A New Jersey high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student, authorities said.
Jennalin Garcia-Calle, a 28-year-old algebra teacher at Plainfield High School, was arrested Thursday in Davie, Fla., and charged with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse.
According to prosecutors, Garcia-Calle began the relationship with the 16-year-old boy in December. Prosecutors allege that at least three sexual encounters occurred in a classroom inside the school.
"The boy is not at a stage in his life where he's able to make that type of legal and quite frankly mature enough decision," said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.
Authorities became aware of the alleged relationship after the student told a family member what had happened. Students at the high school said the boy also bragged about the relationship to classmates.
"They both knew what they were doing, they both knew they were wrong," said senior Imani Campbell.
Prosecutors said Garcia-Calle realized her relationship with the boy had been discovered, prompting her to check into a rehabilitation center in Florida, as well as send the boy messages asking him to erase certain evidence. U.S. marshalls traced those messages and arrested Garcia-Calle.
She is being held without bond in Florida, awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
The Plainfield Board of Education has placed Garcia-Calle on an administrative suspension.
Information on an attorney for Garcia-Calle was not immediately available.

During the great war, they had no problem sending these same "kids", only they called them "men" at that time, off to die for "the cause". I love how they claim you are old enough to go fight in a war, but not old enough for sex or to drink... Kids as young as 15 went to war. And the average age of marriage was 17. Its the age my great-grandparents were when they got married.
I was old enough at 16. Thats when I started working, living on my own, and supporting myself. I put myself through school. No one would have gotten away with telling me what I was old enough for, back then.

The boy bragging about it shows immaturity. When I was sexually active at 17, it was nobody's business except my girlfriend and me. He was too young, unprepared. The teacher should have known better.

Thank you, Milton. No male here wishing they were so lucky at age 16 has answered what they would think if it was their daughter and a much older male authority figure. They just bang their chests and talk like they were still in the boy's locker room in HS. Wonder if they would like it if a guy bragged about having with their daughter.
These stories always remind me of the lack of logic in charging a child as an adult if he commits serious crime, while at the same time insisting that a child of the same age is never mature enough to consent to sexual activity. Somehow, committing murder automatically makes you an adult, regardless of age, but committing sex does not.

Am I the only one who thinks they need to come up with a different criteria for these cases? A 16-yo having sex with a teacher is the sort of coming of age story that movies are made for, songs are written about. I mean come on!!! It is not the same thing as a male teacher who is touching girls privates in an elementary school classroom. I'm sure the sentencing takes these things into consideration, but they need to come up with some new classifications of crime. This case is NOT rape, it is NOT sexual ASSAULT or CHILD ABUSE. BTW she was only 8 years older than the kid. We need to drop the puritanism and have a reality check.

as anyone else noticed that they only do national stories when it's a beautiful woman involved?. in colorado springs last week a 40 year old science teacher slept with a female student. and even worse a guy that was volunteering as a coach slept with many young men. and that wasn't national. years ago a female teacher also did the same but she was 45 so she never made the national news. they all blew their careers to dust. and that coach is facing jail time. oh year I forgot another coach in town who slept with a female student. it's about power though because if they wanted just sex they could find somewhere else. other than the pedophile coach guy though.

Seems like prosecutor Theodore Romankow is jealous. I don't think the intent of the law is to protect young men from sexual activity with older teachers. He was probably just trying to earn extra credit for algebra.
