10-14 rounds fired into van on Chicago highway, killing woman

An aerial view of the scene in Chicago where a woman driving a van was shot dead.

A Chicago woman was shot and killed Friday morning while driving her van on the ramp from Lake Shore Drive to Interstate 55.

Illinois State Police said a 32-year-old woman and a 37-year-old female passenger were driving a white Dodge van south on Lake Shore Drive around 4:20 a.m. when the shooting occurred.

A brown, full-size van pulled alongside them as they entered the ramp to I-55 and someone opened fire with 10 to 14 rounds, shooting the driver, police said. The woman's van then crashed into the median. She was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The other woman was not injured and was taken into police custody for questioning. She is not considered a suspect.

Police said the shooting was related to gang and drug activity and was not random.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Police are still looking for the shooter, and the shooting remains under investigation.

Crack down on gangs and the violence they bring about this nation. We have a right to guns. It is protected under the constitution whether you like it or not.

The media is going to perpetuate these stories to artificially polarize the debate - just to get people riled up. Their agenda is so blatantly obvious at this point, I'm completely desensitized to the whole thing. It's ridiculous that their sole purpose is to antagonize and inflame the public. Sadly, it's working.

Using their logic, why isn't every stabbing and hit-and-run sensationalized into national news?

This isn't news anymore, just fuel that the MSM keeps throwing on to the debate. The more they force stories like this on the public, the more lunatics they will coax out of the woodwork. But hey, it's all about those ratings, right?

THINK, people.

This stuff happens almost every day in Chicago but we NEVER hear about it. Why now? Most likely because it was 10-14 shots...... Someone had a "magazine" in their gun, so it get's printed. If they'd have killed her with a handgun (like the other people who were likely shot in Chicago last night) it's simply not news.

As a fellow U.S. citizen I am asking for your help. As a father and someone who would be devastated if my child or children in my community were killed needlessly, as so many others have been recently, I am asking for your help.

I am doing this because our leaders in Washington D.C. are failing to do what needs to be done, they are failing us. They spend all of their time in campaign mode. Trying to figure out how they can use every issue to their advantage and using every issue to keep the People divided. Using every issue to try and paint the other side as the bad guys to gain a political advantage.

Gun violence is not a Left issue and it is not a Right issue, it is all Peoples issues. Our communities are being devastated with gun violence, Mass shootings, Hostage situations etc. and all they do in Washington is worry about what Legislation they can get passed and how it will affect their party.

Our leaders are not leading.

We do not need Congress to act to make a difference on gun violence. We the People can act now and make a difference.

That is why I am asking for your Help.

If it saves just one life it’s worth it.

What I don’t understand is why Obama will go out on national television and call for everyone to act, to be on his side to pass Gun Control legislation, but he doesn’t go on national television to address the nation and ask for the peoples help to end gun Violence. Why won’t he come out and say to the nation that no matter what Congress passes it doesn’t work if the States and the people don’t help to make the country a safer place.

Isn’t this supposed to be a nation that was created by the people, of the People by the People and for the people, and our politicians serve us not the other way around?

Why doesn’t Obama go on national T.V. and say;

We will look at what we can do to strengthen our gun laws to make sure guns are not ending up in the hands of criminals and the mentally ill but you do not have to wait to act. You have the power to reduce gun accidents and gun crime by acting now to learn proper gun safety and storage. We could be doing things now like instituting the Eddie Eagle Program to teach k-4th Graders simple gun Safety;

If you see a gun:
STOP!
Don't Touch.
Leave the Area.
Tell an Adult.

You could be going online and finding out the best way to secure your firearms for what makes sense for your situation.

We could be requiring conflict resolution teaching in school to teach our children how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. Isn’t that supposed to be part of the Safe Schools initiative so kids can feel safe at school and not bullied, etc?

You could be calling on your States and legislatures to Comply with the NICS system and report convicted criminals, people deemed mentally unstable, report people convicted of drug violations, etc.

If you are the victim of a robbery and your guns are stolen report them to the Police so that Law enforcement will know there out there and you are no longer liable if that gun is used in a crime.

There are many, many things that as Citizens of the United States you could be doing now to help curb gun violence in the U.S..

You don’t need to wait for Congress to act or an Executive Order for something to be done.

This country is found on the Principle that the people are intelligent and capable of determining for themselves how our government should work and what our laws should be. This country works when people are involved and taking responsibility for it. Ask yourself are you doing what you can to prevent gun violence or are you just waiting for the government to do something about it?

Here’s a website (website name) with information on what you can be doing now. It covers proper gun safety, safety rules you can teach your children when they see a gun, how to properly store weapons when they are not in use, etc.

Why is it that ending gun violence is only a Legislative issue and what matters is what they can get passed and turned into law and not about citizens themselves taking a role in our society?

There are millions of legal gun owners and groups that would be more than happy to help make the country safer and help reduce gun violence. Lawful gun owners do not want guns in the hands of criminals and don’t like gun violence anymore than you do. They do not like seeing children killed by guns any more than you do.

Instead of attacking lawful gun ownership, trying to limit all of our rights and making Legal gun owners the scapegoats every time a psychopath with a gun kills a child, why aren’t you asking law abiding gun owners for help?

Bruce, semi-auto handguns all have "magazines" and many hold 10-14 rounds. It is more likely than not that the shooter had a handgun.

That being said, I also have to wonder why this is news. This is just a day in Chicago.

Actually Chicago does NOT have the toughest gun laws in the country. New York does. In New York if you are found possessing an unregistered gun, you are automatically sent to jail. In Chicago, unless you used that gun in the commission of a crime, you are not.

Ultimately though it doesn't matter. Gun owners claim if we just made tougher laws to deal with gun crime that will solve the problem. Then what? We bankrupt the nation paying to feed and house all these criminals? Maybe we should tax gun owners and sellers to death to pay for it all. If you continue to want your toys at the expense of the consequences, you should be willing to pay for the luxury.

That would greatly diminish the problem.

Actually all guns have magazines. This could've still been a handgun. A Glock 22 (.40 cal) holds 15 rounds in the standard capacity magazine.

MK,

Not all guns have magazines. Revolvers have a cylinder. Shot-guns come in Single shot, double barrel, pump's have a feeder tube (could technically be called a magazine), bolt action rifles usually only have one round capacity, many sniper rifles are bolt action single capacity.

Yep, FLUSH out those crossing our borders carrying weapons and drugs, those criminals who break into law abiding citizens homes and steal their "LEGAL" guns, and those "someone" who sells guns on the streets for drug money.

Better idea: put out a police flyer to "talk with the gun runners and ILLEGAL gun owners" just like this administration wants to "talk to the terrorists". That will cure the problem. Remember, "Government Motors is alive, Osama bin Laden is dead, and al Qaeda is decimated".

Guess you had better stick to R.I. politics or continue the fight to ban Christmas trees.

Chicago has a lot of crime because Chicago has a lot of VIOLENT people. Yes guns are a problem, but the bigger problem is that we now live in a culture that glorifies violence and de-values human life. Don't think we glorify violence? Look around at what's popular. The movies, the music, the video games. We have become a people so desensitized to violence that it has become a part of us and our fabric like never before. The answers are complex and there aren't easy answers. Banning certain types of weapons or magazines won't help. The bad guys will still have them, and if they don't, they will simply use something else.

America is in a death spiral in so many ways... Decades of moral decay are taking their toll...

      @ Marie

Yes, lets tax the hell out of law abiding gun owners & gun stores for the acts of violent criminals.

That will teach those damn criminals to change their ways & stop them from being violent & evil. I think they're shaking in their boots right now just at the thought of law abiding citizens paying all of those extra taxes. I'm sure it will also cause them to turn in all of their guns & then they'll all hold hands & sing kumbaya.

But at the same time if people want to continue to have their vices/conveniences at the expense of the consequences, they should be willing to pay for the luxury. So we should also:

      1. Tax the hell out of all people who drink alcohol, all bars, & all stores that sell alcohol.

They should be held accountable for all of the people drunk drivers kill & for all of the people who die from alcohol poisoning.

      2. Tax the hell out of people who smoke (even more than currently), cigarette manufacturers, & all stores that sell cigarettes.

They should be held responsible for all the people who develop lung cancer from smoking & for the people who die from diseases caused by 2nd hand smoke.

      3. Tax the hell out of car manufacturers, dealerships, & everyone who drives a car.

They should be held responsible for the people who get killed in car wrecks caused by reckless/distracted drivers.

In fact, lets tax everyone every time someone else does something wrong or harms another person.

I think we should also start taxing people for breathing. After all, people exhale CO2 & CO2 is a leading contributor to global warming.

All of this tax money from breathing should go to Al Gore since he will put it to good use. Al Gore deserves this money because he cares so much & he is just trying to save the planet. I really admire him. He is a genius & he also invented the internet!

I really like your idea Marie. When will those stupid conservatives figure out that the answer to all of the worlds problems is to just raise taxes.

I'm humbled to be in your presence of your brilliance. Then again I'm just a stupid, inbred, uneducated, toothless, redneck, hillbilly, right wing, gun owning nut job, who is a coward afraid of their own shadow, so what do I know.

      Hey Jessica,

If the media is so infatuated with guns, then they should report on all the instances where guns are used to thwart crimes. But they wont. Many times no-one dies, the bad guy is stopped by a lawful gun owner, and that is totally against their Communist views. Just like the school shooting yesterday. Once they learned an Armed Officer stopped the shooting and apprehended the suspect the story magically disappeared from the national news organizations. This is exactly what Wayne Lapierre said our schools needed. Yet, the girl shot and killed in Chicago that performed at the swearing in ceremony has been headlines for the past three days.

All the WHINING... ALL THE PROTESTING...ALL the HYPERNOLE from some gun-owners.... Really ?

So what is your solution? Ban all guns? Let's see, about 90 years ago we banned Cocaine and 60 Years ago we banned pot; both of those have worked really well. Is your idea that because 3 Billion wild birds are killed in the US every year that we should ban Cats? Why not, since 30,000 people are killed in auto crashes each year, why don't we just ban cars and everyone walks wherever they go?

A couple of nights ago, while watching the evening news, I had to turn it off before my blood pressure was measurable on the Richter Scale. There was a story about a woman who had just buried the last of her 4 children. Each had been killed in Chicago because of "Gun Violence" and, according to her (just like your statements), it was "all the fault of the guns". The Guns were the sole cause of the death of her children. Yet, when you dig a little deeper into the story, you find out that 3 of her 4 children had been members of gangs, sold drugs, and been to prison. The girl had been a prostitute. All 4 children had been born to different absentee fathers, and raised by the streets, but it was "all the Gun's fault" that they were now dead.

If they had been raised a little differently, taught right from wrong and good from bad (as Mayor Emanuel echoed in the interview) perhaps they would all be alive today. But, according to their mother, it wasn't her fault, it was all the fault of the gun. She did nothing wrong.

Perhaps if parents started parenting and teaching their kids right from wrong and good from bad, rather than letting the Streets, Malls, Gangs, and Video games raise them, there would be a little less of this. But NO, we can't have any accountability or responsibility in this world; that might step on someone's precious little self esteem and ego. After all, one of the major points in the liberal mantra; 'no one is to blame because everyone is to blame". responsibility and accountability are topics foreign to you .

No accountability, no responsibility, no one is at fault. It makes my blood boil!

More and more, I feel that we're living in a war zone in this country. With the on-going chaos represented by gangs and drug related violence combined with ready access to firearms we are degenerating into a 3rd world society. We need to make possesion of a non-registered firearm a crime. And, we need to decriminalize drug use to reduce the high dollar stakes that drive a lot of violence in this country.

        #1.48 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 1:53 PM EST

Yes, New York has the strongest HANDGUN laws. If a person is caught in public with an unlicensed to carry handgun they are going to jail and MEGA LEGAL EXPENSE. However, Many Many New Yorkers have handguns at home for personal protection ILLEGALLY and the State Does Not try to go after them. BUT that is New York where there are NOT Chicago Style gangs of sub humans shooting off their illegally gotten handguns to get their Bang out of their buck by shooting at ANY Target. You can take the monkey out of the jungle BUT you cannot take the jungle out of the monkey.

Ban All Guns in America just like prohibition???? Use your imagination.

        Locke1632,

I agree. We should decriminalize "some" drugs. I'm not a drug user. Just a person with a brain, which seems to be lacking in politics. I don't agree with registration of all guns. We need to enforce the laws that are already on the books. It's illegal for anyone that uses drugs or illegally uses prescription drugs from buying a weapon. It's illegal to point a gun at someone if it is not in self-defense. It's illegal to purchase a firearm for someone you know is not legally allowed to have one. It is illegal to possess a handgun under the age of 21. It is illegal to shoot people outside of self-defense. Yet, many times these criminals get less than a year in jail, and are back out on the street to do more crime. We should punish the criminals harshly.

-20 years mandatory, no parole, no plea deals, regardless of age for the possession of a firearm during a crime

-30 years mandatory, no parole, no plea deals, regardless of age if a firearm is brandished during a crime

-Mandatory life, no parole, no plea deals, regardless of age if a firearm is discharged during a crime with the option of the death penalty if the shooting results in fatalities.

I'm sure some lib will say this is unfair, but what's unfair is the majority of us gun owners being treated like criminals because we choose to practice a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. Just like Obama and his sheeple vilify the wealthy like they are criminals and don't deserve the money they make.

        Hey RI MOM,

How are you going to get criminals that sell guns on the street to submit to universal background checks? How are you going to get them to go through an FFL dealer? How are you going to ensure that every single gun that is sold goes is subjected to a background check? How is that going to happen when our govt can't even keep track of weapons they are suppose to be tracking?

Because in the liberal progressive world, government is the answer, not the people.

Exactly. To them, more government is the answer even if they haven't heard the question. They remind me of C.S. Lewis's description of the "Omnipotent Moral Busybody" which they tend to be:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may, in fact, be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. Their very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domesticated animals.

        RI MOM,

How'd you like the school shooter yesterday being stopped and subdued by an armed guard? Just like Wayne Lapierre said we should have in every school. Notice how fast all the Liberal News sites stopped reporting on that story when that fact came out?

You can't even answer my question besides vague "there are ways". There is no way to ensure that every single gun sold the buyer is subjected to a background check. There are already 306,000,000 guns in this country and there is absolutely no way to know if one is sold and subjected to a background check. Our govt can't even protect our borders from being infiltrated by illegals. Our govt doesn't even enforce many of the alreay 30,000 gun laws we have on the books. Our govt has said they won't enforce immigration laws and deportations. Most of the guns that end up in the hands of criminals are done through straw purchases which is already illegal. It's already illegal for someone to buy a gun with criminal intent. It's already illegal for someone with a mental illness to buy a gun. It's already illegal for someone that used illegal drugs or illegally uses prescription drug to buy a gun. Yes, it is even illegal for someone that uses marijuana to buy a gun. Yet, most of those aren't enforced. How about the people that have been denied the purchase of a firearm because they didn't pass the background check? They are supposed to be charged with a felony and imprisoned, yet only a handful have even been charged.

        H(D)opeyChangyFeely,

You pathetically miss the point. YOU are the one who perpetuates these stories and it is YOU who is artificially polarizing the debate. Every time one of these stories comes out, you could ignore it, like most of the rational people do. But do you? No. You bitch and moan about how unfair it is for MSNBC to put these stories out. And then you make some snarky remark about "we should ban swingsets because more kids die on those than are killed by handguns!"

I hit my thumb with a hammer once. I really didn't like it, so I stopped doing it. You hate MSNBC so much, and you're obviously going to gripe about any article they put out. So my question is, WHY DO YOU KEEP COMING BACK HERE? Go to Limbaugh's site or FOX News. There, you will be awash in all of your Neo-Nazi, dark skin hating, fascist, gun-toting glory! Enjoy it. Neither one of those sites allows free and unfettered discussion from the readers. Hmm... Freedom... Does not equal FOX.

I guess we also need to tax cellphones and all cellphone providers because I can't even tell you how many times I've almost been hit by someone texting or talking on their phone while driving. The truth is, I'm far more afraid of being killed by a texting driver than I am of being killed by a gun. I can avoid people and situations that would make me more likely to get shot (like drugs, gangs, etc), but I can't avoid all the idiots on the road unless I confine myself to my house.

My brain isn't wired for that kind of nonsensical off-topic mentally questionable, argument that you proposed.

Oh, Really? But that is the typical liberal response to anything that they even perceive to be a threat; BAN IT. "If we Ban It, it will magically go away." As I said earlier, We Ban Cocaine about 80 Years ago and Pot and LSD, about 60 Years ago; that has worked really well, hasn't it? But Banning anything will magically make the Bogey Man go away, won't it?

Any issue that I have with your whines are no different than those of any other progressive / ultra-liberal/ Futurist. you see, your faction sees a social problem (either real or perceived) and immediately feel that they cannot go to sleep at night without doing something to fix it in a way that they deem to be correct. They do not ask anyone if the problem is real or imaginary. They do not consult someone else (non liberal) if there might be a better way or if this intrusion into the social arena is necessary. They attack the problem as if the world will stop turning and the planetary axis will tilt 60 degrees if they do not address this issue this very minute.

Your faction consider yourself the only ones with any answers. Did some Deity (Allah, Buddha, God, Shiva, Yahweh, or the Great Pumpkin) define YOU to be the sole repository for all Morality in this dimension? Did the Great Pumpkin place it's vine on your shoulder and declare YOU to be in charge of all that is good and right in the world? I must have missed the Memo.

If someone disagrees with faction's solution or even if a solution to a non existent problem is needed, then they are heckled as being greedy, Evil, Mean, stupid, rednecks, or some throwback to the Neanderthal branch of human evolution. Who anointed You with this level of wisdom where all that disagree are stupid. Are you a direct genetic descendant of Adam Weishaupt and the Bavarian Illuminati or just some self proclaimed Epicurean Intelligentsia?

It isn't that you don't have some good ideas or that there isn't a need for your ideas, but that most liberals and all Progressives/futurist/ ultra-liberals consider themselves to be the ONLY ones with good ideas and everyone else is a cross-eyed, drooling, knuckle dragging moron that just fell off of the turnip truck this morning. This is why the term "Liberal" as become a pejorative to so many people like me.

You don't even come close to bothering me; I served with the 3rd Marines in Quang Tri and Thau Thien Provinces of Vietnam. It will take a lot more than you have to offer to worry me in the least, Kid.

Gee folks, let's keep cranking out those assault rifles so this keeps going on. No matter how well you lock them up, they are going to wind up in the wrong hands. I am not against rifles to defend yourself, just assault rifles with their 50 round magazine. Next they will design one that shoots even faster and with a 100 round magazine. That way people can cut you in two with one in a matter of seconds. Hey, maybe we should sell RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) for people to defend themselves. Oh and don't let out tanks for people to drive to work so they will be safe. After this killing, the second amendment nut-jobs will want that also.

Because gun control is an issue that is strogly opposed by those right leaning, fox news watching rural white people that insist on "hanging onto their guns", calling out gun violence would mean calling out inner city black thugs. Loyal to the end, which in this case usually ends up in another black teenager being killed.

You can't rely on the public school systems to teach morals or citizenship. Ban any thing you like and when the next mass murder takes place, we can ban some other inanimate object. Even the un armed people in Mexico found weapons and are beginning to stand up to the dope dealers. If the cops and politicians can't or won't go after the thugs, maybe we the people will have too.

Calling it "gun violence" puts the emphasis in the wrong place. It is VIOLENCE committed by criminals who happened to use a gun. Violent people tend to use guns because guns make them as fast and strong as anyone. People resisting violence also use guns, for the same reason. Guns are equalizers, they allow the weak to stand up to the strong. The problem isn't with the tool, it is with the intent of some of the people wielding the tool.

Try enforcing the laws that are already on the books. The administration claims that the NICS system has stopped millions of illegal gun purchases. Yet no one is prosecuted for attempting to buy a gun illegally. WIll expansion of the NICS to private transfers accomplish anything?

I don't think nearly as many gun owners would object to checks on private purchases if we could trust the government to destroy the record of the transaction like they are supposed to. However, they've come up with bogus reasons not to follow the law themselves and are retaining data for long periods of time. It amounts to back door registration.

Actually RICO statutes can ban assembly for the purpose of criminal enterprise. If the govrnment really wanted to stop gang violence they could do so.

I propose re-purposing the "war on drugs" to the "war on gangs." The infrastructure and personnel are already in place.

If the laws that we already have regarding guns something like 12000 laws, then there would be a lot less problems. the problem is they do not have the man power to do all of the checks so they pencil wip them and just go by the answers the purchaser puts down... the FBI and police departments do not properely staff the sections that do the checks so they do not do them right... that is a big part of the problem.

Remember that most of the citizens in Chicago aren't armed because of the Unconstitutional Ban they had in place for years.

Sorry to tell you this but the west wasn't all that wild. After the Civil War and enough troops engaged in killing the holdouts and the bison decimated, from what I have read it was pretty tame.

And Just how many homicides took place during the "Wild West"? Was there a murder a day in Dodge? or in Tombstone?

Chime in all who think they know the answer.

Yep, those were shoot 'em up days for sure. And just about every body had a gun. How many people did Billy the Kid kill?

And to be sure, the death rates for the time, and the populations involved were horrific, but I think the actual numbers will surprise you.

If people reported when they sell or "lose" a gun to theft, it might just help keep the guns out of the hands of criminals.

Well, according to the Washington Post, (not Obama) fewer than 20% of gun sales are through "private" sales. And every gun owner I know will report a stolen gun, if nothing else for insurance purposes. Now what the police do with that information, is anybody's guess, one would hope they enter the serial numbers of the guns into a database for the purpose of retrieving stolen goods, like most other things.

And as I said, according to the Washington Post, 14 to 20% of guns are "transferred" through private transactions. How many of those are among family members, i.e. father to son, uncle to nephew, brother to brother, (or female relation, let's not be sexist about it) or even among friends, is anyone's guess. But it is a common enough practice, to make it a large portion of that statistic. I would also venture a guess that a large number of guns are sold privately among strangers, and I have done so on a few occasions, but my guess is, as was my experience, that most gun owners won't sell to someone who is showing signs of a propensity to do harm. So, how many guns are true straw purchases? Or purchases made by those who shouldn't have guns? It actually seems like a small number to me, but I am no expert.

This is why I am flummoxed by the liberals, who seem hell bent on action, when in the past they usually call for some Governmental Research into the problem first. Everyone is throwing out all these numbers, the murder rate is lower here, it is higher there, gun control works, no it doesn't.

How about we study the problem? find out how many guns are stolen and used in crimes, and how to prevent that theft or how to track it better. find out where the gangs are getting the guns they use. My guess is that is the real problem, they are getting them through straw purchases, using new gang members who pass the NICS screening. So what good does new laws do? unless you address the gangs?

Rich - I think the media is doing so because these stories get a lot of hits, mostly by people like yourself and others who think there's some lamestream media conspiracy to promote Obama's agenda.

and you're all too stupid to connect the real dots - the media is owned and operated by Rupert Murdoch, I doubt he's a slave to Obama - so whats the more likely answer?

RATINGS - and you guys on the pro-gun side who think all these articles are furthering some agenda you dont agree with, are clearly too stupid to stop reading them...allowing the ratings to plummet, and allowing the media outlets to conclude "eh, no one cares about this topic anymore...onto the next hot topic".

                                YOU are keeping this alive...congrats!

Rich#5, they're just prepping their battlefield. Many years ago as a kid I had a paper route and naturally scanned the front page every day. Three to five times a week there was an item of a woman that died or was hospitalized from what was termed a back-alley abortion. I always wondered why an incident like that in New York would make the front page in Los Angeles. After many months, along came Roe v Wade. They primed the public, the public demanded it, and SCOTUS progressed. After that, not a word anywhere in the LA papers on back alley incidents. The same thing is happening on the gun issue.

I fully agree that there should be more cops on the streets in Chicago. My question is, how much more in taxes are the citizens of Chicago willing to pay to do this? Everyone yells about their taxes being too high already. The last I saw, police officers don't work for nothing. Time to quit sqawking about paying for city services and pony up. And no I don't like high taxes any more than anyone else does but I do realize that safety comes at a price.

Why should legal gun owners pay for increased enforcement when it is the gangbangers and those who choose to obtain weapons illegally and use them illegally? Is it my fault as a gun owner that some gangbanging kid deciedes to steal a gun or buy a stolen gun and kill a rival gang member? No, it's not. It is the perpatrators fault. It's the gang's fault. It's the break down of society in general that teaches these kids that violence and a life of crime is acceptable. That living in the projects and killing each other is their only option. I think a senator had the right idea the other day. Make govt benefits contingent upon good grades of the children in each family that receives those benefits. There should also be standards in place for people that don't have kids. It will teach them SOMETHING other than give me give me give me, and gang violence.

We're not the ones running around killing everyone Marie. You're still thinking like the politicians who got Chicago in this mess. Banning guns and taxing the hell out of law abiding citizens does nothing to curb the gun crime. Or any crime for that matter. But if you must do it, lets keep it fair. Everyone who uses a city park, bike path, jogging path, or any other public facility must now pay a fee or much higher fee to cover the security now being provided. I'm guessing it wouldn't take long for people like you to come to your senses after paying through the nose for something you see as a right and privilege and realize it's time to take the trash out!

Principally sponsored by Representative Randy Forbes, a Republican from Virginia, with a number of co-sponsors, the Gangbuster Bill would have allowed teenage gang members to be tried as adults and have increased the mandatory minimum sentence to ten years for some violent gang-related crimes. The bill passed the House of Representatives 279-144 with mostly Republican support. The bill was widely supported by a number of national law-enforcement organizations, such as the Fraternal Order of Police, the National Association of Police Organizations, and the National Sheriffs' Association. The legislation failed to pass the Senate, in part due to opposition from some African-American and Hispanic-American organizations, such as the National Council of La Raza.

It is not their fault, it is the white guys fault, always is. They have been blaming the white guy for so much for so long that they do not have any idea how to fix anything.

Marie, I will keep my guns, and you can keep your abortions. Mine is addressed in the 2nd amendment, yours was interpretted from the right to privacy. Until this year it was never supported by a majority of americans. We have a horrific shooting and a month later a bunch of politicians who were too cowardly to speak about gun control during the 2012 elections want to pass laws restricting our rights, so quickly that they hope everyone forgets before the next election.

                                      We will not forget.

                                      @ Marie

Maybe we should tax gun owners and sellers to death to pay for it all. If you continue to want your toys at the expense of the consequences, you should be willing to pay for the luxury.

I posted the following in response to you under your first post but obviously you missed it.

I completely agree with you.

I really like your idea Marie. When will those stupid conservatives figure out that the answer to all of the worlds problems is to just raise taxes.

I'm humbled to be in the presence of your brilliance.

Then again I'm just a stupid, inbred, uneducated, toothless, redneck, hillbilly, right wing, gun owning nut job, who is a coward afraid of their own shadow, so what do I know.

Gun deaths in Japan : practically zero, yep, that's "0" for the whole frikin country.

You are correct about Japan, Alan3008. It is also the most homogenous society in the world, and has the highest suicide rate in the world. And, they have had the same restrictions on swords, since the 17th century, as they now have on both guns and swords. (Didn't stop that little Pearl Harbor or War in the Pacific thing.)

                                        We are not Japan.

alan3008... A little reminder to you that there are not a variety of ethnic groups in Japan, just Japanese and Japanese culture. I would agree with your logical extrapolation, that if the population of Chicago was 99% Japanese, there would be far less in the way of hand gun homicides. Gun violence is part of the culture of Chicago youth and gangs, and it's the culture of Chicago, politics, economics, gang violence and all that needs to be scrutinized. How does the gang violence in Chicago link to Detroit or other Great Lakes Cities, via the highway system? How many gangs in Chicago have links to gangs outside of Chicago for their arms supply. How much corruption is in Chicago that allows passage of drugs, or guns? How are these corruption links to other cities around the Great Lakes related to those other city's gun violence rates? Seems to me, by identifying gangs, and marking their locations both locally and regionally on a map with colored pins, you could figure out the main routes illegal guns are getting into the city. Personally, I think the Chicago police force should be out on the street walking up to every person who is 30 or under, and saying hello. Especially those in alleys and stairwells in public housing districts, from 2:30 PM until 2:30 AM. Day in, day out. If they have a gun in their possession, you take away both the gun and their winter coat, and don't take them to jail. Just sit them right down there on the street corner until you get a whole flock that you can transport by bus. If it takes two days to get a flock of them, well it takes two days to get a flock of them. I think what both the gangs and the non gang public needs to see is the effectiveness of the police in capturing gang members. Cut their clothing with a razor knife to mark them as "captured", and smash their gun with a sledge hammer to rule it ineffective. Let the courts decide if cutting the sleeve off a winter coat to mark a criminal is outlandish behavior, as he sits on the corner awaiting a bus full, all with a winter coat sleeve missing. Police, on the other hand, could have a pile of winter coat sleeves and smashed guns in a pile as a show off their days work. Coat sleeves with gang colors get extra points. Besides, when they get their mug shot taken in a sleeveless jacket, they show their tattoos. Other police departments reviewing mug shots could identify that a person in a mug shot with a one sleeved jacket, was previously apprehended as a street thug with a gun in their possession. Since having a gun in their possession is the crime which they are being apprehended for, not what type of gun, nor how it was acquired, a heavy fine could be levied, such as $2000 a weapon, and if they countersued for the cost of the coat damages, the price of the coat would be subtracted from the $2000 fine. If the gang members were wearing coats in excess of the $2000 minimum fine, then they get prosecuted for racketeering, and other crimes of higher order. The burden of proof for the value of the jacket would be a sales receipt, and without that it would be assumed stolen, or something they didn't pay for legitimately. If they had a credit card, the coats purchase would show up there, or their name embroidered in it. Mostly you would end up with sleeveless hoodies, guns off the street, and quick identification of individuals who temporarily at least were apprehended for a gun violation. No coat? Cut a leg off their pants. A dress? Cut a hole in their dress. Naked? Let them sit on the street corner dressed in other cut off coat sleeves and pant legs.

Just another idea or two. Lots of complaints. Very few alternative solutions being offered up. If more laws were the answer, there wouldn't be a problem. Treat this issue like hunting waterfowl, with points for different species of duck. 10 Points for preachers, newscasters and journalists, and those holding political office. 8 points for lay clergy, teachers and social workers, and police and enforcement officers. 6 points for gun dealers and drug dealers. 5 points for prostitutes and petty thieves like shop lifters, 3 points for gun buyers, and drug buyers, and 1 point for illegal gun possession. To get a pay advancement, and tenure, the officer would have to accumulate so many points. Kids with guns would accumulate points quickly. If you busted a church however, and got a preacher, lay people, some guns and drug dealing, and selling stolen items, you'd really make a haul on points all at the same time.

Could be two or more shooters armed with 6 shot revolvers which are not "assault weapons". That way they don't leave any shell casings for forsenics tracing.

10-14 rounds = 50-70 cents in new bullet tax revenue. At this rate they will be debt free in no time.

Ban highways and Interstates. They attract vans. A law requiring only gravel roads would solve this epidemic of van violence.

The anti-gun movement keeps kicking the same dead horse and only winds up proving that they haven't any solutions to stopping violence. When Chicago's and New York's gun crime rate drops to 0% for 5 straight years, the only reason it will do so is that martial law has been imposed and civil liberties have been suspended for all citizens.

But in the state of being merely curious, what would you have in mind to limit violance due to guns? I mean something has to happen. The whole reason why gun laws dont work if because people still have access to guns.

As long as there is a gun, and it doens't matter what type of gun, someone can pull the trigger. As long as someone, and anyone, can pull the trigger someone can be shot.

As long as people have access to guns, bullets are going to be shot. If we want this to end, we need to step up. Anyone can make a difference, heck I'm only thirteen and I'm already trying to.

OR, UGAFan, maybe this is another example of why only a federal, as in nationwide, program works. When people can walk into a gun store or gun show just across a state line to get whatever they cannot in their home state, doesn't that sound a little silly to you? Or, if they simply send someone else to do it for them, doesn't that sound just as silly? How much time have you spent in Chicago? Wasn't it just yesterday a 14 year old was shot at school in what I assume is your home state of GA?

Now that you've had the chance to vent against liberals, who everybody KNOWS are behind everything bad in the country, give me a suggestion with some substance that would help with the uptick in violent killings. Or do you not think there IS a problem?

How do I know it's stolen He's 14 and by law is prohibited from owning or possessing a gun. Also, he was stopped by an ARMED Resource Officer stationed at the school.

When people can walk into a gun store or gun show just across a state line to get whatever they cannot in their home state, doesn't that sound a little silly to you? By law you can not purchase a handgun in a state that you do not reside and take it with you. If you do buy one, it must be shipped to an FFL dealer in your state. Privates sales by law can only occur between two people of that individual state. Sending someone else out to buy a gun for you is also illegal.

Just another few instances of laws that criminals don't follow.

Nationwide, there isn't an uptick in violent crimes. Violent crime is trending down a lot. Something like 3.8% in 2011 from 2010. (www.fbi.gov) This whole thing started with a few horrible mass shootings by nut jobs who shouldn't have been able to purchase a weapon of any kind.

To answer a few questions I see floating about. So Chicagos people do not want to pay more in taxes to amp up the police force. I get it. Most of chicago is on assistance of some sort. We do have the National Guard that could be sent in to increase the good guys foot print within the city. Yea, it takes some serious paperwork and the jurismydiction crap would need to be negotiated but when you consider nearly 2 people are being killed daily I think it would be worth the effort. Problem is, once the roaches are discovered they tend to flee to the next dung hole they can find. Gun rights are part of our constitution. Our fore fathers saw something most of you anti gun people dont. If I am a country wanting to invade america I would not only have to figure a way to deal with the countries army Id also have to be very cautious of every single individual as they are also armed. We essentially have a 200 million + sized army. Thats some serious firepower. I am all for tightening up on background checks and mental health checks before your able to purchase a weapon. Im even in favor of biometric triggers being standard issue if they can work out the chinks. I am also in favor of putting those illegally carrying weapons and other hardened criminals into labor camps where the work they do pays for the facility they are in. It is obvious that Chicagos gangs have absolutly no fear of the police given the manner in which they attack. It would probably take all of three days to secure the entire city if the NG was deployed. I digress though because it wont happen. Everyone will go into an uproar because the NG will need to search their homes as the bad guys dont put up signs on their doors saying (cache of illegal weapons here, 300 kilos of smack here). Never understood why that is a problem for so many people. I have nothing to hide they can check my place out anytime they want and ill even move the beds and sofas for them. If you have a problem with the police checking your home your either A: hiding something illegal, which means you are part of the problem or B: afraid they are going to plant something on you. which leads to C: your one of those nut jobs that thinks the gov is out to get you with alien brainwave beams. If you really wanted the violence to be gone you would open all your doors and let the cops come and go where they please. Pretty sure theyd even turn a blind eye to the bag o weed in the dresser. If criminals know they have no where to hide they flee to where they can hide. If there is nowhere to hide they all join together and form criminal land which is a far cry easier to target than having them spread all over the place.

Most people don't have anything to hide either but they value their personal privacy & don't want to live in a police state or under martial law. I can't understand why you don't understand people's right to privacy.

Im not saying to make it a permanent thing. But Id be all for letting it go on for a month or so if it meant that in the end my city/town/neighborhood would be safe once again. Since you brought it up though.....you defend your right to privacy, what about the right to bear arms? it is a right as well. Sometimes one must sacrifice to make great strides.

Me too. Too many parents having kids they can not afford or want to bother actually raising. While there are some kids who turn out good even in bad circumstances, these are exceptions. Most kids require someone to teach them right from wrong to grow up doing the right thing in their lives.

But as soon as someone mentions mandatory birth control for those living on government "assistance" the charges of racism get thrown out there, even though there are more whites living on welfare than all other demographics.

If you agree that is root of the problem then why are you proposing to tax law abiding gun owners & gun stores which wouldn't do anything to fix the problem?

Maybe we should tax gun owners and sellers to death to pay for it all. If you continue to want your toys at the expense of the consequences, you should be willing to pay for the luxury.

I know that sounds extreme but these people need to be killed if they are going to do drugs and shoot folks...especially innocent children as they did the other day. I know it is difficult to fight but time for silly comments on here about banning vans is disgusting. Curfews, the whole nine yards. Time to start fighting the enemy in our own country...worse than any terrorist attack. I realize we will not get rid of drugs etc but right now it is pretty much the wild west and so need to bring in military to start controlling these armed thugs.

The big issue for me is not the guns, knives (or vans, LOL), it's the amount of violence period that is being done around the US. Chicago, Texas, Detroit....why should innocent people have to live thru this and have their lives forfeit. There are other things that need to be looked at, mental health, gangs etc. What is the true underlying current to all this violence? Lack of Education? Mental Illness? Family support? I don't like guns but if you take them away there are other ways to kill as well too many to mention, this is a bigger issue and as a society it needs to be addressed.

The problem is most likely due to parents having the freedom to raise their kids they way they want and doing a really bad job of it. Kids have no support system to fall back on because schools are overwhelmed and financially strapped so less teachers and counselors to help while churches are too busy perpetuating themselves to teach love and compassion and provide guidance. Too many kids falling through the cracks and growing up without any sense of morality to guide them in making the right decisions. The result is a growing number of juvenile delinquents. People mostly don't care because they think it is mostly the poor, but that isn't true. Wealthy families can do just as poor a job of raising decent kids as well.

I figure by the end of the day this story will need to be re written though to say 1000 of rounds were fired and an AR15 was used!!!! There is just not enough about them scary so called assault weapons in this story. YET!!! give MSNBC some time and they will come back with more....

I was reading one of their other stories today about the Conn. shooting and one women was saying how there were just hundreds and hundreds of rounds being fired so fast and it just never stopped!!!! I would really like to see the video of that shooting and all of the rounds that were fired because it just keeps getting worse sand worse every single day!!!!!!!!!!! I figure maybe 40-50 rounds were fired if that and now it is hundreds and hundreds...

I guess it is like the NM shooting where the AR15 and a bunch of guns were laying around the victims but later on in the story the writer said that the kid had loaded all of the guns up in the car and was going to a church.... Still haven't figured out how those guns were in two places at one time but, hey this is the MSNBC propaganda news that we are talking about!!!!

Then we will have to hear about how they are not trying to take our guns away as they say ban the so called assault weapon, how can they ban it but not take it away? and if you look at the idiot fuksteins list she wants to ban like 160 some odd firearms but "We are not trying to take your guns away" I guess they think we are as ignorant as their usefulidiots that fall for their lies!!!

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country but gang members don't exactly register their weapons. The mayor has been more concerned about putting more bike lanes in the streets than he is cops.

He has just announced that he will be putting 200 more cops in the streets to combat crime. He may be getting the point.

The problem is that whenever cops become pro-active in fighting crime the community cries civil rights violations and the cops back off and the people start dying again.

In Chicago, there have been 446 school age children shot in leftist utopia run by Rahm Emanuel and that produced Obama, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, etc. 62 school aged children have actually been killed by crazed nuts in Chicago so far this year. So why isn't this news worthy? Is it because it would embarrass those anti second amendment nuts who brag about Chicago's tough gun laws? Is it because most of the kids who were shot and killed were minorities? Or is it because the corrupt media doesn't want to show Chicago in a bad light?

That rat infested city just needs to call in an exterminator to clean out its sewers so the law abiding citizens can live in peace. If they do it right it would be over in a couple of days....

They need to bring back the good ole curfew and remember how the news used to say "It is ten oclock parents, Do you know where your kids are"?

They need to do something to go after them criminals, but NO, they will only go after the law abiding citizens.... It is easier to go after those who abide by the law than those who break the law!!!! Less mess.

I had read that 80% of those killed in Chicago in 2010 had criminal records, this seems like 90% of those killed in 2012 were 18 years of age or under, many may still have had criminal records if they were actually gang members.

Easier to show their ignorance and rant about the POTUS and the anti-gun folks who really just want reasonable curtailment like background checks, mental checks and a ban on assault-type weapons.

It's been said a thousand times, but the 2nd Amendment is to protect the populace from the federal Government, not from street criminals. The US armed forces are armed with assault rifles. The citizens can have them too. The colonials had muskets and cannon equal to the British army. That's one reason they won. Read some history. Get a clue.

Our government has tanks, grenade launchers, nuclear and biological weapons and the list goes on and on. Your puny guns don't stand a chance. Or do you think the Second Amendment gives you the right to own those as well?

Humans are not reliable, capable, honest, or peace-loving. To generally state that they are capable of owning weapons that kill others and it remain a right that is generally safe is beyond ridiculous.

But I'm not expecting the US government to use nuclear or biological weapons on its own territory and population no matter how crazy they get. But armed populations have resisted government tanks and grenade launchers for decades. How about Hungary in the 50's? Have you heard of a country called Syria?

I am also sorry to tell you but if our Government did go rogue as you say, I know that a very large number of those in the military would not listen so they would have to bring in foreign nations and I also know that I can use my weapon very well and it only takes one or two of us to start collecting from those foreigners we take out and before you know it we also have tanks and bombs and RPG's etc etc.... but I could not do that at all if you had your way and then all would be lost.

God I hope and pray that never happens but it is like the nuclear deterrence that we have to prevent the Russians or Chinese from attacking us, They have a rather large military but they fear us because of what we can do if they attacked us, that is what the 2nd amendment does to our government!

You need to be careful with that anti rhetoric because once one of the Bill of Rights vanishes it does not take much to get rid of the others, like the 1st, 4th, 14th etc then there will just no bill of rights and the people will no longer be citizens but servants..... Do a little reading of actual history and you will see how that works...

I'm sure if they had had your input on the nature of humans, they would have re-thought their ideas. But thanks for playing.

                                                                          #25.6 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 1:03 PM EST

Newsflash...assault rifles are already prohibited to the general public...this "assault-type weapons" BS is so subjective and is clearly a political term. An AR-15 is not an assault rifle, it is a regular semi-automatic rifle designed to LOOK like an assault rifle. And the bigger issue for you libs that just don't get it...the Constitution was designed to LIMIT THE POWER OF GOVT, NOT LIMIT THE RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS!

You guys are over looking at how brilliant Marie is. Under the first post of this article she already posted a way to fix the problem of gun violence in the U.S.

                                                                          Marie485962

Maybe we should tax gun owners and sellers to death to pay for it all. If you continue to want your toys at the expense of the consequences, you should be willing to pay for the luxury.

                                                                          • 2 votes

                                                                          King,

Rrifles already owned, already made and already imported would be exempt. Your assault rifle would go UP in value. The "ban" would only stop NEW rifles from being made or imported. The ones already here and in possession would be safe.

Now, if people truly believe that the "gummint" is going to take away your guns -and- that you'd be able to stop them... maybe that type of person shouldn't be owning guns in the first place.

What the libbies want is an intelligent conversation about how to reduce gun violence. Background checks, FTF sales only, close the loop holes etc... NONE of those procedures take away your rights or infringe on the 2nd amendment... so WHY won't you guys step up to the table?

What is needed are NATIONAL laws, so guys in Chicago city can't cross the street into a suburb and buy a gun, only to walk back into Chicago.

Finally, "Chicago, New York DC all have the toughest laws, yet highest crime". Sure, but you need to maybe reverse your statement...they have the highest crime - so as a result - enacted tougher laws. Your "cause and effect" fallacy needs some work.

                                                                            #25.9 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 3:45 PM EST

Taxing gun owners and sellers to death to pay for it will NOT get guns out of the hands of the criminals. Remember, our own government sent thousands of REAL assault weapons to the drug cartels of Mexico (but they now deny they knew they were doing it), and those real assault weapons are finding their way back to this country ILLEGALLY! Removing guns from the hands of legal gun owners only makes the job of the criminals easier. Ask Eric Holder about where all those thousands of illegal guns are.
