Police in New Mexico found an 8-year-old girl locked in a cage in a darkened mobile home, authorities said on Tuesday, adding that they charged the girl's adoptive mother, who had gone to the movies, with child abuse.
Cindy Patriarchias, 33, and her boyfriend, Edmond Gonzales, 37, were arrested after police found the caged girl on Friday evening, Las Cruces Police Department spokesman Dan Trujillo said.
He said police, acting on a tip from the woman's estranged husband, found the girl in the corner of a bedroom locked inside the cage, about 4 feet high, slightly more than 2 feet wide and about 5 feet long.
The homemade wooden structure had two latches and a baby crib mattress on the floor, Trujillio said.
He said Patriarchias had been charged with one count of negligent child abuse while Gonzales was charged with one count of negligently permitting child abuse. Patriarchias was released on bond on Tuesday but her boyfriend was still being held Wednesday, authorities said.

The girl was seen by medical personnel but showed no visible signs of physical abuse. She apparently suffers from microcephaly, a condition in which the head or cranial capacity is abnormally small, Trujillo said.
He said detectives did not know why the girl was left locked in the cage. She and three of Patriarchias' other children had been placed in state custody, he said.

Come on you who think potential parents need to undergo evaluation -- isn't going to happen! The conservatives would shout (and have) that it is discrimination and genocide against poor and minorities. The best we can do is keep abortion legal and obtainable and effective birth control a given and sterilization a really good option at a young age for a lot of people of any racial and social status - wouldn't these two have benefited from sterilization nine years ago? The problem is convincing them they really shouldn't reproduce.

Not in my mind there is no reason what so ever to put a child in a cage, so why even ask the question? We have people that are adopting children for extra income, foodstamps and what ever the goverment will give them , and also being foster parents for extra income. I think this is their way of making a living and the children are the ones that are paying with their life. The goverment needs to step in and change the process of how they check out people that take in these childen, now that is what I believe should happen. And when something like this happens they need to be charged to the fullest, and no good time taken off what they get. Strip them of anything and everything they have and never give them help with anything for the rest of their ungodly life. Let them fin for themselves when they get out of prison if they even go to prison.

Him who? The adoptive 'mother' did this to the child, the boyfriend simply let it happen. BTW, the WOMAN who did this is out on bond while the man who stood by and did nothing is still locked up. Sure there may be other reasons why, but she's the one who did this not him.
I read the article several times but do not see where the woman is in the process of adopting the child nor fostering the child. It says the child is her adoptive child. Disabled adopted is a money pot. The poor child suffers from microcephaly which used to be called, as in the movie Freaks, a pinhead. It is incurable. I doubt the woman did this adopting for any reason than money. Very sad. Brings into question the NM adoptive system and their requirements as well. Maybe just breathing adult?
I always hear about how hard and expensive it is to adopt a child. Which is it, easy or hard? I think whoever decided to let these people adopt are the ones who need to go to jail.

The state took the other three when they rescued this girl. The other children were either with her at the time or with someone else, I'm guessing. But they took all four at the same time.

Perhaps at the time the adoption began, she was married to the "person" who turned her in..... a seemingly good home to put someone in. In this case, NOT!! I agree with the other comments about forced sterilization.....but......some huge "ifs" in that. Who is going to decide who gets sterilized and who isn't? Our government? State governments? I hope the best for this sad child, and the other children. (One question: how did the ex know that this was happening? Was it happening when he was there, but he didn't say anything? The whole story makes a person sick, just thinking about it.)
She was put into a home with a "mother and father", the ideal perfect family you think was the scenario? At least it was'nt those "filthy immoral gays" eh?

What? From what I read the adopted mother had other children who appeared (from the story) to not be treated in the same fashion. This leads to the logic that she adopted this child under the basis for government money from adoption and because she felt that there was a good chance nobody would miss the child because of the physical deformities.
I don't understand why it's so easy for creeps like this to adopt for money. When my wife and I adopted from China, we had to go through two background checks (local PD and sheriff), had to be fingerprinted with the I.N.S., and had to give family and financial histories.
It highly depends on where you adopt. Social Services where I live is corrupted up to the management level and have allowed known families to adopt regardless of past family history. You adopted from China, because of this the child is considered foreign property and therefore goes through more regulations. Plus adoption from China is one of the most common forms of adoption and the process has become much more regulated and smoothed down.
Actually people adopt from foreign countries because all I ever hear is how hard it is to adopt children in the US and now THIS. As of for that comment that got so many raves for "having to getting a permit to own a gun but anyone can adopt a kid"is one big fat lie because that is one of the FIRST things in the legislation regarding guns that over 90% of Americans supporting fixing our broken background check system on guns want FIXED is the fact how many places guns can be purchased w/o ANY type of background checks, including getting this "straw purchases" fixed as well. As if we should even bring the gun debate as well as The President into this but of course the Obama haters bring im into EVERYTHING, including an article about the most popular dog breeds in the USA.
But of course us "lefties are accused of doing all the hating and being racist, divisional and so on...." Got to LOVE that ol' projection game......The crap just never ends.
Actually, we adopted from China because we didn't want to raise a child for however many years, only to have our hearts ripped out of our chests when the birth parent/s decided they wanted their child back.
It was well worth all the hoops we jumped through to have healthy well adjusted kids. I just think there should be a better system in place to check out the families these kids are going to.
These kids are human beings not pet goldfish that can be replaced whenever.
The punishment seems simple enough. Put the two of them in a cage just big enough to fit both of them. See how they like that for awhile.

How the hell do you know he came from Mexico? He could be third or fourth generation American born for all we know. Believe it or not, people don't change their last names to 'fit in' when they immigrate to America. That's why we have people who have never been out of the country with Russian, Irish, English, Spanish, Italian, French, etc... last names. To automatically assume that every person with a Spanish or Mexican last is here illegally is asinine.
