did the cop twist the guy's head before the motorcycle crashed? Eha!

This is what happens when the minimally(??) qualified get a badge. There should be an IQ test and ongoing judgement/ethics and drug testing for anyone who has that much authority over the public.

He jumped from a moving vehicle to stop a motorcycle? That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Brainless or on drugs IF you ask me.

Don't be silly, of course there's an I.Q. & drug test ..It varies from place to place but around here you have to score below a 75 ...and of course have be able to prove you have your own supplier. The stuff in the evidence room naturally belongs to the head of the drug task force and chief ya know.

Not sure who is the bigger idiot, the thief or the cop.
