Freed from prison, former Illinois governor goes into, out of halfway house in a morning

George Ryan will sleep in his own bed tonight.

The Bureau of Prisons agreed to release Ryan from the Chicago halfway house he entered this morning and allow him to go home to his longtime residence in Kankakee, a source close to the former governor said.

Gov. Jim Thompson confirmed Ryan was released from the halfway house Wednesday morning and is back in Kankakee. Thompson said Ryan was released shortly after entering and as of 11:30 a.m. was in his living room, beaming and surrounded by grandchildren.

Such moves are not unprecedented, but the speed with which Ryan was transitioned home was not expected. Many observers believed that Ryan would be required to stay at the Chicago halfway House for three weeks to a month before transitioning home.

"Home confinement is a regular program with the Bureau of Prisons just like the halfway house," Thompson said, speaking in front of Ryan's house as family members gathered on the porch, "because they can't fit everyone in a halfway house."

In essence, the rules will be the same. Ryan will be subject to the same reporting requirements he would have had to obey in Chicago. He will be subject to periodic checks from his counselor to make certain he is at home at the appropriate times.

Spokespeople for the halfway house said Ryan will be "vigorously monitored."

If he is required to get a job, he will still be expected to report when he is leaving his home, when he arrives for work, and when he departs his workplace to return home.

Why do these elected crooks get sent to country club type prisions to serve their time? They screwed the taxpayers, just like someone who embezzled money from the bank.

And since when did bank executives go to prison? I live in Ill, and see the damage these people did to our economy - a slap on the wrist??? Hummm, if I am hungry and still a loaf of bread to feed my family I would get more time than these crocks who have hidden their wealth everywhere - It sickens me that white collar crime is whitewashed because they have money. Yeah, OUR money.

Him being placed in a mandatory halfway house is a ridiculous waste of public funds. They should either keep him in prison or let him out on parole. There is nothing to be gained by either Ryan or society by mandating his participation.

USUALLY the CONVICT is required to PAY for their own release treatment @ the half-Way house..

and I agree, like your comment, there is nothing to be gained by either !

Well sallyann. The real problem is these guys get set up many times. Its been a while and I don't pretend to remember everything, but I remember that he was trying to make the Death penalty against the law. He knew that many people went to there death and didn't do the crime they were convicted of. He blew the whistle on the then State Attorney for Sending the Chicago 7 to death row and knowingly with holding information that proved they were Innocent. Hell one of the kids, was in St Louis in jail when the little girl they were said to have killed was killed. That was something the Jury should have known. The Guy that should have been put in jail walked free. There is no excuse why the AG shouldn't be in prison. I think the AG set Ryan up and sent him to prison. I guess if you well connected, you can get away with murder. Ryan signed a executive order outlawing the death penalty. He can't be a bad man if he did that.

"Ryan signed a executive order outlawing the death penalty. He can't be a bad man if he did that." Unless of course you are a member of one of the families whose son or daughter got raped and killed and Gov Ryan stopped them from being put to death because of his convictions not the state of Illinois.

This wonderful man you espouse was taking bribes for state contracts amongst other things. He is a scumbag. Further his felony convictions should nullify his executive actions.

I highly reccomend you actually read up on this vile felon before you comment.

Perhaps all politician should serve a maximum of 3 turns, 2 in office and 1 in prison - mandatory or 1 in office and 1 in prison. We would then see how quickly that would clean up the coruption that is rampet (sp).

Chicago citizens I ask you, Why do you keep putting people in office that line their pockets as they remove your rights? Why do you stay in a place where gang bangers rule and not rebel against the lack of civic pride? Why do you not join together and take up arms, if necessary, to clean out the criminals who murder your children and kill each other with such abandon you can't even sit in your yards on a summer day? If it is beyond your abilities to defend the peace you deserve why do you not go somewhere more safe to raise your families. I do not ask this from any position of disrespect. I truly can not understand why you would sacrifice your freedom & not fight back, or leave that city for a more secure life.

That is a question I ask myself all the time. Are there no "intelligent" people in Chicago? I can see where the "low life teat suckers" would vote for more free food and free phones, but where are the rest? Even the out state people vote in Governors, and reps. that are crooked. One would think that some "intelligent" people would be mad as hell and do something about all the violence and corruption in both Chicago and in the state.

                    Just plain hard to understand.

Those who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

They just gave out drivers license's to illegals despite the fact they are illegal thereby under federal law ( which only is enforced when it fits King Barrys agenda ) do not qualify for them. Why you may ask?... Very simple, to further develop the democrat voting base. that simple. Or do you really believe they give a fat rats patut about Jaun and his family? or yours when these clowns start crashing into you and your family. Do you also believe now that they have documentation they will stay where they are? Why would they?

Ripper Crew or Chicago Rippers was a satanic cult and organized crime group composed of Robin Gecht (who once worked for the serial killer John Wayne Gacy) and three associates (Edward Spreitzer with brothers Andrew and Thomas Kokoraleis).[1] They were suspected in the disappearances of 18 women in Chicago, Illinois in 1981 and '82. Gecht and his gang allegedly drove around in a van looking for prostitutes to sacrifice in Gecht's apartment. They claimed to have removed one breast from each victim and eaten it as Gecht read passages of The Satanic Bible. It has also been said that they, after severing the breast, took turns raping the open wound. They then proceeded to each masturbate into the flesh of the breast, chop it into pieces, and devour it.

These men were arrested in 1982 for the stabbing of a teenaged prostitute.[2] Although Gecht's associates and other witnesses implicated him in some of the deaths, investigators never had enough evidence to charge him with murder. Gecht is serving 120 years in Menard Correctional Center for mutilating and raping an 18-year-old prostitute.[2]

Edward Spreitzer and Andrew Kokoraleis were sentenced to death.[3] On March 16, 1999, 35-year-old Kokoraleis was executed by lethal injection at Tamms Correctional Center in Southern Illinois for the 1982 strangulation murder of Lorraine Borowski,[4] a 21-year-old secretary at a real estate office who had been abducted on her way to work. Her mutilated body was found in a cemetery.[3]

Defense attorneys unsuccessfully argued that Kokoraleis was coerced into confessing. They also argued that new information cast doubt on the credibility of confessions by two co-defendants who accused him. Andrew, who had been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Rose Beck Davis, was the first prisoner executed at a new super-maximum-security prison in southern Illinois.[5]

Thomas Kokoraleis was convicted of Lorraine Borowski's murder and received a life sentence. His life sentence was later commuted and he is now scheduled to be released on September 30, 2017; he is currently in Illinois River Correctional Center.[2]

On March 7, 1999, Robin Gecht's son David and three others were charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting death which police believe to be gang-related.[6]

Edward Spreitzer's death sentence was commuted in George H. Ryan's last-minute commutation of all death sentences in Illinois in 2003. Incidentally, Andrew Kokoraleis' was Governor Ryan's only execution, just over two months into his administration. Kokoraleis was also the last inmate executed in Illinois, almost 12 years before Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation to abolish the death penalty on March 9, 2011, and commuted 15 death sentences to life imprisonment without parole.[7]

from what I read Ryan commuted the death sentences to life without parole. is this correct? Thomas K is up for parole in 2017 but I don't see where Ryan commuted his sentence. Read that it was a 70 yr sentence.

So whats wrong with Illinois and especially Chicago , they seem to be turning out leaches , just sucking the life out of the place they swore to represent for their own financial gain . Well here You are now with Jesse Jackson jr. thats just been filling His pockets with his peoples money, this probably has been going on for sixteen or seventeen years but I think they are claiming its just something thats happened recently , Well anyway it just seems like Chicago really needs to investigate their people thats going to represent them.
