Denise please educate yourself. There are no "assault weapons" our military uses that can be purchased by civilians. There aren't - no modern automatic rifles and no modern rifles that fire bursts of 3 shots that can be purchased legally. So they are essentially already banned and have been since 1934 - happy now?

Secondly, how people use their legal weapons is up to them and here's a hint, the sole purpose is not strictly for hunting.

Denise, it's because of people like you that I've got to once again educate people about the difference between the so called "assult weapons" and other fire arms. Let's begin children, with what the military versions of the weapons can do. They have a switch on the weapon that allows the user shoot the weapon in full automatic mode (that is multiple bullets discharged with one pull of the trigger), or semi-automatic mode (one bullet is discharged with each pull of the trigger). The civilian version of the weapons are restricted to the semi-automatic mode. The only difference between the civilian versions of these weapons and other acceptable hunting guns is the body that they are built in. The body of the civilian weapon looks like the menasing military version. That's as close as the "assult weapons" get to the military versions. You say keep the hand guns and rifles. Well darling, that's all what you refer to as an "assult weapon" is. It's just a rifle that looks mean.

Denise, while you are at it, why don't you call for a ban on shovels. They have been known to kill multiple people. Ask O.J. Simpson about that. I guess he used an "assult shovel".

Harry, Jay, and Grandfather, as much as I would like to help you, let me tell you that Denise is not worth the effort. I've tried and tried to educate "Denises" everywhere, with the same statements you are making. All Denise wants to see is the 20 dead kids. She's not interested in facts, figures, education, learning, the Constitution, or anything else. She just wants the 20 dead kids, and she wants to blame a gun, the NRA, the Constitution, hunting, video games, you name it, for their deaths.

Forget that there was a evil nut wielding a weapon, and he would have killed as many as he could if it were any other weapon. Forget that nothing could have prevented him (or anyone else) from going out and committing mayhem of some sort, whether it be with firearm, fertilizer and diesel fuel, a hammer, sword, knife, poisonous gas, or any other item on the grocery list of murder. Violent people will do violent acts.

Not one thing, none, nada, zip, could have prevented what has already happened. If it hadn't been a gun, it would have been something else, perhaps an SUV to run over every little first grader out there on the playground. And I would imagine that a fast driver could get 20 pretty quickly. Once a violent person has made up his mind to do these horrors, NOTHING will stop him. (Pardon my use of male pronoun, but you know what I mean.) We can't see into the minds of others.

We are going down the wrong road, and we will waste too much time if all we do is say, "It's the gun's fault." Time is of the essence, and any fool should know that taking the long away around does nothing but eat that time. We want real solutions, and we want them now. However, we must use real critical thinking to figure out the real problems.

What we should be doing is educating, not just on the use of weapons, (or SUVs, or poisons, or knives) but on the importance of human life, and why it's important, why it's valuable, why it's something to be respected. We need to impress on everyone that you only get one. There's no automatic reset or instant resurrection. But let me tell you why it's a waste of our time to try, because all the little Denises out the world can't think beyond the end of their noses and see the big picture of what violent people are about. Violent, mean, cruel people who don't give a rat's behind if you're alive or dead will snuff out your life for nothing, no reason (that we can fathom) at all, because they WANT to. Killing does something for them. THEY DON'T CARE what we think or what we think is important.

This old man in Florida murdered his wife. This greedy, selfish, (possibly demented), old man used his act of violence to exercise authority over another just because he wanted to be fed. Even dogs don't bite that hand that feeds them, even if it's only occasionally. He didn't respect life, he didn't respect his wife, he didn't place any value on her, and he stabbed her death. That's the end result when evil, violent people decide they are the be all, do all, center of the universe.

Zapper, you might not believe you helped, but you did by putting another slant on topic. The Denise's of the world need to be hit with a barrage of message from all directions. Not just one common message, but a combination of all messages that reflect the truth.

It should be noted that Denise must not have much of an argument against our positions. She hasn't responded. On the other hand, maybe, just maybe (I doubt it though) we pulled one over to our side of the issue. We all have to stand together.

Of note, we do have guns (rifles and shotguns) in our home and have had firearms safety training.

I believe the point Denise was making is that the boy in Newtown shot his victims (26 of them) multiple times. Some of the little ones were shredded. That would be due to the fact that he had MANY magazines and they contained MANY bullets. He could not have done that much damage with a knife, or a shovel.

I believe we should be able to keep our rifles and shotguns (even though the Second Amendment starts out with the bit about a well-regulated militia), but we do not need 100-round drums. If you can't hit the target after the first 50 shots...........

As for your pile on in regard to Denise, maybe she spoke her piece and moved on. One thing I've noticed with people who are so in favor of these "assault-style" weapons the propensity to bury anyone that disagrees with them. So I'll stick with my Nylon 66 and Stevens pump action, but don't expect me to defend the AR-15. Or the people who think they look cool posing with fake military guns on Facebook and various websites. Good grief.

@blueunicorn - I couldn't agree more. I own guns myself, don't plan to give them up. If you know how to hunt, the most you need is 1 - 3 rounds. More than that and you don't know what you're doing. Again, if knives kill more people than guns, let's arm our soldiers with knives. That ought to end that lame argument.

So don't try to read something into what she said. For your information, I own several guns myself. It just so happens that I, like you, DO NOT own an "assult-style" gun. Never did, nor do I ever intend to own one. Why would I want to spend $1500 for a gun that does the same thing a $700 gun can do? I'm just sick and tired of people who haven't a clue as to what they are talking about bashing these types of weapons. I'm only trying to educate them so they will stop spreading falsehoods about the weapons and stop trying to infringe upon other people's rights who desire to own these weapons. If you choose to not own one of these weapons or defend other's rights to own them, that's your choice. Yes, I piled on to Denise, but I didn't do it in defense of guns; I did it in an attack on stupidity. Anyone who says that it's all the gun's fault is a fool. It doesn't matter what the tool is. If someone is going to kill, shred, stab, poison, strangle, whatever, that person is going to do it no matter what--maybe one at a time, maybe many at a time--the murderer will murder. No one could have stopped the carnage. It was thought out and planned. Like I said, if it wasn't by firearms, he could have just as easily waited for recess and run them down with a truck or car. Besides of the selector switch, there is also the issue of what ammo is available and used in military situations. A military grade ARM WITH CIVILIAN SPECK MUNITIONS WILL BE FORMIDABLE, YES, AND A CIVILIAN ARM WITH MILITARY SPECK AMMO IS ALSO A FORMIDABLE COMBINATION, BUT NOT A TRUE ASSAULT CONFIGURATION Pair the two mil speck arm and ammo together and you have an assault weapon for sure. (Armor piercing, tracer, incendiary, and above all, ALL ARE HOTTER than any civilian amo available on the legal market.) Yes one can buy mil grade Ball ammo, but that is the practice stuff, not the engagement grade.
