Subscribe to RSSAt least five people were gunned down Saturday in Chicago, including a 34-year-old man whose mother had already lost her three other children to shootings.
Ronnie Chambers, who was his mother Shirley's youngest child, was shot in the head while sitting in a parked car on the city's West Side. A 21-year-old man who was also in the car was wounded, police said.
Shirley Chambers, whose two other sons and daughter were shot in separate attacks more than a decade ago, was left grieving again on Saturday, WLS-TV reported.
"Right now, I'm totally lost because Ronnie was my only surviving son," Chambers said.
Shirley Chambers' first child, Carlos, was shot and killed by a high school classmate in 1995 after an argument. He was 18. Her daughter Latoya, then 15, and her other son Jerome were shot and killed within months of one another in 2000.
"What did I do wrong? I was there for them. We didn't have everything we wanted but we had what we needed," she asked Saturday.
Chambers said despite this latest tragic chapter in her life, she's not bitter or angry.
"They took my only child. I have nobody right now. That's my only baby," she said.
A few hours after Ronnie Chambers was killed, a gunman opened fire on three men near a South Side eatery, killing two of them and wounding the third, police said.
On Saturday afternoon, detectives were called to the scene of another shooting in which a man in his 30s and a teenager were shot to death. There had been no arrests.
Chicago's homicide count eclipsed 500 last year for the first time since 2008. Although grim, Chicago's homicide rate was nearly double that in the early 1990s — averaging around 900 — before violent crime began dropping in cities across America.
Last year's increase, though, stood in sharp contrast to New York City, where homicides fell 21 percent from 2011.

OK, so in Connecticut, 19 white children and one black were killed by a gunman, and Obama and Feinsein want to outlaw the second amendment. But 500 mostly black children are killed in Chicago, and nothing is said - just maybe because Rahmbo and O'bammy have already outlawed them there? Racism, maybe? Or just that since the mayor, congressmen and prez are all Democrat, there is nobody that they can blame? Surely with all the benefits and entitlements they have handed out, everybody in Chicago should be happy, carefree citizens? Or could it be, just maybe, that all this smoke and mirrors doesn't work, and that people working and carrying guns actually have less crime?

If semiautomatic rifles with 30 round magazines are not need for personal protection, why is the DHS buying 7000 Assault Rifles (Fully Automatic) with at least 30 round magazines and classifying them as Personal Defense Weapons?
The fact is we'll never know if sweeping gun legislation will help or not (even though it's done a great job of cutting down gun violence in Austrailia) because it won't happen in a country that loves its guns and lovs its violence.
Chicago aside, just about every, if not every, mass shooting that we've seen (Columbine, Aurora, and the most recent one in CT have been committed by angry, white young men who have access to family guns. So here's a thought, let's hold the parents/guardians responsible for what these lovely youngsters are doing. Maybe then responsible gun owners would actually act responsibly.

I feel for the mother. Has to be horrible to go through what she has had to. But I now understand why the "Guns nuts" are so upset about the new bill. If they have to go through a mental evaluation, they might fail and lose their weapons. Well, if your mentally sick, you don't NEED a gun! I'm all for the 2nd amendment, but this is the 21st century. NOT the 1800's. We no longer use muskets. So to me, the ownership of hunting equipment would be ok. Hunting rifles, hand guns, and shot guns should be allowed. But, there's no need for assault rifles or large magazines. Unless your paranoid and constantly think we will be invaded. Other than military or law enforcement use, civilians do not NEED them. Notice I said "NEED", air and food we need. I would like to have an M4A1. But all I could do with it is target practice. Would be a waste of money. I don't know where you got your information on the ballistics of the M-16 . Or more precisely, the 5.56mm ball ammunition, but the bullet does not tumble through the air. If it did, a shooter wouldn't be able to hit the side of a barn from inside. I think where you got confused is since the 5.56 fires such a light bullet, it has a tendency to yaw on impact. The front slows down and the back is still going fast which causes the bullet to tumble or swap ends and break up. The design was used to help prevent over penetration and cause a large enough wound to stop an enemy solder from continuing the fight. A wounded man takes a couple of his buddies out of the fight as well. A dead soldier can wait until the fight is over. Why do you think it takes multiple rounds to kill? When you talk about how the AR or AK rifles are " high powered " weapons, perhaps you should look up the ballistic of the rounds used. Most common hunting rifles will pack a bigger punch. This is why the 5.56/.223 round is at the bottom of the list for deer or other bigger game animals. The .223/ 5.56 is a great round for smaller animals like coyotes or wood chuck. Accurate out to 500 yards, light to carry in bulk, light recoil, easily to control the rifles that use it. Not recommended on game animals over 75 pounds.
I got my M-16 stats from a friend (war vet) that has used one and he told me his did tumble end over end. It could be that he was mistaken about it tumbling through the air. His C.O. told him they do that so when it hits a person, the bullet will bounce around inside them and tear as much apart as possible. And 5.56 ball ammo? It's not a ball by any means. That would be a musket, with a different sized ball. And no, the Second Amendment does not say "Need". Says we have the right to bear arms. Is a pistol, shotgun, or hunting rifle not an arm? And most of what old dog in al. told you about civilian .223 Remington and military 5.56x45 NATO is pretty much correct...although they can be accurate WAY beyond 500 yards, and appropriate loads are suitable for large game- Winchester recommends their 64 grain Power Point .223 load for bear, and I personally have used the 64 grain Power Point to instantly turn off mulie bucks up to about 175 pounds or so.

I get you...but regular citizens also have no reason to have assault weapons. Have your rifle, shotgun handgun.LEGALLY. Hell I do, but I am not crying or worried about having a background check or being told I have no reason to have an assault gun either. Assault guns are just that, there should be a strict ban on assault weapons and they should be restricted to homeland security. I grew up in a home with guns, I hunted long side my dad and 3 brothers and host of uncles and aunts, I'm an excellent shot. But hunting guns were for hunting deer, etc in season, not human beings.
To others, drug and gun crimes are not just in poor impoverished areas, really how do you think drugs get to this country, because the last time I checked not one person in the ghetto had a plane or yacht to bring them in on. I've in a rich area, million dollar homes, etc. and there were more drugs floating through my neighborhood than Compton. Reality Check. The ghetto is second home to drugs and dealers, the rich take ownership in the first home. You could coat the walls with cocaine in the rich high school my kids went to.

If the ban were to only removes a dozen "assault rifles" from getting on the streets. How many lives can that save? Is it not worth it to you? I personally DO NOT want to see my son (or ANYONE for that matter) get killed because we didn't act on banning "assault weapons". Law enforcement and military need them. Not civilians.
It wouldn't save any lives. I've never seen an "assault rifle" getting "on the streets", and I'm not aware of a single crime committed in the history of our nation, with ANY legally owned select-fire weapon. Select-fire weapons have been HEAVILY regulates since 1934, and there are NONE that have been produced since 1986 that ANY civilian can legally own. Not one.
The truth of the matter is, you don't even know what you're trying to ban- you're getting your panties in a twist about civilian sporting rifles that LOOK similar to military assault rifles.
A better way to reduce gun deaths in the U.S., would be for Barack Hussein to quit arming Mexican drug cartels with machineguns to murder American police officers with.

I am what most of you say with such disdain, a "liberal". However I personally feel as if the time for serious gun control in my country is not at hand , yet .
If this country continues to have such a large percentage of it's citizenry align itself ( against their own best interests ) with the Republican Party, then we are headed towards a second civil war. And I can see no better way for U.S. liberals to eliminate the Treasonous, Murderous, Greedy, Self Serving Cowards who make up the leadership of the Republican Party, as well as the millions of "ditto headed" morons who provide the few at the top with the votes necessary for them to rape our countries coffers, and destroy our countries future, then firearms.
