Fort Hood soldier admits shooting friend while trying to cure hiccups

Killeen Police Department

Patrick Edward Myers

A Fort Hood soldier pleaded guilty Thursday to involuntary manslaughter -- admitting he accidentally shot his friend while trying to scare away the hiccups.

Spc. Patrick Edward Myers, of Spartanburg, S.C., was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in military prison for fatally shooting 22-year-old Pfc. Isaac Lawrence Young, of Ash Grove, Mo., in the face in September while they were watching a football game at an apartment in Killeen, Texas.

Myers was also busted to private and will receive a bad-conduct discharge, the Associated Press reported.

Police said three men were inside the apartment on Sunday, Sept. 23, watching a football game and drinking alcohol when one of the men produced a handgun, handled it in an "unsafe manner," and shot the victim in the face.

An arrest affidavit obtained by the Associated Press in September said Myers apparently pointed a gun at the victim's head to scare him and stop the hiccups.

Myers said he thought the gun had dummy rounds when it was discharged.

The case was tried in military court on the Central Texas Army post because the both victim and suspect were soldiers. Myers has been in the Bell County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Drinking and guns, not a good combination.

If he didn't have a gun he would have used a hammer or a club or a knife. He would have died anyway. It's not because there was a gun handy.

Regardless of the how, 3.5 years is a joke.

Amazing how fast they tried and convicted this guy but the muslim idiot that shot up Fort Hood is still waiting. I believe justice was done so why isn't it done for the muslim. He needs to go and meet his Allah and virgins. So not right that justice doesn't prevail for that idiot.

Leona:: Four simple words. Rank has its privilege. The guy who shot up Fort Hood was-- and still is-- an officer.

Number one rule, always, with any firearm is what....lets hear it....always assume the weapon is loaded!!! The second rule follows very closely after...never, ever point a weapon at someone unless you plan on using it. Both primary rules were broken by someone who should have known better. A agree with many others, the sentence was not enough.

WTF??? 3 1/2 years for killing someone. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is that what they call military justice? And being in the military one would think he would know how to handle guns...who the heck keeps "dummy rounds" in their guns? And to shoot a gun in someone's face to stop hiccups? Did he ever hear of a paperbag? JERK. My heart goes out to the parents of the dead soldier for the injustice done here.

What a gross miscarriage of justice. Only 3.5 years for killing a man is a joke, no wonder no one believes in our justice system anymore.

The gun did not kill him. Guns don't just up and kill people. Idiots holding the guns do,however, kill people.

The military prisons are not near as bad as State prisons. The animals are kept in check in the military. Also everyone is still a soldier so people tend to not put up with the animals as they do in State facility's.

Guns do not load themselfs and shoot people. People do. So stop blaming the guns. We were givn the right to own firearms to stop the government from running amouck just the way they have. Our gov. could care less about us. They only want to fill their own pockets and takes us for all they can. Each state should have a force of thier own to deal with this. Our foreFathers never guessed that our military would be what it is. So each state should be given a force just to deal with a runaway gov.

I live with 20 miles of Ft. Knox and I have met and associated with Americas best and brightest Military personnel who have served and I have also met the "Not So best and brightest". Then I laugh and think to myself, If the military actually performed an IQ test with a basic minimum requirement for a person to join... Americas Military would be a lot smaller is size.... Spc. Meyer is proof of it...

they are worrying about civilians with loaded weapons and this guy was in the military. He was suppose to be trained in how to use a firearm and he ends up pointing a weapon in the guy's face.It does not matter to 'assume' a weapon is unloaded or with 'dummies' and never point it at another person unless you are in fear for your life. The Govt. should be more worried about the safety of weapons with their own men they train then most ordinary ppl who know how to use them.

Too often these horrid situations result in the shooters saying, "I did not know the gun was loaded!" or in this case, "I thought it was loaded with blanks!" Soldiers should know better firearm safety than that. Treat every gun as if it is loaded (and not with blanks but with the most deadly bullet or ammunition it can hold). Of course, b both were likely drunk. This reduces good sense and reasoning quite a bit. This is another case in point in which the gun did not kill, but the stupid drunk and irresponsible friend killed his friend.

SO,, when might we expect to see a conviction of that Army POS in Texas? For that matter when can we expect to see the trial started. If you still hung up on the shaving thing I have BroadSshoulders and a sharp K-Bar I would gladly bear the criticism of violating his rights to grow a beard while in the service of his country so that justice could be done.
