Man gets his last Whopper Jr. during his funeral procession

A Pennsylvania man who died at age 88 was buried Saturday -- but not before a stop at Burger King on the way to the cemetery for a Whopper Jr.

The York Daily Record reported that David S. Kime Jr. of West York loved those burgers -- along with other fast food -- so his family and friends followed the hearse through the drive-through window at the Manchester Burger King. The manager said 40 Whopper Jr. burgers were prepared, including one for Kime, who died Jan. 20.

"He always lived by his own rules," Linda Phiel, one of Kime's three daughters, told the Daily Record. "His version of eating healthy was the lettuce on the Whopper Jr."

Phiel said her 5-foot-tall father was a borderline diabetic for years and had pacemaker, but he began eating what he wanted after his wife died 25 years ago, according to the Daily Record.

"He was not prejudiced," Phiel told the Daily Record. "He would go to any fast food place anyone invited him to."

After a while, she said, she gave up lecturing him: "When you're 88 years old, I guess you've earned the right to do what you want to do."

A photo in the Daily Record shows Phiel placing her dad's last burger atop his casket amid a spray of flowers.

My wife who had been very ill for many years got broncitis for the second time in 3 months. We had planned to stop at McD's after her Dr's appointment that day because she had developed a love for the $1.00 double cheesburger . She worked as a manager at Hardees for years before her illnesses and cravedfast food. Anyway the Dr told her she needed to go to the hospital aagin she was very ill. she said NO i'm going to McD's he said you have to go to the hospital she replied no I have to go to Mcd's...lol He said OKay go to McD's on your way to the hospital. So we did. she had congestive heart failure while there and passed away a week later. Her last meal really was that McD's double cheesburger because she as on feeding tubes after that. This was in December of 2008 She was a strong willed woman just like this seems to have been.

Duffy to O’Toole:

When I die, O’Toole, promise me you will get a bottle of the best Irish whiskey and pour it over me grave?

Sure and I will Duffy, if you don’t mind that I pass it through me bladder first…

May he rest in piece…

Gotta love the media spin, so is MSN suggesting that BK food killed him and had nothing to do with the fact that he was 88, and was his time? My life to live, not yours. If you don't like how I live then might I suggest you do un-natural acts upon yourself, because I do not live for you. "Cogito ergo sum, I think, therefore I am"

My grandfather smoked cigars and ate grilled cheese sandwishes and lived into his mid-80's. He was active though, and that seems to make a big difference. My dad went downhill quickly once his knees gave out and he was housebound.

Trust, I have to agree with Back here. I, certainly, didn't see any negative BK (or fast food) spin here. What I did see was a story about a man who, after his wife died, decided he was going to enjoy whatever remained of his life by living it on his terms rather than clawing for a few extra days by doing things he really didn't like.

When my father was diagnosed with cancer at 59, the doctors told him they needed to remove one lung. He had been a life long smoker and had only 45% capacity in one lung and 43% in the other. He asked the doctor what life would be like if they took the lung. He was told that he would be "very comfortable sitting in a chair." He passed on the surgery and, instead, he went home, drank his martinis, worked on his boat and mowed his lawn and, 9 months later, he died. I have always had a lot of respect for his decision because he refused to give up everything.

All I can say is "way to go"!!!!

You live a good, clean, healthy life when you are younger because you have a family to raise and support and to set a good example. After your work is done, you have earned the right to live life your way and do all the things you gave up in your younger days.

My mom was the best mom ever. After her child rearing days were over, she started doing as many things as she physically and financially could, things that she had not been able to do in her younger days.

One memory in particular stands out. She had always wanted to go to a male strip show. So on one trip to Vegas when she was a matronly 62, she took all the girls out to such a show. By far she enjoyed herself more than her substantially younger companions. At the end of the show, when the guys invited the audience on stage, she was the first one up there and had a grand old time dancing. We much younger girls were too self-conscious to participate. The audience loved it and so did the guys.

When she passed, my heart broke and has never quite healed. However, memories like the one in Vegas still make me smile. Her life had been very hard and so I thank God that she at least had a little time to enjoy some fun things and show a side of her that I never had known. First my parent, and then my best, best, best friend.

So, having survived for 88 years, this fellow EARNED the right to live his last days exactly as he wished.

    Remember:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up and totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!

If anyone cares, the BK Whopper Jr., without cheese or mayo, is lower in fat and calories than most fast food sandwiches. The burger isn't fried, and when you add the lettuce, tomato and onion and skip the fries, I find it a filling lunch. And, hey, the guy was 88! I doubt I will live that long. My in-laws are in their 80's and still live on salads and egg whites. If I am still around at that age, I am eating beef and butter!

The sound effects later, during the graveside services will be HILARIOUS!!!

My sister was always careful about her weight and to eat healthy foods. She would often say, "That's not good for you" Unfortunately she ended up with ovarian cancer and towards the end was unable to eat anything. She would take a small bite just to have the taste in her mouth. I resolved then and there that moderation was the key. I was not going to spend my life denying myself only to die in my 50's. Enjoy what you like but try for balance. And honestly, at 88 he lived a full life and as hard as I'm sure it was for his family to say goodbye he lived the way he wanted to which is what we should all do.

It's not a lie. Everything must be done in moderation. If your body is healthy, a hamburger is not going to damage anything if you are not returning numerous times per week. No protein diet has been shown to cause mental imbalances (has the same symptoms of dementia), fruit diets kill your pancreas, soy can only be tolerated to some extent, etc. There are many limitations, moderation is the key and variation is a must. Have you taken a look at how some vegans look, death warmed over with next to no body fat (and a healthy body does need a percentage of fat). This has an adverse reaction on the system if you don't supplement the needs with a similar product that the body needs. I am not saying we need BK but typically it is not a big deal if you limit the consumption and get exercise and make sure you stock up in what your body needs to survive.

I totally agree with you, Freedom. My grandmother lived to 98, eating what she wanted, but in moderation. My spouse's paternal grandmother ate what she wanted, in moderation, including fast food. My mother-in-law would tell her she had to lose weight and that eating what she did was not healthy. However, that grandmother passed several months after reaching 100. There is something to be said for moderation.

        To paraphrase Lewis Carroll:

What matters it how long we live? There is another shore you know, upon the other side.

The further off from England, the nearer to France,

Then do not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance!

But if this is the only life you think you will ever have, and there is no hereafter, then there is no God, god, karma, eternity, whatever, then yeah, your life sucks, especially without that hope, faith, or belief that there are more bright futures ahead, and that this is not the only place where we will ever live.

My father didn't smoke, do drugs or even medical drugs. Our family didn't do drugs at all. But my father did work 2 and a half jobs, even at 65, when he died. Yes, I believe Stress killed him - Massive Heart Attack right before he clocked into work at 11pm. Mom died just over 5 years later with a couple of health problems and she did smoke and she was just days short of her 70th birthday. Go figure that one out. I know of a man who died at 80 about 3 yrs ago and his wife who was 83 then is still alive today. Neither of them smoke. He did until sometime during his kids were young.

facisthater: The rapists and murderers only appear to have gotten away with their crimes, but rest assured that they, like all who have ever lived will stand before the Almighty and answer for the deeds done in the body. I think the saddest lives are the self righteous, brittle boned, sunken eyed, sallow, leathery skinned, old prune marathoners who point their meatless bony fingers and screech F-A-A-A-T-T-T-Y-Y-Y at every healthy curve.

Compulsive overeating is a disease of addiction. It's similar to alcohol, drug and sex addiction. It requires treatment and therapy to overcome. It's a medical condition. Many compulsive overeaters are the children of alcoholics or drug addicts. Their addiction issues go back for generations.

Good genetics and luck are the keys to getting past the 60-65 hump. Diet, exercise, and avoiding dangerous drugs are important, but some people are "blessed" with the good genetics to do pretty much what they want and live a longer life than the average.

                        Diet, exercise.

Orange county Ca. sheriff was walking 5-10 miles every morning before shift (ex marine) and died on his walking path of heart attack at the age of 59 .

The sheriff may have had an underlying heart condition that he wasn't aware of, and walking 5 to 10 miles per day may have been too much for his heart to handle, which is likely why he died of a heart attack at a premature age. Too many men refuse to get regular checkups with a doctor and diseases go undetected until it's too late. They don't know they have a dangerous health condition lurking and start an extensive exercise program which lands them in deep trouble. Periodic exams would rule out or catch potentially fatal health problems before they get out of hand. Healthy habits and moderation are important to a longer life, especially if you don't have good genetics on your side.

Too many men think if they exercise they're bullet proof. My brother-in-law exercised, smoked and ate beef like it was endangered. The issue was his cholesterol which was too high. He thought if he took his meds he'd be fine.

Not so fast; his coronary artery was 99% blocked by all the animal fat he ate when his stress test came up. He did not enjoy his quadruple bypass, the same procedure his father underwent 27 years ago. My husband, his brother saw the way the wind blew and became a vegetarian more than 20 years ago. He requires ZERO cholesterol-lowering medications.

Just woke up, little groggy, does BK still have flame broiled hamburgers? I think Hardys does, but not sure. The places that have switched to processed soft cheese are the real heart killers. Talk about plugging the arteries! LOL

I think Arbys uses that cheap heart plugging processed cheese. I try too stay away from fast food that wants to go the cheap way instead of the real stuff. Getting harder every year. I have switched to eating salads now, but even the chicken they put on those things are too salty. If these places would just give you the basics, lets you add your salt, etc, then people would be able to eat more healthy food. We know what we shouldn't eat, but with fast food you don't have it your way.

Bob's wife Marge was extremely worried about Bob's health. You see Bob was constantly out drinking, smoking and eating fast food. Finally, after months of nagging, Marge finally convinced him to go to the doctor. On the day of the appoinment, just as Bob expected, the doctor told him if he didn't stop his drinking, smoking and eating fast food, he was going to die at a young age. Bob thanked the doc, told him that he understood and that he would take his words under advisement. When he got home, Marge asked him what the doctor said and Bob, looking her in the eye, said "Marge, sweetie, love of my life, he said I am going to die young."

                              RIP Mr. Kime.

My dad was buried with a pack of cigs and a lighter. He made my adopted brother promise he would make sure he had them. My brother had this beautiful lighter when he came home for the funeral but after the funeral he was borrowing my mom's so I asked him what happened to his. He smiled and said, "Rudy made me promise that he'd have cigarettes and a lighter so I gave him mine" I think that made me cry more than any other part of the day...just because it was so like my father and my brother.

Meals with her were pretty bleak....she was on few meds even when she died at 94 of cancer. Her brother was a diabetic, quite over-weight and ate whatever he wanted.. said he'd rather eat well and enjoy his food, even if it shortened his life ... he died at 102.
