Gunman kills officer, wounds two deputies after fatal trailer fire

A police officer was killed and two deputies critically wounded when a man opened fire on them in southern Louisiana, authorities said Saturday.

State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons told NBC station WDSU of New Orleans that a Chitimacha tribal officer and two St. Mary's Parish sheriff's deputies were responding to a fire at a trailer in Charenton when the man began shooting.

Wilbert Thibodeaux was arrested and was being treated for a gunshot wound, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported. It was unclear if he had been charged.

The burned body of a man was found in the mobile home after the fire was extinguished, the Advocate reported.

The Advocate gave this account of the shooting, citing a State Police news release and a phone interview with Hammons:

After the report of the fire and of a man armed with a shotgun, the Chitimacha officer found Thibodeaux walking down the road. Thibodeaux opened fire and the Chitimacha officer died on the scene. The deputies then arrived and were fired on.

Thibodeaux was wounded in a shootout, but it was unclear who shot him.

Fire consumed the trailer, a shed and two vehicles, and after the blaze was put out, authorities found the body of Eddie Lyons, 78.

Charenton is about 115 miles west of New Orleans.

Americans are a violent breed; they have little respect for human life, let alone human rights.

When not killing people around the world in the name of "Anti-Terrorism", they are kill each other in record numbers.

Just for one day, the combined number of murder and rape in five major American cities, Detroit, Chicago, Phili, Los Angeles, and NYC exceeds the combined annual number of the same crimes in five nations, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, HongKong, and Singapore.

"Spoons and chaise lounge chairs are also weapons....should be ban them?" continues the lobotomized "intellectual" of the Right.

This is a tough time. We can't have people shooting other people. But I don't want to give up my gun. Yes a liberal with a gun. See liberals and conservatives have something in common thats guns. People who do stupid $hit with guns are the ones causing all this grief. Another problem is the more we fight about this the longer it will take to fix the problem. Can't we come up with a better plan than what is out there. Please instead of arguing lets come up real answers to the problem. The first thing we should start to look at is mental health and how we can get the people who need it some help.

Nobody's asking you to give up your gun. The problem we have isn't complicated, there are simply too many handguns and high-capacity weapons out there. Why? The gun manufacturers are making a lot of money and have been smart enough to put a lot of it toward lobbying. A child can tell you that if a lot of people are getting killed by guns, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever to pump more guns into our society.

The arguments against ANY type of gun legislation are puny and less than childish. Cars kill people, why not ban them, etc. Something has to be done, just like something had to be done about the housing bubble, DDT, smog, and all the other things that got real, real bad because no one wanted to step up to the plate and do what was right.

I would like to challenge anyone out there to put up a rational reason for a private citizen to have a high-velocity weapon with a high-capacity magazine in it.

Every shooting now will make national news because the Liberal media is pushing Obama's agenda. They won't report how many people are killed by illegals or drunk drivrers, that isn't a popular subject with them.

Hey all..... you know we really need to get the finger off the hot button. Us anti-gun, anti-NRA, anti-insanity types can be reasonable occasionally. If a man named Wilbert Thibodeaux DIDN'T have a shotgun in the bayous outside of New Orleans there would be something seriously wrong with this story. Come on folks.... this is an American classic. I'm deeply sorry for the harm to these officers but this is an old old story and making political hay out of it by either side is ridiculous. That being said, every shooting SHOULD make the news. The NRA has swept gun violence under the rug far too long and it's time Americans were aware. Oops, there I go politicizing. Sorry.

I would like to challenge anyone out there to put up a rational reason for any citizen to own a high performance car such as a Mercedes or Porsche or BMW that has an odometer that exceeds 80mph when the speed limit on the highways here in the US are limited to that number.

Buying such a vehicle is a clear indication that you intend to break the law by speeding and manufacturers who import those vehicles to the US are nothing more than murderers because it has been proved that excessive speed causes the driver to loose control of the vehicle and become unable to stop when faced with a situation that demands immediate lessening of speed combined with control of the vehicle.

Americans are a violent breed; they have little respect for human life, let alone human rights

Point One... "Human Life": Still, we engaged in two world wars, and while there are those claim they were fought to increase the wealth of those making the instruments of war, the men who did the fighting and dieing did so because they were under the impression it was for life, liberty, and a better tomorrow.

And the United States of America is still the country all others look to for aid, and refugees and immigrants of all nations do their damnedest and give their lives, as well leaving their children behind, to reach our shores.

Point Two: America invented the term "Human Rights" in spite of the fact that there is no such thing. The only "right" any humans have are those granted to them by the government or dictator of the country they happen to live in or under.

I'll agree to a gun ban, but I'd also like a ban on alcohol and tobacco, all of which punishable by the same laws applied to firearms with equal penalties. I'd also like a ban on all vehicles that can travel faster than the speed limit, and I'd like the national speed limit to be set to 35 mph.

I mean, the goal is to save lives, right?

The Preamble of the Constitution, which states its general principles, contains the phrase " insure domestic tranquility". People shooting at each other does not bring about "domestic tranquility". Neither does having guns - these were police officers that were shot.

Perhaps you should make a list of those things before shoving your feet further down your throat past your kneecaps. Be sure to include on that list the oil refineries and all those goods from Mexico coming across the Southern border that you will be paying a double tariff on.

If anybody said anything pertinent, or enlightening. Just the same old slogans posted, again and again and again and...

For the record, none of the proposed gun laws would have prevented this shooting. The shooter used a shotgun, which is legal even in Great Britain. But it is also notable that being armed did not save life of the tribal officer, who was the first person shot and the only fatality.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced sweeping legislation to outlaw trailer parks. While in Maryland, Governor Martin O'Malley has proposed a law limiting trailerparks to 10 occupants.

                            satire...

Yeah, Cuomo bought out all the trailer parks in NY and relocate the people down South. As for Maryland, O'malley's idea was to make the trailer half size smaller so it can only fit 10 occupants.

Ban all guns just like England. If you want to go hunting you can rent one @ authorized location. USA is totally out of control with guns and those nuts you think the government is coming to get them should definitely not have guns and have mental exam as soon as possible.

Yep ban guns so criminals will still have them, or they will simply use knives and the people are defenseless. Oh that's right, you have to get a license for a steak knife now in England. Poor England, can't export it's beef and can't eat steaks either.

But wait, I thought more guns solved everything!! If only the poor, dead cops had guns to protect themselves then they would be alive today because everyone knows if you have guns nothing bad can ever happen when a bad guy attacks. If only those cops had guns to protect themselves......

Maybe the NRA can lobby for Rocket Launchers for everyone. Apparently guns aren't enough protection otherwise no cop would ever get shot. How can I feel safe in my home if I don't have a rocket launcher by my bed when a "bad" guy (re: black guy) shows up??!!! Perhaps we can all get nukes too!! My freedoms are what's infringed. I need the freedom to blow sh!t up.

I doubt you "thought" anything of the sort. But, you will find statistical data from the FBI/DOJ that strongly correlates an increase in guns and gunownership with reduced violent crime and murder.

But wait. What does "America's" mean? turns out they include North, Central and South America as one. so let us Break it down by regions.

                                    Region Rate Count

                                    North America 3.9, 13,558

I found it interesting that the Associated Press has broke a story today on does Gun Control work. Brazil was one of the three countries that were included, Brazil as they noted has a ban on all guns.

However they left out the 2012 recent report and showed instead the 2011.

The 2012 shows a 40% increase in the Homicide rate put out yesterday by the Latin America Current Events & News. using the G1 data.

"Murder Rate Rises 40% in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2012
On January 26, 2013, G1 reported that for the first time in twelve years, the homicide rate in São Paulo increased in 2012."

                                    Today's Associated Press Report:

                                    BRAZIL — BEYOND REPAIR?

"So how about a country that actually bans guns?

Since 2003, Brazil has come close to fitting that description. Only police, people in high-risk professions and those who can prove their lives are threatened are eligible to receive gun permits. Anyone caught carrying a weapon without a permit faces up to four years on prison.

Isn't it already illegal to shoot some one? This may also be a case of arson. Isn't arson illegal as well? In many rural areas it is not all that unusual to see some one walking down the road with a shot gun or rifle. In some states it is still deer hunting season. Also, in some parts of the country, there is a real danger of attack by feral dogs or wild pigs. A stick won't stop a pack of dogs or a 400lb pig. The shooter in this case used a shot gun, not one of those scary looking black rifles. Shouldn't we be more concerned with what is causing people to think killing another human is a good idea, rather than focusing on a particular type of fire arm?

Gun grabbers want us to believe that gangs will shrink and the number of thieves will decrease if guns are banned and that the government will protect us.

Reality tells us a different story.

@champagne: The reality is, if they were serious about shutting down gangs, they'd end the war on drugs. The vast majority of gangs and organized crime revolves around the income from the drug trade. If that were to disappear, they'd have to find something else to do.

The thing is, our government is more interested in writing laws that "protect us from ourselves" than they are in writing laws that protect us from other people. That's why it's illegal to have assisted suicide, but a person can sue you if they hurt themselves while robbing your house.

So, hoplophobes.... which way is it?

Hypocrisy is the only official policy for all government agencies. The only other policy, the unofficial one, is to steal as much money from the taxpayers as they possibly can, and if caught, retire with a fat pension. Nice.

Are YOU a trained DHS agent? Same gun skills, background and training?

Or are you just a clown that can't hit a target with 10 rounds?

                                        I know how I'd bet!

                                        Nope.

                                        Better.

Oh.. Ten rounds.... ten hits. All center mass critical.

Yes, I'm sure if they could fly, it would be right through the large ragged hole I leave in the center of the target.

What training (formal) do YOU have? I don't mean going to a shooting range with your metal manhood!

Oh, have you spoken with a mental health professional about your apparent predilection for using sexual references in attempts at supporting your misconceptions? I would certainly suggest it.

XDm: I don't know I'd be particularly good at shooting a "true" assault rifle, as I've got very little experience with automatic fire.

Now, with my "assault weapon" rifle, I can put 20 on target at 200 yards. My range has one of those 12" steel plates out there, and there's something very satisfying making it swing a little higher each hit by timing things.

Actually, you would likely have no problem with a true "assault" weapon. Most military, with the exception of the crew manned machine guns, use either semi-auto or three shot burst mode. Staying up and visible to opponents for longer than a 3 shot burst is painting a VERY big target on yourself. Warriors today seldom use the Nam era style of holding the weapon over a protective barrior and pulling the trigger HOPING they hit something. The leadership KNOWS that's notning but a waste of a very valuable resource in a firefight...... ammo, and they have been successful in making sure the professionals in todays military understand that.

Oh.. properly set up, a nice bolt action can "reach out and touch someone" at over 1200 yards. Of course snipers can do appreciably better.... most are on target at over a mile today. Now those guys can shoot.......

I used to use a bolt rifle in the army. Got to where I could keep a 2 inch group at 2000 meters. With my AR-15 I can still keep a 2 inch group at 500 meters. Of course I have to use a scope with my old myopic eyes. Funny , When I was young, I preferred a bolt rifle or the M-14 because of the range and stopping power. Now I like the reduced recoil and easier handling of the AR. Plus the rifle, even in .308 is much lighter to carry. Do I need to have the 20 round factory magazines? No, but they make practice at the range a bit more fun. I can think more about placing my shot and less about how much ammo I have left, or if I have another magazine loaded or will I have to load up another mag before I can get back to what I am at the range to do. That being putting as small a group in the target at as long a range as I can. Just as an aside, I have an old Sharps in 50-120 that will put as many shots on the 1000 meter, 5 inch steel plate as any one wants to shoot. Not too bad for a rifle from 1870.

@old dog: I'm gonna have to call BS on your "2 inch group at 2000 meters." At 200 meters, maybe, but 2000 meters would put you in the list of the longest confirmed sniper shots on record. And last time I check, I don't think they made a gun that can shoot that kind of MOA. At that distance, putting just two shots on paper together is a lot more luck than anything else.

5 inch group with a Sharps? You're making things up, buddy. I think maybe you're adding one too many zeroes.
