Killeen Police Department
Patrick Edward Myers
A Fort Hood soldier pleaded guilty Thursday to involuntary manslaughter -- admitting he accidentally shot his friend while trying to scare away the hiccups.
Spc. Patrick Edward Myers, of Spartanburg, S.C., was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in military prison for fatally shooting 22-year-old Pfc. Isaac Lawrence Young, of Ash Grove, Mo., in the face in September while they were watching a football game at an apartment in Killeen, Texas.
Myers was also busted to private and will receive a bad-conduct discharge, the Associated Press reported.
Police said three men were inside the apartment on Sunday, Sept. 23, watching a football game and drinking alcohol when one of the men produced a handgun, handled it in an "unsafe manner," and shot the victim in the face.
An arrest affidavit obtained by the Associated Press in September said Myers apparently pointed a gun at the victim's head to scare him and stop the hiccups.
Myers said he thought the gun had dummy rounds when it was discharged.
The case was tried in military court on the Central Texas Army post because the both victim and suspect were soldiers. Myers has been in the Bell County Jail on a $1 million bond.

"Myers was also busted to private" - in this type of reporting, use of slang is inappropriate. Myers was reduced in rank to private.
What a dumb azz. To take a life for being an idiot and then only to be sentenced to 3 and 1/2 years is to easy. He still has a life to live although he will get no GI benefits I hope.

YUP.
Any questions?
I can answer "yup" to many of your questions but I have never shot someone to cure hiccups. This may come as a surprise to you, but a vast majority of people in the U.S. Military are college educated and quite intelligent. It's only the people who do stupid stuff or stick their foot in their mouth that make the news.
Good point.
One of the first things you're taught in Basic is you NEVER point a weapon at something you don't intend to kill and always handle each and every weapon like it is loaded with live rounds. He definitely deserved more than 3 1/2 years and a bad conduct discharge.
I agree. It's imprudent and he should've known not to point a weapon, even if he thought it was loaded or not, especially at someone's face. He deserves to go to jail longer, even if his action we done by accident. I feel bad for the man who ot shot and his family.
Hasn't anyone blamed Obama for this yet?
what's the point in blaming the president? people control there own actions, this man was just plain stupid!
I was thinking about some awful things that happened in my life. I have been stolen from, and those that steal, naturally, cling to lies that paint me to be the worst sort instead of the other way around. There have also been instances where people literally dropped their responsibilities on me, or claimed they have, when we weren't even in the same branch of military service. Evidence reveals the truth. Too often, evidence has been ignored when it pertains to me. I have seen a lot of the "peanut gallery" in my lifetime.
Basically, if you could rely on someone to really think something through, any accusation, and not miss the jacka$$ laughing in the background, for no particular reason, of course, it would be me.
I cannot find any fault in this sentence. True, the guy likely regrets this accident...but it was an accident that could have easily been prevented.
I saw this episode on Dr. OZ, the only different was Dr. Oz was there to bring him back to life. Sorry I was wrong, that was Dick Cheny hunting. Can we all say GUN CONTROL.
I know that some of you out there would disagree, but none
if this would be happening if there was stronger gun restrictions! I cry for
those who are lost because someone accidently struck the trigger. I’m tired of
being 13 and hearing everyone saying I have to be responsible- when there are
bullets being shot left and right. I’m tired of people saying its wrong and
sad, but no one doing anything about it. I’m tired of people being lost for us
to finally realize how precious life is and that we shouldn’t be losing it by
bullets or by guns. If we want something to be changed, than we have to make a
difference- we can’t just expect things to go away. As long there is a gun
someone can pull its trigger, and as long as someone can pull its trigger
someone can be shot.
Just something to think about I guess.
I know there are people fighting gun restrictions, so thank you and I hope more do the same
Do we really need people do die in order for us to make a difference?
How do you handle a gun in an unsafe manner in the military.
I guess the WOLAR way?
Some things are worse than death and hiccups are one of them.
