Doctors to former NYC Mayor Ed Koch: You can leave hospital but lay off the salt

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch was released Saturday from the hospital after a weeklong stay for treatment of fluid in his lungs and swollen ankles -- his third hospitalization in recent months.

Koch, 88, had expected to remain at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital through the weekend, but doctors decided to let him out Saturday, The Associated Press reported, citing a spokesman.

Koch was admitted last Saturday night. He lost 16 pounds of water weight in the hospital, the AP reported, and was told to limit his salt intake. At a short press conference at his release, Koch sat in a wheelchair with an oxygen tube in his nose and said he would continue treatment at home.

A physician with him, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, said Koch still had a way to go to restore his energy level. Koch was hospitalized in December with a respiratory infection and in September with anemia.

Koch was mayor from 1978 to 1989 and a congressman from New York from 1969 to 1979. A decade after leaving the mayor's office, he spent two years as a television show judge on "The People's Court." He has remained active on Twitter, where he occasionally tweets as @mayoredkoch.

Well, with this shocking news, as well as honor among thieves, Nanny Bloomberg now plans to have every eatery in NYC do without salt -- completely. Bloomberg figures the absence of salt in the city's menus will totally cure heart disease, as well as create a black market for salt, which he plans to invest heavily in to pad his own pocket. Of course, salt in moderation (as in everything) is harmless. High sodium in a diet can easily be controlled, but lack of salt will not cure heart disease. It may not even help your heart at all.

Have you been shooting crack/heroin again? OK. Without salt, but, are you shooting speedballs again?

ROFL at a moron.

Well, ya gotta give Bloomberg credit. It appears that he has taken control of the doctors too! How did Koch ever live to 88 years? Bloomberg said he shouldn't have. His doctors say he shouldn't have. The government says he shouldn't have. Oh well, take a pill and call me in the morning. Don't take two, Obama won't allow it.

According to this article Koch was both a congressman and the mayor at the same time, from '78 to '79.

Koch was mayor from 1978 to 1989 and a congressman from New York from 1969 to 1979.

Funny, I did not know you were allowed to hold multiple elected offices at once. Just once it would be nice if MSNBC would at least check an article before they posted it.

In any case, Koch has lived longer than average and certainly long enough to eat whatever he wants. Too bad if Bloomberg has his way everyone's diet and portion sizes will be dictated by the city government. I wonder how Koch feels about these inane food regulations that Bloomberg keeps pushing.

"High sodium in a diet can easily be controlled"

Not true... If people knew the amount of salt that they eat every day without knowing it, they would be shocked... Salt is put in almost everything that we eat, especially processed foods... The average American diet is truly unhealthy by just the amount of salt added in foods...

If people would just read the ingredients on the packaging... Just about every food has salt added, to prolong the shelf life, not your live...

After two heart attacks, I was amazed to find out just how much salt that I ingested everyday...

Could be, but all persons need to restrict their salt intake. Salt or sodium retains water/fluid. Those that can't do without salt should be using potassium cloride, NOT sodium cloride. Salt is really not good for anyone. Foods contain enough of it naturally. I use the substitute and can NOT tell the difference. I may also live a day or two longer...

Salt's the least of Koch's worries. It's the Liberal Kool-Aid that's made him ab Old Looney Toon.

Ed was a great mayor. If you are too young to remember or not from NYC you can just be quiet.

The only great thing I remember him doing was giving city workers a 6,6,6 raise. Three years without a contact, lots of OT. The retro was killer, life was good.

          How my doing : )

A body needs salt but too much will kill you. A DAILY intake should be around 2,000 - 2,500 MG. Just ONE meal at a restaurant has an average of 2,000 MG. We should eat at least 3 meals a day. Do the math.

Too little sodium will kill you also so we have to learn how to moderate our intake.

Check your favorite meals and get ready to be shocked at how much sodium is in everything.

Salt can be a killer latter in life, sugar too! Salt (NaCL) Sodium Chloride, makes you retain water.

When you do find low sodium canned goods, they charge you more. Let's see, less salt more money. Yeah that makes sense!

Sugar free products too, they charge you more for less ingredients.

Read the package. Many products are loaded with salt and sugar. Way more then is needed.

Celtic salt or sea salt is better for you as it contains quite a few minerals the body normally doesn't get eating processed food (for those of you who will argue it is no different than table salt, feel free to search the topic on the internet to get some info and "you make the call"). You should eliminate table salt. If you eat a lot of cruciferous veggies, fruit (mainly berries), some nuts, lean sources of protein, take in some Omega 3 fats and get some sleep and exercise you will statistically improve your chance of avoiding a lot of lifestyle-related illnesses. But, living to 88 is pretty good, hope Mayor Koch gets better and can have a decent quality of life for the remainder of his time with us.
