'Today's Blue Light Special': 10-pound bag of pot

Police in Seattle are investigating how a large package of marijuana wound up being delivered to the stock room of a local Kmart store.

Police said the package -- 10 pounds of marijuana wrapped in garbage bags and encircled by packing peanuts and pages from a Korean newspaper soaked with cleaning fluid -- arrived at the store shortly after noon Monday.

Delivery information on the package shows it was originally to be shipped by UPS from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, police said, but it never made it to the City of Brotherly Love.

Instead, the return address was to a longstanding Kmart in the north end of Seattle.

Store employees called police, and the marijuana was placed into evidence.

“Today’s Blue Light Special: 10 Pounds of Weed,” quipped the Seattle PD’s blog headline announcing the marijuana’s seizure in an obvious joke on the chain's venerable in-store sales gimmick. A call to the Seattle Kmart's manager was not answered.

Though owning pot is legal in Washington state, that big of a stash wouldn’t appear to pass the legal sniff test.

Voter-approved Initiative 502 makes it legal for anyone 21 or over to possess up to only an ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of “solid marijuana-infused product” (pot brownies, cookies and such) or 72 ounces of “marijuana-infused liquid.”

Washington’s Liquor Control Board is working on rules to implement the state’s new recreational marijuana law and faces a Dec. 1 deadline.

The sooner more states follow Washington and Colorado and end this prohibition and "The war on (some) Plants", then cannabis will be no big deal, use and abuse will drop as seen in Portugal, billions will be saved in not prosecuting and jailing Americans for non-violent personal lifestyle choices, billions more can be raised in taxes, and hemp products for fabrics, plastics, fuel and food will become commonplace. It is only a matter of time!

Pot is no different then gun control. Both just bring out the bad elements of society. Both are no different than prohibition during the 30's.

Yup, they're almost exactly alike, expect marijuana, in the thousands of years it's been used in human culture, has never be responsible for a single death. Not one. Guns on the other hand kill 10s of thousands (at minimum) per year.

Other than that, they are almost identical.

It is NOT the responsibility of the Federal government to protect us from ourselves. The Government is supposed to protect the citizens from outside attacks and clearly that ain't happening. My feeling is GTFO of state issues and let us handle our own issues. There is no shortage of bigger problems to work on like the F*ing $16 Trillion that has been squandered on useless wars to get the rest of the World to hate Americans and thus delay the message of Freedom. Who really cares if someone chooses to light up a joint in their own home? Is it really really anyone elses business or skin off their azz ?

Border Patrol reports that 130 pounds of marijuana (on average) crosses the Mexican border into the US every hour around the clock. How many hundreds of thousands of acres of pot plants does it take to keep up that rate of delivery, and which members of Congress just conveniently happen to own that much land in Mexico?

I find that odd , 130 lbs per hour . It must be headed for the midwest or further east (I'm from california) . I haven't known anyone for about maybe 15 years or more that would even smoke the buttweed coming up from mexico . Everyone I know that still smokes , gets it from local indoor growers (either a variety of cush or indica ) .

@ #4 backtobasics - ok, let's see - a marijuana plant grown in the sun could easily yield 2 pounds. So 130 pounds = 65 plants per hour. Assuming each plant takes up an area of, oh, 5 feet by 5 feet (to be generous), that means each hour's worth of import = 1625 square feet (25 x 65). An acre has 43,560 sq ft, so 43560/1625=26.8. So one acre supplies one day's worth of imported weed. So if we are to believe the feds (lmao if you do), it takes a mere 365 acres to supply the united states with 130 lbs of pot per hour around the clock. Since Mexico has 487.5 million acres .... under the feds numbers that would mean 365/487,500,000 acres of Mexico is used to grow marijuana. That would be a laughably small area.

Better take off your tin foil hat, no members of congress own land in Mexico growing pot.

BTW, I suspect the 130 lbs per hour figure is so far off base as to be laughable. Probably more like 1300 lbs per hour or more. Even then, it is an immense country and I suspect there is no shortage of politicians in mexico willing to look the other way for a little $$$.

If I were Mexico, I would legalize weed and tell the cartels 'we won't hassle you, we don't care where it goes.' End of the violence over weed in Mexico and it would literally flood the United States. What would our precious little DEA do then? Wring their hands over the demon weed that is coming to turn our children into zombies!!!!

Some of you people need to get a brain and use it.

Actually Mac if you bothered to do any research you would know that many of the bureaucrats in the DEA are hold overs from the Bush Administration who still have a hard on for Marijuana. Real winners like Michele Leonhart - who is so stupid that she said that the fact that 1180 children were killed in Mexico in drug related violence in 2009 'is a sign of success in the fight against drugs.' She also asserts that marijuana has no medical benefit despite the fact that the AMA says it does (of course she isn't a doctor and thus has no clue what she is talking about - her academic credentials amount to a degree from Bemidji State Teacher's college, a school best known for its creative writing programs. Certainly a stellar academic background for deciding US drug policy). Not sure what she is smoking other than a desire to keep her job. Sooooo......... thanks for playing. Yet another right wing fail.

And if you do a little checking you'll find that it was the FDR administration that gave us federal marijuana laws to begin with. Hardly a Republican! Response from an old Republican: First, before you start ranting, learn the terminology. You cannot own an assault rifle without a Federal license, because it has a selector that allows automatic fire. You can, however, own "assault weapon" that look ugly but is less powerful and less lethal than weapons I own that don't meet the definition. Second, I couldn't care less about how much pot you own or ingest. Must I still go?

Pot is still illegal in every former slave state which were the only states Romney won in the election, last year. In other words, the Republican stronghold.

Obama said he smoked pot, Al Gore smoked it, Bill Clinton smoked it. Obviously, it is not a deterent to becoming President or Vice-President. So, what's the big hold up with legalizing it in states where they put people in chains and beat them with whips?

Indiana, Like the Federal Agencies can step up the war on drugs over President Obama wishes. Even Bush didn't mess with Cali and their medical pot. And the military is doing such a great job ignoring the President. 5 Generals and Admirals went down over their complaints on standing down over Benghazi's while the American Ambassador and seals were murdered.

The state of Washington has until Dec. 1, 2013 to come up with laws in regard to pot, following the referendum to legalize it, as yet it is still illegal in the state to carry more than 1 oz. For other states that want to legalize it, consider these things that the state of Washington has to figure out.

                        1. When is a person legally intoxicated? For drunks we have breathalyzers, but how much pot makes a driver impaired?

                        2. How will legal pot be sold? The article says infused foods, beverages how much "infusion" should there be?

                        3. Where will legal pot be sold?

                        4. For people that say this is "income" for the state...how much state imposed tax should be levied on it? As much as for legal cigarettes?

The law allows for pot to be bought and sold, but you can't just stand on the street corner and smoke it. It can't be consumed in the public view. As yet there is no legal place to purchase pot.

Also at this time there are no legal growers either. How will they be licensed? How much can they grow on their land? Who is going to handle the crop (wholesalers) and how will it be distributed (retailers)?

These are some of the questions that were not addressed by the referendum. I am not sure how it is being handled in Colorado, but it is something to think about.

Vickie--how I see it handled in little ol" Mason county is that the cops pull you over--even if you blow under the legal limit of alcohol--or even if you blow nothing and you act "suspicious" (now who doesn't act suspicious or nervous when being pulled over by the police and questioned?)they give you a DUI and tow your car assuming you are high on pot. Thing is, the police don't give a blood test, a private citizen is not allowed to get their own blood test to prove innocence unless a doctor approves (and what doctor approves over the phone when a person is on the street?). Big money maker for this county--the local judge is known for siding with the police over what a person might say --so $5000 for a lawyer, $280 for towing --and maybe you will have your DUI dropped--otherwise the County gains $5000 in fines, the local drug treatment at least $2,500--not counting for paying into over priced towing companies. Take care--the people who should make us safe are out to make money and using the pot law to make it so.

Colorado and Washington are being used as "proving grounds" for legalization. It's a great first step, and no doubt there will be problems along the way. But what a great revenue producer for the government! I'm 46 this year, and really believed this would happen almost twenty years ago! But, it's happening, and I think it's a great day for Americans AND Mexico. Once it's legal everywhere, there will be no pot profits fueling the violence in Mexico, and the gangs here, except crack, etc., but I believe that once pot smokers can come out of our closets, more will be willing to "snitch" on the BAD drug dealers! FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD IN HEAVEN WE (will be) FREE AT LAST!!

Dan--maybe free at last-I think a long time before you can actually say that--I don't think you must have read my above post about the reality of what is happening now---still a long road for those that smoke and for those that don't (being illegally accused in road side pull overs).

They need to raise the amount you can have. To grow a years supply during a growing season, you will need to grow more than one ounce. 1 pound is a more realistic number. At least.

It's obvious that Martha Stewert had a hand in this. She needed it for one of her recipes.
