Police on Sunday were questioning the former owner of a home in Santa Ana where human remains were found in a backyard, authorities said.
The man was being questioned by Santa Ana police in connection with the discovery at a home in North Hesperian Street, police said.
A human skull and bones were found Sunday afternoon by residents who bought the home less than a year ago and who were doing landscaping work in the backyard, police said.
The Orange County Coroner's Office confirmed the remains were human and an anthropologist was being called in to further examine them, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, a spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department.
The home was burned in 2006, Bertagna said, and the former owner had lived at the location for more than 20 years.

Longtime neighbor Evy Disner said the home where the remains were found belonged to Larry T. Dominguez. She said the home was burned in an electrical fire in 2006.
Dinser's husband, Renan, rescued Dominguez from the flames in what she described as "pack rat" conditions.
Disner said Dominguez kept to himself but she heard no complaints from neighbors in the tight-knit community.
"He was an extremely nice person, always friendly," Disner said.
She said that Dominguez inherited the home from his father, who she said lived there for a time.
"We don't know if or when his father passed away," Disner said.
Disner said that after the fire Dominguez lost the house due to a lapse in insurance payments. He sold the house to his next-door neighbors, who were the ones doing work on the house on Sunday when they discovered a skeleton, Disner said.

Somebody's got some splainin to do.
No, but if you ask me, he just may have been found....
THE END
Should have buried daddy a lot deeper, time to meet your celly Bubba.
@Creek Dog - Probably right. The father died and the son probably could not afford a funeral so he just buried him in the back yard. Also, since it sounds like the son may be a hoarder, this kept the dad close. I little odd, but would make sense. Too bad the son did not know about the six foot rule.
Lost the house because he didn't pay his insurance. Do you think the illegals are going to buy insurance for their cars after they get their drivers license
What the f*ck does immigration status have to do with this article? Or you just a little racist that saw the Hispanic last name and decided to flap your lips?
Do us a favor. Don't speak again.
*fasttime*
You're an idiot! Who said he was illegal?? Most of the Hispanics living in these areas had been here from generations ago, and are here legally. It's like me calling you white trash or redneck if you live in the South or the 'bible belt' before even knowing who you are. I do know now you are for sure a bigoted racist, too bad for you since the Hispanic race will be a majority in the enxt 40 years or less. Live with it, you might need to learn Spanish in the near future.
Ewww Chrissy...You sure told him, His response is as relevant as yours.
Chris Does this bother you? Take that little pill and everything will be better. Now is it that many of your friends or your self is Illegal with that said there many jobs available in Mexico at this time
fastime: Do we think idiots will try to make ANY topic political? Yep, you just proved it.
Aside from the obvious off topic, you are basing the reason for him moving on hear say. A news monger in LA talked to neighbor that gives only info that makes her hubby some sort of a wanna be hero; MSNBC picks up that thread and you take it to mean a Mexican may not buy auto insurance. Wow! you sound sooooo intelligent...
A.Barcelo Just stating a fact I saw on a news program this morning. Your the one that jumped on it and made them illegals as far as Chris every post that someone puts on cracking down on illegals he jumps on it as if it is personal
Chris, please do me a favor and save a couple for me! Thanks man! I owe ya!
fastime,
You "did" start it. You also did not mention about a fact that you seen on the news this morning or we would be here right now throwing punches. We're here to post our thoughts so try not to take anything too seriously. You know, in one eye & out the other OK?!
Chris defends when someone brings race into something that has nothing to do with it. I also do considering we're not racists...
Later....
Hmmm...when did being an illegal immigrant equate to being a member of a specific race, Hispanic or latino is not a race. There are white hispanic/latinos and there are black hispanis/latinos. While it may be a form of bigotry technically it is not racism. Not to mention that not all illegal immigrants are hispanic.
Good thing the family found the remains before one of them got sucked into their TV set and would have to get a psychic midget lady to get them out.
As the leader of the State Department says about people dying, "What difference, at this point, does it make?"
We might have finally found Jimmy Hoffa
I lol'd.
TiredofLosers--right on. Only use all CAPS next time. Apparently, shouting makes it right.
He couldn't have "lost" the house and then "sold" the house.
Come on writers, you can do better than that.
How does a lapse in insurance payments cause one to lose a house? That makes no sense to me.
Forget it fasttime. They follow the Judas goat and will never get it until it's to late which it almost already is. And you laughed out loud there Chris yucaipa about a scene from a movie that depicted a home site on a Indian burial ground. Isn' that a little ironic for your little politically correct self? Like most just when it suits you there buddy.
Oh, just get ready everyone. Little Chrissy is the "New Troll" in town, hey that was an Eagles song I think??.......worthless POS, did not take you long to reload garbage. LOL.
Reminds me of a story of two old Wisconsin Farmers who owned property and ramshackle houses next to each other. One died and the other took care of the problem by knocking down the house with the body inside. He may have said a prayer or two and put up a cross but otherwise the service was pretty informal.
fasttime banned, rereg of deathwisher CHARGER12.
Folks who flamed him, remember this bit of the Code of Honor:
Lost,
So.......what's your point?!
And you reply;
LostInThePineBarrens
OK, whatever dude. Racism is a big word derived from multiple angles of the English language including, but not limited to, slang.
If you're backing him up, then it's all good. I just thought different of you
Not everyone keeps their skeletons hidden in the closet.
My guess, his father, who might of passed away naturally. He sounds as though he might have some issues, reading about his pack rat tendencies. All we can do is speculate until more facts emerge!
SOP for NewsVine. Get the story out there before anyone even knows what the story actually is.
Exactly... like, "Yes, I buried Daddy out back. He wouldn't fit in the closet, and the basement was full."
This is California where backyard burials are common. They can raise the tax on them and solve the states monry problem
This is California where backyard burials are common
...for dogs and cats, maybe, but not humans.... you must be from one of the "other" 49.....
Two skulls popped up in my Mothers backyard when the final grading was being done in1967. My Grandfathers friend was doing the grading hopped off the dozer said the were indian skulls and put them in his trunk. He seemed pretty pleased with himself. And that was the end of it. Things weren't so complicated when I was a kid.
And it's possible that some family who was suffering the anguish of missing family members never got closure, and their murderer never got justice because grandpa's friend decided the skulls were cool souvenirs.
How do you know they were Indian? You and him could probably still be arrested
If they were indeed Indian remains, the person who took them could get into a lot of trouble even after all this time for not reporting it.
Wild Bill;
So maybe we should go around digging up your grandma and sell her as a trinket. Oh wait, you call it grave robbing when it's your ancestors, but archeology when it's ours, right? News flash, this was illegal in 1967, so if the were "Indian" skulls, Your grand dads friend was an insensitive, grave robber even back in this "less complicated time".
Nicodemus, If I find a body while doing landscaping on my property meaning that is property that I have purchased and am paying property taxes and insurance on then it is not grave robbing, While I agree that Grandpa should have contacted the authorities it is irrelevant now as if he was a grandpa in 1967 he is more than likely deceased now...wanna go dig up his grave!
hopefully you didn't get skullphucked by them skulls
Lostinthepinebarrens: Considering that forensics allow the reconstruction and dating of human remains and that, unless you are indeed an expert and can with a certainty confirm that said remains do not belong to any known missing persons and that there was no foul play involved, you have a moral obligation to report the finding of any human remains to the authorities regardless of whether you own the property and pay taxes. Paying taxes actually obligates you to the government because if you fail to pay taxes, your property can be seized and sold-therefore who really owns your property? Just a thought.
showmespfld, Did you happen to read my whole comment or just look at the first sentence because if you read the whole comment I indicated that he should have reported it to the authorities, I however disagreed with the comment about finding bones on your property being the same as grave robbing. And until I stop paying my taxes the property belongs to me.
...who's to say he didn't put them there himself....you KNOW how things got swept under the rug then....
I new Jimmy Hoffa would pop up sooner or later.
Finally they found him!
I go along with you on that one Ray-2194047. I just checked the distance from where the deceased Mr Hoffa stopped breathing.
I did the calcs with Google Earth. The maths came in spot on. It said "NOT SO FAR"
Will we get a finders fee ??
What self respecting landscaper has not dreamed of getting head while sweating in the mid-day sun?
Disgusting and stupid comment. I hope you get bounced for a few days
landscaper? he ain't alone.
Pat ...lighten up.
@stonepipe2, that's nasty!
but funny
lets hope there old and not the father...
Amityville Horror all over again, contractor building on an old Grave yard
I though that was poltergeist
It was Poltergeist, Run, Run, Run to the light Mary Anne, wahhhhh.......
It was Family Guy as well, Peter should have never opted to put in a pool.
You only moved the headstones didn't ya!!! Why !!!!
Previous occupant was trying to stay "ahead" of the neighbors.
Amityville Horror supposedly was built on an old Indian burial grounds.(I actually read the book before the movie)
It's too bad the Amityville "horror" turned out to be a hoax. It made for a good, creepy story.
Amityville had a son, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr who shot his parents and four siblings. An actual case. There was no indian burial grounds the author(s) of the book finally admitted they'd lied.
I would rather them dig up my yard and find gold. Lots of it.
Pretty sure you wouldnt get to keep the gold even if they did. Most owners dont actually own the "mineral rights" to their land. They would have to pay you for you to allow them to come and mine and such, but the actual minerals in the ground wouldnt be yours. At least thats how it works in my state.
Stay The Course,
In CA most property owners own mineral rights, only a few of those housing projects where you lease the ground and condo/townhouse owners don't. Surface rights don't give you mineral rights.
Why does it always happen in a "tight-knit community"??
Today that just means they have Neighborhood Watch due to gang activity.
Few neighborhoods in CA fall under my definition of "tight knit". It's not uncommon to not know the name of everyone who lives on your street there. I guess Seven's right. It just means they don't actively try to kill each other.
H E L L, a lot of the Neighborhoods in S.Ca. People don't even know who, or how many live right next door, let alone their names, or anyone else on the Street for that matter. THEY all be stuck up snobs, which is OK. wouldn't, or even care to know any of them. (that's sad ain't it? Almost as BAD as the other side of the Country, I think they call it yonkers or something like that.)
Skeleton in the yard? Since when did they stop using closets?
Closets are too full because of all the Hoarders.
Captain was his name Red?
wonder if he skullphucked with the skull
Another Obama voter uncovered
Another voter the GOP suppressed
Fasttime...Are you saying dead people should be allowed to vote?
I'm saying he was probably put there by the GOP so he could't vote
I am hearing the music from twilight zone
The son was just trying to get a head in this world.
To bad the dad lost his.
The father was probably dead for several years, but the social security checks were still being sent.
That is exactly what I was thinking.
My first thoughts also, Not thinking that the son killed his father just that he did not report it when the father died.
Man ...people are so competitive when it comes to their yards and landscaping....They'll do anything to get a head .....
If they want to know who this is no need for anthropologist, just check last Novembers voter rolls.
I agree with Ray & the other 2 guys = Jimmy Hoffa !
Sounds like something straight out of Desperate Housewives... lol seriously.
Spooky! Not what I would like to find in my backyard!
Kid probably has some issues and no friends or other close family. Father passed away and the kid buried him in the back yard. Saved himself 10 grand in funeral expenses and a whole lot of social interaction he would rather not deal with. More common than you might think.
I'm sure they will find that the father just went hiking in the backyard and a wild animal got him...
I just love reading comments from the arm chair dectives on MSN. It is good to laugh in the morning...
He never wanted to get rid of anything. Even his dad's body.
