California family missing after trip to Mexico

Three members of a Southern California family have been missing for nearly a month after taking a trip to Mexico, loved ones say.

Roberto Muñoz, his wife Cecilia, and their grandson Armando Salinas, had gone to Mexico to visit relatives over the holidays. But just as the three were beginning their trip home, family members lost contact with them.

Relative Delphina Layton said the family had reached out to the U.S. Embassy and the FBI, to no avail.

Cellphones belonging to the missing group appear to have been turned off, and border records show that they never crossed back into the United States, she said.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Layton expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation.

“I need returned calls,” she said. “Somebody get back to me and tell me that you’re doing something.”

A Palm Springs, Calif., television station reported that the family had been traveling through Chihuahua, Mexico, and passing through the rough border town of Ciudad Juarez. U.S. relatives were reported to be living in the Coachella Valley, northeast of San Diego.

Give me a brake.... Why are we ONLY concentrating about this ONE "family" when in the past year alone there has been well over 75 family go missing down south of the border. Come on.........

Maybe they tried to immigrate, illegally. In Mexico that puts you in prison.

Are these Americans or just Mexicans living in southern California? Why is this news? People go missing in Mexico every minute. I don't see why the US Government needs to get involved here - travel at your own risk.

Hello! Did they just ignore the warnings to NOT GO TO MEXICO? There are many, many people killed there just for the heck of it. It is not a safe place to go. Even tour busses full of people get killed! That area where they were is one of the worst. I'm very sorry for the family but if they have not had a ransom call by now, their relitives have most likely been killed. Probably will eventually be found in a mass grave someplace.

Is clear that if the USA doesn't want this happening so close (or here) that they need to help out solving the problem hand in hand with Mexico before is too late, right?

Don't want to tell you "I told you so"!

Wow why should our government find out what happened to them. Call the Mexican government. The US can't even keep track of the illegals that come into our country let alone the illegals that leave. I say yeah 3 less mexicans in the USA

There are so many places in this world (and in our own country) that have people with less, trying to get more by any means necessary. Living in Southern California, I see mostly WHITE people standing on street corners with cardboard signs begging for money when the MEXICANS are the ones cooking, bussing tables, picking the fruit and vegtables you eat and doing your yard work. I have MUCH more respect for them than I do for the lazy, handout wanting, live off the government americans that want someone else to do the work while they abuse the system that is funded by my taxes and then bitch about the taxes going up. There are bad people in every society of the world, stop pointing your finger at the ones you dont like and look in the mirror. As for H. Wilsons comment, he's an idiot. For anyone to classify an entire country or culture by "any town" they visit is obviously someone who never leaves the couch and bases their opinion on what the gleen from the media. I am a born and bred WHITE American, have worked for the Federal Govt for 37 years and I OWN a house in Mexico. Have taken my family there for years and feel safe and comfortable when I go. I drive to and from, I speak the language, I understand the culture and I am glad to work within the system that that culture is based on. Are there people looking to do the weak, unaware and nieve harm... yes... in every country in the world. EVEN OUR's. When was the last time you heard of some deranged Mexican murdering a bunch of kids in an elementry school. And don't tell me it wouldnt make the news because of sensorship. The world media is too open. So the next time you eat a salad, or an apple, or reap the benifit of any other service someone from ANY other country provides (from the clothes you wear to the car you drive and the food you eat) have some respect, some understanding, and look on an ancestery web site and I think you'll find that , at some point YOUR family was an imigrant too just looking for a better life. You want the world to change, look in the mirror, open your mind, have some integrity, work on yourself and SHUT your mouth instead of expecting everyone else to fit in the "BOX" you feel they should be in.

Amen! After residing in Mexico for several years, it is clearly not the "dangerous place" Americans want to make it. I have found the city I live in (Guadalajara) to be safe and the people friendly. Although I am a white American, I am extremely embarrassed by the average Americans narrow minded ignorance.

I was at work when the Conn. shootings happened. The mothers at my school were throwing class Christmas Posadas. The asked...."Is it SAFE in the US anymore??" Ha!

I find it laughable that US immigration officials would be sourced as proof as to whether or not people from Mexico are in the US, and the answer is "no".

No wonder we have so many here. If they go back, they are killed. My advise, don't come to the US then you wouldn't be killed trying to come back Why would anyone go to Mexico on vaca anyway. It's a hell hole.

I would not travel through Juarez if my life depended on it. My family is native to Chihuahua and even they avoid it at all costs. The highways to and from Juarez are perilous. Cartels will set up their own road blocks, looking for oposing cartel members; those caught in between have a 50/50 chance. Plus there are old fashion car-jackings too. I would say that 25-50 km north of Chihuahua (city) is where you are no longer on the grid. You are 100% on your own, police will show up well after the crime has been committed. Juarez is a war zone. You are far better off flying into Chihuahua city, or if you have to drive, driving through another border town through Baja and then cutting across Sonora to Chihuahua. Not kidding.

Mexico has not been a place I ever want to visit. The drug stuff keeps the smart people away.

"Wheel Of Fortune" doesn't even give trips there anymore! That should be a clue.

I am not spending my tourist dollars in Mexico until they clean that mess up. Most of it is because of drug money (so much for the idea that using pot is a victimless crime). And everybody is on the take. Some guy on the street finds you a parking place and you tip them. I have gone to Cabo a couple of times. Yes, the people were very nice, and there was police presence everywhere. I felt reasonably safe. However, when using a credit card for the rent-a-car, someone stole the numbers and bought a couple of airline tickets. No. I really don't need the agitation.

The only person you're offending is yourself. You either have a very limited IQ, a complete lack of worldly experiences or a weak a$$ sense of humor (if you were trying to be funny). I tell you what, take a trip to the beautiful and majestic Rocky or Teton mountains in the incredibly diverse and beautiful United States of America and drink from a crystal clear mountain stream. You'll get the same gastro intestinal effect. Thats why any camping store from Wal-mart to REI sells water treatment products. Good GOD, do you actually think before you speak? Border town back ally venues will get you killed by the cartel and going to school or the movies gets it done here.

A Spanish last name means you could be from one of 20 countries. Did you ever notice how many Spanish place names there are in the US from Texas to California to Florida to Iowa ( Buena Vista county)?

the new Mexican administrations plan is to not "focus" on the cartels and that will stop the violence ,by letting the crimminal element "control" the streets. The lessons of history have been different. You can't make a deal with evil when evil is in the drivers seat.
