High winds and heavy rains brought more misery to the Eastern Seaboard Thursday, a day after a squall line thundered across the South and produced widespread flooding, tornadoes and violent storms that leveled homes and killed people. The Weather Channel's Julie Martin reports.
High winds and heavy rains brought more misery to the Eastern Seaboard Thursday, a day after a squall line thundered across the South and produced widespread flooding, tornadoes and violent storms that leveled homes and killed at least two people.
The National Weather Service issued watches and warnings predicting damaging winds, flooding and perhaps even more tornadoes as the storm system pushed toward the Atlantic.
Major cities including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York were lashed by gusts of up to 60 mph Thursday, strong enough to topple trees and bring down power lines. The accompanying storms could bring up to an inch of rain per hour and lead to flash flooding, the weather service said.
Even stronger winds, gusting to 65 mph, were predicted for Boston and parts of New England.
Nearly 430,000 homes and businesses were without electricity following the storm Thursday, about half of them in Massachusetts, according to National Grid and Western Mass. The rest of the outages were spread throughout the Northeast and included nearly 74,000 customers in Connecticut, 74,000 in Rhode Island and 37,000 in New Jersey, according to local utility providers.
Traffic delays were also in effect due to the windy conditions. Some flights to Newark International Airport were delayed more than two and a half hours and flights going to LaGuardia Airport in New York were delayed a little more than an hour, according to the FAA.
On Wednesday, eight different states confirmed tornadoes: Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi and Indiana.
The hardest-hit area was Adairsville, Ga., where a tornado ripped through Interstate 75, overturning cars and destroying homes and businesses.
“The sky was swirling,” Theresa Chitwood, who owns the Adairsville Travel Plaza, told the Associated Press.
Anthony Raines, 51, was killed when a tree crashed down on his mobile home, crushing him in his bed, Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton told the Associated Press. Nine other people were hospitalized for minor injuries, authorities said.
Another death reported from the storms was in Tennessee, where a tree fell Tuesday onto a storage shed a man had taken shelter in.

Workers look for personal belongings after a tornado struck Adairsville, Ga., Wednesday.
The Adairsville Supermarket, a 55,000-square-foot staple in the town since 1958, was reduced to a massive pile of rubble, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Only a few people were inside at the time of destruction, but all of them managed to escape unscathed, the store’s owner Dilip Patel told the newspaper.
Across the street, a hotel was also a nearly-flattened pile of rubble and most of the roof was gone.
“It was like you just opened it up with a can opener,” Trish Cooper, a hotel guest, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You could just see everything.”
The storms were largely caused by a mass of cold air and high winds colliding with warm, wet air from the Gulf of Mexico that brought balmy temperatures to much of the East and Midwest.
As the cold air takes hold, a return to winter proper follows suit.
Winter storm warnings were in effect Thursday in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, while parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest hunkered down under wind chills predicted to dip as low as 55 degrees below zero in North Dakota.
"Dangerous wind chills of 20-50 degrees below zero are possible for the Dakotas and Minnesota," Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth said.
In more populous areas, including the Twin Cities, wind chills had potential to reach minus 40 degrees, the weather service said.
Those in the Upper Midwest who escape the worst of the wind chills still won’t have it easy. Forecasters warned of heavy lake-effect snows from Wisconsin to Western New York.

A tornado formed between Greenville and Spartanburg S.C. but never touched down. We barely dodged a bullet yesterday, it went right over our house! The rain was so thick you couldn't even see 2 feet away at one point. Very powerful and very scary storm.
Thank God for that but crazy weather nonetheless; in Virginia Beach it was super windy over night into this morning with garbage cans turned w/some spilling out. Haven't watched the news; the wind isn't letting up.
Good to hear you are safe Kittstar. In the Dakotas here. Under a winter storm warning, but we really need the moisture. We have a windchill of minus 26 right now, with the wind picking up more all the time. Tomorrow night to get to minus 40 windchill they are predicting for our area. As they saying goes here, it will be a 3 dog night in bed with you to keep you warm. Lol. We are hardy lot, so is mostly an inconvenience. Most here are prepared for this kind of weather. We barely had any snow or bitter cold last winter, so we are due for this. That being said, it is/can be a dangerous situation when you are traveling if you must. So have your trunk packed with a survival kit, and always dress for the cold if you must be outdoors.
lots worse to come
Oh scary...climate change is just AWFUL!!!
I saw a giant cloud that looked like Dick Cheney, and it tried to blow my house over!
and in cowpens all we got was some wind and barely any rain
Rex. It is not climate change, the REPUBLICANS said so.
Looks like AL Gore was on to something. Hey, lets burn more coal. that should fix it. lol
Kornfed. I can assure that it was not Chaney. If it had been Chaney, He would have shot you in the face.
wascigarman
Clouds cant shoot silly!
Glad everything is okay Kittstar.
It is so cold in Mn. my balls turned into cubes.

It's a pure shame that these weather events keep missing trolls like you. We can only hope and pray that eventually you will die off because we sure don't need you contributing to the gene pool. What is your IQ? Somewhere around a 10? I've seen cockroaches that are smarter. That's probably why your still alive because roaches are also hard to get rid of. Put that pea brain of yours to use and try reading a few books and actually learning something.
why dont you people just move instead of endangering your life and wasting our taxpayers money!!
Gee, it's winter time. Isn't it a fact that it might get cold, and snowy in some parts of the country, and rain in other parts, during winter? Must be a slow news day again.
Glad your ok,
nothin like a wind and a wide open field eh stonepipe. bout 6 degrees warmer here.
since you live in some weather free fantasy world can we all stay at your place?
no just another diversion piece
Kornfed. Are you sure? Chaney is pretty cloudy, and he has a weapon.
Morning Stonepipe and Scooter,
Stonepipe, if your balls that turned into cubes need to be changed once more into shriveled raisins, I'll be sending you some of this real soon since we live next door to you in over there in Mn:
Like prunes? LOL
Lot different up there then it was last winter eh guys. glad i dint go back this year, had two offers but i figured i dodged the bullet once no sense pushing it.
Scooter, are you down there in Florida soaking up all the sunshine?
I wish,
nope , im at home bout 350 miles SE of The twins. worked 80 miles from Fargo last year as well. Take I-80 east till ya hit the Mississippi. Boom your close.
Hi Scooter, Stonepipe and Okeeboy - GA from Barbados!
So sorry to hear you having difficulties with wind chill et alia! (sarc).
Today in Bridgetown 81 degrees F and a cool easterly wind, blowing in delightful breezes. As a matter of fact, after I get off work this afternoon, I may have to have a cool, refreshing libation with some type of rum in it. I'll hoist one for all of you "winter warriors" Salud!!!
PS: the cubes I will have in my libation will be ice, however! LOL
Oh yeah? Well i'm gonna go fly 2 kites!
Good morning to all! Jack, must admit a tad bit envious, may bundle up again, break out a lawn chair, (out of the wind, it is sunny) and pretend I am with you.
Hey Stonepipe, the idea of "creative thinking 101 comes to mind - anyone can take a "mini-vacation" in their mind and it at least helps the morale! I do not envy y'all facing winter, as i spent many a time out in the "hawk" and icy, frigid temps - and do not miss a minute of it!
GA Jack,
Need more ice i know where you can get it free.
Hell, Scooter and I will deliver! And how did an Okie end up in North Dakota? Good luck to you.
Still heavy winds in Smithfield as well.I'm just glad I don't have to cross the JRB this morning.
Yep i know i wouldnt want to get on JRB's bad side.
The tornado that hit Adairsville literally went within a half mile east of our office. I work about 10 miles from Adairsville. The tornado was not on the ground when it went by us, scary here, none the less. Then we had extremely high winds here last night which was still causing trees to fall on power lines and lots of people who had no storm damage are without electricity. What a scary day. Best wishes to all who had damage or injuries and condolences to the family of the person that lost their life.
Stay warm you guys up North!
Will you help? (Providing of course the heels match the name).
Scooter, I find your reply to be both SEXIST and AGGRESSIVE!
All I can say is "Good man!" LMAO
Note: Before anyone wants to burn me at the stake, I'm just having some fun with my friend. Don't take what I said to heart.
I can't believe you said that
Gotta see who's paying attention somehow guys, I'm joking.....maybe....... Monicas out of town, but i swear that woman knows when i am smiling through the phone..... And as she uses a picture of Loreena Bobbit as a screen-saver......hey I'm crazy..not suicidal.
May there be NO Destruction of Homes and Properties and Infrastructure. May there be NO Loss of lives as every life is precious. May God give the Courage and Strength to the Americans to Rebuild their Homes, Lives and Infrastructure that is destroyed much better. GOD Bless the Americans. GOD BLESS THE USA.

Not story related but a word of advice for storms and flooding. Filling sand bags to the point they are round won't help when you're stacking them. I notice this in a picture of the White House being sand bagged for flooding. Leave room in the bag to form to each other. Basket balls won't stack.
Looks like those firefighters wore out some chainsaw blades getting to that poor woman. Their butts are draggin'. Wishing all of you a better day today.
Well it is windy today but the sun it out. Today will be a much better day than yesterday here in the south. But it looks like it is headed to the North to the bitter ones.
North to the bitter ones? ... NORTH TO THE BITTER ONES ?........ya gotta admit folks ...THAT'S a good line...
So much for southern hospitality.....
They shared a storm with ya, what more do ya want?......geeez ...no pleasing some folks.....
Bitter Cold yourkidding me, get it. Yes we may have shared it together, how do I know where you are from. I have allot of clients and friends in the North and was born there. But I prefer the South due to the weather, but I guess yesterday was a bit different. Thanks IA Scooter, where are you located anyway :)
Have a blessed day all.
I'm gonna guess IA
Well, I am bitter. There is some truth to it.
And you TF ? Where are you from?
NJ
Yea I see that now, Daaaa Well I have AWESOME clients in Fairlawn, NJ. Love them to death. Yea I see scooter now, yea IA. I will be glad when tomorrow gets here lol
LOL. I'll be glad when summer arrives and I hit the beach. I hate winter.
Amen winter is depressing crap, but I love it when it kills all the bugs. But at least we do not have the snow. We may get one a year and it is gone the next day which is nice. When I lived in PA it would last forever and NC month after month.
agreed TF.
welcome aboard carol beach side or in land?
I am in the foothills, we are about 4 hours north west from the beach. You can bet your sweet biffy come April my a...rs will be at the beach. This winter has been actually mild, you know what they say. In like a lamb out like a lion. Well winter came in like a lamb but it seems it will go out like a lion. So I guess the saying is true. We are near a large lake. Check it out and you could see the views we have here, I just love SC http://www.discoverkeowee.com/
Carol.....send pictures.....just wondered, got a bro in a "Holla" (as he says it) down Charleston way. hope to stop by and see em if my damn w-2s ever get here to do tax's . BTW just kidding bout the pics......maybe.....
Just know that since I can't let a good possible joke slide, I was just searching for a wild and really bad ghetto scene to post as my neighborhood and neck of the woods. But I can't find a good but still believable one.
Wait, I did upload a picture of my wedding reception hall. Ahh the memories

Ya'll are crazy. If you go to Charleston you have to see the Angel Oak. It is so dam amazing. It is on Johns Island. We went last month. You have to go and also here is a link to read about the tree. They have bolders under it to keep the limbs from breaking, and cables in the tree to hold up the branches. I am sure he has heard of this. http://www.angeloaktree.com also you have to hit up Wet Willies LMAO that is the name and do not ask lol www.wetwillies.com but it was awesome do not remember leavin. Love the photo Tf now that is frigging hillarious!!
Sorry to hear about the bad storms and following deep freeze up north. We are experiencing mild rain today in Florida and the temps are supposed to go down to +40 F tonight, but only for one night. We will be back to the 70's this weekend.
So here is the commercial. visitflorida.com is the website. We are open for business and this is the best time of year to come. Escape that 40 below and play some golf. Peace. Keep warm.
But get out by May when hurricane season starts. I sat thru three and left.
Thank you sir may i have another?....thank you sir may i have another...thank you sir may i have another...hey...wait a minute.....
During Sandy a large tree fell against my house in the night scary us. Now last night with the wind howling all night all I could think of was a tree hitting the house, even though we cut the tallest ones down and the ones remaining would not cause damage. I guess it all gets me nervous now. Couldn't sleep a wink. I'm at work now ready to drop!. :)
We lost trees during Sandy as well. We were lucky that none hit our house but I can understand how you feel. You never really get over something like that.
And to the rest of you, stay warm, stay safe and stay away from windows.
TF,
Sorry to hear that bud. Glad everyone was ok. As for the sleepless nights, these to shall pass.
LOL can't wait to get home. Meantime I'm about to go get my 5th cup of coffee.
The wind is rattling the roof at work.
The roof at work? bet your saying, come on already give... give damn you!..then I'm outta here time to go home and rest... well after a "quick" stop by the bar of course, after all 'she' don't know your off early...yet. ...And we can always fool them ...right up to the time we walk in and open our mouths anyway.
Oh the house is empty right now. I would have hours of uninterrupted sleep time.
GM Scooter, TFNJ
I agree!!! The winds here were bad, but in the overnight hours. Damn it! Was hoping for a fallen tree or two on the road in to work this morning though!!! ;-) Or at least a power outage at the office!
But then you would be up all night again thereby upsetting the family routine. Nope the more i think about it the wise and responsible choice here is the bar. Tell her that you went ahead and "took one for the family"......if it works let me know, i may use it. if not ...well its been nice.....
GM Nana,
What that tree didn't fall and block your drive? why not? ..."of course it isn't there now boss, it fell ..but the people sure did a fine job removeing the debris and back filling the hole dont you think" ?
Hope all are well to all my southeren friends, you think your congress people are going to ask for federal money to help out,you know money they voted no for Sandy victims
They'll ask with their "hats in hand" and their collective tail between their legs. Speaker Bonehead MAY have learned his lesson but I doubt it since he is a Tea Bagger puppet.
No we work together and get things cleaned up on our own here in the South. We get er done down here. We pull together as neighbors should and help each other out.
Good job Carol. Same here and if those two got out of the basement and quit playing the Party politics game long enough to look around they may see some of that as well....or at least SHOULD..if not a chang of location is definitely a good idea.
Amen took a walk at lunch, we have a 50 foot pine tree down in our back yard, looks like another clean up this weekend. I am sure the neighbors have the same. Chainsaw time. Actually I love working in the woods and wood pile. LOL But could have done that without the storm.
I live in Florida and all we got was strong winds and some rain overnight.
I feel so sorry for those that was effected by this storm, please stay safe and warm
Alright,Thats enought, We have to do something about these deaths, and these storms...Obama needs to outlaw all storms.....
Is this story true?
We will never know as MSNBC has ZERO credibility MSNBC is falsifying the news.
They have been caught again LYING not REPORTING.
http://politics.kfyi.com/cc-common/mainheadlines3.html?feed=104707&article=10743545
This is the 3rd incident that has been caught how many more are out there?
?????????
Is this victor real ?
Got news for ya "Vic" when a post starts stupid, or insulting it is seldom read and never taken seriously.
I just saw the same exact post in another article, so maybe Victor is a stupid bot.
Maybe you two should have been in the storm, it was not fun at all.
?????????
women....( rolls eyes ).....go figure.....
lol, I really don't get what prompted her to write that. i'm so confused.
Don't worry, I believe that's what they call "getting in touch with your feminine side"
I'm flustered and flabbergasted.
I was bemused...then bored...then a little askew... before becoming slightly neurotic , and then just a tad bit deranged....it was a long journey, but know what? It was worth it....i like it here and for some reason the voices all know me.
Guy I admit it I screw up sorry if I messed up your day it was by no intentions.
Again Sorry.
LOL no problem Carol. I was trying to see how our posts could have possibly offended you. Now it makes sense.
My day tends to get messed up all onits own. Anything written here has no effect.
But Scooter is in a happy place right now it seems. I'm more in a dazed place.
It did not offend me at all. Sometimes you just click too soon, been a hell of a night and week, well tomorrow is Friday. Have a blessed day all.
Lots of room here TF, and Carol of course your invited along, but lets be real here guys... ya gotta bring your own booze .
On the serious side, carol,as i told TF this too shall pass. Good luck and thanks for playing.
LOL when I lived in Florida I use to love the hurricane parties, I would have loved to have you two there. It would have been a real blast!
I keep forgetting none of this type of weather happened before Social Media. Thank goodness, we can all discuss the overall scientific causes together in layman's terms to come up with correct conclusions of the global impact of a powerful rain storm.
Matty. Your point is taken and understood. However, the violent changes in weather on an almost daily basis will not be so funny or you will not sound so smart when we start losing more and more precious crops. Or we reach a point where the government can't even help the next disaster area because of the velocity of events. Personally, i think that Al Gore is a weenie but global warming is not a hoax.
It's not happening any oftener nor getting more violent. It just gets reported oftener when it does because the stories are cherry picked by the media. Disagree with so called experts, and this is what you get....all I said was that climate change is scary.
Rex-1306908

This person, Saturnsrim, sounds really, really angry.
Here in the Boston area, it's 60+ degrees today (yesterday too) very unusual for the last week of January. Last week it was only 8 degrees, with wind chills in the minus 0.. Monday the kids were shoveling off an area on the pond across the street to skate, today you can go fishing on open water, in just two days melt. Last night, I took my motorcycle out for a quick spin, just to get the oil pumping. It was still 55 degrees after sundown.
Today, the winds are gusting in the 50s now, and rain is heavy at times, and blowing sideways.
But, I'd rather have 60 and rain, than 8 degrees and snow!!
If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a minute, it'll change!
Wait for it. It was 60 here tuesday, 7 wed.
Pittsburgh. Two days ago I put on the girl's winter jackets, gloves, and knit hats only to walk outside to it being 65 degrees. So today I dressed them in lighter clothing only to walk out into 25 degrees with 35 mph winds and snow. Pennsylvania can really confuse your morning routines.
Same for SD Shawn. Was close to 50 above for several days and the next day it's 60 degrees colder with those -40 wind chills and snow. Saturday to be 40 above. You snap your fingers and you have a nice or cold day in an instant. We used to be able to predict our seasons here. Winter was winter beginning in Sept. or Oct. and 3 feet of snow that stayed all winter and snowed all the time. Last yr. no winter to speak of. Was shirt weather. We also say what you said about waiting a minute and it will change. A few yrs. ago, it was a very unusual 80 above and that night a raging blizzard moved in. Temps up and down within a few hours. The same for Summer months. Weather has always been unpredictable here, but never like it has been the past 5 years. It's interesting indeed!
Grew up in a storm bunker with other kids on my block. I think our parents thought it was a good time to put us underground so they could play cards and have shots. They only came down three times and each time you could tell by the looks on their faces this was a very bad storm. Now I live in Arizona and all I have to worry about is sunburn and loosing your AC in the summer. Do not stay in August, unless you need 115-125 degree weather. Better to spend you time having fun in a much cooler climate.
A shout out is appropriate to all of the citizens living in GA, TN, SC, KY, NC,AL and my home state of FL to remind Senators Chambliss(R), Isakson(R), Corker(R), Graham(R), Scott(R), McConnell(R), Paul(R), Burr(R), Sessions(R) And Rubio(R) that just a day before these climate related disasters occured, they were voting "NO" for HR152, the Disaster Relief Appropriations Bill. If you want relief money from the Federal Government (We the People) you need to support it! Go and enjoy your tea!
A shout out is appropriate here to all those who still play "party politics"......pay attention just once... Diversion is a dangerous discourse....And buying into it is idiotic.
Never mind TF my error, yes I also need more coffee. Have a Blessed Day!
Wow, I thought my house was going to blow down last night!
Only down? hell around here they can blow up, down, sideways, ya never know. Gives the whole thing an air of mystery. As in...Surprise your house is ok !! ....just relocated.
I live in the Twin Cities South Metro. Woke up this morning, sub zero, arctic windchills.... Meh. Another day up in MN.
Met them Twins last year, at least they aren't the jealous type when you leave one for the other, and then come back,.In the end however they both gave me the cold shoulder.
Hiya Scooter. That's why I live in a suburb! ;-)
One of the two outfits i contract with is in the burbs, the other evidently went to hell....with my blessing.
LOT of that goin' around.
Well I haven't heard or seen anything of obama or federal aid. I guess the citizens in the South are not important as the ones in New York or New Jersey. Maybe our fat governor needs to get on Tv ranting and raving.
Strange, i noticed that as well. politics were not mentioned in the middle of a weather article.....course neither were Space aliens.....but you can chalk it up to bad reporting i guess.
Scooter, I've told you before YOU HAVE TO STOP MAKING SENSE!
It confuses some of the readers here.
Sorry Okee....momentary glimpse in from the real world, seen pretty much what i figured closed the door and locked it this time. The sheeple and lemmings in there look seriously ill, rabies or the dreaded liberalism decease perhaps, i hear tell it's going around and if you catch it there is no hope of a cure nor sanity again.
Scooter, don't give up hope for the libs. I've never told anyone this before, but in my younger days... I too was a libitard. There. It's out now.
I'm happy to say I recieved treatment and crossed over to being an Independent who see's evil in both parties. I find it helps to not be tied to an agenda when thinking things through.
Wow. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off me by coming out of the DNC closet.
I'm just going to take it one day at a time. My real friends will understand.
Its Ok Okee
Many of us back then joined the lib cause, Espesialy the whole "End the war" thing. until we got back to the world anyway.
But its fun to be an independent. "sworn to fun loyal to none" type thing. I did have a scare of a relapse awhile back...turned out i was just lazy though which of course led me to think i was "there" again...libland. But luckily the thought process kicked in hence putting an end to those concerns.
Scooter, I'm relieved to see you bounced back. It's easy to have a relapse in times of trouble.
I'm toying with starting a home for the recovering politically addicted. Lord knows everyone needs a friend when going through such dramatic changes in their life.
LOL and have a happy.
My heart goes out to all of you up North about Sandy. Us down here in the South take these tornados and hurricanes very serious. Especially when you see an F4 or F5 live on TV and its coming straight toward you. Talking about the one that hit Tuscaloosa about a year or 2 ago.
Dana, take your insurance policy to a lawyer. its worth his fees. Be certain he checks storm clauses. if it states "act of god or nature" get a new policy. Then do like me i got a 450 K policy on this place ( bout 150K total worth ), no way in hell a tornado's going to touch me now.
Well bout time to get off here and go shovel my walk out to the outbuilding,( and the beer fridge within). So i will leave you with this old chestnut.....
I saw a Illegal fall into the icy river this morning about 8:20. As a responsible citizen, I informed the local office of emergency services. It's now 6:00 PM and they still haven't responded! I'm starting to think I've wasted a stamp.
Have a great day folks and stay warm.....
lol. you too scooter.
