California family missing after trip to Mexico

Three members of a Southern California family have been missing for nearly a month after taking a trip to Mexico, loved ones say.

Roberto Muñoz, his wife Cecilia, and their grandson Armando Salinas, had gone to Mexico to visit relatives over the holidays. But just as the three were beginning their trip home, family members lost contact with them.

Relative Delphina Layton said the family had reached out to the U.S. Embassy and the FBI, to no avail.

More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

Cellphones belonging to the missing group appear to have been turned off, and border records show that they never crossed back into the United States, she said.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Layton expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation.

“I need returned calls,” she said. “Somebody get back to me and tell me that you’re doing something.”

A Palm Springs, Calif., television station reported that the family had been traveling through Chihuahua, Mexico, and passing through the rough border town of Ciudad Juarez. U.S. relatives were reported to be living in the Coachella Valley, northeast of San Diego.

Mexico really is as dangerous as Afghanistan or Pakistan, regardless of what vacationers who have yet to be killed will tell you. Drug cartels don't care where you're from.

Even a family who is familiar with Mexico isnt safe, but lets be honest it also happens here. Its just in Mexico with their police we may never know what happened. At least in the US law enforcement would probably find out what happened.

Has anyone checked the jails or INS? Was their paper work/pass port in order? Why with this family did they go to Mexico instead of having their family come to America? Is this what Romney calls self deportation? It's not really working is it?

What, you put that little comment in there to be PC?

Yes, it might happen here, but it is not an every day occurrence as it is in Mexico, particularly in the area this family was travelling.

I'm very sorry for the pain of the family left behind, but just what she expects American authorities, or the Mexican authorities for that matter, to do is a huge question mark. Anyone going into Mexico is taking a risk when there are reports of killers walking up to vehicles waiting in line to cross the border check points and firing point blank into them without consequence from authorities.

And as far as I know, the extreme travel advisory issued by our government against Mexico has not been rescinded. Help from the Mexican authorities? What a joke. Their own "authorities" are either being murdered or running like rabbits for our border. The ones left behind are in the pockets of the killers.

Confussed. What does Romney have to do with any of this? Last time I checked he wasn't president, so his views really shouldn't matter one bit.

Personally, I feel the same about the people who travel to Mexico as I do the ones who go backpacking in Iran or North Korea.

Once you cross the border into their country, you're on your own.

Yes--- But it also depends on where in Mexico you go, for example, I wouldn't go where they went. But, thats probably hard for them since they have family.

However--- I have a freaking blast in Cancun and never once felt threatened or scared. NOT ONCE!

I can't begin to imagine the horror of being assaulted, kidnapped, or worse. Certain members of our species need to be put on an island and left there. Would be great if people could leave one another alone.

As Janine said above, once you cross the border it's another place altogether.

People just don't get it- Mexico is dangerous! Stay away from there. There's a reason people are trying to leave there and come here.

And with the sentiment regarding current immigration policies the 11 million+ illegals will probably have their dreams come true soon. As well as their families and extended familes. Heck, just stay here- we're becoming assimilated by Mexico as it is!

after visiting relatives in Chihuahua...it seems awfully strange to take the long way home.

my gut says they were drug runners...and as such, they likely met a fate they were bound to meet at sometime.

I crossed the bridge by foot into Nuevo Progreso this past Christmas to buy some boots. I only went in about 5 blocks during the morning hours and found it to be quite nerve wracking. If a little border town that is mostly for tourists is that bad, I can't imagine the bigger cities.

With Mexico's history, I would say that it would be prudent, at this point, to have relatives who reside in Mexico to travel north to see me. It appears to me, that Mexi-hole has taken three more lives, more than likely. And for the person or persons who say that Mexico is safe or what happened to those family members could happen here, just who are you trying to convince? Yourself?

Funny how when a US citizen(s) gets treated badly while in Mexico both administrations are silent.

Sad that the US Embassy has not returned their calls.

I've vacationed in Mexico EVERY YEAR for the past 7yrs. I roam the towns and feel 100% safe. The people in Mazatlan are the nicest people you will ever meet. I'm appalled at some comments here. People forget that in the US, we have gang bangers & drug dealers here just as they do everywhere else in the world. Grow up people. A little off topic, but I had to comment on the "eyes roll" comment by Lucieinthesky. It's a shame the media emphasizes right wing "Christians" who make mistakes or don't follow Jesus much at all. As with many things, the media doesn't often tell us about the Christians who do give their lives for others and follow God's word to love one another as ourselves. To bring it back to topic, i have had similar experieinces to lucie. I've been to Mexico many times myself and never felt threatened.

It's sad to say but these people are likely dead and buried somewhere out in the desert down there.. Their car and belongings now the property of some murdering drug cartel members or the gangs of bandits that just look for people to rob and murder.. It doesn't matter to them if they are Mexican, American, white or black.. They will murder for the last dime in a person's pocket!

I have some very good friends that live in Mexico City and I worry about them a lot.. They told me just recently that their neighborhood, which was fairly free from crime, has recently had some incursions by drug gangs.. All I can do is pray they stay safe but their safety is now questionable, especially since law enforcement if virtually useless down there.. The whole aim of these gangs is to get a solid hold on the city.. They go from neighborhood to neighborhood recruiting people, especially young people, through fear and intimidation until each area is under their control.. Then they go on murdering rampages with drive by shootings, etc.. A lot of innocent people are dying because the cops look the other way.. They have NO power and are completely intimidated by the cartels.. Really sad..

What a bunch of stupid comments, it's not that Mexico is not safe, is that people who search for trouble find it. But I guess is easier to condemn others without noticing that in the US besides drug dealers, and gangs you let crazy people shoot dozens of kids on their schools and students in their university...yeah, because that makes totally sense.

Our entire family took two trips to Juarez every year. Loved the culture, food and friendly vibrant family atmosphere. Left the cars with young men to wash and wax. They took extremely good care of the cars, guarding, watching to be sure no one touched them, best wax jobs Ever, for a reasonable price. Came back to ABQ New Mexico with our cars loaded with well made merchandise at reasonable prices. That was BEFORE LBJ's Congress of 'Redistribution'.

After 'THE GREAT SOCIETY' 'war on poverty' changed the USA into a Perpetually Dependency Addicted nation, Everything changed. With the US Government mandated 'war on Traditional Family', has come World Class USA Drug addiction, causing Mexico to suffer drastically in the, predictable as the supplier, 'Collateral damage'. What a lot of incredibly disrespectful and stupid replies from racists and ethnocentricists.

Mexico is not a "failed state", and it isn't even as dangerous as the USA where folks are apparently much more afraid than in Mexico since you can't even have an adult conversation about "regulating" firearms without gun-hugging nutcases putting the NRA before the USA.

Unlike the USA, our Congreso is actually working together to attend to Mexico's problems, and we expect our economy to grow more than the USA's this year.

The "narco violence" everyone likes to blame everything on is simply an extension of the US "war on drugs" fueled by US dollars from US consumers thanks to a stupid US prohibition of popular intoxicating substances that creates a multi-billion dollar a year black market defended with US-bought weapons. It involves narcos and police and the military, not civilian travellers or tourists.

As for all those "criminal illegals", I wish all those wonderful hard-working folks would all come back to Mexico so the racists would have to eat their words since they wouldn't be able to afford their food or the lifestyle to which they've become accustomed since it's those "criminal illegals" who make their lives affordable.

Really, most of you folks who responded with hatred and ignorance to this article bring SHAME to the USA. You don't deserve the good fortune of having been born anywhere in North America.

Hopefully these guys get found, but every day that passed reduces their chances exponentially.

I have Hispanic friends in El Paso that will not go back to Mexico to visit their families any longer because it is too dangerous for them. They tell me that as much as it isn't safe for Whites to cross the border, it really isn't safe for them. Supposedly they are looked at as traitors by some of the more dangerous ones down there. I know for a fact that one of the engineers down there showed me his pickup which was riddled with bullet holes. Claims he went across to watch the world cup with family and when he went to walk out to the truck, two people opened fire. Missed him and his brother, but managed to put about 20 rounds in his truck. Just one of many incidents I have been told about.

I love how nearly everyone on this board refers to that @$#@hole Mexico... like it's one freakin city. It's kinda like saying, you know what, the United States is a really dangerous Sh@#$hole, because you went to Compton or to Detroit. There are cities that are dangerous in Mexico - for example, the one that this family went to. The majority of the places in Mexico are safe. Your condemning every part of a country for the worst areas... I'm pretty sure you could do that with every country on the planet.

Oh, and for the amazingly ignorant who's posts are summarized as "OMG I went to the border town and it was sooooo bad, the rest of the country must be worse!"... the border towns are the ONLY really bad areas of Mexico. You should always avoid the border towns at all costs. Once you get about 100 miles south, it's pretty nice.

Residents of the United States have appropriated the term 'American', but they really have no exclusive right to it.

The United Nations does NOT consider Mexico part of North America. It is in Central America along with Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

The people of the world consider Americans from the United States to be the only "Americans". If I, a white 3rd generation American, go to Mexico, I am an "Americano". If a Mexican who is a US citizen goes to Mexico, he is called a "Mexicano".

See....the world calls us Americans because us Americans fought in all those wars. Where was Mexico?

By the way: Europe and Asia are one big LAND MASS but they are separated into 2 continents.

Why is that do you suppose?

          #1.59 - Tue Jan 29, 2013 6:47 AM EST

There is no "continent" of "Central America". That is a political designation (and who cares what the UN recognizes?). From Panama up, it's North America, from Panama south is South America. And regardless, they are ALL AMERICA and the people that live in any of the countries are ALL AMERICAN. Europe is a continent, like it or not. I don't make the rules.

Actually, the reason they call us Americans is because "United Statians" sounds incredibly stupid (the founding fathers really didn't think that whole thing through, at the time people still identified more with their home state) and eventually there needed to be a way to lump everyone into a common label. So we appropriated 'American', ignoring the fact that there are a lot of other countries that make up the American continent. Much like the people in India aren't all that happy that even though they are part of Asia, they are not considered 'Asian'. Russia too, for that matter. Would it be ok for the Somalians to say they are the only Africans?

Not sure why you think 'fighting in wars' has anything to do with anything.

In Mexico last year, 120 foreigners (Americans) were killed. While that's awful, according to the same crime ratio, you're twice as likely to be killed in Texas. Three times as likely to be killed in Houston. So would you visit Houston, or Mexico?

Most major US cities continue to have a much higher murder ratio for visitors than Mexico.

I still wouldn't go anywhere near the border, though.

Go to Cancun every year- have a blast. the locals are very nice and accomidating (tips) but I would stay within the resort strip of Cancun and when we go to night clubs or bars we travel with the Hotel group. Its a blast, I truly never once felt scared or threatened. One time in the airport I felt a little uncomfortable, there were 3 cops in the airport that were just STARING at me. I was nervous they were going to single me out for whatever reason--- but they never did anything-- but STARE.

Other than that . All my trips to cancun are awesome and I am going again this summer!

Oh and if you want illegal drug paraphernalia --- dont go anywhere sketchy or up to random people- just go up to teh doors of the bathroom at any club you are at lol.... i do not know this from experience but i have witnessed it everytime- everywhere we went. Its pretty out in the open- everyone knows who the two guysstanding by the restrooms are but they dont force it on you or nag you to buy it- they just wait for people to go up and signal them. Hm.Not my kind of thing --- but just a tip

Williamof Rites,I had a customer go to Puerta Vallarta for an eight day vacation with a tour group. They came back safe and sound and had a great time. They stayed at a resort and in the day time went with a group to local restaurants. It isn't even wise for tourists who come to the U.S. to go off the beaten path by themselves.I'd name a few places in California but don't like using a broad brush to paint an entire community of people.

I had always wanted to go to Mexico so I finally went in August 2011. Never EVER again. The water and scenery were beautiful but that about sums up the good part of my wasted money and vacation. Very disappointed and scary with soldiers at check points with assault weapons draped over their shoulders. That was my first experience/impression once we left the Cancun airport. I can now say "been there, done that."

mom2five - have your will in place. if you are not taking children have in place what will happen to them should you not return. (do not take any children by the way) do not wear any jewelry or any substance. cover up your blonde hair. you have to go through customes, the airport itself and the parking lot (all places of concer) before getting on the bus which will take you to your resort - along the way keep your fingers crossed nothing happens to your bus. i could go on and on - the place is a cess pool - lawlless and crime ridden. good luck .....

mom2five- Have fun in Cancun! Don't let these people who never leave their own homes convince you not to live your life. Bad things can and do happen everywhere. That's not reason to curl up in a ball and stop living (as these people have apparently done). Enjoy your vacation! I recently went to Cozumel, Mexico. Couldn't have had a better time and never felt the least bit uneasy.

By all means travel and enjoy your lives while being intelligent and cautious. HOWEVER, those of you who travel to Cozumel or Cancun and say that you "go" to Mexico. NO, that is like some European going to Disney World and then returning home saying that they saw the U.S.

DoWhatsRight - I will take precautions and I am traveling with a male; no children.

Allielcea - I have friends that travel to Cancun every year without issue. I know I will have fun.

Randog - I totally agree with you; traveling to Cancun is not the same as the towns I visited as a child with my grandparents. Even 25 - 30 years ago - My parents and grandparents surrounded me to stop random people from coming up and touching me. They were attracted to my blonde hair and pale skin.

If you are going to a tourist resort, they are usually fairly well protected. I vacationed at a beautiful place right on the beach; most of the people there were other tourists and I felt quite safe. However; I live about 45 minutes from the Mexican border in AZ, and I often would cross over into Nogales to bargain shop. It is very poor there and people do follow you; I haven't gone there in years. Naco is close by, and that too is very poor...People stare at you and give hostile looks; not very welcoming. I went to Juarez years ago, and even then I felt creepy. This is one place that is off limits unless you want to take a chance...Lots of cartel activity there. Also, Tijuana near CA border is not very secure. We do have a very large population of Mexican nationals that shop in our town from Mexico; I found them not to be especially pleasant towards Americans, and their children tend to be left in the toy aisles where they play with everything without supervision. However; I am sure that there are plenty of Americans who treat them with hostility, so it works both ways.

My dad is married to a woman who is from Mexico (Tampico - on the East coast about 6 hours South of the border). They used to drive down to go visit her family once or twice a year, but they haven't been down there in 4 or 5 years now because it is not worth the risk. Dad said he would fly his wife directly there to avoid the worst of the problems in the border towns, but even then he doesn't want their children going with her. They have been told that because my dad is white, their children would be targeted for kidnapping to collect ransom (because all white people/Americans are rich). Her parents still drive up once a year, but even they do so with the understanding that it may cost their lives. Sure there are nice places in Mexico still, but if these people were going to visit family in the cities that were reported, they did so at their own risk. They knew about the risks and chose to go anyway. I hope it was worth it to them.

I visit chicago every year, have never found it to be a scary place.

granted, I dont go hang out on the south side...

on the other hand, i've visited a few places in the south where I was terrified - in a "female going to get raped and killed" kind of way. i hope to jebus my car never breaks down in georgia again...and I never have to endure a few hours of bubba and his brother billy bob, in overalls and no shirts, chewing on straw...staring me down for endless hours while I wait for my car to get repaired. I am GRATEFUL there was a man with me when that car broke down, because im certain i'd have been raped the way they were staring at me and my friend.

anywho...given how many people go missing, are found murdered, or have been raped in America...

i'd say we better refrain from patting ourselves on the back for being a "safe" country.

we've got far too many homicides and dead children to EVER believe that to be inherently true.

@Jessica - you're an idiot. When was the last time we found a beheaded body in the US? It happens all the time in Mexico - usually a dozen at a time, an entire family often. When was the last time a journalist was found beheaded here after she wrote an unflattering article about druggers? Mexico is a mess and has always been a mess, even when the Spanish were in charge. It is well know for its lawlessness and for the past 3 centuries at least has been a haven for criminals and deposed politicians of all nationalities from around the world. Stalin had Trotsky assassinated there for a few pesos - and there are many stories like that. All you idiots who go to Mexican resorts and talk about how wonderful the locals are are morons - they kiss your butts to get your money, because they have no other way of earning a living. They talk about how fat, lazy, and ugly Americans are.

If you can afford it, splurging a little for a hotel with a concierge is worth it, especially in big cities when you're clueless about the area. This applies to Chicago, Mexico and anywhere else in the world.

Ya know, I'm willing to bet that Jessica is over 200 pounds, under 5'6", ugly as homemade sin, has chronic halitosis, and FANTASIZES about losing her virginity. One of those fantasies is being raped by Bubba and his brother Billy Bob who probably wouldn't TOUCH her nasty a$$ if she PAID them. It never ceases to amaze me that people ab-so-LUTELY love to bash the south (in any way possible, mind you). I'm from the midwest and I've been all thru the south in my years. Not once did I encounter the 'hillbilly' culture you people believe permeates the region. I suggest that those who have something against the south try living there for awhile or visiting. There is not much of a greater imbecile than one who gives opinions without a lick of sense to do so...

What is wrong with Chicago is that not enough of the people haven't got feed up with the killings yet. Just wait until those gang bangers start in on a white suburb. I know if it happened here, they gang bangers would be full of holes from all the neighbors opening up on them.

Gun laws be damned, when someone is shooting at you, or putting rounds into your house, fire back or else be a victim. Make the gang bangers pay the price for being stupid, they keep it in their hood, not in our areas where people act like people, not animals.

And if that insults someone, well, I'm sorry I think that way (not), but how else do you explain what those people are acting like?

Bigchapp the difference is they hear from their families who have come here, and are told how easy it is to collect welfare (Using their cousins sisters brothers uncles next door neighbors SS #) while working under the table at the same time. How great it is to get FREE health care and education for their multitude of kids.

I say give Chicago to China to pay our debt to them. That should help with the crime rate. They can have Obama, too.

I would not got to Mexico, even if a won an all expenses paid vacation to Mexico. The drug cartels run the place and there are far too many people with extremely evil, vile agendas. Traveling to certain parts of a huge portion of the world should come with a huge warning; “enter at your own risk, you are so not in America any more“. Too many people travel and act like they are still in America. Also, just maybe there is a missing, underlie piece of this story.

If you’re a blue eyed blond female even if not, you’d probably be working for the cartel within a week if you’re male! They’ll find the corps minis the head! Its a good thing that our government is going to give them driver license’s so they can move back and forth without any problems! Expect more kidnapping and disappearances

Im betting that even with a Hispanic last name these people are Conservative voting, WORKING, American citizens.

If they were illegals, living on welfare,, and liberal agenda supporters they would have millions of dollars of government pay being spent on finding them. After all three people would be six votes for the dems.

ayeinfidel- My family is from TX. We are almost all progressive, liberal Dems; a blend of Hispanic, Anglo and
Native American. There are many more good people in TX than regressive bigots, it's just that until recently it was kind of dangerous to advertise your leanings. We are no longer a silent minority. We are finding our voice and working to change TX for the better. It will take time. We are up for the fight, hoping for the day that people like Terry will be an embarassing memory.

For me, when it comes to choosing vacation sites I tend to look for places that do NOT advertise that they hate Americans.

Yeah, maybe it's my lack of a sense of adventure, but maybe I will live longer this way.

They just never tell you about them. Now obama and the senate want to just open the door to illegal immigration, watch it really go to hell.

Bill K-1567373....You really are naive! This is simple supply and demand economics! As long as idiots in the US use drugs, the Mexican drug lords are happy to supply it...period! This has nothing to do with immigration reform! There were more than 11 million mexicans here illegally before Obama took office because all those who preceded him chose to look the other way! Now, as for the a-holes that continue to use drugs in this country, you are pathetic and weak and you will continue to fuel the cartels (Mexico and US) actions. There is not one person in this country that didn't know that drugs are a problem and addicting, yet they choose to try it anyway and the rest of us are now expected to pay for your bad decisions by way of rising healthcare costs and rise in violent crime....way to go!

@Just a cleaning lady - if you choose to travel to mexico, you deserve what you get. That includes all the people who go the resorts - you should be spending your money here in the US. There are beautiful places here that need vacationers. People like you make me sick - there are differences among cultures and Mexico has ALWAYS been a cesspool and it is not going to change. We are nothing like them. I don't see any Americans paying to be smuggled across the Mexican border. You're a birdbrain and you don't deserve to live here.

I wouldn't say that anyone deserves to be murdered or robbed or arrested just because of where they decide to vacation, but you are certainly taking your life into your hands when you make decisions like that.

I suggest we give them the southern half of California, especially LA and San Francisco, then put up the iron curtain - nothing else comes across. Either that or we forget about calling the United States a country, just let if fade into history. A country without laws is - Afghanistan or the mid-East! Coming soon to a state near YOU!

justacleaninglady-Sargent's comment was not racist, its true. Sad but true. A fact. And sadly white privilege is acceptable to the majority of Americans or it wouldn't be true.

No it is not safe, what part of daily killings do numnuts like you not understand? I live in Mission, Tx that's about 10 minutes away from the border, I used to cross over when it used to be safe. I am Hispanic and I used to have family across the border, but just because I know the streets and the way things run over there across or just because I am hispanic that does not make it safe for even myself to go over now. It has been around 6 years since the last time that I crossed over and it will probably be another 6 or more years before I do it again. A stray bullet is not prejudice. You morons need to listen to people such as myself (Hispanic with knowledge of the way things are currently working in Mexico) and do not go! It does not matter where you go, NO WHERE in Mexico is it safe. If you don't get shot, even if it's accidental then you will get kidnapped. If you do decide to go then good riddance that will be one less moron in the GREAT old US of A.

The U.S. has time and again advised people not to travel to Mexico unless it is to a tourist destination with a tour group.I am hoping that this family is found safe and sound. If it were my family, the not knowing would kill me.

Dude, LMAO, you need to go back to school and get some added education. Either that or have your mommy fill out the blank little square for you with words. Please.

Cellphones turned off equals probably dead. Maybe the local criminals wanted their car. As bad as this is, there is plenty of bad stuff happening every day in these United States. Where is the outrage?

You obviously do not know Mexico these days, but if you really want to know, look it up, watch the video's if your stomach can handle it. People are decapitated by knife alive ect... you have no choice there anymore if you want to join a gang, your told you will, if you try to get off drugs, you will die. For all those that say Resorts are safe, think again, the crimes there have reached every resort city. The US has had advised not going anywhere in to Mexico for quite some time now, LISTEN! Dont Travel to Mexico, if you do, remember, you are risking your life! I would rather travel to Chicago anyday!
