The archdiocese of Los Angeles apologized Thursday night and stripped retired Cardinal Roger Mahony of all public duties for allegedly covering up years of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests.
In a move that came hours after the release of personnel files detailing years of alleged abuse by Los Angeles priests, Archbishop José H. Gomez announced Thursday night that Thomas Curry, Mahony's longtime top aide, was also resigning as regional bishop of Santa Barbara.
The files indicated that Mahony and other top archdiocese officials maneuvered behind the scenes for years to protect molester priests.
Mahony will "no longer have any administrative or public duties," Gomez said in a statement.
NBC 4 of Los Angeles reported that as Mahony's vicar for clergy, Curry assigned priests and deacons and was responsible for promoting "spiritual and physical well-being" for all priests and deacons in the archdiocese.
Mahony was head of the Los Angeles archdiocese from 1985 to 2011, when Gomez succeeded him.
"I find these files to be brutal and painful reading," Gomez wrote in a letter to parishioners. "The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil. There is no excuse, no explaining away what happened to these children."

"We need to acknowledge that terrible failure today," he wrote.
Gomez said the church would "immediately report every credible allegation of abuse" and promised to support victims of priests' abuse.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Emilie Elias ordered release of the personnel files a week after internal church records revealed striking evidence of a coordinated campaign to shield priests accused of abuse.
The new files are especially damaging because they include the names of the accused priests, which the archdiocese — the largest Catholic diocese in the U.S. — had fought to protect.
Release of the files is expected to end years of legal battles over whether to identify the priests, the Los Angeles Times reported.

When the church starts investigating complaints and turning their own over to the police before the problem becomes public, then I will believe they are sorry or that they care. I truly believe that complaints were made to the church before their members went outside to the police.

Funny how a jewish rabbi got sentenced to 103 years recently for sexually abusing a girl but catholic priests only get thrown out of church--assuming they get any punishment at all--and only after YEARS of public outrage.

I was raised catholic at a time in this country when following Gods law meant something. By God's grace I read the bible cover to cover and realized that Roman Catholicism wasn't God's true religion. 30 years later stories like this continue to reinforce my decision to leave the church.

What does allowing priest to marry have to do with pedophilia? Married men have been convicted of sexually abusing boys and girls; it has nothing to do with whether they are married or not. The crime here is the coverup. Once authorities release the information, the abused can seek damages in court. Unfortunately for some, the statute of limitations has run out for criminal charges.

Statute of limitation for rape is 8 years. If the identity of the perpetrator is not known, but is later established through DNA testing, the prosecution can be commenced within one year of that identification (assuming the DNA was analyzed within two years of the offense).

I agree and I separated from my wife because she physically abuse my children when they are young and she followed the priest order instead of mine. A priest that is not even married and does not have a clue of what is really going on in my household or a priest that was not there when we both say I do in front of the altar. I had witness and none of those priest were one of them, infact none of them attend my wedding reception or banquet which was given to the guests.

What a royal embarrassment to the entire Catholic Church! When is this type of criminal behavior ever going to stop? All this negative publicity is giving the Catholic Churches a bad name which will affect the current parishioners in a very bad way.
The effects you mentioned were the purpose the faux priests were turned loose on parishioners by "progressive" seminaries since the postwar years and amped up after Vatican II. The Church has not crashed and burned but will take decades to recover if it manages to ferret out the other Mahonies from within the clergy.

As a native of very RC Anaconda, Montana and a long time resident of Massachusetts, (where the crimes were first brought to light) these outrages have been going for generations. I can only speak from personal experience, but when everyone at my old church found out that the new priest was a child molester (most people found out when he hung himself in the rectory) a good proportion decided to stop attending.

While I definitely dont think that a large proportion of priests are child rapists, and most are good people trying to do what they believe is right, the organization of the church put their reputation over children and allowed the evil priests to continue. They need to do a thorough cleansing of their institution in order to be trusted again. Kick out all priests, cardinals, bishops, and even the pope if any of them are found to have had any hand in the abuse. Show that you care about the children over your laws that you dont even follow. Or watch as the world slowly turns from what you preach.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the archdiocese of New York is keeping quiet today after his old diocese, the archdiocese of Milwaukee, confirmed that under his leadership the church paid individual sums of $20,000 to priests accused of molesting children
Dolan left the Milwaukee archdiocese in 2009 to become archbishop of New York, the second largest diocese in the country, and in 2010 became the head of the conference of bishops, the most visible Catholic role in the country. Isely, of SNAP, wondered if Dolan now presided over similar arrangements in other dioceses.
"Is this a nationwide policy by U.S. bishops to pay off priests? To dump them quietly into the community, and when they do this, they don't tell people who these individuals are," Isely said.
Months after Dolan left Milwaukee, the archdiocese there filed for bankruptcy, after more than 570 alleged victims came forward claiming abuse by priests.

Well here in springfield, IL, the bishop thomas gave 6 millions dollars each to 7 gays for being molested, three months after he became the bishop of this region and he did not reported it to the people, but he did inform the people he supports gay and lesbian marriage. Money is not going to cure the gays.

If any reasonably intelligent person thinks the Roman Catholic Church gives a Ratz-burgers behind about the “welfare” of anyone besides its own skin, they’ve completely deluded themselves. Mr. Mahony should have been escorted by the church officials, along with every one of the priests who have been named as child molesters, to the local police department.....and the Catholic Church should be the one pressing charges. BUT....it doesn't surprise me that that isn't happening. The RCC still hasn't apologized for the millions it killed (other Christians, primarily) in the Dark Ages, beginning in the 380 A.D. time frame. And, the bludgeoning of Central and South America......all in the name of (Jesus.....no) riches and church exploitation. This reaction is completely in line with all of what they have been for some 1700 years +. It is too bad, to. For they are one of the lines back to the Apostles. But, they left the Apostles teachings about the same time that they "married" into the Roman Empire.

Just as a byline to my first post. There were many, many African and European churches, in/around 325 A.D., that did break fellowship with those (that became the RCC), who did follow the teachings of the Apostles, and who did not compromise the truths of the Bible. And, there remain remnants of those original churches even today. Those were the ones who the RCC tried to stamp out for 1,000 years +. Millions of Christians died (during the Dark Ages) simply because they wouldn't compromise their faith. And, many Christians today, are dying because they won't compromise the message of their Leader, Jesus.
The sicko should go to jail for a very long time for aiding and abbetting abuse of those poor innocents. But no, the Catholic church continues to protect him and, implicitly, condones his evil behaviour. It's a shame there is no heaven nor hell, because this guy would rot in Hell if there was one What is it about the catholic priests that they are homosexuals and abusers of small children, mainly boys? Its about time justices is done in the archdiocese of los angeles. When I was living there I did not like him because he favored only people he knew and the spending of the funds was wrong. And when I said something about the fagget priest I was left along. And its not that I really did not like him, its because he was covering up everything. And I pray the new bishop does good things for los angeles. I was once part of the cursillo movement there and we really wanted our house for the cursillo movement so that we know where to go. But the bishop was selling all the properties of the church. So it did not make any sense of what we were trying to do when he attacked us from the rear. And they fired bishops that were married because the concealed that fact. Just like the bishop here in springfield, IL favors the fags and is giving money to the fags.

I went to the mass in 2011 where power was transferred from Mahony to Gomez, and I thought, not knowing anything about Mahony "you're creepy, I bet you covered up a whole lot of stuff."

Sorry Alex Jones, There will be no time soon that there will be a new generation of Catholic leadership with zero tolerance for pedophiles. You and others really need to read GOODBYE! GOOD MEN. Parents just need to stop leaving their children ALONE with priests and that includes church too! And I say priests because this article IS about pedophilia priests-particularly boys because girls are rarely raped by priests.

Case in point, one of the first priests convicted and imprisioned for child rape in Massachusetts, admitted that he (and many of his co-conspirators) "preferred girls, but settled on boys, because 'girls have a special rapport' with their mothers" and be more likely to report the assaults. Child sexual abuse (like rape in general) is much more connected with exercise of raw power than gender of the victim. Yes, you can look it up.
As Karma would have it, the aforementioned priest or one of his co-defendents was strangled to death in his prison cell. The assailant was never found, but was likely a victim of child sexual abuse himself or a friend or brother of one.
Civil authorities should arrest and prosecute this vile creature!
