Second victim of Phoenix workplace shooting dies

Mark Hummels was representing Steve Singer in litigation with Arthur Douglas Harmon of Phoenix. Harmon was found dead Thursday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A prominent Arizona lawyer has become the second victim to die in this week's workplace shooting in Phoenix, his law firm said Friday.

Mark Hummels, 43, president of the Phoenix chapter of the Federal Bar Association, died Thursday night, according to the law firm, Osborn Maledon PA.

Hummels had been on life support since he was shot Wednesday following a settlement conference between his client, who was also killed, and the gunman, identified as Arthur Douglas Harmon, 70, of Phoenix.

Hummels was representing Steve Singer, 48, chief executive of Fusion Contact Centers, whom Harmon was suing. Singer died shortly after the shootings Wednesday, and Harmon was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound early Thursday in Mesa, Ariz.

A 32-year-old woman was also shot, but her injuries weren't life-threatening.

Fusion, which operates call centers for businesses, had hired Harmon to do refurbishing work at two of its centers in California. In April, Harmon sued the company for allegedly having failed to pay him in full. The company countersued, demanding that he repay what he had already been paid because the work couldn't be completed.

Documents in the lawsuit include threatening letters from Harmon to Hummels, who wanted to depose Harmon and eventually got a subpoena compelling him to testify under oath, a prospect Harmon said in an email message made him "ill."

"Stop sending your harassing and intimidating e-mails," Harmon said in one email message.

In a letter Dec. 15, Harmon told Hummels: "I will expose you for what you are, depriving me and my family of requested documents to prove my case."

The last communication from Harmon in the case threatened to pursue criminal charges against both Hummels and Singer. Harmon did file a complaint with the Arizona Bar, which dismissed it as being without merit.

Hummels began his career as a reporter for the Santa Fe New Mexican before entering the University of Arizona law school. He graduated first in his class and later was a clerk for 9th Circuit U.S. Appeals Judge Andrew Hurwitz when Hurwitz was an Arizona Supreme Court justice in 2004, NBC station KPNX of Phoenix reported.

Hurwitz called Hummels "the most decent and humble man I have ever met."

In a statement, Hummels' law firm said it was "devastated at this news about our beloved friend" and offered sympathy and support for his wife and two children.

Well surely it was that nasty gun that caused all this right? A company who failed to pay there bill, then with the help of a lawyer continued to harass a guy just trying to get paid for his labor, had absolutely no accountability here now did they libs? As you purportedly defend the little guy, how ya going to spin this one?

Enough already with your political agenda.

Harmon did file a complaint with the Arizona Bar, which dismissed it as being without merit.

DISMISSED WITHOUT MERIT... much like your comments.

Harmon shoots himself... with that "nasty gun"....after murdering two others.

All that "lib" yabbering of yours.... unnecessary, unproductive, and diminishes your credibility.

I agree IA. Of the daily average of 40 gun involved homicides and 60 injuries that take place in the US every day, they could have picked a better story to propagate the liberal agenda.

Enough already with your political agenda.

Where did i mention politics? The only agenda here is the ever present anti gun one presented by the media. and you swollow it on a daily basis.

Harmon did file a complaint with the Arizona Bar, which dismissed it as being without merit.

DISMISSED WITHOUT MERIT... much like your comments.

A group of fellow lawyers dismissed complaints against one of their own who just happened to be representing a wealthy client?

Harmon shoots himself... with that "nasty gun"....after murdering two others.

Did the gun jump up unassisted and do it?

All that "lib" yabbering of yours.... unnecessary, unproductive, and diminishes your credibility.

In your viewpoint, and those of your fellow like minded individuals devoid of fact.

You spew on and on about gun control, yet simply will not admit the FACT that the entire liberal train of thought consists of more laws, despite the simple fact that time after time they have been proven to be totally ineffective and completely useless....yet I am the one yammering?

My guess is this guy had blood in his eyes for these attorneys. (Not a misunderstand-able view from some of the interactions I have had with some attorneys over the years)

My guess is, he had it in his head he was going to kill them. Yes a gun makes it easier, maybe, but I would venture that a knife or some other method would have been brought to bear had the gun not been available. So, we take away other peoples Right to defend themselves, because this guy popped a blood vessel? Come on people let's pay attention to the details.

And who knows, maybe this guy had a legitimate beef, wouldn't be the first time the media made the wrong guy out to be the villain. (Not saying that gave him the right to shoot them, just saying we may not be getting the whole story)

Yesterday in Atlanta, an armed school security guard stopped a school shooting in progress so sometimes those pesky 2nd Amendment rights save lives.

I can't even find the link to that story on MSNBC anymore. Guess it didn't fit with their agenda.

And where is that on the front page? Or even the US & World section's front page? Nowhere.

It's not even a top 10 story on the Crime subsection of the US subsection. You have to click all the way into the Crime subsection to get it. That's pretty buried.

Also, when I searched for "Atlanta Shooting" the link to the long story was broken.

@americanfools - Of course they think their so-called "rights" are worth all those deaths. They've said so over and over again. They are ignorant, stupid and paranoid. They don't understand the government, they don't understand the constitution, and they don't really grasp the fact that they live in something called a country, not a barbeque pit outside the firing range.

Just imagine it: these guys are so profoundly stupid that they think a bunch of peckerwoods (themselves) with Glocks and AR-15's, is keeping the country free from a tyrannical government that is ready and waiting to strip them of everything. The minute they relax their vigilance - and hyper-vigilance is a sign of mental disease - the government is going to take their liberty, their babies, their girlfriends, their crystal, their wives, their extenze and and, by far the worst of all, their gunny wunnies.

Well then, I guess we can regulate the media, broadcast on all electronic formats, including the internet then can't we? because the 1st only applies to the printing PRESS. Or how about abortion? rather modern medical procedure don't you think? Or how about we tap cell phones, text messages and emails as you are only allowed to be secure in your person, houses, papers and effects?

If you want the Constitution to cover one modern invention, does it not apply to all of them?

And with a moniker like Sam Adams (or are you named for the beer) you should know where I get my second amendment rights from, and just exactly what that purpose is don't you?

As a fellow U.S. citizen I am asking for your help. As a father and someone who would be devastated if my child or children in my community were killed needlessly, as so many others have been recently, I am asking for your help.

I am doing this because our leaders in Washington D.C. are failing to do what needs to be done, they are failing us. They spend all of their time in campaign mode. Trying to figure out how they can use every issue to their advantage and using every issue to keep the People divided. Using every issue to try and paint the other side as the bad guys to gain a political advantage.

Gun violence is not a Left issue and it is not a Right issue, it is everyone’s problem. Our communities are being devastated with gun violence, Mass shootings, Hostage situations etc. and all they do in Washington is worry about what Legislation they can get passed and how it will affect their party.

                      Our leaders are not leading.

We do not need Congress to act to make a difference on gun violence. We the People can act now and make a difference.

That is why I am asking for your Help.

If it saves just one life it’s worth it.

What I don’t understand is why Obama will go out on national television and call for everyone to act, to be on his side to pass Gun Control legislation, but he doesn’t go on national television to address the nation and ask for the peoples help to end gun Violence. Why won’t he come out and say to the nation that no matter what Congress passes it doesn’t work if the States and the people don’t help to make the country a safer place.

Isn’t this supposed to be a nation that was created by the people, of the People by the People and for the people, and our politicians serve us not the other way around?

                      Why doesn’t Obama go on national T.V. and say;

                      We will look at what we can do to strengthen our gun laws to make sure guns are not ending up in the hands of criminals and the mentally ill but you do not have to wait to act. You have the power to reduce gun accidents and gun crime by acting now to learn proper gun safety and storage. We could be doing things now like instituting the Eddie Eagle Program to teach k-4th Graders simple gun Safety;

                      If you see a gun:
                      STOP!
                      Don't Touch.
                      Leave the Area.
                      Tell an Adult.

You could be going online and finding out the best way to secure your firearms for what makes sense for your situation.

We could be requiring conflict resolution teaching in school to teach our children how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. Isn’t that supposed to be part of the Safe Schools initiative so kids can feel safe at school and not bullied, etc?

You could be calling on your States and legislatures to Comply with the NICS system and report convicted criminals, people deemed mentally unstable, report people convicted of drug violations, etc.

If you are the victim of a robbery and your guns are stolen report them to the Police so that Law enforcement will know there out there and you are no longer liable if that gun is used in a crime.

There are many, many things that as Citizens of the United States you could be doing now to help curb gun violence in the U.S..

You don’t need to wait for Congress to act or an Executive Order for something to be done.

This country is found on the Principle that the people are intelligent and capable of determining for themselves how our government should work and what our laws should be. This country works when people are involved and taking responsibility for it. Ask yourself are you doing what you can to prevent gun violence or are you just waiting for the government to do something about it?

Here’s a website (website name) with information on what you can be doing now. It covers proper gun safety, safety rules you can teach your children when they see a gun, how to properly store weapons when they are not in use, etc.

Why is it that ending gun violence is only a Legislative issue and what matters is what they can get passed and turned into law and not about citizens themselves taking a role in our society?

There are millions of legal gun owners and groups that would be more than happy to help make the country safer and help reduce gun violence. Lawful gun owners do not want guns in the hands of criminals and don’t like gun violence anymore than you do. They do not like seeing children killed by guns any more than you do.

Instead of attacking lawful gun ownership, trying to limit all of our rights and making Legal gun owners the scapegoats every time a psychopath with a gun kills a child, why aren’t you asking law abiding gun owners for help?

In AZ, you don't need training or permit to carry concealed. You do need a CC permit if you want to carry in a bar.

The NRA LOVES AZ and makes the state do "stupid pet tricks".

Within weeks of the shooting involving Gabby Giffords, the AZ legislature's only action on guns was to name an "Official State Gun", and now they have a bill that says any new federal gun laws would not be enforced in AZ, and would make it a felony if the feds tried to enforce them..

That's because Az. is smart enough to know restricting guns to law abiding people is not the answer.

@ Herron: "In AZ, you don't need training or permit to carry concealed. You do need a CC permit if you want to carry in a bar." That's incorrect: You do need a permit to carry concealed, and getting that permit requires a class (and a more robust background check). In Arizona, you don't need training or a permit to carry in the *open*. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

@ Airborne_DAD: In Arizona, you can only legally carry concealed in a bar if they haven't posted "No guns" *and* if you don't drink while you're there.

For both concealed and open carry, there are exceptions for schools, the secured area of the airport, etc...

Alright, that's enough facts - let's get back to it now.

that's what you get for suing people. like to know about the work being done but if the guy wanted his money he was suppose to get then give it to him. you can sue him later. sounds like some guy just wasn't going to take any crap off these people and he was serious.

Um, no, you don't get shot for suing someone. That's not expected, normal or acceptable.

Condolences to the family of the victims!

Having said that, we must not forget that there are very cunning corrupt lawyers in the US who use their judicial knowledge, privilege and the judicial system for their wealth and power, while protecting shoddy or sloppy work, unfair and biased judgments and defending corrupt clients who do not do what is right. It is truly amazing what companies are able to get away with these days...even by giving people facial burns (with plenty of evidence) and then try squirm out of their responsibility, or blame the victim. If people and law firms do this long enough they are going to piss of some really bad dangerous guy and attract this kind of "crazies". So next time....do the right thing! Otherwise innocent people get hurt on all sides.

A man dies and you all want to harp on buzzwords like "second amendment" "lawyer" and "psycho." Shameful. Very shameful. Of all the comments here, one expresses sympathies for the family, and that comment immediately dives into "lawyer corruption."

It's clear many of you do not know how to leave your agenda at the door for certain things. This, being one of them.

The bodies keep piling up. Morticians love the 2nd amendment.

Until you can confiscate every gun on the face of the earth, destroy every web page and print book with any reference to guns or how guns work, destroy every mill and machine tool capable of making parts for guns, and kill every human on earth with any knowledge of guns or gunpowder, you will have guns. No law ever written would prevent a criminal or mad man from killing some one if they are determined to do so. So tell me how do we propose to change human nature? If not death by gun, then death by knife, no knife, a sharp stick will work, or even a rock. Ban this, ban that, Ban human nature and make the world happy. When will people understand that you can't legislate morality?
